Stay away from Rivers political crisis, Mark Angel cautions youths

Popular skit maker Mark Angel has cautioned youths and residents of Rivers State to avoid getting entangled in the ongoing political crisis in the state.

This advice comes on the heels of President Bola Tinubu’s decision to suspend Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the House of Assembly for six months.

In a video posted on his Instagram handle, Mark Angel emphasised that the conflict is a dispute between two governments, rooted in failed agreements and personal disagreements, and does not concern the youths.

He warned young people against taking sides or getting involved in the situation.

Reflecting on the situation, the 33-year-old Rivers-born content creator reminded the public that he and his team had predicted such a crisis in their skits two years ago, but their warnings were ignored.

Mark Angel urged youths to focus on their businesses, health, and personal development, rather than getting caught up in political conflicts.

He stated: “My fellow Rivers state people and all residents especially the youths, it is not your matter, it does not concern you. It is government versus government. The government said they had an agreement with the other government.

“Now the agreement did not hold even though they have their personal issues. But what I want to let you know is that this is not your concern. We said a lot of jokes and made skits about this issue about two years ago, we were warning that this was going to happen, now it has happened.

“The government ignored those videos, tagging them as jokes and skits but now it is being manifested. So leave them to fight their fight, if they announce military rule for 10 years, no problem.

“As long as we can come out, do our businesses, eat and progress in the society.
“Do not fight over someone else’s issues. The governor who is asking us to protest, how did he enter power? All of us know now, so they know themselves, let them settle their issues, do not get involved.”

I was drowning in debts, and one by one, I watched all my properties slip into the hands of loan sharks. It felt like my world was crumbling, and in my darkest moments, I considered ending it all.

“But God… If not for His mercies, I wouldn’t be here writing this. He sent angels into my life when I needed them the most. Blessing, my friend who became family, never gave up on me. My pastor and his wife stood by me, praying and guiding me. My daughters, Victoria and Mila, reminded me of the beauty of life, even when it felt unbearable. My ex-wife Mandy extended a hand of kindness I will never forget. My son, Schoolboy, showed me strength beyond his years. And Bright, my social media assistant, stood as a pillar in moments I thought I’d collapse.

A scandal hit, shaking the foundation of my career and questioning the loyalty of those around me. It was in that storm that God began to uncover the truth. He exposed the fake friends, the pretenders, and the ones who had been silently sabotaging my peace and my circle. It was painful, but it was necessary.

“2024 was the hardest year of my life, but it was also the year God drew me closer to Him. Through the ashes, He taught me resilience, faith, and the true meaning of grace. I don’t take it for granted that I’m alive today. To everyone who stood with me, prayed for me, and held me up when I had no strength left, thank you.

“Here’s to God’s unwavering faithfulness. If 2024 taught me anything, it’s that even in the darkest valleys, His light never stops shining.”

Friend who mocked me in early days works for me – Comedian Mark Angel

Prominent skit maker and content creator, Mark Angel has recalled how he almost abandoned comedy due to challenges and discouraging comments from friends.

In a recent interview with Teju Babyface, Mark Angel recalled how a friend working with Shell Nigeria mocked him during his days as a struggling skit maker, questioning if it was skits he wanted to use to feed his family.

He stated that he started making skits in 2013 but gained the spotlight in 2015.

Mark said: “I started skit-making in 2013 but hit the spotlight in 2015. In 2015, people started to know about me. I think my breakthrough was in 2016. That was when I decided to do comedy full-time.

“I was doing photography and videography part-time before then. So, I just decided to let that go. It took three years before I blew up in the skit-making business. There were so many times when I was discouraged. But the vision and belief I had were stronger than the discouragement.

“At a point, I started doubting myself because of what people were telling me. I had a friend called Alloy who nearly discouraged me from this life of skit-making.

“One day, I was coming back home from the location with my laptop and camera, and Alloy who was working with Shell Nigeria then stopped me to say, ‘Mark, you intend to provide for your family with skits? Really? This ‘foolishness’ is your plan to take care of family? Just wandering and trekking aimlessly with laptop? At least, pay for a ride on a commercial motorcycle!’

“As at that time, I was investing every money I was making into my craft. Because at that time the only way you could get ahead was to pay bloggers. I even put one of the bloggers on monthly payment. I paid the blogger N30,000 every month to promote my skits.

“Alloy who was discouraging me back then now works in my construction company. He works for me now. So every time, I teased him about how he was mocking me during my days as a struggling skit maker.”
