  • Why we stormed Melaye’s house – Police

The police said on Monday night that the siege on Senator Dino Melaye’s residence was necessitated by his involvement in a case of unlawful possession of prohibited firearms.

Speaking with The Nation, the Force Deputy Spokesman, Adeniran Aremu, said: “Our action was prompted by the fact that he was invited in a case of unlawful possession of firearms and other crimes.

“The police had invited him on more than two or three occasions but he failed to honour the invitations. That is why we are there right now.

“You know when a case is in court, there is no law that stops you from further questioning if you need to answer question on the suspects.

“There is no law that stops the police from further inviting him or asking question about the case.”

  • Armed policemen storm Melaye’s Abuja house

Armed policemen on Monday stormed the Abuja home of embattled Senator Dino Melaye to arrest him.

The Kogi West senator also had a brush with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) operatives at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport where he was stopped from leaving the country.

Our reporter, who visited Melaye’s 11 Sangha Street, Maitama, Abuja, residence, witnessed a horde of armed police personnel milling around his house.

Apart from the presence of the police in their numbers, an unmarked police pick up van was also used to block the street near Melaye’s residence.

All vehicular movement in and around the house was blocked by police forcing motorists to beat a retreat.

The policemen were led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) who refused to disclose his name.

Asked why the policemen besieged Melaye’s house, the ACP declined comment and directed journalists to refer their enquiry to the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood.

  • Attack on Melaye: Court issues Bench warrant against accused

A Kogi High Court on Friday issued a bench warrant against one Ade Obege, charged with four others for alleged assassination attempt on Sen. Dino Melaye on April, 2017.

Justice Fola Ajayi, issued the bench warrant following Obege’s absence at the trial.

Fola also ordered that summons be served on his sureties.

There was no cogent reason for Obege’s absence on Friday.

The prosecuting counsel, Lough Simon, was also not in court.

Samuel Ikutanwa, who held the brief of Simon, told the court that the prosecutor could not attend the sitting because of the death of his father.

Ikutanwa said the development had already been communicated to the parties, adding that he was not availed with the details of proceedings on the matter.

Obege’s Counsel, Mr Ayo Jonathan, told the court that his client was last seen on March 22, when he came to court for his trial.

Jonathan told the court that the wife of the accused said she had not seen her husband since March 22, when he left Okene for Lokoja, saying that he wanted to conclude that Obege was missing.

Reacting to the submission of the counsel, Ikutanwa prayed the court to issue a bench warrant against the second accused since there was no cogent reason for not being in court.

Ajayi, in his ruling, issued a bench warrant against Obege, and ordered that his sureties be summoned to court.

The court said that the suit could not go on due to the absence of the second accused and the prosecutor.

The judge, therefore, adjourned the case till May 14 and May 15 for definite hearing.

NAN recalls that the Administrator of Ijumu Local Government Council, Alhaji Taofiq Isa and four others including Obege, were arraigned before late Justice Aromeh Akogu for alleged attempt to assassinate Melaye in April 2017.

Unidentified gunmen allegedly attacked the lawmaker’s residence in Ayetoro-Gbede, Ijumu Local Government, fired several shots into the compound and destroyed property. No life was lost in the attack.

  • Melaye, accusers get May 10 court date

•How they were picked up, by Force spokesman

THE Police said yesterday that Senator Dino Melaye and the four suspects rearrested for alleged conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms will be arraigned at the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi on May 10.

The Force said the suspects would be arraigned in court for prosecution after completion of investigation.

Their escape led the Inspector General (IG), Ibrahim Idris, to remove the state Police Commissioner and also deploy personnel from special unit of the Force to investigate their escape.

Explaining  how the suspects were rearrested, the Force spokesman, ACP Jimoh Moshood, in a statement yesterday, said the principal suspects, Kabiru Saidu (a.k.a Osama) was rearrested in Bauchi State and Nuhu Salisu (a.k.a Small) was rearrested in Ganaja Village, Lokoja.

Other suspects, who also escaped and others who facilitated their escape have also been arrested by personnel of the Force, who were deployed to the state.

Moshood said: “As a result of intense raids, cordon and search operations carried out by the police team in some identified criminal hideouts and black spots in some locations in Kogi State and other states and working on active intelligence gathered on the whereabouts of the fleeing suspects, they were rearrested.

“Kabiru Saidu (a.k.a Osama) from Dekina LGA but based in Anyagba (leader of the gang) was rearrested in Tafa Balewa Local Government Area in Bauchi State and Nuhu Salisu a.k.a Small (a member of the gang) was rearrested in Ganaja Village, Lokoja State.”

Moshood added that the suspects who played various criminal roles in the escape of the six suspects and their suspected criminal accomplices have also been arrested and will be prosecuted along with the principal suspects in court.

He said: “Musa Mohammed (a.k.a Iko) and Emmanuel Audu are also escapees, who were rearrested for criminal conspiracy and armed robbery.”

Highlighting the roles played by some of the suspects, Moshood said: “John Beneche carried four of the escaped suspects: Kabiru Saidu (a.k.a Osama), Nuhu Salisu (a.k.a Small), Musa Mohammed (a.k.a Iko) and Emmanuel Audu after their escape to their criminal hideout at Ganaja Village, Lokoja.”

The Force spokesman said during police trail on the fleeing suspects, Atowoju was arrested in the process of relocating four of the escaped suspects: Saidu, Salisu, Mohammed and Audu from their criminal hideout at Ganaja Village, Lokoja to another location to escape police re-arrest.

“Danjuma Yunusa a.k.a O2 accompanied the principal suspect, Kabiru Saidu (a.k.a Osama) to the house of one Egga Ochai by Waterside, Lokoja.

He said: “Egga Ochai harboured Kabiru Saidu (a.k.a Osama) in his house for two days and thereafter went to the village of the principal suspect in Dekina Local Government and brought one Abbas Haruna (his Mallam) to Lokoja.

“Abbas Haruna is the Mallam of Kabiru Saidu (a.k.a Osama). He also orchestrated his movement from Lokoja to his home town at Tafa Balewa Local Government Area in Bauchi State, where both of them were arrested.

“Gloria Audu is the sister to Emmanuel Audu. She harboured him for some days to enable him escape police arrest.”

Moshood warned that the police would not relent in its efforts to check activities of unscrupulous politicians, adding that they must play the game according to the rules.

He hailed members of the public for giving the police timely information that aided the re-arrest of the suspects.

The spokesman said the force’s fight against crimes and criminality remained unequivocal and unwavering.

Seidu had confessed that Melaye handed over to him a bag containing one AK47 rifle, two Pump Action guns and N430,000.00 to share with his boys.

  • Police, Gov Bello colluding to kill me, Melaye cries out

Embattled Senator Dino Melaye has accused police authorities of connivance with Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to kill him by all means.

The Police, he alleged, has “openly taken side in the Kogi State political crisis” to nail him at all costs.

Melaye (APC, Kogi West) also denied fleeing the country as alleged by police authorities, which declared him wanted last week.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja, Melaye said: “For the records, I did not flee Nigeria and have no reason to flee my country leaving behind my family.”

He also stated he was yet to receive any court summon to appear before Police, alleging the parade of crime suspects in Lokoja by the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, was stage-managed.

The Senate further alleged the suspect was tutored to implicate him as “a continuation and expansion of the Police attempt to have me arrested at all cost and ultimately kill me.”

He described the travel of the Force spokesman to Lokoja to parade suspects as “bizarre and unprecedented”, accusing him of being there to “act a script written by Governor Bello.”

According to the Senator: “It is worrisome the Police Headquarters has got itself entangled in the Kogi political crisis and has taken side.”

In a related development, a group, Mega Imolede Movement in Kogi West, alleged there were also plans to blackmail the Senator.

Its coordinator, Comrade Oluade Bright, also said the jail break on the eve of appearance of suspects in court as “a bad set up.”

The group wondered how masses will be assured of protection if a serving senator and the son of a former governor could be so easily set up.

  • Melaye: As the axe falls on CP…

FOR Ali Janga, outgoing Commissioner of Police (CP) in Kogi State, the truth dawned like the knell of eternal damnation; chaos permeated his peace immediately Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris, announced his removal as Kogi CP.

Like a poisonous tide unleashed like a dam, calm withdrew from Janga’s world following the escape from police custody, of six suspects, including two principal suspects, Kabiru Saidu aka Osama and Nuhu Salisu aka Small, on his watch.

While he embarked on a race against time to re-arrest the suspects and save his job, Janga had to contend with the fear of reprimand by higher police authorities.

He probably envisaged his fate prior to its dawn. Soon after the suspects made a miraculous escape from his custody, Janga was given the boot by IGP Idris.

Even before his removal, the deposed CP was thrown in a state of flux. Under immense pressure, he embarked on a desperate quest to apprehend the suspects but his removal from office threw a spanner in his works and cast a dark pall on his future as a senior police officer.

However, in a remarkable twist to the incident, the police has announced the re-arrest of three out of the six suspects involved in the arms case against Senator Dino Melaye.

“Yes, it is confirmed, but note that I am no longer the CP, I have been removed, so next time talk to the new CP, ” said Janga, the outgoing police commissioner of Kogi.

The suspects were reportedly re-arrested yesterday at an undisclosed location. Two of them allegedly sustained gunshot wounds while they attempted to escape from the police.

They are receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, according to police sources.

It would be recalled that Police IG Idris, announced Janga’s removal, soon after the suspects were declared missing. While being paraded by the police, Saidu and Salisu, confessed   that Senator Dino Melaye and Alhaji Mohammed Audu were some of their patrons.

The suspects’ revelations established them as high profile detainees; given the magnitude of their disclosure, the police declared them crucial to their case against the embattled senator. Their alleged escape was therefore, a rude shock to the country and a great embarrassment to police authorities.

The Police in Lokoja on Wednesday, alleged that Saidu and Salisu, who named Melaye as their supplier of guns had escaped from custody.

Addressing pressmen at the state command headquarters, Lokoja, CP Janga said that Saidu alias Osama and Nuhu Salisu alias Small, escaped at about 3:21 a.m. at the A Police Division in Lokoja, where they were being kept in lawful custody.

According to him, four other suspects escaped along with Saidu and Salisu, bringing the total number of fleeing suspects to six.

He said both Saidu and Salisu escaped on Wednesday when they were supposed to be arraigned before a Federal High Court alongside Melaye and Mohammed Audu, who was also named by the suspects as their sponsor.

Janga identified Aliyu Isa, Adams Suleiman, Emmanuel Audu and Musa Mohammed as four other suspects that escaped from custody.

He said that 13 policemen, comprising five operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and eight conventional policemen on duty when the incident happened have been detained for interrogation.

‘The 13 police officers who were on duty when the incident occurred were defaulted and detained for interrogation,” he said.

Corroborating Janag, the police in a statement signed by ACP Jimoh Moshood, the Force Public Relations Officer, Force headquarters, on Wednesday, said IGP Idris was dissatisfied with the circumstances surrounding the escape of the six suspects, including the two principal suspects – Kabiru Saidu, and Nuhu Salisu  – who indicted Senator Melaye and Mohammed Audu in a case of conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearm, already filed at the Federal High Court, Lokoja which came up in court today (Wednesday).

Incidentally, Moshood was also in the mix when the incident that led to Janga’s exit as Kogi CP, began to unfold.  Moshood reportedly led the police’s PR team to Lokoja penultimate week, to parade Saidu and Salisu, before the press.

During the parade, the two principal suspects narrated how they got introduced to Melaye, where they first met and how munitions and cash were given to them.

A visibly mortified police IG, Idris, moved swiftly to announce Janga’s removal from his privileged position, hours after the news broke of the escape of the six suspects.

The IGP ordered the Esa Sunday Ogbu, Commissioner of Police, Federal Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja to take over as the new Kogi State Commissioner of Police (CP).

He also ordered the transfer of 13 other police officers out of the state; the officers have been detained and are being investigated for their roles in the purported escape.

However, in a dramatic turn, Melaye, alleged sponsor of the suspects, pointed towards Lugard House, that is, Kogi Government House, where Governor Yaya Bello presides, as the abode of the mastermind of his travails.

Melaye made the allegation soon after the suspects confessed that he supplied them with guns and money.

In a state that is steadily living up to the proverbial ‘one week-one trouble’ sobriquet that is being ascribed to it, Melaye’s claims have been generating unprecedented buzz within political and social circuits.

It would be recalled that the embattled lawmaker had alerted via the social media, of an alleged plot by the Kogi State government to frame him, using the police. It wasn’t surprising therefore, that he vehemently denied the allegations made against him.

Reacting to the incident, Ayodele Olukore Okono, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi urged the police authorities to curtail the situation.

“We are looking towards the IG to do something fast, because we are no longer safe in Kogi. If it were a DPO that was in charge here, the case will be brought before the Commissioner of Police, but for criminals that were paraded, some of who accused Senator Dino Melaye of arming them and of being their sponsor, to now escape from custody, a lot needs to be answered. It is not only to remove the CP, but for thorough investigation to be carried out,” he said.

Okono added that: “These criminals cannot be allowed out there in the open, because a lot is at stake here. We are worried as we no longer feel safe. The authorities should please get to the root of all that is happening here.

“A whole senator was openly accused of criminal association, and suddenly the principal suspects disappear into thin air. No. Something urgent must be done. The state is steadily sliding into anarchy, and a halt must be put to the trend.”

Offering an alternative perspective to the episode, Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Bode Ogunmola, stated that, “When you tell one lie, you need to continue to tell more lies to cover the previous once.

“Every reasonable human being knows that police cannot come out clean on this matter. So, as a party, we are not surprised that they are now blowing hot and cold. Police can’t come out clean on the escaped suspect because from what is in public domain, the cell was not broken into. This means that someone opened the gates for them to  walk out. Conclusively, the police may need to tell the world the truth as their defense so far cannot convince anybody.”

  • Melaye: I’ve not been served with criminal charge

    •Senate probes alleged police harassment

THE counsel for Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West), Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), said yesterday his client was yet to be served with a criminal charge filed against him by the police.

He alleged that the police was planning to declare the senator wanted when the charge was already before a court.

Ozekhome spoke while asking Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court in Lagos to excuse him.

The Senior Advocate was before the judge for the hearing of a suit by First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan seeking to unfreeze her accounts with $15.5 million.

Explaining why he needed to leave halfway into the proceedings, Ozekhome said he had a flight to catch to Abuja en route Lokoja, Kogi State capital, where he was going to defend Melaye.

“I have a flight to catch to travel from Abuja to Lokoja to handle Senator Dino Melaye’s case in which he has been charged to court.

“The summons has not been served on him, but the police are saying they want to declare him wanted, even when the matter is already before a judge.

“A person has been charged to court. They have not yet served the accused person. But the police are holding a press conference to declare that person wanted for not reporting to court when the court has assumed jurisdiction over that matter. I want to go and face that one squarely tomorrow (today),” he said.

The police said on Saturday it might declare Melaye and Alhaji Mohammed Audu, wanted if they refuse to comply with the court’s order.

Melaye and Audu are expected to appear before the Federal High Court, Lokoja, today to answer to criminal charges against them.

But, the Senate yesterday mandated it’s joint committee on Judiciary and Legal Matters and Police Affairs to investigate alleged  harassment of Melaye.

The upper chamber asked the joint committee to report back its findings to the Senate plenary within 48 hours.

The resolution followed a point of order raised by Senator Isah Hamman Misau on the issue.

Misau claimed that the Police was biased in its invitation of Melaye to appear before the Kogi State Police Command in Lokoja, the state capital.

After the debate of the point of order, Senate President Bukola Saraki asked the committee to investigate the matter and report back to Senate in plenary.

  • I have not been served with criminal charge – Melaye

Counsel for Senator Dino Melaye, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), said on Tuesday his client was yet to be served with a criminal charge filed by the police.

He alleged that the police was planning to declare the senator wanted when the charge was already before a court.

Ozekhome spoke while asking Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court in Lagos to excuse him.

The Senior Advocate was before the judge for the hearing of a suit filed by First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan who is seeking to unfreeze her accounts with $15.5million.

Ozekhome is representing two of the companies in whose Skye Bank Plc accounts the money is domiciled.

Explaining why he needed to leave halfway into the proceedings, Ozekhome said he had a flight to catch to Abuja enroute Lokoja, Kogi State capital, where he was going to defend Melaye.

“I have to catch a flight from Abuja to Lokoja to handle Senator Dino Melaye’s case in which he has been charged to court.

“The summons has not been served on him, but the police want to declare him wanted even when the matter is already before a judex.

“A person has been charged to court. The police has not yet served the accused person. But the Police is holding a press conference to declare that person wanted for not reporting to court when the court has assumed jurisdiction over that matter. I want to go and face that one squarely tomorrow (today),” he said.

The police said on Saturday it may declare Melaye, who represents Kogi West, and Alhaji Mohammed Audu, wanted if they refuse to comply with the court’s order.

Melaye and Audu are expected to appear before the Federal High Court, Lokoja, on Wednesday, to answer to criminal charges against them.

  • Melaye: I’m not afraid of being investigated

•‘My safety not guaranteed in Kogi’

Embattled Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West) has said he is not afraid of being investigated by the police or any other security agency.

He, however, alleged plots by the Kogi State Police Command to frame him on trump up charges, arrest, detain and ensure that he is murdered in detention.

A march 20 five-page letter to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), signed by his lawyer, Rickey Tarfa (SAN), wants the police high command to set up a neutral investigation team, led by trusted officers in Abuja, to investigate the issues for which he was being invited to Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

The letter said they were afraid for Melaye’s safety in Kogi, noting that his presence may also lead to a breakdown of law and order.

The police threatened to declare Meleye wanted if he fails to appear before a Federal High Court in Lokoja, on March 28, to answer criminal charges against him.

He drew the attention of the IGP to an alleged attempt to abduct him on March 1 and his several reports of attempts on his life.

The letter reads: “Our client told us that the intention was to abduct him and take him to Kogi State, where he would be at the mercy of the governor, and where plans had been perfected and were being implemented to frame him on spurious charges, arrest and detain him, and then murder him in prison while he is awaiting trial.

“It is noteworthy that our client has severally stated in the media that he is aware of this nefarious plan and the involvement of the Kogi State Police Command in implementing same. The sheer number of armed policemen and security personnel deployed from Kogi State on March 1, to abduct our client from the FCT High Court premises, gives credence to his fears.

“Sir, as the chief law enforcement officer of the country, we urge you to intervene in this circumstance. It is obvious there is no plausible reason for our client to believe that his personal safety is guaranteed in the hands of the police in Kogi.

“After the court hearing of March 1, and the attempted kidnap, the police exchanged correspondences with the Senate leadership over an invitation to our client. It is evident from the letters, dated March 8, that our client’s presence in Kogi State will put him in danger. It may also lead to a breakdown of law and order, going by the governor’s antecedents.

“The letter, therefore, advises that the issues for which the invitation was sent be investigated in Abuja. We believe this would be the reasonable option in the circumstance, and suggest that a neutral team be set up by your office to investigate the issues.

“Our client is not averse to being investigated for any charges brought against him. The fact that our client is accused of being a gun runner is extremely suspicious and with due respect, smacks of a set up.”

“Sir, we urge for your urgent intervention in this matter. As we have said, our client, convinced of his innocence, is ready to submit himself for investigation and to answer any charge against his person, but by police officers whose neutrality he is confident of.

“Our client will not and cannot run from justice, but balks at being delivered directly into the hands of people who have made public threats against his person.”

  • Melaye travels abroad, alleges threat to life in Kogi

•Senator petitions IG, UN, others •’I’m willing to be quizzed in Abuja’

EMBATTLED Chairman of Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senator Dino Melaye yesterday raised the alarm over alleged threat to his life.

Melaye, who made the allegation through his lawyers, Messrs Ricky Tarfa & Co, claimed that he is abroad “on an official trip”.

His lawyer said the plot was brought to Melaye’s notice abroad and he :immediately informed us yesterday that the plans to set him up and frame him on spurious gun-running charges have been perfected and that some suspects would be paraded as having named him as their sponsor yesterday”.

He alleged that a plot has been hatched to “murder him extra-judicially” by his “political enemies” in Kogi State in collusion with men of the state police command.

The Kogi West senator made the allegation in separate petitions to the United Nations (UN) Resident Representative, members of the diplomatic corps – including the Ambassadors of the United States, Germany, Canada and the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom.

Others he sent the petition to include Amnesty International, Transparency International and the Human Rights Watch.

He also forwarded the petition to Inspector General (IG) Ibrahim Idris.

He urged the police boss to raise a neutral police team to investigate the allegations of “gun running” levelled against him by the Kogi State Police Command and the Kogi State Government

He sought for the intervention of the IG, members of the international community and human rights bodies to save him from what he described as “willful, intentional harassment, oppression, political victimisation and threat to life”.

Melaye prayed the UN and other envoys in Nigeria to help guarantee his fundamental human rights to liberty and safety from fear and harm to his person as well as threats to terminate his life allegedly by agents of the Kogi State Government.

Part of the petition reads: “As things stand, I live each day in constant and reasonable fear for my life, looking over my shoulders and being harassed by the named politicians. The police are a willing tool in the hands of these politicians.”

Melaye, who endorsed one of the petitions, said: “I am a law-abiding citizen, who voluntarily submitted myself before the FCT High Court to answer to charges, which I know are unsustainable.

“However, the situation I am in right now gives me reason to believe that the law enforcement agencies, particularly the police, are in cohorts with my political enemies and can even go to the extent of terminating my life extra-judicially.

“I, therefore, seek your intervention in the circumstances to ensure that my fundamental human rights, which both Nigeria and your countries are party to, are guaranteed and my life protected.”

Tarfa, SAN, in another petition to the IGP on behalf of Melaye, said: “The fact that our client is now the one alleged to be a gun runner by the police in Kogi State is, therefore, extremely suspicious and with all due respect smacks of a set up.

“Our client who is abroad on an official trip had it brought to his notice and immediately informed us yesterday that the plans to set him up and frame him on spurious gun-running charges have been perfected and that some suspects would be paraded as having named him as their sponsor yesterday…”

Melaye, in his “save my soul letter” to the UN and members of the diplomatic corps in Nigeria, traced his present ordeal to his vocal stance in the Senate.
