  • Late Alonso header gives Chelsea win in Prague

Chelsea struck late with a header by defender Marcos Alonso to beat a stubborn Slavia Prague side 1-0 in their Europa League quarter-final, first leg on Thursday.

Spaniard Alonso broke the deadlock for the west London side in the 86th minute when he sneaked behind two defenders to connect with Willian’s cross.

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri made seven changes to his lineup from the team that beat West Ham United 2-0 in the Premier League on Monday.

Belgian talisman Eden Hazard had to come off the bench for the last half an hour.

Alonso’s goal gave the Blues a vital away goal as they put behind them bitter memories of the stadium where they lost the 2013 Super Cup to Bayern Munich in a penalty shootout. (Reuters/NAN)

  • Alonso declares Spurs clash a must win

Marcos Alonso has warned that Chelsea risk falling out of the top finish if they fail to beat London rivals Tottenham at the Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Last season’s champions are fifth in the league table with 56 points, five points behind Spurs as both teams bid to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

The spain international admitted that the tie will not be a tea party but added that the homers must go the extra mile to ensure that they pull a victory in Sunday’s clash.

‘It’s not over until it is mathematically impossible, but it would be very difficult for sure if we lost,’ Alonso told the media.

‘It is definitely a must-win game. Here at Chelsea, we have to fight until the end for every target we can achieve, and next year we have to be in the Champions League. On Sunday, we have to get a win,’he insisted

Tottenham have not beaten Chelsea away since 1990, when former England striker Gary Lineker scored the winning goal in a 2-1 league victory.

However, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are unbeaten in the Premier League in 2018, with seven victories and three draws, and go into the mouthwatering clash high on confidence.

‘I don’t think the past will have an influence. I don’t like stats, I think it will be a different game and we will have to give everything and be fully focused to get the three points,’ Alonso added.

‘It’s a massive game. We have a very important target, which is arriving at the end of the season in the top four.

Tottenham could be without their injured top scorer Harry Kane but Alonso said Chelsea’s defenders cannot afford to let their guard down.

‘Kane is a very important player for them, that’s for sure. But I think they are a very good side physically, with some quality players, and I think it will be a very tough game even without him.’

Kane is stepping up his recovery from an ankle injury he picked up in this month’s 4-1 win at Bournemouth and will be assessed before the match.

  • Better late than never for Alonso after Spain call-up

Marcos Alonso is keen to prove himself at international level after the Chelsea defender earned his first senior Spain call-up for the upcoming friendlies against Germany and Argentina.

The left-back has featured in 40 of the London side’s 49 total fixtures this season, with his solid form rewarded by a place in Coach Julen Lopetegui’s 24-man squad.

The last international appearance for the 27-year-old Alonso, who joined Chelsea in 2016, was for the Spanish under-19 team in 2009.

“Whether it’s late or not, the important thing is that I’m here,” Alonso said.

“My focus was on doing well at Chelsea and this was a welcome surprise. This is a reward for the work I’ve done in recent years… I’m thrilled and looking forward to this experience.

“It’s a chance to prove myself and for me to adapt quickly to the side, and hopefully, to return to the national team more times.”

Should Alonso earn his first cap, he would follow in the footsteps of both his grandfather and father in representing Spain at senior level.

Spain will travel to face World Cup holders Germany in Duesseldorf on Friday before hosting Argentina at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid on Tuesday.

“They’re two very important matches to prepare for what’s to come. They’re nice games, against the world champions and the runners-up, special for any player,” Alonso added.

  • Chelsea beat reigning champions Leicester to go 7 points clear

Marcos Alonso scored twice as Chelsea beat Leicester on Saturday to move seven points clear at the top of the English Premier League in spite of Diego Costa’s absence.

The Blues were without their top scorer after a training ground dispute over his fitness, amid reports he has been offered a lucrative move to China.

That saga did not affect them at the King Power Stadium however, with Eden Hazard setting up Alonso to fire home after only six minutes.

The Spanish wing-back added his second early in the second half when his shot from the edge of the area was deflected in.

Pedro made sure of the points with a deft header from Willian’s cross.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Leicester, lining up in a new-look 3-5-2 formation, struggled to find a way back into the game.

Ahmed Musa had tested Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois before his side fell behind, but the defending champions did not manage another shot on target.

Before kick-off, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte had played down any row involving Costa, claiming he was not in his squad because of a back injury.

Whatever the truth behind Costa’s absence, the Blues showed again that they can win without the Spain striker, who has scored 14 goals and provided five assists for them this season.

Chelsea initially had to work harder for the points than they did when Costa was suspended in their 3-0 victory over Bournemouth on Dec. 26.

NAN reports that it was the only other league game he has missed in 2016/2017.

Again they used Hazard to lead the line rather than turn to £33 million summer signing Michy Batshuayi, who was left on the bench and still awaits his first league start.

Alonso, rather than Hazard, will get the headlines on this occasion, but Chelsea’s dominant performance was further evidence it will be hard to dislodge them from top spot.

This was Chelsea’s 12th clean sheet in 21 games and, even without Costa’s belligerent presence upfront, they remain difficult to break down and dangerous when they come forward.

Conte’s side had seen their 13-game winning streak ended by Tottenham in their previous Premier League game, but that remains their only defeat since the end of September.

Spurs’ emphatic win over West Brom earlier on Saturday had reduced the Blues’ lead to four points, but if Chelsea are feeling any pressure in the title race they did not show it here.

Their form is becoming ominous for the chasing pack, and Liverpool — their nearest rivals before the weekend — can ill afford to lose any more ground.

They face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Foxes manager Claudio Ranieri, named FIFA’s coach of the year this week, attempted to match Chelsea’s formation by playing with wing-backs of his own.

But his experiment did not pay off as Albrighton and Ben Chilwell failed to make the same impact as their opposite numbers, Alonso and Victor Moses.

To compound their woes, the Foxes also struggled to create chances.

England striker Jamie Vardy was back from suspension to lead their attack, but he made little impression apart from playing one dangerous cross and did not manage a single shot.

Leicester are still six points above the relegation zone in spite of this defeat.

But, with Riyad Mahrez, Islam Slimani and Daniel Amarty away at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ranieri must find a better blend with the players still at his disposal.

Chelsea host struggling Hull on Jan. 22, while Leicester travel to Southampton on the same day, hoping for their first away win of a disappointing domestic season.
