Release bodies of our members, says MASSOB

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) yesterday demanded the bodies of three of its members allegedly killed by soldiers during the raid on its security office on the Onitsha-Owerri Road, Onitsha, Anambra State.

MASSOB leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, who addressed reporters, said the release became imperative, following worries by the deceased’s families and MASSOB that the bodies be released for a befitting funeral, to prevent their spirits from roaming.

MASSOB also demanded the release of those arrested before, during and after the raid, who included, Friday Igiri, Kenneth Nwabueze and Ezeigwe .

The group’s leader spoke through his personal assistant, Emmanuel Omenka.

His words: “We demand the release of the bodies for funeral. We are surprised that soldiers always involve themselves in MASSOB’s affairs. For four days, they raided our security office at Mgbuka junction and arrested three of our members. They should tell us our offence.”

He added: “They should stop disturbing our members.”

  • Yuletide: MASSOB warns kidnappers, robbers in South East

The leadership of movement for the actualization of sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has warned those planning to engage in kidnappings and armed robbery during the festive period to stay clear of South East or face the wrath of the group.

The group assures Ndigbo of crimes free Christmas and New Year celebrations especially in Onitsha, Aba, Owerri, Abakiliki, Port-Harcourt, Enugu, Umuahia, Awka, Asaba, Okigwe, Afikpo.

In a statement yesterday in Onitsha, signed by its National Director of Information

Comrade Uchenna Madu, said MASSOB was ready to work with other security outfits in the region during the festive period to rid the area of criminals.

According to the statement, “MASSOB securities are on the ground to join other security agents in combating crimes and other social vices, in Igboland”

“We want our people to enjoy their stay in South East during this festive periods, we shall work in unity with other security agents and Government agencies like Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Government Traffic Agencies to achieve a wholesome peaceful environment and free movement of people and vehicles”

“MASSOB is now warning criminals, touts and Area boys parading themselves as Government agencies to stay clear of public roads and places”

“The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) wishes to assure our people- Ndigbo and other Easterners in general of the security of their lives, properties and other investment in this Christmas season.

“Our people that reside outside the region do no longer desire to return home during festive periods because of all sorts of criminal activities and social vices including kidnappings, arm robbery, raping and stealing, irrespective of heavy presence of Nigeria security agents in our land.

“The Nigeria mentality portrays Igboland as the den of kidnappers, arm robbery and uncomfortably in our people who reside outsides Igboland.

“Categorically, MASSOB wishes to inform Ndigbo that such wicked impression is to tarnish the industrious image of Igboman, to persuade our people to hate their land and their native villages

“The Northern part of Nigeria is full of terrorism and bloodshed as a result of Boko Haram and Islamic fundamentalist activities, while other areas are engaged in raping, incest and other crime,” MASSOB said.

  • MASSOB, security agents clash in Onitsha

    • Four killed •MASSOB blasts APGA for witch-hunting

Four persons were reportedly killed yesterday in Onitsha, Anambra State when members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) clashed with security agents.

MASSOB leader Ralph Uwazuruike, who spoke through the Director of Information, Uchenna Madu, said the organisation was witch-hunted because it refused to support the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Madu said a joint team of army, police and men of the Department of State Security Services (DSS) stormed MASSOB headquarters on Onitsha-Owerri Road and allegedly opened fire on their members.

He said 87 persons were injured and denied medical attention because of lack of police medical permit.

The MASSOB leader alleged that about 18 vehicles belonging to MASSOB members and traders at Ngbuka-Obosi, Old Motor Spare Parts Obosi, 137 motorcycles were burnt and N920,000 taken by the security agents.

MASSOB alleged that other items destroyed included 23 bags of rice, four bags of beans, 11 bags of garri and 228 tubers of yam and other food items.

“This devilish act of cowardice meted out on MASSOB was not unconnected with our refusal to allow our name to be used by some desperate politicians, who wanted to score cheap political goal, using our platform.

“We issued a statement distancing ourselves from APGA and its candidate ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

“We are very quite aware that the stand we took did not go down well with some persons in the state, hence the attack was to disorganise us and browbeat us to submission.”

But The Commander 302 Artillery Regiment Onitsha , Col T.A Gagariga said no body died.

”The police is in charge of joint patrol, we are only supporting with other security agencies but because they saw Army vehicles everybody was shouting the Army.

”Nobody was killed and there was no casualty as at the time of this report. Some people were arrested and they were all at the Inland Town Police Station.”

Police spokesman Emeka Chukwuemeka, however, said he had not been officially briefed on the matter.

  • APC hails MASSOB for disowning APGA

APC hails MASSOB for disowning APGA

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has hailed the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) for disowning its purported endorsement of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State, Willy Obiano.

It gave the commendation yesterday in a statement through its Southeast Zonal Publicity Secretary, Osita Okechukwu.

Okechukwu said MASSOB has, by this noble act, separated the wheat from the chaff.

He praised MASSOB for exposing Governor Peter Obi and his “empty shell” called APGA by distancing itself from the desperados in the party.

Okechukwu said MASSOB had not only demonstrated that it was truly pan-Igbo, but had shown that what it (APGA) had in Anambra State today was Agulu Peoples Grand Alliance, and not All Progressives Grand Alliance, which the late Ezeigbo Gburugburu, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, promoted.

The statement reads: “Chief Ralph Uwazurike and his MASSOB leadership have done Ndigbo proud, for giving Governor Obi water with the bitter cup he gave others. Hence reminding him how he abandoned MASSOB in the hour of need.

“Was Governor Obi not the one who ordered shoot at sight against MASSOB in Onitsha in 2006?

“How on earth can a governor, who suddenly remembered to ‘spray’ money, even on the Adoration ground, be taken serious?

“APC could have been outraged if MASSOB has forgotten that till date, Governor Obi has neither followed up nor sued the police for the Esu River tragedy, where MASSOB members, allegedly shot by the police, were found floating.”

Okechukwu urged MASSOB to remain steadfast and impartial.

  • MASSOB to choose candidate soon

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), yesterday said it would participate in the November 16 governorship poll.

It said it would soon announce the candidate of its choice , adding that Anambra indigenes would support its candidate.

MASSOB’s Director of Information Uchenna Madu spoke to The Nation yesterday in Awka, Anambra State’s capital.

He said MASSOB’s members having voter cards were about 120,000, adding that a group with such a number of voters could not be a spectator in an important poll.

Madu said: “MASSOB under our leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, is an asset to be reckoned with in Igbo land. Any major event as the Anambra State governorship election without our participation is a mess.

“MASSOB does not belong to any party, but we can vote for any candidate, who is the best among the lot, in the interest of the state and Ndigbo.

“We evaluate many things, including the integrity and personality of the candidates. We are looking for a man, who can carry every resident and indigene of Anambra along.”

He said MASSOB had discovered that the non-indigenes constituted about 42 per cent of the population, adding that most of them would participate in the poll.

“We need a governor, who will promote industrialisation and urbanisation. We will vote for a candidate, who has the Igbo interest at heart.

“We want a governor, who will establish and equip technical schools and mechanic and automobile villages for our unemployed youths.

“We are also looking for a man, who will put in place, a workable agricultural technology.

“The security of the Ndigbo is paramount in MASSOB’s agenda. So, our candidate must carry every security-conscious organisation along in combating crimes.

“The interest of MASSOB is not only in Anambra, but also in the entire Southeast and other Igbo speaking areas.

“We appreciate the efforts of the Army, Police and other security agencies. But they are not enough.

“Governors in other geopolitical zones know the roles of their people in complementing the duties of security agencies. This is why in the Southwest, governors employ the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) members in combating crimes.

“In the North, the governors have established the Islamic traditional security agencies, the Southsouth governors did same through the militants. But the Southeast governors are underrating the roles of MASSOB in combating crimes.

“So, in the Anambra governorship poll, we will vote for a dynamic candidate because we want the best for Ndigbo,” Madu said.

According to him, in each local government, MASSOB had what he called regional administrators, while in each village and ward it had provincial administrators.

“So, our structure cuts across every nook and cranny of each state in the Igbo speaking areas. We are on ground and with our structure and strength, we cannot be ignored by anybody or group,” Madu said.

MASSOB to Fed Govt: on Biafra we stand

ABOUT 200 Members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) yesterday at Nkwo Square Omor declared Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State as a MASSOB territory.

The group, led by Mazi Chris Mocha, the Deputy National Director of Information and Mr. Emma Dinyelu, the Regional Director for Sanitation Anambra East, spoke during a peaceful rally at Omor to sensitise the people towards the struggle for the creation of the Republic of Biafra.

The rally was attended by youths, clergymen, chiefs and kingmakers from the eight autonomous communities, including Anaku, Umolum, Umumbo, Igbakwu, Ifite-Ogwari, Omasi and Unueje.

The Regional Administrator for Ayamelum Local Government, Chief Arinze Igbani, said the area with fertile land had rich agricultural potential and crude oil deposit.

He urged the people to register as MASSOB members, adding: “There is nothing like freedom.”

Mazi Mocha faulted meteorologists for giving a false alert that Ayamelum residents should vacate their homes.

  • Police ‘destroy’ MASSOB’s office in Anambra

Police ‘destroy’ MASSOB’s office in Anambra

There was confusion in Omor, Anyamelu Local Government Area of Anambra State, yesterday. The police in Anaku, the council headquarters, allegedly stormed the office of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and destroyed it.

This occurred two days after the inauguration of the office.

Briefing reporters, the MASSOB Director of Information in the area, Joseph Tagbo, alleged that the police invaded their office and destroyed it two days after its inauguration.

“They vandalised and carted away equipment and cash.”

He said he wondered what their offence was, which warranted the destruction, adding that MASSOB was a defenceless body fighting for a sovereign state of Biafra.

Tagbo decried the police for provoking a non-violent group.

MASSOB’s Onitsha Region Four Administrator Arinze Igbani and the Director of Transport, Chief Charles Oputa, described the police action as barbaric. They said it would not deter MASSOB from its struggle to actualise a Biafran nation.

According to Chief Oputa, now that MASSOB was working to ensure a hitch- free Christmas season, “the police have destroyed our office. It is unfortunate because we did not commit any offence.”

Efforts to speak to the police spokesman Emeka Chukwuemeka were not successful, but a source in the police confirmed the incident, saying MASSOB was not recognised by the government and should not have offices.

  • NBA to Obi: ban MASSOB

    NBA to Obi: ban MASSOB

The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Onitsha branch, yesterday urged Anambra State Governor Peter Obi to proscribe the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).

The NBA said the activities of commercial motorcyclists also known as Okada be banned.

The lawyers spoke in a communique issued at the end of an emergency meeting in Onitsha.

Its chairman Mr. B. C. Maduechesi said it was necessary to ban MASSOB because of the unscrupulous activities of the group in recent times including the attack and assault on Onitsha NBA Secretary, Onyechi Ononye and his wife. They were also dispossessed of their personal effects by those they identified as MASSOB members, the NBA alleged.

The NBA warned its members to desist from being registered members of MASSOB but to restrict their relationship with MASSOB to only lawyer/client level, warning that any member found associating with MASSOB beyond lawyer/client level would be sanctioned.

But MASSOB leader Ralph Uwazuruike, told reporters that those who attacked the NBA scribe and his wife could not be MASSOB members because attacking people was not part of their struggle.

He challenged the NBA to produce evidence of the identities of the attackers if they were sure.

He added that MASSOB would not hesitate to deal ruthlessly with any member found involved in such act. He did not speak on the call by NBA for the banning of Okada.

The NBA insisted on official protest to the government to enforce the ban on commercial motorcycle business which is dominated by MASSOB members.

The NBA said it would channel its grievances to the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the lawyers’ body for onward transmission to the presidency and National Assembly for effective clampdown on MASSOB activities in the state since they are aware that so many lives have been lost as a result of MASSOB’s nefarious activities which it alleged had gone beyond the control of the state government.

MASSOB Director of Information, Uchenna Madu said: “NBA alleged that MASSOB molested their members but we stand to say that those who molested their members were not our members. Are we so stupid and callous that we shall bite the hands that assisted us in legal matters?

“MASSOB has a very good relationship with Southeast NBA for being sympathetic to our cause. Every effort we made to meet with the leadership of Onitsha NBA in order to ascertain and verify their allegation against MASSOB was frustrated. With the hurry the NBA is prosecuting MASSOB on this matter, we suspect they are being used by our enemies to tarnish our image”.

  • Police seize 114 Biafran flags, pounds from MASSOB members

Police seize 114 Biafran flags, pounds from MASSOB members

The Police are set to arraign six members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), for alleged illegal activities.

The suspected MASSOB leaders arrested on August 6 according to Delta Police are: Ndubisi Ezeocha, 20, Francis Onuigbo, 28, Emeka Izigbo, 28 and Andrew Nwufulu, 26

Delta Police spokesman Lucky Uyabeme who gave the names added: “On August 7, one Emeka Okafor ‘m’ aged 52 years, a native of Nkanu in Enugu State and the acclaimed leader of the group was arrested with five other suspects.”

Uyabeme, an ASP, said the suspects would be charged to court at the end of investigation.

He listed the items recovered from them to include, 114 Biafran flags, two boots, 129 Biafran pounds and ten shillings.

Others things recovered from them he said, include: 32 membership forms and other documents, ten pairs of complete Biafran uniforms with name tags, three cutlasses, seven hard cover notebooks for minutes of meeting, two military belts and one expended cartridge.

He said the police would not allow any part of the state to be used as breeding ground for any criminal activity, insisting that acts of the suspects were “treasonable and the government will not condone such lawlessness.”

Okafor, who is the Coordinator of MASSOB in Anioma/Ndokwa East region, said he was arrested last week and has been in police detention. in police detention.

Police accused the suspects of attacking vigilance men at Powerline and Ominigboma areas of Asaba.

Okofor insisted that they were arrested because of the growing popularity of MASSOB.

His words: “This is a sector, how can we go and attack them. They are afraid that if MASSOB continues to be visible, they would not continue to harass people. They are street people.

“Nothing much happened, there were people that came there and wanted to sympathise with flood victims and three of my members went there. Unfortunately one of them, who has not been given proper MASSOB training, went with them.

“And while there, they were pushing each other trying to get space and in the process the vigilance people slapped one of my boys and he retaliated. And then the vigilante people called policemen from ‘B’ Division. Instead of coming to settle the matter, the police started arresting our members, nothing again.”

He said MASSOB remained a peaceful association that is going about its activities without intimidating, harassing or attacking members of the public, adding that they were attacked by crooks who removed everything that the police paraded as exhibits.

“We did not go on road block neither did we go on demonstration. We were at a place and they went there to search everything. Those boys are crooks, they searched everywhere and brought out these moneys. The money is for me, we keep the money knowing that it is a legal tender to the Biafran people, so we hide it because we know the quality of it,” he said.

  • MASSOB denies cursing Abia govt

THE National Director of Information of the Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Comrade Uchenna Madu, has denied that the group ever placed any curse on Abia State government officials or any government for that matter. Madu was reacting to a curse allegedly placed on the Abia State government by the regional information officer of MASSOB, Sunny Okoroafor who said that the group had placed a curse on the state for alleged poor performance. Speaking with newsmen in Umuahia, Madu explained that the orientation and philosophy of the group do not encourage doing any form of performance assessment score card on leaders in the country. Madu said that the group has never imagined monitoring government leaders in the South East, “as we see them as partners in progress and in our struggle for the actualisation of the sovereign state of Biafra, which we are sure, will come to pass.” He noted that there was room for improvement on some service delivery within and around the South East states, “but our National Leader, Chief Ralph Uwazurike values the position of elders as it is a common custom in Igbo land and we are not ready to go against that for any reason.” The National Director of Information said: “It will be viewed as serious aberration for the group to be seen as deriding elders and government officials in the South East, instead of joining hands with them to work out modalities of ensuring that Ndigbo take their pride of place in the country”.
