  • 1,830 enjoy medical outreach in Sokoto

    No fewer than 1,830 people benefited from the medical outreach organised by the Army in Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

    The outreach, which held between July 14 and 15, is part of activities to commemorate the Nigeria Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2018.

    Beneficiaries were given polio vaccination, insecticide-treated mosquito net, routine check-up and treatment.

    The General Officer Commanding 8 Division, Maj.-Gen. Stevenson Olabanji, urged the beneficiaries to take advantage of the outreach.

    Olabanji, who was accompanied Commander 1 Brigade Sokoto, by Brig.-Gen. Kennedy Udeagbala, said the programme was part of the Army’s civil-military social responsibility of providing proper medical care for the people.

    Commander of the Military Hospital, Sokoto, Lt.-Col. Igwe Amara, was satisfied with the large turnout. He said it was a testimony of the people’s confidence in the Army as an institution.

    The District Head, Sarkin-Sudan Shehu Muhammad, praised the Army for the gesture, saying it would improve the people’s well being.

    Muhammad said the people were overjoyed with the programme and were grateful to the Army for the sacrifices to ensure peace and stability in the country.

  • Doctors storm Kebbi for medical outreach

    To ensure a healthy society with the prevailing health workers’ strike, about 100 doctors have arrived Kebbi State for medical out reach.

    The state goverment has therefore, advised the public to avail themselves of the opportunity of the free medical outreach at Kebbi Medical Center  Kalgo. The free medical outreach is being provided by a team of doctors drawn from Moses Lake in United States and Pro-Health International based in Nigeria.

    The team comprised gynecologist, surgeons, family health experts, pediatricians dentists, anesthetists, nurses and pharmacies.

    Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, while speaking with newsmen at the hospital, advised people to afford themselves the opportunity provided by the outreach to seek treatment and  consultancy.

    Director, Medical Services, Ministry of Health, Dr. Aminu Bunza, who is also the Chairman clinical committee,   said: “We are expecting more patients this time around due to the JOHESU strikes across the country and increase in public awareness “

    The team comprised Kebbi State Medical workers, medical personnel and doctors from UDUTH Sokoto, University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan and Pro health International. There are also student volunteers from Kebbi State School of Nursing and School of Health Technology and members of the Moses Lake Medical team from the United States. The team will be working together while building the capacity of medical workers in a teaching environment.

    Over 50,000 people have benefited from the three previous outreaches, especially with regards to surgeries across specialities. “This time we are targeting over 35000 thousand patients of different illnesses to be treated.  All expenses for all patients are free, including free feeding. The outreach is expected to last for three weeks,”he said.

    Meanwhile, Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Umar Kambaza has explained the reason why the Kebbi State embarked on the free medical out reach for the 4th time was to allow common man access specialised health care services, adding that not only Kebbi people benefitted, but other people from various states came to benefit from the outreach.

    Umahi flags off medical outreach

    Hundreds of people in Ivo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State have been treated free of charge during the maiden edition of the Caring Heart Foundation Medical outreach.

    Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi flagged off the outreach, which was sponsored by a member of the House of Representatives (Onicha/Ivo/Ohaozara Federal Constituency) Linus Okorie.

    The flag-off at the Akaeze Development Centre Headquarters, Ugwuagba was attended by the state commissioner for Health, Dr Umezurike, Commissioner for Environment, Chief Din Njoku and his counterpart for Economic Empowerment, Uchenna Orji.

    Others were the Deputy Chief of Staff Prof Okpara, Ivo council chairman, Senior Advisers, traditional rulers, and town union presidents, among others.

    Governor Umahi who was represented by his deputy, Kelechi Igwe commended Okorie for his people-oriented representation at the National Assembly.

    He said such health outreaches will compliments the efforts of the state government in the health sector.

    He highlighted some of the programes initiated by his administration highlight like the construction of a modern virology centre in the state, fight against female genital mutilation and reconstruction of general hospitals in the state.

    Mr Okorie in his speech said the outreach is his own little way of giving back to his constituents who have shown him so much live by voting him into the House of Representatives two times.

    He said the outreach will be carried out in the three local government areas of the Constituency in the coming months to improve their health standards.

    Over 150 under five children (with one critically sick baby rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki with the ambulance), 60 pregnant women (with six identified as very high risk requiring special attention) and 239 older children and adults ( with one prolapse case) were treated.

  • Emerhor marks diamond jubilee with medical outreach

    Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, will organise a medical outreach and other charity activities to mark his 60th birthday.

    A statement yesterday by his media aide, Aghogho Orotomah, said the celebration will run from Thursday till Sunday, at his country home in Ewreni, Ughelli South Local Government Area.

    According to the statement, the business tycoon chose to give back to the society by providing free health services, empowerment and entertainment to his people.

    The statement reads: “Olorogun Emerhor is, however, celebrating this Diamond Jubilee by giving back to the community through a medical outreach, charity football match, cultural dance competition and an empowerment programme.

    “These events will start on Thursday and end on Sunday at his Evwreni country home.

    “On Saturday, the actual birthday, Emerhor will host cultural dances and shows, and an open house where family, friends, party faithful and well wishers are expected through an open invitation.”

    ‘Medical outreach’ Armed Forces’ responsibility – Enenche

    The Defence Headquarters on Sunday described the Armed Forces’ medical outreach as part of the Forces’ constitutional responsibility of securing lives and property of Nigerians.

    Maj Gen. John Enenche, the Director Defence Information, said in a statement issued in Maiduguri that there were no sinister motive behind the Armed Forces medical outreach exercise.

    Enenche dismissed as misrepresentation and smear campaign against the military regarding the Monkey Pox disease outbreak in parts of the country.

    He said that the Armed Forces had been conducting medical outreach during operations and routine training exercises such as the war against the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East and Egwu Eke II in the South-East.

    “Categorically, the practice of reaching out to the general public medically is akin to the key task of securing the lives and property of Nigerians; therefore, it can never be done with ulterior motives.

    “Thus, Nigerians should be assured that the Armed Forces will continue to carry out its all-encompassing constitutional responsibility of “National Security,” health security inclusive.

    “In this regard, quick impact medical outreaches were usually conducted during deliberate operations such as the war against insurgency and terrorism in the North-East and routine training exercise such as Egwu Eke II in the South-East”.

    Enenche added that the Nigerian Armed Forces had been in the global best military practice and had impacted positively on the lives of Nigerians through the medical outreaches.

    He noted that the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force had carried out various medical outreaches including to victims of natural disasters in the six geo-political zones in the country in the past.

    The director stressed that the exercises were conducted without any negative observation or insinuations.

    “In specific terms, the campaign of calumny against the Nigerian Army regarding the outbreak of Monkey Pox disease should be disregarded.

    “It is the machination of the usual mischievous and disgruntled elements in the business of blackmailing the Military for their myopic selfish interests”.

    The director assured members of the public of the Defence Headquarters’ commitment to genuine and sincere medical outreaches by the Armed Forces in view of their positive impact on the people.

    Python Dance: Army launches medical outreach

    The Nigerian Army has launched a free medical outreach in Ovim, Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia, as an integral part of the ongoing Python Dance II exercise in the South-East of the country.

    A statement signed by the Deputy Director of Public Relations, 82 Division, Col. Sagir Musa, and made available to newsmen in Enugu, described the programme as a success.

    Musa said that the programme followed a directive by the Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen. Tukur Buratai.

    He said that the former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika and other dignitaries were present at the event.

    “One interesting aspect of the exercise is the generous donations of rice, dental and optometry services, malaria and de-worming tablets, eye glasses, treated mosquito nets to the locals, among others.

    “In addition to the de-worming tablets, school children were given packets of biscuits, chewing gum and chocolates,” Musa said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ihejirika is from Ovim.

    Meanwhile, Musa said that various formations and corps commanders of the Nigerian Army training institutions had been visiting areas covered by the Python Dance II.

    He said that the visits, as directed by Buratai, were designed for interaction with the troops and assess the success of the ongoing exercise.

    He said that the commanders were conducted round some field locations and check-points along Enugu-Nsukka and Enugu-Abakaliki axis.

    “The Commander of Nigerian Army College of Logistics, Maj.-Gen. RC Duru, visited Sector 2 Operational Headquarters, where he was briefed on the exercise.

    “The commander was later conducted round the hitherto volatile areas of Ohaji Egbema in Imo State.

    “So far, the entire South-East has been peaceful and people are seamlessly carrying out their normal businesses,” Musa said.

  • 1,097 persons enjoy medical outreach in Sokoto

    One thousand and ninety-seven patients have so far been treated for various eye ailments in the eight-day medical outreach initiated by Senator Aliyu Wamakko (APC-Sokoto). The outreach ends today.

    The programme, which started last Tuesday, targeted 1,000 patients from the Northern Senatorial Zone which Wamakko represents.

    A statement by his media aide Bashir Rabe Mani said the programme started in Balle, headquarters of Gudu Local Government Area, on August 1 and has been done in six other councils – Gudu, Tangaza, Binji, Wamakko, Silame and Kware.

    It will rounded off today at the Palace of the Chiroman Sokoto, in Sokoto North.

    Patients were treated for refractive errors, conjunctivitis and uveitis.

    Senator Wamakko, who spoke through his Director of Administration, Al-Mustapha Abubakar, said the outreach is aimed at alleviating the suffering of his constituents. He promised to sustain the gesture.

  • 4, 000 people benefit from free medical outreach in Plateau

    No fewer than 4, 000 people have benefited from a three-day free medical outreach organised by Rep. Timothy Golu (PDP Plateau) for people in Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau.

    Dr Sabo Emmanuel, Team leader of the outreach, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Pankshin at the end of the programme.

    Emmanuel said that the programme was organised in conjunction with an NGO, Project Zero, and the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).

    He said that no fewer than 1, 020 people with eye problems were treated with over 500 free glasses given out free to those with serious cases.

    “A total of 116 surgeries of different types including eyes, dental, Hernia, Apendix, Lipoma, Ganglion, Hydrocele, among others were done.

    “The surgeries were done on both adults and children who came from various communities within  Pankshin/Kanam/Kanke Constituency and they were given free drugs,” he said.

    The team leader also said that over 100 medical personnel with different specialties- surgeons, ophthalmologists, pharmacists, nurses and family physicians- were on ground for the programme.

    He described the programme as “very successful” and “encouraging” given the response of people from the constituency.

    “We are surprise by the influx of patients, especially those who came, even before and after Sunday service,” he said.

    According to him, HIV and Hepatitis screenings were carried out with counsellors on ground who assisted in counselling the patients on what to do.

    In his remarks, Golu expressed happiness over the success of the programme, which he said had achieved its aimed of touching lives of the masses in his constituency.

    “This is just the beginning as I will replicate same programme at Kanke and Kanam Local Government Area very soon till my people are properly catered for health wise, ” he said.

    Golu said that preparations were on for the drilling of boreholes in various communities in the constituency to alleviate the problem of water scarcity being experienced by the people.

    Commissioner for Health Dr Kamshak Kuden had on Friday, while flagging off the programme, commended Golu for the gesture and called on other elected office holders to take a cue from him.

    Kuden said that the state government intended to commence similar free medical outreach in some local government areas in the state to enhance the wellbeing of the people.

    The Navy has said it remains committed to its periodic Medical Rhapsody to show its care for Nigerians as well as sustain a mutual relationship with civilians.

    Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta, Commodore Joseph Dzunve, spoke yesterday at a Navy Medical Rhapsody outreach in Ogunu, Warri South Local Government of Delta State.

    The commander said the gesture would create a rapport between the Navy and community leaders.

  • 14,000 IDPs to benefit from medical outreach

    The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Primary Health Care Development Board (PHCDB) has said that about 14,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in seven camps in the territory would benefit from the free medical outreach being organised by the board.

    The Executive Secretary of PHCDB, Dr Rilwanu Muhammad, made this known in during the inauguration of the April 2015 National Immunisation-plus Days organised to mark the Africa Vaccination Week (AVW) and the World Malaria Day.

    Mohammed said the Africa Vaccination Week, whose theme was “Vaccination, a Gift of Life”, had been scheduled for between April 24 and 30, saying the main goal of the event was to help in strengthening immunisation systems through advocacy, education and outreach services.

    He said the event will commemorate the week and seven of the camps located in three area councils which are Abaji, Kuje, and Bwari had been selected to have health camps for the duration of the Africa Vaccination Week.

    “Arrangement to ensure the availability of the relevant services and supplies to meet the demand created for the interventions have been made. This is to ensure that the health care needs of this group are met,” he said.

    He, therefore, urged the displaced persons, especially women and children, to take advantage of the opportunity offered by the event to access medical care.

    Speaking during the inauguration, the Executive Secretary of National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) Dr Ado Mohammed, explained

    that Nigeria had not recorded any new case of the polio virus in the past nine months.

    Mohammed, who was represented by the Advocacy and Communication Officer of the agency, Dr Adamu Nuhu, also said that it was necessary to reach out to the IDPs through advocacy, adding that the exercise will increase access to the under-served population that are hard to reach and the mobile population in the country.

    Also speaking on the World Malaria Day, Mohammed said malaria had devastated the people’s health and livelihood, but that the agency has made huge gains in the fight against the disease.

    He said new drugs had been made available for the treatment of the disease, promising that the vaccine against malaria will soon be made available.
