Zuckerberg finally bags honourary Harvard degree 12 years after quitting

Facebook co-founder, Mark Zuckerberg, one of Havard’s most famous dropouts has finally returned to pick up his degree twelve years after leaving Harvard to work on Facebook full-time.

Zuckerberg founded ‘Facebook’ in his college dormitory in the year 2004 and dropped out in November 2005. “I’m not coming back” he told the university paper, The Crimson.

His honorary degree comes 12 years later, a little quicker than it took Bill Gates, another famous Harvard dropout to get his.

Gates, who left to found Microsoft in 1975, did not receive his honorary degree until 2007. However, Facebook CEO who dropped out to focus on the social networking site, picked up an honorary doctorate degree Thursday.

After receiving the degree, he posted a picture of himself with his parents Edward and Karen Zuckerberg and updated his degree status on Facebook ‘mom I always told you I’d come back and get my degree’

Facebook blocks pages with royal insults on Thai junta’s request

Facebook has blocked access in Thailand to 178 pages with “inappropriate” content, including some containing alleged insults against the royal family, upon the military government’s request, officials said on Thursday.

Media Regulator National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) told newsmen that among 309 Facebook pages ordered shut down by a Thai criminal court, 178 of them have been blocked for local users of late.

Recently, Thailand’s internet providers sent a request to Facebook head Mark Zuckerberg and the company’s managing director in Thailand to block pages and posts deemed in violation of Thai law.

The NBTC has threatened to take legal actions against Facebook in Thailand if the remaining 131 pages are not blocked by coming week.

Thailand’s majesty law prohibits criticism of the royal family, with perpetrators facing up to 15 years in prison if found guilty.

Facebook did not confirm the number of pages and posts blocked on the Thai government’s request, but said it is making certain content unavailable in the relevant country once it determines that the content violates local laws.

According to the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, Thailand’s criminal court has ordered the shutdown of nearly 7,000 “inappropriate” web pages since 2015.

However, around 600 pages remain, with over half on Facebook that the ministry cannot block because they are encrypted.

The junta has launched a crackdown on suspects since it came to power in a May 2014 coup.

According to the International Federation for Human Rights, since then, the number has grown to 105.

Most of the people detained were found to make comments or share posts deemed to insult or defame the monarchy on Facebook.

  • When Zuckerberg came visiting

    When Zuckerberg came visiting

Ibrahim Apekhade Yusuf recounts fond memories of Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg’s visit to Lagos

The two-day whistle stop visit last week by Facebook’s Chief Executive Officer, Mark Zuckerberg, to Lagos and Abuja, in one of his first visits to sub Sahara Africa, is instructive. He made quite an impression and may have left indelible marks on the minds of the people he met during the brief encounters.

Although a world renowned celebrity, he came into the country without the usual razzmatazz and fanfare you would expect from a man of means. His visit was shorn of all the media blitz as well.

When The Nation visited the headquarters of Co-Creation Hub, Yaba, Lagos, the local innovation centre, where the Facebook’s chief made his surprise visit, there were no visible traces to show that they had welcomed a VIP during the week.

But of course, for those who had personally met and received the August guest, the memories lingered still.

Speaking with Adebayo Adegbembo, one of the software developers who met the tech guru, you could tell he was still savouring every moment of their encounter.

“One would have expected that as a ‘big man’ by every standard, he would have announced his visit with some kind of hullabaloo but he came in unannounced to the surprise of everybody. Nobody around was expecting such a calibre of a person in our midst,” he recalled.

“Here was a man who did not come with gun-toting policemen and all the bodyguards of this world. He put on no airs whatsoever.”

Adegbembo who is the founder of Genii Games, a platform to make it easier for kids to learn about African culture both in Nigeria and the Diaspora, said Zuckerberg came in donning just a jean and a T-shirt you would see on any regular guy. Such, he said, was totally surprising.

“I guess the long and short of everything about him was his simplicity. There was no cosmetic about it, or anything fake.  The interesting thing again for me is that having met that kind of August visitor, at first it doesn’t hit you but later you sit back and say to yourself, come, did I really meet someone as great as Mark Zuckerberg? C’mon that guy is richer than many nations of the world put together!

“When I shared it on Facebook for example, the number of shares and likes it attracted was just so much. You had a lot of people commenting and all that… And having him come to this place, straight from the airport and down here, says a lot about the ideals he stands for. I think the takeaway for me is that you can keep doing your own thing and not know anybody and someone who understands what it takes would come all the way to add value to that thing you’re doing and trace you to wherever you’re even if it’s in one thick forest…For me, young people recognised him as a hero. I don’t know who would have driven that kind of movement. I don’t know if it’s a Buhari or anyone else here…”

For Bayo, the one thing he is very proud of is getting the imprimatur of support from the Facebook originator himself.

Echoing similar sentiments, Tunji Eleso, one of the Directors at CCHub, who also met with Zuckerberg, said he was the catalyst the centre had been waiting to turn things around for good.

“Most importantly, Mark’s visit for us is a big stamp of approval on the technology ecosystem as a whole, especially for people who have been here for the last five years, people sweating and toiling trying to create the future they want to see. So this visit is so pleasant to us particularly because it’s the first place he visited on his first visit to the continent. That shows there’s a lot more that can come out of here.”

Besides CCHub, the Facebook founder also visited another company, Andela in Lagos, just a stone throw from CCHub. Andela, a company that recruits the most talented technologists in Africa and embeds them into engineering organisations worldwide, had received $24milion in Series B funding in June led by Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI).

When The Nation visited Andela, the unofficial account by some of the staff was that an uncommon visitor had come.

“We were not expecting anybody of his calibre. But what were told that a staff of his company was coming. Of course, when it was confirmed that he was around the staff were asked to stay wherever they were. Only the top level staff were allowed to receive him. We were also told not to take selfies too,” one of the staff who asked not to be named confided in The Nation.

However in  response to an enquiry, Mohini Ufeli in an email said Zuckerberg met with Seni Sulyman, Director of Operations, and Nadayar Enegesi, Director of Learning & Development, to discuss the learning science powering Andela and the company’s success placing world-class African software developers with technology companies around the world.

He was also said to have sat down with Andela developers Innocent Amadi, who runs the Facebook Lagos Developer Group, and Blessing Ebowe to learn about the highlights and challenges of being a software developer in Lagos.

“We were excited and honoured to welcome Zuckerberg to Lagos,” said Sulyman, Director of Andela Lagos. “His visit reinforces not only his support of Andela’s mission, but his belief that indeed the next generation of great technology leaders will come out of Lagos, Nigeria and cities across Africa.”

At the Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, Zuckerberg had an interface and discussion session with Nigerian software developers and tech entrepreneurs.

Of course, he capped his visit by going to Aso Rock, where he met with President Muhammdau Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The president, who could not hide his excitement, said he was impressed by the Facebook founder’s humanness. “I am impressed by your simplicity in sharing your knowledge and wealth with those with less income,” he said. According to him, the simplicity and magnanimity of the entrepreneur, who is among the world’s richest men, has also challenged the culture of lavish wealth display and impulsive spending that has become peculiar to Nigerians.

“We are not used to seeing successful people appear like you; we are not used to seeing successful people jogging and sweating on the streets. “We are more used to seeing successful people in air-conditioned places; we are happy you are well-off and simple enough to always share.”

The import f the visit would continue to ricochet in the Nigerian tech world for a long while.

  • NIGERIA IN THE NEWS FOR MARK ZUCKERBERG

NIGERIA just got the world’s attention again with the visit of the Facebook man, Mark Zuckerberg who was more than delighted to meet some filmmakers, having been attracted to the industry called Nollywood.

The mere reason that Zuckerberg finds more attraction in our film industry than our music sector says a lot about the special place that filmmaking holds in the entertainment space.

It’s a mix grill for our dear country, as we are so in the news all the time whether for the good or bad reports. But, sure, this is a good one. And I must say another promotional stuff for Lagos State, with the picture of the guy jogging among many along the much celebrated Ikoyi Bridge.

Few hours later, the world’s sixth richest man was meeting with Nollywood, having said earlier at a Town Hall meeting with entrepreneurs: “One of the things I’m looking forward to on this trip is checking out Nollywood. I think it is, and I hope it’s not disproved, a kind of national treasure.”

I guess that the fact that Nigeria has the largest Facebook population in the whole of Africa is quite endearing, going by the level of social and political engagements that take place on that space.

Anyone would also be amazed our political woes play out in such a subtle manner on Facebook in form of still and motion picture visuals. These are no less talents that call for some more opportunities. Thus, he said, while talking on investing in Andela and Bridge Academies; “We want to try and make opportunity as equal distributed around the world as talent is.”

Indeed, it takes a man who believes in a people to want to ‘invest’ in their future, hence, he said, “I’m here (in Nigeria) because this is where I think a lot of the future is gonna get built.”

Leading his conversation with Nollywood was the rave-of-the-moment filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, whose international exposure has just received further boost, after his recently attained record as the first in Nigeria to partner an international airline such as Air France in a pan African movie and arguably the first to have an in-flight premiere of his movie on an international flight.

A typical business savvy Afolayan was captured in a video released after the encounter, asking about the Facebook application that can complement movie distribution in Nigeria.

“The question I’m willing to ask,” says Afolayan, “is that is there a possibility at some point for Facebook to do something whereby you post a content and you monetise it?”

According to the filmmaker, “ before now, I used to post and promote, but I’m looking at more opportunities because distribution is a major problem in this country; DVDs are no go area, and we have always tried to come up with an App that is safe and not easy to copy, but it’s a major challenge. So, if there is an opportunity where there is an App on Facebook where you put content like YouTube is doing and the amount of followings or views you get is monetized; that will make you our superman.”

It is also remarkable that the Facebook man chose Afrinolly for this rendezvous. Where else could have been appropriate for such meeting if not this outfit run by a change agent called Chike Maduegbuna and his wife, Jane.

“It was a surreal moment for us at Afrinolly, when Mark Zuckerberg paid us a surprise visit. This is one of those moments when you’re not sure if it’s just his gracing us with his presence, or the fact that he found what we do here “interesting – You tell me,” said Maduegbuna.

Continuing, he said: “All we know here at Afrinolly is, that his surprise visit has done all lot to boost and affirm our belief in what we stand for.”

The couple who became popular for their Afrinolly film App and short film competition had received an exceptional Google rating and prizing. They have also partnered Ford Foundation on talent development. Not only is their studio listed among the Bank of Industry (BoI)’s preferred, their facility pass for an official Secretariat and foreign business contact for Nollywood.

It was an eventful visit for Zuckerberg who also attended the much anticipated birthday party of the most popular Nigerian on Snapchat, Bobrisky, at Escape nightclub, Victoria Island, Lagos.

It is heartwarming that Lagos, and indeed Nigeria is in the global news for this great man and other opportunities his visit has offered in the marketing of the Nigeria brand.

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg has advised women not to date nerds if they want to be successful – but to be nerd s.

This advice was given by a grandmother posted on Facebook telling her granddaughters to “date the nerd in school” because he may turn into the next billionaire.

In a response to a New Year post from the tech tycoon, Darlene Hackemer Loretto commented: “I keep telling my granddaughters to Date the nerd in school, he may turn out to be a Mark Zuckerberg!”

Similarly, Zuckerberg said: “Even better would be to encourage them to be the nerd in their school so they can be the next successful inventor,” he advised.

A nerd is a term that indicates that a person is overly intellectual, obsessive, or lacking social skills.
