    Driver jailed six months for absconding with friend’s N184,000

    A Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court, Aso Pada, on Tuesday sentenced a 40- year- old driver, Lawal Dauda, to six months imprisonment for absconding with his friend’s money.

    The Judge, Yusuf Yaqub, sentenced the convict, who lives in Ungwan Hausawa Karmo, FCT, after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating.

    Yaqub, however, gave the convict an option to pay N5,000 fine.

    He ordered that should the convict default, he would get additional one month imprisonment.

    He further ordered the convict to pay N184,000, being the amount owed the complainant.

    Earlier, the police prosecutor, Agabi Auta, had told the court that Sadiq Ginja of Shopping Centre, Mararaba, Nasarawa State, reported the matter at

    the Divisional Police Station, Mararaba, on January 4.

    Auta said that sometime in December 2017, the complainant entrusted Dauda with bags of rice and beans valued at N184,000 to sell for him.

    The prosecutor told the court that the complainant entered into an agreement with the convict that he would sell the grains and remit the money to the complainant.

    “After the accused sold the grains, he did not remit the money to the complainant, rather he absconded to an unknown destination until he was seen and arrested on January 4.

    Agabi said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal.

    Court jails two for stealing yam

    A Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court, Aso Pada in Nasarawa State, on Friday sentenced two labourers to six months imprisonment each for stealing 50 tubers of yam.

    The judge, Upside Yaqub, however, gave the convicts, Habibu Kabiru, 25; and Salisu Hamidu, 22, both residents of Old Orange Market Mararaba, an option of N5, 000 fine each.

    Yaqub warned them to desist from committing crimes and ordered that the tubers of yam be returned to the owner.

    The convicts had pleaded guilty to a four-count charge of criminal conspiracy, trespass, mischief and theft.

    Following the guilty plea, the Prosecutor, Agabi Auta, urged the court to try them summarily under Section 347 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

    Earlier, Auta had told the court that the complainant, Utume Clement of Kudu village, Mararaba, reported the incident at the ‘A’ Division Police Station, Mararaba, on Dec. 22.

    He said that the convicts and one Musa Iliya, now at large, went to the complainant’s farm at Kudu village, Mararaba, and harvested 50 tubers of yam.

    The prosecutor said the convicts were apprehended while trying to put the yam in a sack and were handed over to the police immediately.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 79, 347, 348 and 287 of the Penal Code.

  • My husband denied me sex for 2 years – wife tells court

     

    A 30-year-old house wife, Bilkisu Lawal, on Wednesday told a Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court, that her husband, Shuaibu Yusuf, had denied her sex for two years.

    Bilkisu, who is seeking for divorce, narrated how Yusuf had not been performing his duty as a husband.

    She told the court that she married her husband in January 2012, according to Islamic rites and the marriage blessed with a son.

    She said that sometimes in October 2014 after the birth of their son, she noticed some changes in her husband, who stopped coming to her room.

    “Sometimes in October 2014, about six months after the birth of my son, my husband stopped having sex with me and providing for the family.

    “On several occasions, I have asked what I did wrong, but he will not tell me; in December 2016, he sent me out of the house for no reason.

    “Since then, he never bothered to know where my son and I are staying; neither did he bring money for his son’s upkeep.

    “I have been living with my parent and I cannot continue to live as a married woman when my husband does not see me as a wife,” Bilkisu said.

    She further stated that when she reported to his family, both families sat and talked, and he promised to change, but it has been the same thing.

    The petitioner, however, urged the court to dissolve her 4-year-old marriage as the respondent has failed to live up to expectation as a husband and father.

    In his defence, the respondent said he is still in love with his wife, but has been undergoing some financial problems.

    He said that was why when he sent her away from his house, he specifically told her to go to her parent’s house for some time.

    He prayed the court to give him time to try and settle things with his wife.

    The judge, Owuna Musa, adjourned the matter until April 28 for report of settlement or continuation of hearing.

    Driver docked for stealing girlfriend’s cell phone

    A 25-year-old driver, Sunday Emmanuel, on Monday appeared before a Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court, Aso Pada, Mararaba, Nasarawa State, for allegedly stealing his girlfriend’s cell phone.

    The Prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Adaji, told the court that the accused girlfriend, Daina Evans, of Uke, Mararaba, reported the matter at the ‘A’ Division Police Station, Mararaba, on March 18.

    Adaji said that on March 10, at about 6 p.m., the accused visited his girl friend at home and stole her cell phone valued at N5, 000.

    He said the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    In his words, “I did not steal her cell phone. She came up with the this story because I said I am not going to marry her.

    “She threatened to deal with me and I was arrested for a crime I did not commit,” the accused told the court.

    The presiding Judge, Mr Albert Maga, granted the accused N50, 000 bail with one surety in like sum.

    He said that the surety must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and must present one passport photograph or a National Identity Card and adjourned the case till April 4 for further hearing.
