MASSOB warns Uwazuruike against planned election

The Uchenna Madu-led faction of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has warned leader of the Biafra Independent Movement (BIM), Ralph Uwazuruike against ridiculing the genuine Biafra struggle with his planned election.

A statement by Madu cautioned Uwazuruike “to stop gambling with the Biafra project and parading himself as a Biafra leader or agitator as he does not have the mandate of genuine Biafra agitators like MASSOB, IPOB, Lower Niger Congress, Bilie Human Right Initiative and the Council of Elders of IPOB”.

The statement reads: “Though Uwazuruike has formed a new group to further his criminalities and cover his shameful acts of sabotage against Biafra, he remained expelled from all Biafra self-determination projects, both at home and in the Diaspora. Very soon, MASSOB shall come up with its final verdict on Uwazuruike’s offence and punishment.

“MASSOB knows that Uwazuruike’s noise of electing governors and lawmakers is a way to revive his damaged reputation, but it will not see the light of day because of the agreement he signed with Alhaji Hamzal Mustapha, Dokubo Asari, Fredrick Fasheun, Yerima Sani, among others, for the unity of Nigeria.

“In 2013, Uwazuruike agreed not to engage in anything that could jeopardise the sovereignty of Nigeria, after collecting N5 billion, which he promised to share with his members but did not.

“Uwazurike is deceiving his brainwashed members who still believe he will give them Biafra, not knowing he has sold them. Why is Uwazuruike cancelling the proposed election and prayer summit without telling his members the real reason? Who is he consulting? Does he have a good relationship with Igbo and Southsouth leaders? The only reason is that the DSS invited him and showed him the documents of the agreement he signed to maintain Nigeria’s oneness.

“MASSOB therefore warns Uwazurike to stop his false activities in the name of Biafra and keep silent until MASSOB comes up with its final verdict on his crime and acts of sabotage against Biafra.”

MASSOB blames Obiano for members’ death

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) is holding Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano responsible for the death of its members in Onitsha.

Members of MASSOB and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) were celebrating the release of Nnamdi Kanu when the Army allegedly attacked and killed some of them.

A statement by MASSOB’S leader, Uchenna Madu, said Anambra State was not the only state where “members of MASSOB and IPOB demonstrated, protested or jubilated because of Nnamdi Kanu, but we have not recorded any killings, harassment, massive arrest, clampdown, shootings, torture and unguided statements by other governors, except in Anambra.”

It added that when “Obiano visited the Hausa residents in Onitsha following the torching of a Mosque, Obiano sympathised with them without commiserating with the injured and relations of dead non-violent Biafra agitators.”

“He, rather, tactically supported their clampdown of the protesters. This executive order prompted the Army to kill, injure and arrest many of our members in Onitsha, including those killed during the celebration.

“Governor Obiano neither condemned the action nor commiserated with us. The history of IPOB /MASSOB struggle for Biafra will not be complete without Gov Obiano’s sabotage. The same history will never forget a similar genocide against MASSOB members by former governors Peter Obi in 2006 and Achike Udenwa in 2003.

“This exhibition of inferiority complex by some Igbo governors and political leaders is a sign of weakness and cowardice and the fear of the Hausa Fulani oligarchy,” Madu said.

MASSOB warns against Kanu’s continued detention

Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has warned against the continued detention of leader of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, despite a court order of release.

A statement by its leader Uchenna Madu said the violation of court order by the Directorate of State Security Service (DSS) showed Nigeria’s lawlessness and disrespect for the judiciary.

His words: “The continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu by DSS after the Magistrate and Federal High Courts discharged and acquitted him shows that the Nigerian judiciary is not independent.

“The independence of the three arms of government is a complete sham, which portrays Nigeria as an undemocratic state. It is a sign of frustration on Nigeria because Nnamdi Kanu and agitations for Biafra represent the very truth Nigeria knows but fails to identify with.

“I know Kanu; he’s a real Biafran who can never succumb to intimidation, deviation or compromise like Uwazuruike. His illegal detention will worsen the country’s already battered image. MASSOB will never relent in identifying with Kanu; we shall continue to press for his release with every legitimate action, supported and backed by internationally recognised laws, decrees and charters.”

  • Pro-Biafra protests are politically motivated – Uwazuruike

Separatist leader and founder of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, on Tuesday disclosed that the pro-Biafra protests rocking the Southeast and other parts of the country are politically motivated to paint the struggle in bad light.

Uwazuruike, who briefed journalists at the Ojukwu Memorial Library in Owerri, the Imo State capital, said the violent protests by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are breach of the non-violence position of MASSOB.

He said, “The current pro-Biafra protests are political, if not so where do they get the monies they share for those participating in the protests. We will actualize Biafra without spilling blood and all those behind the protest are sabotaging the genuine struggle.”

Uwazuruike, who was recently expelled by a faction of MASSOB, however stated that factions are healthy for the struggle.

“We welcome factions in the struggle because MASSOB cannot do it alone. All those preaching violence are not genuine because will not encourage violence in any form,” he stated.

    …Group condemns agitation

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Matthew Kukah, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to dialogue with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The renowned clergy also maintained that the ongoing agitation for Biafra by the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) is legitimate.

Speaking at the 41st Convocation Lecture of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Kukah said that the agitators have the right to make demands without being crucified for their actions.

Delivering a lecture titled ‘The Pursuit of Happiness: Some Thoughts On Human Rights, Freedom And Justice In Nigeria,’  Kukah counseled President Muhammadu Buhari to work with IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, in order to achieve national peace.

He stressed that the arrest of Kanu has led to calls from many parts of the world demanding his release.

Kukah said: “This country cannot continue this way. MASSOB has the right to seek Biafra since we have freedom of expression. The problem of Nigeria should not be with Kanu, but who let the door open.

“The president of Nigeria or any governor, unless they pay for mobilisation, cannot bring the number of people that Kanu brought out. The anxiety of Nigeria should be that a young man (Kanu) who can bring out this great number of people is worth doing business with.”

In a similar development, a pan Igbo group, Igbonekulie, has condemned the recent violent protests in the South-East over agitation for the state of Biafra by IPOB and MASSOB.

In a statement signed by its National President and Secretary, Prince Ben Onuora and Benjamin Obidegwu respectively, the group bemoaned the economic hardship inflicted on the people of Igbo speaking states and avoidable loss of lives as a result of the protests. While calling for a halt to these protests, the group said it is ready to partner with individuals and groups of goodwill in order to chart a new course for the reorientation of Ndigbo in a new Nigeria that gives hope for peace, equity, justice and progress.

In calling for a genuine integration of Ndigbo within the polity, the group said, “It is obvious that since the end of the Nigerian civil war; where a “no victor and no vanquished” promulgation was made, the Igbo speaking states and persons have continued to be treated as the vanquished of the country.

“In about every sphere of human and societal development, the Igbos are been made to hold the short end of the stick. This was again demonstrated in the early appointments made by President Muhammadu Buhari when nobody from the South-East zone was among the first thirty five appointments made,” the group said.

The group further called on President Muhammadu Buhari to revisit the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference and also order the release of IPOB leader.

  • MASSOB: Kanu should lead peace talks

MASSOB: Kanu should lead peace talks

The Uchenna Madu-led Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) yesterday disowned Wednesday’s meeting by leaders from Southeast and Southsouth with their northern counterparts on the pro-Biafra protests. The group wants its leader, Nnamdi Kanu to lead the peace talks.

At a news conference by MASSOB’s Director of Information, Samuel Edeson and Secretary- General, Ugwuoke Ibem Ugwuoke, MASSOB said none of the leaders had its mandate to dialogue with the Federal Government.

It said any dialogue must be led by detained leader of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu.

“We were shocked to learn that some northern leaders met with Dozie Ikedife and Senator Godswill Akpabio and discussed our agitation.

“We disown these people; we don’t know them. Before you discuss, you must first meet with those on the streets; we don’t know Akpabio, we don’t know Ikedife as far as this matter is concerned. Ikedife is not part of our agitation; he has shown hatred for Nnamdi, so how can he meet with government to discuss Nnamdi?

“We also understand that Ikedife’s Bilie Human Right Initiative has its agenda, it believes in the Nigerian Constitution. MASSOB does not believe in Nigeria’s Constitution because it is a fraud against our people.

“MASSOB and other pro-Biafra groups advise Bilie Human Right Initiative to retract its belief in the Nigerian constitution because this ties our hands to an unknown law against our people.

“In the last one month, we have been protesting peacefully against Nnamdi’s detention; if the Nigerian government is sincere on dialogue, it must meet with leaders of MASSOB and IPOB.

“It is curious that Akpabio, who disowned us by saying Akwa Ibom is not part of Biafra, now wants to negotiate on our behalf, this is fraud. We are advising the Nigerian government not to take them serious; we shall continue our peaceful protest, which we stopped temporarily.

“We have two simple demands-release Nnamdi Kanu; give us Biafra; we are not agitating for good roads or infrastructure.

“These people that claim to be Igbo leaders are not in control of the masses, we shall soon demand a referendum so that the world will know we are no longer interested in Nigeria.

“Any dialogue with the Federal Government without Nnamdi Kanu is nonsense; we demand that he be released and he will lead the dialogue.”

On Ralph Uwazuruike, who formed a new group, MASSOB said: “He is a confused person, he is propagating Nigeria’s unity; Igbo land is not landlocked, Biafra is not landlocked as he claimed. The Biafra the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu declared in 1967 is not landlocked. Uwazuruike does not know much about Biafra.

“He is a forgotten issue; nobody should take him serious; he is the greatest saboteur of Biafra. His name is a taboo.

“Similarly, there will be a revolution against the so-called Igbo leaders who are making negative comments against Biafra.”

Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed has advised religious leaders in the Southeast to appeal to pro-Biafra agitators to give peace a chance.

Mohammed spoke at the Peace Conversation with religious leaders, organised by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Abuja. He urged them to de-radicalise those who had been exposed to violent religious views.

The minister said it was the duty of religious leaders to preach undiluted messages of their faith and make their followers see reasons why Nigeria should stay together as an indivisible entity.

“You, our revered religious leaders, have a role to play in this respect. Top on the list is the need to de-radicalise those who have been exposed to extremist and violent religious views, especially in the Northeast.

“It is important for you to highlight the unadulterated version of the two dominant faith, Christianity and Islam; to remind adherents that nowhere did any of them preach hatred and violence,” he said.

The minister said though the agitation for Biafra was legitimate, the agitators should ventilate their discontent through the appropriate channels, while allowing the government to address the issues raised. He advised religious leaders to serve as appealing voice to the aggrieved.

His words: “At this time of agitation by persons who believe their interests have not been well catered for in the federation, our religious leaders can serve as an appealing voice to these aggrieved citizens.

“They can help them understand that while they have the right to ventilate their discontent, there is the need to do so using the appropriate and established channels, while allowing the government time to address the issues, without constituting themselves a threat to the peace of their neighbours.”

Stressing the necessity for peace, the minister said the level of destruction in the Northeast was inexplicable for the government to allow others plunge another part of the country into war.

“The kind of destruction I saw in those areas convinced me, more than ever, that the perpetrators are not adherents of any religion but a bunch of mad people.

“Our religious leaders must make this point loud and clear for the benefit of the gullible ones who may want to believe that those perpetrating the heinous killings in the Northeast subscribe to any faith.”

Mohammed explained that with the effort of the military to restore peace to the troubled region, Nigerians must support the government to promote peace in the country.

“The military is doing its bit to restore peace to the affected communities. What is missing, however, is the civilian component of the war, the need for Nigerians to support the military and own the war.”

The elders from across the six geo-political zones have set up a committee to dialogue with the pro-Biafra protesters.

Led by Maitama Sule, the elders met in Abuja on Wednesday and resolved to nominate members from the zones.

A communiqué at the end of the meeting identified unemployment and poverty as the major cause of the protest, stressing the need for dialogue.

“A committee will be set up to engage the Supreme Council of Elders of the Southeast and the protesting youth, with a view to addressing their grievances and recommending solutions.

“The dialogue will be expanded to include other critical stakeholders in the search of peace and stability in the country.”

A member of the forum, Dr. Sadiq Umar Gombe, who read out the communiqué, said: “Nigeria’s unity shall continue to remain sacrosanct despite the inherent imperfections in our nation-state and as such, the dialogue resolves to continually pursue the path of peace and stability.

“The protests, being conducted under guided and peaceful atmosphere, are part of democratic expressions.”

Dr. Gombe accused some Nigerian leaders as sponsors of the protest, noting that citing lopsided appointment as a reason for the agitation was not tenable.

He said President Muhammadu Buhari had been fair in the appointments so far made.

The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has urged lawmakers from the Southeast and Southsouth to intervene in the pro-Biafra protest.

A statement by the National Coordinator, Mr. Israel Uwejeyan, said the agitation was causing disaffection among youths.

“We, in Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC), call on youths in the Niger Delta and Southeast to rise up from mediocrity and challenge every attempt to cause chaos, dissatisfaction and disunity among Nigerians for selfish political gains.

“We urge lawmakers from Southeast and Southsouth to condemn the Biafra secession agitation.

“We want them to caution the move by some few persons  and we condemn the destruction of public and private property in Onitsha, Anambra State, and the intimidation of law abiding citizens.”

Uwejeyan advised youths agitating for secession to have a rethink and join the train of rebuilding a new Nigeria, urging them to explore reasonable avenues to channel their issues.

•IPOB women give seven-day ultimatum for Kanu’s release

MOVEMENT for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have announced a temporary halt to their protests for the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.

This is contained in a statement by Secretary of the Uchenna Madu-led MASSOB Ugwuoke Ibem Ugwuoke and IPOB’s spokesman Emma Powerful Ihejionueme.

It reads: “A joint resolution of MASSOB/IPOB on the demonstration against the detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is to halt the protest to pave the way for dialogue on Nnamdi Kanu’s release.

“Our withdrawal from the major cities of Biafra land is not out of cowardice but to prove maturity and professionalism as decent self-determination groups. We give the Federal Government an ultimatum to prove its seriousness and sincerity on the dialogue.

“We shall continue with our non-violent protest on Biafra. MASSOB and IPOB will never relent in the agitation for the actualisation of Biafra.

“We condemn the stupidity and statement of Ralph Uwazuruike that IPOB and MASSOB introduced violence to the Biafra struggle. Uwazuruike is a drowning man, who is living in yesterday’s shadow; he has lost grip on Biafra issues because of his deviation, compromise and romance with the Federal Government and this has affected his personality and diminished his name. It has also unsteadied the group.

“We warn Uwazuruike and his confused group to stop dragging MASSOB and IPOB into their shameless dance of visionless, missionless blind existence”.

The women wing of IPOB has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to release Kanu.

The women, who wore Biafra emblems and tops, engraved with Kanu’s portrait, vowed to take a more drastic action, if Kanu was not released.

They warned that Nigeria was sliding towards a dangerous part with the detention of Kanu, as they protested around the Ariaria International market junction on the Enugu-Port Harcourt road in Aba.

“IPOB women are giving a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu. It is either they release him or face our wrath. In Igboland, when women protest, it means the matter is serious. We decided to hold this protest to appeal to the Federal Government to release him.

“We can’t understand why the government is still detaining Kanu since he has been granted bail. IPOB sees this as part of the plot in the neglect of Ndigbo. This is another proof that Ndigbo are not wanted in Nigeria, if a freedom fighter like Kanu can be detained indefinitely.”

The protest caused a gridlock on the road.

Police arrest four MASSOB members in Ebonyi

Four members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) were in the early hours of Friday arrested by policemen attached to Ebonyi State police command.

The members who engaged in a peaceful protest along some streets in Abakaliki including Vanco junction were seen carrying placards, flags of the group and chanting songs of solidarity.

The development caused pandemonium within the state capital as keke operators and vehicles belonging to private individuals were diverted other adjoining streets to avoid significant disruption of economic activities in the state.

Police spokesman in the State, ASP George Okafor confirmed the arrest of the MASSOB members.

He threatened that the police in the state would not allow the group to gain any influence over the state as the command was prepared for any showdown with MASSOB.

So far, relative peace has since returned to the state capital as security operatives have been positioned at different strategic points to clampdown on the activities of MASSOB in the state.

IGP warns MASSOB, IPOB against threatening public peace

The Inspector-General of Police (IG), Mr Solomon Arase, has warned members of Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and  Indigenous People of Biafra  (IPOB) to stop threatening public peace or face the full weight of the law.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Force Spokesperson, Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Olabisi Kolawole, in Abuja on Wednesday.

Arase said that the warning followed the observation by the Police leadership of the increasing resort to acts of brigandage by sets of misguided individuals.

He said that the act also occasioned serious dislocation of business activities.

The IG stated that the increasing resort to acts of brigandage of this nature was pointing to a clear attempt by the brains behind these protests to test the will of security agencies.

He directed the mobilisation and deployment of Police Mobile Force (PMF) to reinforce security in the State Commands that MASSOB and IPOB are currently protesting.

He also directed AIGs in charge of Zone 5, Benin; Zone 6, Calabar and Zone 9 Umuahia as well as all Commissioners of Police in the affected States to henceforth maximally exercise their statutory Mandate in preventing any gathering that threatened public order and national cohesion.

“Any person or group of persons so arrested in furtherance to the enforcement of this order will be made to face the full wrath of the law.”

The IG advised parents and guardians to call their children and wards to order as the patience of the Force was being stretched to the limit.

He said that no individual or group interest could override the interest of the nation.

Arase said that the Police would not fold its arms to allow few misguided elements to continually force hardships on fellow Nigerians.

    •Inaugurates new leaders

A faction of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has expelled Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, who leads another faction of the group.

Its national officers yesterday inaugurated a new leadership, led by former National Director of Information Uchenna Madu and Ugwuoke Ibem Ugwuoke.

MASSOB warned Uwazuruike to stop “parading himself as the leader or using Ojukwu’s name to dupe Ndigbo to pursue his political ambition”.

A communique by the National Officers and Administrators at Okwe, MASSOB’s Headquarters, said “the development is to redeem and revive the lost spirit and confidence of the Biafra revolution in our people, friends and sympathisers.

“A vote of no confidence and total rejection has been passed in Ralph Uwazuruike. His inability to sustain and maintain Ojukwu’s dream of Biafra, his deviation into the mainstream of Nigerian politics and using the Biafra struggle to enhance his selfish political ambition, are the onus of our rejection of his association with Biafra struggle”.

The members also indicted the sacked MASSOB leader of defrauding members to enrich himself.

“The introduction of the Biafra international passport was a dubious means through which he generated about N1,000,000 for himself. The existence of the passport without Biafra sovereignty was illegal. Today, the passport is useless to holders, even Uwazuruike does not use it.

“The over N40 million realised from the dedication of the Biafran war veterans’ home in Okwe, built by MASSOB members, remains unaccounted for.

“In the light of these developments, we felt that Uwazuruike has betrayed the leadership mantle Dim Odimegwu Ojukwu bestowed upon him.”

Also reading its report, the four-man committee, which probed Uwazuruike’s leadership of MASSOB, indicted him of fraud and gross betrayal.

The committee, headed by  Comrade Samuel Edison, alleged that MASSOB contributed N4 billion in monthly dues and other levies in the last 16 years, but were unaccounted for.

“In the course of work, we found out that MASSOB members, in the last 16 years, contributed about N4 billion,  which remain unaccounted for.

“With these evidences and exposures, the committee  finds Uwazuruike guilty of corruption, embezzlement and betrayal of MASSOB struggle and living extravagant life as if he is a politician or government contractor. “The committee recommends that Uwazuruike be expelled from MASSOB”.

In his acceptance letter, Madu said: “Today’s event is a sign of new hope, vision and self-determination. The new leadership of MASSOB will work with other genuine  pro-Biafra groups in the spirit of Biafranism with unity of purpose.

“We are more determined and motivated for the cause we so much believe in, the vision we vowed to pursue, the mission that must be accomplished.

”We shall strengthen our already built relationship with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), BILIE Human Right Initiatives, Igbo Youth Cultural Association, United Eastern Congress, Lower Niger Congress and Niger Delta Self Determination groups.

“Non-violence and peaceful agitation shall continue to be our cardinal point. We shall never resort to armed struggle, though our oppressor provokes us.”

Uwuzuruike refused to comment when he was called.
