  • 7 tips on talking to a girl about her first period

Talking about periods shouldn’t be one big talk at a particular age. Instead, start the conversation early and slowly build on your child’s understanding. Girls and boys need reliable information about periods. So make sure you talk to your sons too!

1 Talk about menstruation with your daughter as early as possible. Most girls get their first period when they’re between 10 and 15 years old so you should be ready to deliver the talk as soon as she asks about anything.

2 When her first period starts, this is the time to have a more in-depth discussion.

3 Don’t just let your daughter watch a video or give her a book to read. This doesn’t really allow her to remember or ask questions.

4 Have your daughter write down any of her questions. This is the perfect place for her to write down answers as well.

5 Always ask “What have you heard?” Since girls talk quite a bit, it is a good idea to find what your daughter thinks she knows. This is a great time to dispel any myths or correct anything that is false.

6 Help her pick out just the right products.

7 Discuss hygiene and how to take care of yourself.

8 Share ways to feel better and deal with things like cramps, etc.

9 Share your own experience with your daughter.

  • 5 ways to know she’s ready for you to propose

Even though the old saying goes “when you know, you know,” there are certain signs that it’s time to pop the question that you should look for. Here are ways to ensure she wants you to propose.

    1. She talks about your future together: This is one of the biggest signs your girlfriend wants to take your relationship to the “next step” and get engaged. If she constantly talks about your life together, possibly including buying a house, having children, moving somewhere, etc., she can definitely see a future with you and her being so open about this probably means that she wants you to propose.

    2. She brings you to every family gathering: If you two get married, you will officially become a part of each other’s family. If your girlfriend has been thinking about getting married, she’s probably made efforts to invite you to her family get-togethers. She wants her family to get to know you and vice-versa because she knows that if you get married, you’ll be part of this family! If your girlfriend is obviously pushing to include you in her family, this could be a sign that she wants you to officially join the family, meaning she wants you to propose.

    3. She starts the ‘baby’ talk, even if on a lighter note: This is one topic that even some married couples struggle to address. If your girlfriend randomly drops hints about how she likes babies or shares about her ideas of motherhood, it means she is comfortable talking about children with you. Remember, motherhood is not an easy topic to talk about with anyone unless a woman is comfortable with the person.

    4. She drops hints about how her friends are getting married: Does your girl keeps reminding you about her married friends and frequently expresses how happy she is for them? This might be a good sign that she looks at marriage with a positive attitude and takes inspiration from her married friends. It’s time to fetch the ring if she is surrounded by married couples and she loves spending time with them.

    5. She tells you: If she’s ready to get engaged, not all signs your girlfriend gives you will necessarily be “indirect.” In fact, she might just be straight-forward and tell you that she really wants to get engaged to you. This “sign” is difficult to misinterpret – there’s really no denying that she wants you to propose.

  • Google Chrome adds new features

Popular search engine, Google Chrome, has made updates to the browser and here is everything users need to know.

The newest version of Chrome, 76, recently started rolling out for users on all platforms and makes a number of substantial changes for users.

First, the browser will now block Adobe Flash content by default – Chrome has joined a number of other popular browsers in making such a move.

Adobe has declared it will remove support for Flash fully by the end of 2020 – the move from Google cements the end for the format.

Next, Chrome 76 makes a few changes to its signature Incognito Mode that, when enabled, kickstarts a number of extra privacy features for users.

Last month Google announced it would remedy a loophole that allowed sites to detect if a user was harnessing Incognito or not – the firm said it was making the move to ensure users could browse privately if they so desire.

The tech giant said: “Chrome’s Incognito Mode is based on the principle that you should have the choice to browse the web privately. At the end of July, Chrome will remedy a loophole that has allowed sites to detect people who are browsing in Incognito Mode.

“People choose to browse the web privately for many reasons. Some wish to protect their privacy on shared or borrowed devices, or to exclude certain activities from their browsing histories.

“In situations such as political oppression or domestic abuse, people may have important safety reasons for concealing their web activity and their use of private browsing features.

“We want you to be able to access the web privately, with the assurance that your choice to do so is private as well. These principles are consistent with emerging web standards for private browsing modes.”

Chrome 76 implements this change; a byproduct of the alteration is that sites allowing users to read a certain number of free articles will no longer be able to track how many a user has opened.

This means fans could theoretically bypass some internet paywalls.

Google admitted sites may have to change how they handle their paywall implementation with the release of Chrome 76.

The American firm noted however it would not make any alterations to Chrome that “undermines the principles of Incognito Mode”.

Google went on: “Our News teams support sites with meter strategies and recognise the goal of reducing meter circumvention, however any approach based on private browsing detection undermines the principles of Incognito Mode.

“We remain open to exploring solutions that are consistent with user trust and private browsing principles.”

In addition to its changes for Incognito and Flash, Chrome 76 also introduces over 40 security fixes for users.

Chrome 76 is rolling out right now for all platforms.

  • Google unveils new products, introduces Nigerian accent to map navigation

Google has announced the launch of new products and features to make life better for Nigerians digitally on Wednesday.

On the light-weight app, Google Go, features like Lens, Discover and Google assistant have been added. The lens feature allows the users interact with Google using cameras.

It is an image recognition technology that helps to identify the object or read barcodes, QR codes, labels and text and show relevant search results and information. Google officially launched Google Lens on October 4, 2017 and added the feature to the Google Go app.

Google Go users can now access Google Lens, point it at a sign, and listen to the words read out loud. If they don’t speak the language, they can translate it into their own. Today, Google is also launching support for Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo.

Google Go is aimed at enabling users of low RAM mobile phones get the best experience on Google. The app was launched in 2018 and designed to work offline optimally.

Another new product, Gallery Go has been added to help organise the users’ gallery by grouping photos into categories like nature, food, animals, screenshots, documents, people and selfies.

The app could also be used by people without reliable internet connection. Gallery Go brings many of the best features of Google Photos on device to help them find, edit and manage their photos even when they are offline.

The app is only 10MB to keep the phone light and fast, so that you can spend more time capturing memories.

Also, Google map has, for the first-time, launched a two-wheeler (Motorbike) direction mode and Nigerian accent to the driving directions – the first African country to add their language to the map. A street view mode for the Google map has been added to Abuja, Enugu, Benin city and Ibadan.

The tech firm also announced the launch of Bolo, a new speech-based reading tutor app for primary grade children. It is an app built to help children learn to read in English.

It encourages them to read out loud and then provides individual, customised feedback to help improve their reading capabilities. Like the Google Go, it is designed to work offline. The app has been launched previously in India and Ghana.

Google Country Manager, Nigeria, Julie Ehimuan-Chiazor, said the whole efforts is targeted towards making Google work better for Nigerians.

  • Five things you don’t know about Hippocratic Oath

The Hippocratic Oath is one of the most revered documents of history. It is a powerful rite of passage that connects generations of medical professionals around the world. Laid out in the oath are principles that provide the framework for modern medical ethics.

As the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) grants 412 foreign -trained doctors the nod to practice medicine in the country today, here are five facts you probably didn’t know about the Hippocratic Oath:

*The Hippocratic Oath was composed over 2,000 years ago around the years 3-5 BC. The original text was written in Ionic Greek by Hippocrates, who is considered to be the father of modern medicine in most western cultures.

*. The Oath is still held sacred by physicians: to treat the ill to the best of one’s ability, to preserve a patient’s privacy, to teach the secrets of medicine to the next generation and so on.

    * The content of the traditional Hippocratic Oath can be divided into 12 items: Covenant with the Greek god Apollo, Covenant with teachers, Commitment to students, Covenant with patients, Appropriate means & ends (the good of the patient not the physician), Limits on means & ends, Justice, Chastity, Confidentiality, and Accountability.

    * Most medical schools today have their students swear upon modernised version of the translation of the original Greek text, rather than the traditional version.

    * Many modern institutions have modified the content of the Hippocratic Oath to be more applicable to the time period. The most common changes to the modernized Oath include removing the prescription of sexual contact with patients, the ban against using abortive agents, the ban against euthanasia, and the agreement to be accountable for keeping the Oath.

  • BBNaija 2019: Nigerians react as MURIC demands ban of BBNaija

Reactions have trailed call of Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) on the federal government to immediately ban the popular reality TV show, Big Brother Naija.

MURIC, in a statement, attacked the federal government for allowing the BBNaija show to go on.

The statement reads in part: “We are being forcibly dragged to a world of nudity, shamelessness and open promiscuity. Inmates of BBNaija kiss, romance and engage in sex openly. BBNaija is Bohemian, anti-social, crude and immoral. It constitutes a potent danger to every home. BBNaija is Satanic. It is unacceptable.

“Where are our norms and values? Is it part of African culture to engage in sex in the open? Where are the authorities? Is the Ministry of Information and Culture sleeping? Is the National Orientation Agency on sabbatical? Who will protect our children from this despicable onslaught? Who did this to Nigeria?

“…To cap the edifice, MURIC calls for immediate and total ban on this satanic television show. We charge the Ministry of Information and Culture to move swiftly against BB Naija before moral debauchery becomes Nigeria’s middle name. Nigerian youth must be protected from themselves and the time to do so is now. We invite the National Assembly to intervene immediately and we appeal to traditional rulers to add their voices to this campaign.”

However, social media users reacted to the call by the MURIC to ban reality television show, Big Brother Naija (BBN).

Here are some reactions gathered from Twitter:

I’m not really a big fan of BBN but MURIC calling on Buhari to ban the TV show is another example of misplaced priorities.#BBNaijia
