  • INEC faces huge challenge in 2019, says Martins

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is facing a huge challenge ahead of 2019 than it did in 2015, Grand Patron of Legacy International Group Chief Kenny Martins has said.

He argued that INEC, as presently constituted, must surpass what it achieved under former President Goodluck Jonathan administration.

Martins spoke in an interview with The Nation during a meeting with a delegation of Legacy International Group, United Kingdom (UK), in Lagos.

He noted that Jonathan set in motion a process of election that had become the envy of many nations,  hence the President Muhammadu Buhari  owe the nation a duty to surpass that.

“We have seen how elections can be held perfectly, and so we do not want anything below the standard of 2015. It was Jonathan’s process that brought the current administration to power, and that means the present INEC cannot afford to perform poorly,” he said.

On the task before the commission, Martins said Nigerians in the Diaspora must be able to vote during the country’s elections.

He agreed that this might be too late to achieve in 2019, but that moving forward, it must be accomplished in 2023 general elections.

The businessman added that as part of the efforts to realise this, Legacy International is already mobilising a million signatures for the purpose.

Martins said with elections campaign underway, his group is looking forward to a campaign, where love would prevail and hate speech and mudslinging would not be the order of the day.

He noted that based on the substance of political parties’ campaigns and especially prayers, Legacy International would endorse a candidate to support.

Such candidate, he explained, will be one, whose planned programmes are supported by most Nigerians.

To be properly guided, Martin said the group is organising a national prayer for the success of the election and for peace to reign supreme in the country. The prayer, he said, will hold on December 14, at the Eagle Square in Abuja. The event is expected to have in attendance political leaders and the citizens.

The group’s coordinator in the UK,  Olawale Oguntoye, a retired Army officer, said Legacy was formed because of happenings in the country. He said those abroad are yearning to return to Nigeria to help move the country forward.

He added that the UK branch has requested and applied for approval for the establishment and running of Legacy Newspaper and Legacy Television in the kingdom.

“This two important media will come on stream immediately the government of United Kingdom graciously gives the green light,” Oguntoye said.

Besides, he said UK government and the United States (U.S.) have shown indication that the electoral commission would be supported for a successful election.

Besides, the coordinator said the body would register with INEC, ECOWAS and other bodies to actively monitor the elections.

AVM Martins, driver die as SUV plunges into lagoon

Retired Air Force officer, Air Vice-Marshal (AVM) Olufunsho Martins, and his driver, have died after their Ford Explorer Sports Utility Vehicle ( SUV ) plunged into the Lagoon on Saturday night.

    Their bodies were yesterday recovered.

The incident occurred about  10:55pm near the University of Lagos (UNILAG) waterfront on the Third Mainland Bridge.

The businessman and his driver were said to be heading for Lagos Island, when their vehicle collided with another on the bridge.

The SUV, it was gathered, sommersaulted several times before it  skidded  into the lagoon.

It was learnt that officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and fishermen recovered the bodies from the submerged vehicle at about 2:30am.

According to a source, they both had their seat belts on and  no injuries.

The source said: “All the car air bags  came out. It was a serious accident. The bonnet pulled out and the roof was flattened, which indicated that the vehicle might have tumbled at least three times before nosediving.

“The vehicle was over 75 percent submerged into the muddy part of the lagoon. When we brought it out, we had to first raise the flattened vehicle to avoid inflicting injuries on the bodies.

“The LASEMA General Manager has been in touch with his family and officers from the Nigerian Air Force.”

It was gathered that some personnel from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and AVM Martins’ family took his bodies away.

A prominent Lagosian, AVM Martins retired from the NAF in 2003 and had  been  in the real estate and hospitality sectors.

He developed the Golden Park Estate in Sangotedo, a hotel/events centre at Ikeja, and other businesses.

LASEMA General Manager Adesina Tiamiyu confirmed the incident.

He said: “This is a sad incident. I can only tell you that we recovered two bodies. I cannot say who they are because it won’t be fair to the families to learn about the demise of their loved ones from the media.”

It was learnt that the retired AVM returned to the country last Tuesday from the United Kingdom (UK) to attend a funeral.

His cousin took to social media to mourn his death. He praying to God to comfort his family.

He wrote: “So tragic, so sad. We lost my cousin, AVM Olufunsho Martins late yesterday through a Third Mainland Bridge accident.  May the good Lord grant repose to the soul of the departed and give succour to the bereaved. He giveth and He taketh. But Lord, why do the good ones leave so early?”

  • Martins to Nigerians: Don’t give in to despair

Lagos Catholic Archbishop Adewale Martins has advised Nigerians not to despair, despite the harsh economic realities.

He told them to persevere and keep their hope in God for a better future.

Martins spoke with newsmen after the prism mass in Festac Lagos last week.

He condemned the resort to suicides by Nigerians, saying it was a bad way to respond to the economic downturns.

According to him: “We can’t see a government that is so sure with a policy that can bring us out of economic recession.

“It looks like trial and error. So we are hoping that the new policy that the government is working on will take the country out of recession as expected.

“And before the economic policy takes root, there should be palliative measures to ensure that people don’t die.”

Martins expressed displeasure with the recent discoveries of cash in private residences and ware houses.

Such stashed funds, he said, were ill-gotten and products of corruption.

He advised priests to be faithful irrespective of their strong points and short falls, pointing out that parishioners should also support them to succeed.

The Archbishop expressed satisfaction with the growth of the archdiocese under his watch, attributing it to God’s grace.

He pledged more commitment to evangelisation to increase the estimated three million-strong Catholic in Lagos.

Chinese Super League Martins battle Ighalo

Former Inter Milan wonderkid Obafemi Martins is poised to make his first appearance of the new season for Shanghai Shenhua in their Chinese Super League tie at Changchun Yatai.

Martins was not in the squad for the first four rounds but it is all but confirmed he’ll be in action on Saturday at the Development Area Stadium, with another marque signing Carlos Tevez unavailable due to injury.

The Nigeria international was in the traveling party to the Jilin Province while the Argentinian stayed back in Shanghai to treat his leg muscle discomfort.

Martins, who is Nigeria’s second best paid player, will face off with ex-Watford striker Odion Ighalo if he is handed playing time.

The veteran striker caught the eye in pre-season and the highlight of his performance was netting a hat-trick in Shanghai Shenhua’s 5-0 rout of YSCC Yokohama.

  • How to make change work, by Martins

Strict enforcement of laws will bring about the much-needed change, the Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Lagos, Most Rev. Adewale Martins has stated.

This, he said, is what will make the change mantra of the current administration more than a jingle.

Much as he applauded the Change begins with you campaign recently launched by President Muhammadu Buhari, Martins said it should be complemented with law enforcement for Nigerians to truly change.

He last week at the ordination of three Priests at the St. Anne Cathedral Maryland, Lagos.

According to Martins, government must fight impunity throughout the country for the change message to sink in with Nigerians.

He said: “If the government is able to arrest impunity, I think change will begin to have stronger basis than just the jingle we hear on radio.”

The cleric called on the federal government to also reflate the economy by injecting recovered loots.

This, he stated, will help to stimulate the economy out of recession.

He also called on states to look inward for Internally Generated Revenues instead of running to Abuja every month for handouts.

Martins stated: “We hope some of the funds that have been recovered will be put to use to alleviate the state that the people are going through at this time.

“If put into the economy, it will help to stimulate it back again and out of recession, so that things can begin to happen again.”

He expressed delight with the ordination of the three priests, saying their coming to ministry will endanger change within the church.

The ordained, according to him, were coming with years of experiences in ministry work, a development he said will help the church in no small way.

“When new water flows into a tree, it helps to make the tree more wholesome. We expect that their coming will bring a change and that they would learn from the experience.”

Ministering during the ordination, Father John Paul Abele of St. PioOrile, described priesthood as a gift from God.

He called on the new ordained priests to be patient with people and listen more.

More importantly, he encouraged them to be faithful in the ministry, knowing they will render account to God one day.

He challenged them to take their prayer lives seriously because priesthood is a 24-hour assignment that can easily lead to burn-out.

One of the new ordained priests, Rev. VitalisEzeigwe, expressed delight at the new elevation.

He said: “The post demands more responsibility but I hope that the grace of God will begin to speak in us.”

  • Okogie, Martins, raise fund for Oke Are Seminary

IN a bid to create a more conducive atmosphere for learning, old students of Nigeria’s oldest catholic school, Oke Are Seminary, recently came together in an atmosphere of conviviality to wine, dine and raise funds for the renovation of their alma mater.

The national president of the old boys, Mr. Segun Ogumade in his remarks, said it gives him great pleasure to be in the midst of his classmates 40 years after. He took time out to extol the virtues of those who have distinguished themselves in their various endeavours, especially those who have dedicated themselves to the service of God.

Mr. Deji Louis, an old boy, also extolled the virtues of his glorious days in the minor seminary and how he was spiritually moulded.

Retired Bishop of Lagos, His Eminence Cardinal Okojie in his remarks, congratulated the old boys on the occasion. He said the purpose of the fund-raising was to improve the condition under which priests are trained in the institution and provide a healthy and clean environment for the seminary. He said most seminaries are now raising funds through the help of donors and from societies and individual groups. He said the occassion is also serving as an opportunity for old boys to meet again after a long time, to recall past experiences, old nicknames and share old jokes; and concluded that it was indeed a reason to thank God.

He recalled with nostalgia the camaraderie, which saw them relate with each other with so much love and respect and declared hilariously that he still cannot forget his love for ‘ewa and ijebu garri.’ He added that the seminary in Oke Are was a beautiful sight to behold back then.

Typically, Cardinal Okogie also seized the opportunity of the occasion to address the ruling class. He said Nigerians are suffering too much at the hands of politicians, whom he said “should be our fathers and leaders,” and called for urgent interventions.

He condemned the hardship occasioned by the plummeting crude oil prices, saying that oil is not Nigeria’s only resources.

“As we speak, it’s a very difficult situation and most families are not finding it funny,” he said and advised the government to be more sensitive to the people’s plight.

He thereafter prayed for the success of the administration.

In his speech, the Archbishop of Lagos, His grace Rt Rev. Alfred Matins gave a brief insight into life in their days in the seminary and the number of bishops that the institution has produced. He singled out Archbishop Christian Cardinal Tumi from francophone West Africa, whom he said has done so much for the growth of the seminary and spread the gospel in French-speaking West Africa.

He listed some of the bishops who have passed through the seminary to include Cardinal Anthony Okojie, Bishop Francis Alonge of Ondo, Archbishop Felix Alaba Job, the retired bishop of Ibadan, Archbishop Adelakun of Oyo diocese, Bishop Kevin Joesph Aje of Sokoto diocese of blessed memory, Most Rev Dr, Albert Fasina of Ijebu Ode diocese and Rt, Rev Dr. Felix Ajakaiye of Ekiti diocese.
