He was also part of the squad that won three Champions League titles in a row between the 2015-16 and 2017-18 seasons.

“He is one of our greatest legends and Real Madrid is and always will be his home.”

Marcelo last played for Brazilian Serie A side Fluminense, where he started his youth and professional career, winning the Copa Libertadores in 2023 before leaving by mutual consent in November.

  • Injuries to Nacho, Casemiro add to Real Madrid’s woes

As Real Madrid’s injury crisis deepens, defender Nacho Fernandez will miss two months and midfielder Casemiro around three weeks, reports in Spain indicated on Monday.

Both players were substituted after sustaining injuries during Real Madrid’s 4-2 La Liga win at Celta Vigo on Sunday.

Real Madrid said in a statement on Monday that Nacho had suffered a dislocation in his right knee and Casemiro had sprained his ankle.

The European champions are already missing defenders Marcelo, Raphael Varane and Dani Carvajal through injury, as well as striker Mariano Diaz.

  • Marcelo to pay €753,000 in tax fraud settlement

Real Madrid defender Marcelo is to part with €753,624 to settle a tax fraud case after an agreement was reached with the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office in Madrid.

Last October, the Real Madrid full-back was accused of evading payment to the Spanish treasury in relation to his image rights.

However, Spanish news agency EFE reported on Tuesday that a settlement has been reached and Marcelo has gone to court in Madrid to ratify the agreement.

Marcelo is the latest in a line of high-profile figures in Spanish football to be punished in relation to tax affairs,

others who have had to keep a date with the tax man in Spain include five time Balloon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo who recently moved to Italian side Juventus, Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi and current Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho.

In the case of Ronaldo, the portugal international had to reach an agreement with Spanish tax authorities to serve two years in prison and pay an 18.8m euro ($21.8m) fine in a tax evasion case.

The 33-year-old, winner of the Best Footballer of the Year in 2017,was however spared the prison palaver  because Spanish law states that a sentence of under two years for a first offence can be served on probation.

Prosecutors had accused Ronaldo of declaring only 11.5m euro ($13.6m) of Spanish-related income from 2011 to 2014, during which time his actual earnings were close to 43m euro ($50.8m).

They also accuse him of “voluntarily” refusing to include 28.4m euro ($33.6m) in income linked to the sale of his image rights for the 2015 to 2020 period to a Spanish company.

Madrid left back Marcelo in £437,000 tax charge

Spanish prosecutors have accused Real Madrid left back Marcelo of defrauding local tax authorities of nearly half a million euros.

Prosecutors say the Brazil international defrauded authorities of €490,917.70 (£437,539.59) in 2013.

They say the irregularities are related to Marcelo’s use of companies abroad to handle earnings from image rights.

Marcelo, who has been playing  for Real Madrid since moving from Brazilian club Fluminense in 2007, is the latest player to be targeted by tax authorities in Spain.

Last year, Lionel Messi and his father were found guilty on three counts of defrauding tax authorities of €4.1m (£3.65m) from income made from image rights.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Carvalho, Angel di Maria, Javier Mascherano, Radamel Falcao and Fabio Coentrao are among other players investigated by Spanish authorities.

Earlier this month, Carvalho was sentenced to seven months in prison for tax fraud committed while playing for Real Madrid.

However the former Chelsea player, who has won 89 caps for Portugal, is unlikely to spend any time behind bars.

Under Spanish law, jail terms under two years for first time offences are viewed as suspended sentences.

Carvalho is the latest big-name La Liga player to be found guilty of tax fraud, with the highest profile case being that of Messi and his father, Jorge.

The pair were found guilty in July 2016 of hiding earnings from image rights in offshore accounts in Uruguay and Belize from 2007 to 2009.

The Barcelona star was given 21 months in jail and a €250,000 (£210,000) fine, but like Carvalho will not serve time in prison.

  • Marcelo fined 6 000 euros for illegal driving

Real Madrid fullback Marcelo has been fined €6 000 for driving without a valid licence, court authorities in the Spanish capital said.

The Brazilian was pulled over on the afternoon of February 12 on the M-12 highway and it was discovered he had previously been stripped of all his points, rendering his licence invalid, the authorities said.

Marcelo is the latest Real player to fall foul of Spain’s traffic laws after their France striker Karim Benzema was clocked driving at 216 kph in the early hours of February 3, more than twice the speed limit of 100 kph.

The 25-year-old faces losing his licence as well as a possible fine, a period of community service or even a short prison sentence, according to Spanish law.

The two incidents, as well as recent transgressions by other high-profile players including former Germany captain Michael Ballack, have drawn criticism from a Spanish association which supports victims of traffic accidents.

The “STOP accidentes” group criticised Real captain Iker Casillas for driving with a cast on his injured hand and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique for carrying his infant son in the front seat without the proper safety equipment.
