  • MASSOB set to intervene in saga

The Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), says it has concluded plans to intervene in the political crisis in Abia State between Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and Dr. Uchechukwu Ogah over the governorship seat.

The group chided the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leadership in the South East for keeping quiet over what it called the political time bomb in Abia State.

In a statement issued by (MASSOB) yesterday, signed by Comrade Chima Umunna, Director of Social Welfare and Conflict Resolution of the group, and made available to reporters, said Ndigbo no longer need  bloodletting in the zone.

He said (MASSOB) was intervening in the matter as a stakeholder in the affairs of Ndigbo, while suing for peace and calm, declaring that the issue had caused tension in the South East.

According to the statement, “while other groups, individuals, supporters and loyalists of Uchechukwu Ogah and Okezie Ikpeazu are spurring and calling for political war in Abia State, MASSOB calls for dialogue and mutual understanding which Ndi Abia need most now.

“We can’t continue to expose and throw Igboland into the theatre of political war because of group or personal interest which creates an indirect opportunities for our political, tribal and Religious enemies to rubbish the integrity and uniqueness of Ndigbo in the name of wading and solving our political matters.”

MASSOB, further said that Ndigbo had lost many people before now and would not want to lose additional lives in the name of politics, while calling the gladiators to sheathe their swords

“The beginning of this year, more than enough blood had been shed in Igbo land.

“We don’t want another set of Igbo youths or elderly ones to be killed on the altar of showing political supremacy in Abia State

“For the sake of Abia State and Ndigbo, Okezie Ikpeazu and Uchechukwu Ogah must sheath their swords now and embrace peace.

“MASSOB will engage patriotic, credible and non-partisan Igbo leaders to assist in establishing a lasting peaceful atmosphere in Abia State.

“MASSOB will no longer tolerate the engagement or activities of hired thugs, youths and women groups to cause political tension in Abia State again.

“MASSOB also blames the South East leadership of PDP for keeping quiet over this political time bomb in Abia State,” the group wrote.

  • MASSOB, APGA berate Igbo leaders for ‘nonchalance’

The Movement for Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) yesterday blasted Igbo leaders for their silence on issues affecting the Southeast.

It described them as selfish and disunited.

The movement especially berated governors and National Assembly members of Igbo extraction for allegedly keeping silent over issues affecting the zone.

A statement by MASSOB National Leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu, said Igbo leaders were responsible for the current poor state of the zone.

It described the zone’s current leaders as self-seeking.

The statement reads: “The Southeast has continued to suffer a lack of good leadership because the people our people wanted to represent them at state and national levels – as governors and legislators – were not allowed to emerge during the 2015 general elections. The wishes of the people were not allowed to prevail at the polls and we have continued to suffer for this. The people were completely rigged out during the polls and the effect is telling on them.

“Many governors and National Assembly members in the zone were imposed on the people by their godfathers. So, Ndigbo will continue to experience a lack of good leadership that will speak and protect them and their interests when it matters most.

“We in the MASSOB are saying we will no longer allow such to happen again because the people who will represent Ndigbo politically are those we are fighting for in the struggle. Today, our brother, Nnamdi Kanu, has been abandoned. All the senators, House of Representatives members and governors of Igbo extraction have refused to speak out on the incarceration of Kanu.

“The governors are not united and have not had any meeting to discuss the affairs of Southeast. This is worrisome.”

Also, the Deputy National Secretary of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Jerry Obasi, blamed the situation on the alleged imposition of Igbo leaders on the people.

The politician urged Igbo leaders to close ranks to remedy what he called the battered image of the zone.

He said: “I wonder the kind of politicians we are breeding these days: self-seeking politicians. I don’t blame them because they are products of flawed elections. They are products of elections that do not reflect the wishes of the people. I am not happy about their behaviours.

“I watched the burial of the victims of the Nimbo massacre (in Enugu State). There was no any Southeast governor who was there with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi except Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, who came to the programme.

“It is unfortunate that other Southeast governors and lawmakers have refused to speak out on the welfare of the people of the zone.

“The Igbo should use the 2019 election to chart a new political course. Nobody is saying anything as regards the Igbo man, even though they are the voice of the people elected to represent the people.

“The Igbo have continued to dwindle politically. Look at the way Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu is persecuted. No Southeast governor has said anything about it. Today, he is the biggest political office holder in the zone. We are supposed to protect that his office and guard it jealously.

“The Igbo man is now a sheep without a shepherd. Yet, they want to strike down the only shepherd we have so that the sheep will scatter.

He said: “The Igbo should begin to come together; they should begin to think wise politically. I saw the way Metu was battered until he accepted to return the N400 million they said he stole.”

  • VON chief to MASSOB, IPOB: forget Biafra agitation

The Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu, at the weekend urged separatist groups to forget their self-actualisation agitation and support President Muhammadu Buhari to rid the country of corruption.

Okechukwu said he supported the President’s position that if Nigerians failed to kill corruption, it would kill the nation.

The VON chief noted that ethnic merchants and religious bigots hid under such fault lines to corruptly enrich themselves.

Okechukwu spoke in Enugu at a reception organised for him and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, by their kinsmen, under the aegis of Ekeh Progressives Forum (EPF).

Among the groups clamouring to breakaway from Nigeria are: the Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Niger Delta Avengers and similar new movements.

Delivering a speech, titled: True Federalism: Panacea or Placebo to Nigeria’s Paralysis? Eke Town as a Case Study, at a dinner part of the reception, the chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) blamed greed and corruption for the inequality in the country.

Speaking before an audience, which included former Vice President Alex Ekwueme and former Senate President Ken Nnamani, the VON chief recalled that President Buhari, in his 2015 Chatham House speech, described the inequality in the country as the tiny island of the affluent in the ocean of misery.

Okechukwu said: “Corruption, in all its ramifications, not just the fleecing of the state fund, includes petty human frailties, like jealousy, hate, stereotypes and prejudice. We shall presently return to these two opaque pages of the same epitaph of greed and corruption and commonly misunderstood theme.

“These two opaque pages may help us to show that ethnicity and religion play less crucial roles in our dysfunction than greed and its grandson, corruption. Ethnicity and religion are more of the tools of scavengers and predators. It would amaze us to look closely at our communities, local council areas and zones. We are most likely to find that they are the victims of the cankerworm called corruption.

  • Tension over detention of 19 MASSOB members

Tension over detention of 19 MASSOB members

Nine years after 19 members of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), including a cripple, were arrested; they have remained in detention without bail or conviction. In this report, our correspondent, Nwanosike Onu in Awka, reports on the intrigues that have delayed their trial and the tension the development has generated in the South-East zone

There is tension amongst members of the Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) following the continuous detention of 19 of its members in prisons in Anambra State since 2007 when they were arrested.

Out of the number, one is a cripple while another is a female, who, according to a recent report, has fallen sick as a result of lack of medical attention.

It would be recalled that the affected persons are facing a seven-count charge, bordering on treason, acts of terrorism and kidnapping.

They were arrested by the security agencies in Anambra State nine years ago when they allegedly declared the Republic of Biafra when the group was still under the leadership of Chief Ralph Uwazuruike.

Since then, the agitated members alleged that the suspects had been abandoned or neglected at various prisons in Ekwuluobia, Awka and Onitsha as they have been denied bail.

Reacting to the tension caused by the development, the new leader of MASSOB, Comrade Uchenna Madu, has expressed worry even as he lamented that affected members have families who they were supposed to take care of.

He also lamented the continuous adjournment of their case at the Federal High Court, Awka, pointing out that this has further complicated the matter.

Following the delay in the dispensation of justice on the matter, MASSOB said this week it had concluded arrangements to petition the National Judicial Council (NJC) over the issue.

The detained MASSOB members, according to their leader, are Sebastian Amadi, Ikechukwu Chikwem, Peter Igbokwe, Uchenna Nicholas, Uche Idika, Casmir Odokara, Eni Kalu, Chidiebere Ekwem.

Others are Chima Asoh (a cripple), Ojimba Anyanwu, Ndubuisi Okanu, Emmanuel Orji, Michael Okezie, Ikechukwu Aghari, Mmaduabuchi Asika, Chinwike Irondi, Chukwuma Kalu, Innocent Orji and Onyekachi Orji (female).

When their case came up in Awka on Monday this week, the presiding judge was absent, a development that made the affected MASSOB members to cry openly, wondering why they should be in detention for nine years without being granted bail.

According to Madu, “the pro-Biafra detainees had been languishing in prison since 2007. Three judges had handled their matter, yet they had not been granted bail.

He said the case started with Justice Peter Olayiwola who handed over to Justice Ojukwu before Justice M.I. Abubakar took over.

Later on, Justice Abubakar was transferred to Abakaliki in Ebonyi State, yet he had not allowed the new Judge in Awka to handle the matter as he comes occasionally from Abakaliki to preside over the MASSOB case.

“Since nine years, the prosecution has called only three witnesses and our lawyer has not been allowed to call any witness,” he said, adding, “What surprised us was that the judge said he would transfer the case file from Awka to Abakaliki which, to us, will make the attendance to court sittings more difficult for us.”

“We are also surprised that he wants to transfer the case to Abakaliki when we had taken a fresh plea from the new judge in Awka.”

“At the last sitting, Justice Abubakar was absent and we were informed that he had adjourned the matter to October 26, 2016.”

“As far as we are concerned, the Judge has abused the rights of the detainees by refusing to grant them bail and deliberately frustrating the hearing of the matter.”

“Why can’t he allow the new Judge presiding here in Awka to continue with the matter, the MASSOB leader queried?

Last week, the MASSOB leader called on the governors of Anambra and Imo states to facilitate the release of the detained MASSOB leaders in the interest of justice and equity.

Meanwhile, MASSOB has warned Anambra State Government to stop linking it with any form of bribery or other acts capable of undermining the integrity of Ndi Igbo.

The group debunked claims from certain quarters that it met with Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, recently for alleged gratification.

According to the movement, “our attention has been drawn on a destructive rumour going round Anambra State that Governor Willie Obiano had induced MASSOB with monetary leverage to compromise the activities and the struggle for Biafra actualisation”.

“The reformed MASSOB can never be bought or hijacked by political elements; we cannot compromise or sabotage the struggle for emancipation and survival of our people”.

“MASSOB warns the Government of Anambra State to stop dragging the name of MASSOB or Biafra to the mud. We have not sent anybody or group of people to represent MASSOB in any capacity in their dealings with pro Biafra groups”.

“Anybody or group of people who claim to represent or sent by MASSOB in any capacity in dealings with Anambra State  Government is fake, including some members of staff of Anambra State Government.”

“In as much as MASSOB is willing to partner or work with other Igbo groups, state governments and individuals, it must be for Igbo and Biafra’s interest not compromising the ultimate hope of Ndigbo.”

“MASSOB will continue to represent the genuine interest of Ndigbo with all selflessness, total commitment and consistency,” Madu said.

  • MASSOB restates support for Niger Delta Avengers

MASSOB restates support for Niger Delta Avengers

The Uchenna Madu-led Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has reaffirmed its support for the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA).

The group was reacting to the reaction of the Ralph Uwazuruike-led Biafra Independent Movement (BIM), which has distanced itself from the NDA.

In a statement issued in Enugu and signed by MASSOB director of Information, Samuel Edeson, the group said “the latest development has further shown and proved to the Biafran people that the man called Ralph Uwazuruike and his associates like Sunny Okoroafor are not existing or clamoring for Biafra.”

It queried: “How can a Biafran person in his or her right senses deny or condemn the Niger Delta Avengers and other genuine Niger Delta groups agitating for Biafra?

“If reformed and only one MASSOB under the leadership of our leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu, is wrong in supporting the Niger Delta Avengers on their activities for Biafra actualization and restoration, why is it that other pro-Biafra groups have not condemned MASSOB?”

It further chided Uwazuruike and Okoroafor for having directly and consciously proved that they were enemies of Ndigbo.

The MASSOB insisted: “This reaction of Ralph Uwazuruike further proved his romance with the Federal Government through DSS to scuttle and sabotage efforts made for independence of Biafra from Nigeria.

“MASSOB wish to remind Biafran people that it’s on record which can never be erased that Ralph Uwazuruike was expelled from MASSOB on 30th November, 2015 at MASSOB headquarters, Okwe for numerous criminal activities, open/shameful political romance with Federal Government, sabotage against genuine Biafran activities, signing of documents for enthronement of one indivisible Nigeria, etc.

“After a week of the expulsion, he quickly formed his new group called Biafra Independent Movement (BIM).

“Uwazuruike is no longer part of MASSOB, including his BIM members. They should stop deceiving themselves by claiming (to be) MASSOB members.

“Biafran people know where they belong.”

  • Murder: Court remands seven pro-Biafra activists in prison

A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State, has remanded seven pro-Biafra activists in prison over the alleged murder of three police officers.

The accused persons are facing trial for allegedly killing three police officers including ASP Genesis Akagha, Sgt. Itoro Thompson and Cpl. Biosu Onyeka of the Delta State Police Command.

The incident occurred in Asaba on May 30 during a demonstration by pro-Biafra agitators including members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).

Other charges leveled against the accused persons include cultism, conspiracy, membership of unlawful society and illegal possession of arms.

The offenses, according to the charge sheet, are punishable under various sections of the Criminal Code, Cap C.21 Vol.1 Laws of Delta State of Nigeria 2006, and the Anti-Kidnapping and Anti-Cultism/Terrorism Cap C.28 Law No. 8 of Delta State of Nigeria, 2013.

The accused persons are – Ifeanyi Ani (25), Emehelu Harrison (25), Joseph Iheanacho (45), Izuchukwu Okpara (27), Dickson Anyamene (23), Chisom Obiakonwa (19) and Chigozie Ogbuzuru (31).

Their plea was not taken by the court presided over by F.I. Dikeh, who ordered that they should be remanded in prison and adjourned the matter to July 11 for mention.

  • Stop barricading streets, Anambra APC tells MASSOB

Stop barricading streets, Anambra APC tells MASSOB

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State has urged the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) to stop barricading public roads for any form of demonstration.

The party also condemned the statement by Anambra State government that MASSOB’s demonstration was illegal, the demonstrators not having obtained a police permit.

This idea, according to the APC, was an antiquated one, coming from a tottering government that had lost touch with reality.

A statement by the Publicity Secretary Okelo Madukaife said the need for police permit had been proactively overruled by superior courts.

The statement reads: “It is our view that the Anambra State government failed in its responsibility to fill a dialogue and care vacuum that led to the avoidable carnage.

“We recall with pain, that this is not the first time, and that such similar failures and lack of respect for life led to the demolition of suspects’ property ahead of trial and in some cases, no trial afterwards.

“We urge youths of Anambra State and their counterparts outside the state to embark on the peaceful path of trading ideas, not coercion on why they think Nigeria should be discussing Biafra now.

“We strongly advise against picking up arms against the state, as such beaten path belongs to the distant past, but insist that grievances must be brought to the fore through a more responsive representation in Awka and Abuja, to be squarely addressed, particularly as it affects the structures of the current federation.

“Our Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reviewed the clash between demonstrators from the group (IPOB) and (MASSOB) on one hand, and security agencies deployed in Anambra State as part of the larger Southeast, to the extent of information so far available, and wish to condole the yet to be identified families of those who lost their lives in that incident.

“The level of casualties is high and is clearly avoidable with greater determination on the part of all citizens to obey and work within the law.

“We reassert that every group in the polity is by the expressed guarantee of the 1999 Constitution entitled to celebrate and to protest peacefully, respecting the right of others not to agree with their pursuit.

“In this wise, we call on the security agencies to review their mode of operation, paying heed to the casualty figures just recorded in the May 30 crisis, which surprisingly was peculiarly high in Anambra State.”

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has warned the Anambra State government to stop linking it with bribery or other acts capable of undermining the integrity of Ndi gbo.

“Anyone or group of people who claim to represent MASSOB in dealings with the Anambra state government is fake, including some workers of the Anambra state government.

“In as much as MASSOB is willing to partner other Igbo groups, state governments and individuals, it must be for Igbo and Biafra’s interest, not compromising the ultimate hope of Ndigbo.

“MASSOB will continue to represent the genuine interest of Ndigbo with all selflessness, total commitment and consistency.

“MASSOB will continue to hold Governor Obiano responsible for the murderous killings of members of pro-Biafra groups in Nkpor.”

  • ‎ Police arraign 13 MASSOB members in Enugu

The prosecution counsel, Mr. Damian Njoku, said the suspects allegedly belonged to unlawful society called MASSOB and took part in illegal assembly.

Njoku said they committed an offence punishable under Sections 495(a) and 106 of the Criminal Code cap 30 Vol.11 Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria, 2004.

The suspects, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

  • Herdsmen attacks: Okogie, Iwuanyanwu, MASSOB spit fire

Herdsmen attacks: Okogie, Iwuanyanwu, MASSOB spit fire

Tension remained high across the land yesterday in the aftermath of recurring murder of innocent citizens by suspected herdsmen, particularly Monday’s invasion of Nimbo in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State.

At least 20 people were killed during the invasion.

Although the army has deployed troops in Enugu and Kogi states in response to the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari that the culprits be fished out and prosecuted accordingly, many Nigerians said yesterday that the federal government was tardy in its handling of the menace.

Retired Catholic Archbishop of Lagos State, Anthony Cardinal Okogie, asked President Buhari to arrest the situation before it gets out of hand whileIgbo leader and publisher of Champion newspaper, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, called the Nimbo attack a humiliation of the Igbo.

“The greatest humiliation you can give to an Igbo man is to attack him in his home. That is come to his home, kill his wife, his children and destroy his house,” Iwuanyanwu said.

Goddy Uwazurike, president of Aka Ikenga, an Igbo think-tank organization, deplored what he termed “Federal Government’s nonchalant attitude to the issue.”

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohaneze, has summoned an emergency meeting for tomorrow in Enugu to discuss the matter.

Okogie, speaking on the phone yesterday, said: “President Buhari should do something fast about it. If he fails to act fast, it may lead to a situation where the people will be forced to use everything they have to defend themselves.

“Do you expect the people of Enugu to fold their hands after the attack and wait for another attack? When this kind of thing begins to happen, you risk having civil war in the country.

“As a Fulani man, Buhari should talk to his people. The sheep understand the voice of the shepherd. It is important to know where the herdsmen are getting sophisticated weapons from.

“If you check it very well, you will find that they are now everywhere. Even in some places where there is no single grass, you still find them.

“This is not the kind of change we voted for. How long would we continue to have this kind of lawlessness in our hands?

The President of Aka Ikenga, Goddy Uwazurike, said: “The Federal Government’s nonchalant attitude to the issue aggravated it. Its silence spoke volume. It shows that something is wrong.

“I am surprised that the Department of State Security (DSS) is not taking proactive action. The Southeast is waiting for the Federal Government to do something about it.

“If they fail, we would have to defend ourselves. A man who has enemies around his house does not go to bed with his two eyes closed.”

Iwuanyanwu, in his reaction to the mayhem, said: “We are worried that this matter is going to create serious trouble in this country. And I want to tell you today that the greatest challenge to the peace and unity of this country is the activities of the herdsmen.”

He was shocked that no single arrest had been made in respect of the Nimbo attack.

“I am astonished how somebody can carry his cattle to a person’s farm and destroy his crops; not only that they have come to a point where they rape women—married women, old women.

“The incident in Enugu was pathetic. It was an invasion.

“No one has given the accurate number of persons that were killed, and I learnt that the perpetrators have all escaped.

“What bothers me is that for so many years, nobody has heard about this.

“Some years ago, one could hear incidents of cattle straying into a farm and maybe damaging some crops and this could be settled amicably. But today, the new group that come are armed with automatic weapons and they kill people with impunity.

“In this country, no one has the authority to carry automatic weapons but these people parade the country with such weapons.

“I am aware that the President has directed the security agencies to fish out these people. But it has gotten to a point where farmers in Igbo land and other parts of the country are afraid to go to the farm because there is no way you can get enough policemen to garrison every farmland against these herdsmen.

“The implication is that food shortage may hit the country.

“Another thing is that the possibility of collaboration between this group and Boko Haram cannot be ruled out and so the victims of the cattle rearers’ attack should be treated with similar attention like the victims of Boko Haram.

“So whatever support the government is given in the Northeast, they should give in the Southeast.

“All of us must raise our voice against this evil because it could be worse that Boko Haram.”

The renowned politician however appealed to Igbo youths not to take reprisal action, adding that such action will jeopardise the lives of the Igbo living in other parts of the country.

Bemoaning the predicament of Agatu people of Benue State, Comrade Aluh Moses Odeh, national leader All Middle Belt Forum, (AMBYF), condemned any attempt by security and government officials to present the attackers as foreigners, saying: “Our people have always been victims of these herdsmen and we would not take it anymore.

“We say no to a situation where some people will continue to destroy our farmlands and means of survival with impunity. If the government cannot defend us, we would defend ourselves.

“The argument that the perpetrators are foreigners is false. They are Fulani herdsmen who move their cows about. It is even an indictment on our security operatives for anybody to use that as a defence. It shows that our security operatives are not alive to their responsibilities.

“But the truth is that those guys are not foreigners and neither are they Boko Haram members.

“It is an insult on the sensibility of our people for government officials to be using all these as excuses for their shortcomings.

“We are supposed to be engaging in serious farming now but that is not possible. This would certainly have serious effect on availability of food for our people very soon.”

Mazi Uchenna Madu, a factional leader of Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) said: “Even some Igbo groups are busy counting  the casualties and  how the Federal Government and security agents abandoned our people.

“That era has gone, and until Ndigbo get actively involved in  protecting and defending Igbo people, interest and future, Hausa/Fulani herdsmen will continue to harass, intimidate, invade and cause more pogroms against our people. Ndigbo should hold their governors responsible for any invasion of our land.”

Chief Ladi Williams, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), told the Federal Government to adopt a hard line decision on the situation.

He said: “The government has to take a tough position on the development because it has the potential of destabilising the country. The people are seeing them not as miscreants but as a group that has stepped into the shoes of Boko Haram and it is only the Federal Government that can handle the situation before it threatens the unity of the country.

“The courts are not appropriate for this purpose. Court is time wasting. The president should summon the various service chiefs and nip the problem in the bud.

The youth wing of the Arewa Consultative Forum also condemned the activities of the herdsmen.

In a telephone chat with The Nation, the president of the group, Comrade Shetima Yerima said:: “We are opposed to it. We condemn it in all totality because we are not in a banana republic. Whatever is their grouse should be made public.”
