Young Italian skier Matilde Lorenzi has died of injuries sustained during training, the nation’s Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday.
The ministry said on X that 19-year-old Lorenzi tragically passed following an extremely serious accident during a training session.
The Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) said that Lorenzi fell and violently hit her face on an icy piste while training in Val Senales, in the northern region of Alto Adige on Monday.
Lorenzi was a member of the Italian army and the nation’s junior ski team.
Lorenzi won the Italian junior super-g title earlier this year, and came sixth in downhill and eighth in super-g at the 2023 junior world championships.

She has also competed in the second tier Europa Cup series where her best result was 11th in a super-g 10 months ago.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Matilde Lorenzi,’’ the world governing body FIS said, extending its deepest condolences.
“FIS joins FISI President Flavio Roda and the entire Italian winter sports community in mourning.’’
Italian Olympic downhill champion Sofia Goggia paid tribute in her Instagram story with a picture of Lorenzi and the caption A Prayer.
