Serena targets Australian Open title defence

Former world number one and new mum Serena Williams is targeting a return to Melbourne Park next year to defend her Australian Open title, tournament director Craig Tiley said on Tuesday.

Williams, who won her 23rd Grand Slam title when pregnant at the 2017 tournament in January, gave birth to daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. on Sept. 1.

She has just three months to get fit if she is to defend her title.

“Serena will be back,” Tiley told reporters in Melbourne.

“She wants to come back in 2018 and defend her title and she’s in training now.

“There are several months to go and obviously it will be up to her as to where she is with her fitness.”

The 36-year-old would be competing for a tournament record A$4 million ($3.11 million) winner’s purse in 2018, with total prize money hiked 10 per cent to A$55 million.

  • Police arrest man 47 years after committing crime

Police on Thursday arrested a man 47 years after he abducted and murdered a toddler from an Australian beach.

The 63-year-old man, is accused of abducting and killing a three-year-old Cheryl Grimmer, whose disappearance Brad Ainsworth, New South Wales police detective, told reporters that the man, who was once considered as a person of interest, was arrested in Melbourne.

From a beach in the town of Wollongong, south of Sydney, puzzled officials for decades.

“I’m not going to get into the specifics of the actual detail of the offences, but I can say that they’re quite horrific and they’ll be unfolding in court,” Ainsworth said.

Grimmer vanished from a changing area at Fairy Meadow Beach, where she had spent the morning with her mother and three brothers.

She was never seen again and her body was never found.

Police believe Grimmer died within an hour of her abduction, Ainsworth said.

The arrested man was 16 when Grimmer went missing and he had been interviewed in the months after the toddler disappeared, but was never charged. Police reopened the case last year.

  • Serena celebrates with new shoes

    Serena celebrates with new shoes

Serena Williams wasted little time in commemorating her record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title in the open era with a brand-spanking pair of new red-and-black shoes.
With the number 23 etched into the side, the Nike trainers were paraded around by the 35-year-old as she soaked up the post-match pleasantries.
Victory over her sister saw her edge past Steffi Graf to become the greatest Major winner of the open era in women’s tennis.
Despite finally surpassing the German, she still sits short of the overall record, which is held by Margaret Court who won 24 Grand Slam titles
Serena drew level with Graf when she triumphed over world No 2 Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon final last summer.
Having reached at least the semi-final stage of the last 10 Grand Slam tournaments, Williams stands an excellent chance of matching and perhaps overhauling Court’s record.
After clinching the trophy in Melbourne, Serena paid tribute to her beaten sister Venus, saying: ‘I want to congratulate Venus, she is an amazing person and there’s no way I would be at 23 (Grand Slams) without her, there’s no way I would be at one.
‘Thanks for inspiring me and making me the best player I can be. She has made an incredible comeback.
‘This was a tough one and I just kept praying.
