  • Mechanic gets four years for necklace theft

    A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos yesterday sentenced an auto mechanic, Babatunde Adedeji, to four years imprisonment for damaging a woman’s car and stealing her gold necklace.

    Chief Magistrate Oluwatoyin Ojuromi convicted Adedeji, 29, on two counts of stealing and malicious damage.

    She sentenced Adedeji to two years each on each count without an option of fine.

    But the sentences will run concurrently, meaning Adedeji will spend only two years in jail.

    Chief Magistrate Ojuromi held: “You are hereby sentenced to two years imprisonment on each count. The counts will run concurrently, with no option of fine. ”

    She said the sentence will begin from June 22, 2017, the date the convict was arraigned.

    Ojuromi added: “This sentence will deter those with similar intentions. Cases of theft have become so rampant in the society.”

    She advised the convict to be of good behaviour and avoid committing crime in future.

    During Adedeji’s arraignment, prosecuting Sergeant Godwin Oriabure told the court that he committed the offences at about 4:15pm on June 20, 2017, on Anthony Oke bridge, near Oshodi, Lagos.

    The court heard that Adedeji broke into Mrs. Eva Christian’s Toyota Corolla car while she was in traffic and cut her gold necklace worth N200, 000 off her neck.

    Oriabure said in the process of trying to steal the necklace, Adedeji strangled the complainant and damaged her door glass valued at N40,000.

    The offences contravene sections 285 and 348 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

  • Mechanic in court for alleged theft

    A 27-year-old mechanic, Ibrahim Omotosho, yesterday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a tricycle worth N750,000.

    Omotosho, who lives at Abattoir, Fagba, Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy and stealing.

    Prosecuting Inspector Raji Akeem had told the court that Omotosho and others at large stole the tricycle overnight, from where it was kept at Toyin Street, Ikeja, last December 23.

    He said the tricycle belonged to Mr. Emeka Onyenjo.

    Akeem said the tricycle was recovered through a tracker and the accused was arrested.

    Although the accused pleaded not guilty, Section 287 prescribes three years jail term for offender.

    Magistrate Mrs. Jadesola Adeyemi-Ajayi granted the accused N200,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case continues on February 5.

  • Mechanic allegedly beats up bean cake seller

    A 26-year-old mechanic, Damilare Shopade, yesterday appeared at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos charged with injuring a trader for refusing to give him free bean cake (akara).

    Shopade, a resident of Ipaja, a Lagos suburb, is being tried for conspiracy, breach of the peace and assault.

    Prosecutor Godwin Awase said the accused committed the offences on October 8 at Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.

    He said the accused and others at large conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by assaulting the complainant, Mr. Samson Whenu.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Mr. F.F. George, granted him N50, 000 bail with two sureties.

    He said the sureties should be employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State government.

    Further hearing has been fixed for November 13.

     

  • Mechanic slumps to death

    An auto-mechanic identified as Clement, 35, was yesterday confirmed death at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, after he fainted while repairing a vehicle.

    The incident occurred around 9:30am, at plot 504, Fatai Lapade Street, Omole Phase II, Isheri.

    It was gathered that the deceased suddenly became unconscious and was rushed to the hospital for treatment, where he later died.

    Meanwhile, a four-year-old boy, Michael Onyelu was killed by a commercial bus driver along Ipakodo Road, Ogolonto in Ikorodu.

    It was gathered that the driver, Akande Akeem, who lives at 39, Ayegbajeje Street, Majidun, was repairing the vehicle marked BDG224XN, when it rolled and knocked the toddler.

    According to a source, the child was playing in front of their 3, Ogolonto Street residence when the incident occurred.

    He said it was possible the vehicle was not parked and did not have handbrake on, adding that the driver might have touched something on the engine that rolled the bus.

    Police spokesman, Chike Oti, a Superintendent (SP) confirmed the incidents, adding that the bodies have been deposited at Ikeja and Ikorodu General Hospitals morgues for autopsy.

    Oti said the driver was arrested by traffic policemen on duty at Ogolonto, who also recovered the bus to the station for Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) to check.

     

  • Mechanic arraigned for ‘sexually assaulting’ daughter

    An auto mechanic, Okoro Sunday, was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Special Court for Sexual Offences  allegedly sexually assaulting his 14-year-old daughter.

    Sunday, 40, was arraigned before Justice Sybil Nwaka on a three-count charge of indecent treatment of a child, sexual assault and assault.

    The prosecution led by Miss I. Solarin, told the court that Okoro committed the offence last March 27 at their 194, Agege Motor Road, Mushin, Lagos residence.

    According to the prosecutor, the defendant grabbed his daughter while she was  having her bath at home.

    Solarin said  on another occasion, the defendant crept into his daughter’s room while she was asleep and lifted up her dress.

    She said the child woke up, shouted at her father and raised the alarm that attracted her mother to the scene.

    The prosecutor said a fracas broke out when his wife, Ngozi,  confronted him.

    “In the ensuing fracas, he  assaulted her with a pestle which caused a deep gash on Ngozi’s forehead and left her with a broken left arm,” Solarin said.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Okoro’s trial begins tomorrow.

    Mechanic to receive six lashes for trespass

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Thursday ordered that a mechanic, Friday Monday, 25, convicted for criminal trespass into a clinic, be given six strokes of the cane.

    Monday of Angwan Shahu, Karmo, Abuja, was arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal trespass and attempt to commit offence, offences he admitted committing.

    The judge, Abubakar Sadiq, said the punishment would have been more severe if the convict had not pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Mrs Florence Auhioboh, had told the court that one Mike Bako of Hulumi village, Karmo, reported the matter at the Karmo Police Station, Abuja, on Jan. 30.

    Auhioboh said that on the same date, at about 4: p.m. the convict trespassed into the premises of Joy of The Lord Clinic and Maternity.

    She said that the convict entered the premises in an attempt to steal aluminum windows and was arrested.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 342 and 95 of the Penal Code.

    A Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court yesterday sentenced Sule Abdullahi, a mechanic of Gwari village, Abuja, to four weeks’ imprisonment for theft.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr. Teribo Jim, however, gave the convict an option of N5,000 fine and warned him to desist from crime.

    Jim ordered the convict to pay N30,000 as compensation to the complainant.

    The conviction was decided after Abdullahi pleaded guilty to stealing.

    The prosecutor, Mr. Gabriel Musa, told the court that Morris Gwale, of Mpape, Abuja, reported a case of theft of money at Mpape Police Station on November 20.

    He said the convict, a mechanic, stole N30,000 from the N76,000 the complainant had in his car, which he took to the convict for repair at his garage in Mpape.

    The prosecutor said the complainant forgot the money in the car and the convict, after repairing the car, stole N30,000 from it.

    He said during investigation, the convict denied, but later confessed.

    Musa told the court that the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.

    Abdullahi pleaded guilty. He begged for leniency.

    Mechanic, lover arrested for ‘killing’ baby

    The police in Ebonyi State have arrested a 36-year-old man, Ahmed Ajibore and his lover, aged 17, for allegedly strangling their eight-month-old son.

    The Nation learnt that the incident occurred at 4, Obubra Street, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

    Ajibore, from Osun State, is a tricycle mechanic at 72, Ogoja Road, Abakaliki, but lives at Jemeni Street, Abakaliki.

    A source alleged that he defiled the girl when she was preparing for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the act resulted in a pregnancy.

    The source added that to conceal the act, Ajibore took his lover to Onitsha in Anambra State where he negotiated with a baby factory operator.

    “The operator agreed to keep the girl in the factory and buy the baby for N400,000 after delivery.”

    The source said the girl escaped from the factory and returned to Abakaliki where she rejoined her aunt and her husband, who had been searching for her.

    The Nation gathered that on Tuesday, Ajibore met the girl at night and allegedly instructed her to kill their baby.

    He was alleged to have given the girl N3,000 and a tiny wire, which she used to strangle the baby boy.

    Narrating the incident to our reporter, the aunt, Mrs. Lovelyn Nwode, alleged that her niece was under a spell when she killed her baby.

    Police spokesperson Loveth Odah confirmed the incident. She said the suspects had been arrested and would be arraigned soon.

    Odah said the body had been exhumed, and autopsy would be carried out.

  • Mechanic arraigned for ‘stealing’ noodles

    A 20-year-old mechanic, Adeka Michael, has been arraigned at a Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court in Aso Pada, Nasarawa State, for allegedly trespassing and stealing one carton of Indomie noodles.

    Michael, a resident of Yelwa in Mararaba, is facing a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft.

    The prosecutor, Agabi Auta, told the court that the defendant, who pleaded not guilty, committed the offences on August 28 at Mararaba.

    He said the matter was reported by Saidu Kabiru of Kano Street, behind NEPA office, Mararaba, at ‘A’ Divisional Police Station, Mararaba.

    Auta alleged: “About 3:30 pm., the defendant trespassed into the complainant’s shop at Mararaba.

    “When the complainant stepped out, the accused stole a carton of Indomie noodles, valued at N3,500 and his phone of N12, 000.’’

    The prosecutor said the complainant caught the accused with the items.

    The offences contravene sections 287 and 348 of the Penal Code.

    The judge, Mr. Albert Maga, granted the defendant bail at N50,000 with one surety.

    He adjourned the matter till September 25 for hearing.

  • Court jails mechanic three months for stealing bag

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja at the weekend sentenced a motor mechanic, Murtale Useni, to three months’ imprisonment for stealing a bag.

    Useni, 20, who lives at Jayi Tipper Garage, Abuja, was arraigned on a one-count charge of stealing.

    The convict pleaded guilty.

    The judge, Abubakar Sadiq, gave the convict an option to pay N10,000 as fine.

    Sadiq said the punishment was less severe because he pleaded guilty, and saved the court the pain of prolonged prosecution.

    He warned him against taking to crimes again.

    The prosecutor, Florence Auhioboh, told the court that on August 18, Simon Shaapela, of Behind Water Board, Katampe Extension, reported the matter at Gwarinpa Police Station.

    She said on the same date, about 7 am., the convict went into the complainant’s house without his consent.

    Auhioboh said the convict broke into the complainant’s room and stole his bag, containing his ATM card, clothes, electrical cable and other items.

    She said when the convict saw the complainant coming, he jumped through the window and ran. But he was apprehended and handed over to the police.

    The prosecutor said during  interrogation, the convict admitted committing the offence.

    She said the offences contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.

    Following his plea, the prosecutor prayed the court to try him summarily under Section 347 of the Administration of Criminal Justices Act, 2015.
