  • EFCC urged to probe alleged N20b fraud in academy

    A socio-cultural organisation, Oro Youth Movement (OYOM), has decried the slow pace of development at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) Oron, Akwa Ibom State.

    It attributed the problem to fraud and financial recklessness by successive managers of the institution since the inception of the school.

    The President of OYOM, Comrade Victor Mkpofor, who spoke with reporters in Uyo,  alleged that over N20 billion was mismanaged by governing boards of the premier maritime institution.

    He called on the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to investigate the financial activities of the past administrators of the institution.

    Said he: “The management of MAN cannot account for over N20 billion.

    ‘’The institution has overtime been used as a conduit pipe by highly placed persons in the Federal Ministry of Transport, the supervising ministry.”

    Mkpofor said revenue accruing to the institution from NIMASA finds its way to private pockets.

  • Six-man committee to restructure Maritime Academy, Oron

    The Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, on Wednesday inaugurated six-man Interim Management Committee to restructure Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron.

    Amaechi, while inaugurating the committee in Abuja, said that the Federal Government had approved the implementation of the reports earlier submitted by the committee.

    He said that the committee was earlier inaugurated in January to advise the government on the best way to restructure and reposition the academy, adding that the report had been submitted.

    “It is my pleasure to once again welcome you to yet another inauguration on the same matter, the restructuring of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron.

    “As I said during your inauguration as a committee to advise government on how best to restructure and reposition the academy to make it comparable to successful academies worldwide.

    “To achieve the vision and objectives of establishing the institution, members of the committee now transformed into an Interim Management Committee.

    “We approach the Federal Government since May to give us the go ahead to implement your reports and we got the approval of the President for the committee to implement that report, “ he said.

    Amaechi urged the newly appointed Rector of the Academy, Cdr. Duja Effedua to work with the committee, saying he could also act in that capacity after the assignment of the committee was over.

    “The Federal Government had appointed the Rector with the idea to work with the committee and he can only act as a Rector after the committee is done with their assignment,’’ he said.

    He said that the ministry would provide the necessary resources to enable the committee function properly.

    Responding, the Chairman of the Committee, Mr Adebayo Sarumi said that the committee was willing to carry out the approved recommendations given to them.

    He said that the committee would complete its task within the duration of six months as instructed.

    Responding, Effedua, the Rector of MAN said he would assess the situation and challenges of the academy to enable him know what next to do.

    “I am new in that office, I have to go there to assess the situation, nobody can rise above the interim, I must go there to appraise the situation,’’ he said.

  • FG promotes 378 staff in Maritime Academy

    FG promotes 378 staff in Maritime Academy

    The Federal Government has approved the promotion of 378 Staff of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Akwa Ibom State.

    The promotion was contained in a statement Wednesday signed by the head, Corporate Affairs of MAN, Mr. Siddi Mkpandiok.

    He explained that the promotion was the result of the Junior, Senior and Management Staff interviews which took place in the main campus of the Academy late last year.

    According to Mkpandiok, out of the total number of staff promoted, 157 are junior staff, while the senior and management staff drawn from both the Academic and Administration arms is 221.

    Among them are three Chief Lecturers: Maurice Ijeoma, Innocent Ezeala, Dr. John Adeyanju; four Directors: Siddi Mkpandiok, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Emmanuel Essien, Personnel Affairs, Mr. Sunday Udoh, Finance and Account; Mr. Okon Okon, Finance and Account.

    Four others got promoted to the rank of Assistant Chief Lecturer and they include; Mrs. Atim Ikara, Mr. Ekwere William, Mr. Olaoluwa Omotosho, Mrs. Angela Udofe and an Assistant Chief Librarian, Mr. Effiong Okon.

    Two Staff each were also promoted to the rank of Deputy Registrar and Deputy Director.  They are: Mr. Peter Netson and Mr. Ishiola Yusuf, and Mrs. Theresa Anya and Babawale Ogunsola respectively.

    He said: “When the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi directed the Permanent Secretary in charge of the Ministry, Alhaji Sabiu Zakari and four Directors in the Ministry to personally supervise the interview which held in December last year was comprehensible apprehension on the part of staff, being the first time, in the life of the Academy, that the Ministry was directly physically supervising promotion interview in the institution.

    “Today, the staff are happier for reasons of greater authenticity, work satisfaction and rewarding motivation,  and remain grateful to the Honourable Minister, the Permanent Secretary, and all the Directors and Staffers of the Ministry who worked tirelessly to ensure this success of the exercise.”
