He said the idea to present food stuff as palliatives to his constituents was conceived following the high cost of food in the market due to the economic challenges.

During the presentation of the palliatives and items, the Reps Member charged the beneficiaries to make good use of the vehicles, sewing machines and vehicles to create wealth.

“My husband died five years ago, I have been suffering with my children, the economic problem is too much on me, but as I have received this sewing machine, I will use it to feed my family.

  • Meningitis kills another Corps member in Sokoto

ANOTHER Sokoto State National Youth Corps Service (NYSC) member has died, barely a month after the death of two members.

Funmilayo Samuel, an indigene of Kabba in Kogi State, was suspected to have died of meningitis at Murtala Specialist Hospital in Sokoto, where people infected with the disease are being treated.

A source told CAMPUSLIFE that the body of the late Corps member was immediately moved to another specialist hospital in the state capital after she died.

Funmilayo, a Batch “A” Stream II Corps member, was serving at the Government Day Secondary School in Hamma’alli, a community in Kware Local Government Area – the same local council where the late Daniel Saanu, a Corps member died early this month.

The late Funmilayo was expected to pass out next month, having done her final clearance. Her death brings to three corps members, who died in the state within the last two months.

CAMPUSLIFE gathered that the late Funmilayo taught Social Studies in her place of primary assignment. Her body was said to have been taken to her hometown last Thursday for burial.

Worried by the death of their colleagues, some Corps members have sent distress message to the NYSC secretariat. It was gathered that the state NYSC coordinator, Alhaji Musa Abubakar, will be meeting Corps members this week on the matter.

The aim, CAMPUSLIFE gathered, is to discuss how Corps members would have access to seek a robust emergency medical care, especially those serving in rural communities where killer disease is recorded.

The statement said the police had intensified efforts to establish the identity of the deceased.

“The two persons held in connection with the incident are helping the police operatives in their investigation,” he said.

  • Corps member revamps school’s IT facility

A corps member, Amara Nwoke has donated four sets of desktop computers to Kuramo Junior Secondary School, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The gesture, she said, was to revamp the Information Technology facility of the school.

The school, The Nation learnt, has been holding Computer Science classes for two years without practical sessions due to the faulty condition of their systems.

A quiz competition to test their knowledge and identify areas of strength, was also organised among the JSS3 pupils and the winner, Emeka Ike went home with N10,000.

Nwoke said the project was to ensure the pupils were at par with global counterparts in the digital knowledge and Information Technology, adding that early grooming would enable them learn necessary skills.

  • Navy, corps member take medical rhapsody to Bayelsa community, IDPs

Gwegwe community and the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camping at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, were recently given a reason to smile.

The Central Naval Command (CNC) of the Nigerian Navy and a corps member, Dr. IniAbasi Bassey, who discharges her primary assignment at the Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Delta Safe (ODS), visited them at separate occasions with lots of care and love.

While the Navy headed for Gwegwe, the corps member went to the IDP’s camp. In fact the residents of Gwegwe in Ovom, Yenagoa, were surprised at the medical mission of the navy.

The Flag Officer Commanding CNC, Rear Admiral Mohammed Garba, personally led the medical mission to the community. To show the importance he attached to the health of his host, Garba brought most of the senior officers in his command including the Chief of Staff of the command, Rear Admiral Akinjide Akinrinade to the community.

Residents felt honoured by the presence of Garba, whose achievements within a short period he took over the command in an era of militancy, resounded in their ears. The navy brought cartons of drugs and mobilised qualified doctors to the community to identify and treat common sicknesses.

The Paramount Ruler of Ovom, HRH Mathias Obele was excited at the gesture of the navy. He immediately sent words round Gwegwe community asking the residents to turn out en masse to benefit from military generosity. Obele also invited members of his council of Chiefs to receive Garba and his team.

Within a short time, Garba arrived and headed straight for the humble palace of the Ijaw king. The Chiefs and their king were happy to behold Obele identifying with them. The Naval boss told them that the programme was borne out of the desire of the military to tackle health problems plaguing its host communities.

He said the CNC has been visiting communities within its Area of Responsibility (AoR) for medical missions. He named some of the communities that had benefited from the gesture and said the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) was in support of the programme.

He said through the programme, the navy gets closer to and establishes links with the people for effective resolution of common security problems. He said the programme was part of strategic directive to work with local communities and stakeholders to achieve government’s collective mandate.

Garba had another message for them. He said: “Nigeria belongs to Nigerians. We are part and parcel of the society. We are all Nigerians and Nigeria belongs to Nigerians. We must make sure we protect this country.

“This is one of the ways to reduce tension by reaching out to people. It is easy to solve problem when you reach out to people.”

Garba later told residents who gathered to benefit from the medical outreach that the military especially the Navy cared for the people of the region. He appealed to them not to view every naval personnel as hostile and bloodthirsty describing the Navy as caring and humane.

Indeed, the Ijaw king and his council of chiefs were elated. Obele, playing the Oliver Twist, also asked the navy to consider employing some of the indigenes of Ovom. He reminded the navy that one of their bases, NNS SOROH, is located within the community.

For the IDPs, the intervention of the youth corps member, Dr. Bassey was a big relief. Their condition was pathetic as they suffered various ailments without money to buy required drugs. The IDPs were mostly victims of the violence that marred the last governorship election in the state.

So, when they saw Bassey with cartons of drugs and mosquito nets, they leaped up in joy. They sang, danced and described the young lady as God-sent. Bassey said she was moved by pity after she visited the camp and saw the terrible living condition of the IDPs.

She said: “When I was told there are IDPs here, I went to visit them. The children were malnourished and the general standard of living there was very poor. So, I was moved to help them by doing something about their health because health is wealth.”

“It is my personal community development service. I donated some drugs and relief items to them. You can see that the people came out in their numbers and we had a health talk.

“I donated drugs for malaria treatment because of the pandemic nature of malaria. I gave them analgesic, antibiotics and supplements. In fact, I have given them lots of drugs. I gave them over 100 mosquito-treated nets”.

The corps member, who hails from Akwa Ibom State said she solicited funds from people to undertake the project. She said with more assistance she would do more to help in solving some problems in the state.

Bassey said she was already working on another community development service following some pressing needs she identified in one of the community schools in Yenagoa.

In fact, most of the IDPs thanked the corps member for her intervention describing her as a problem solver.

  • Jimoh Ibrahim not our member, says Ondo PDP

Jimoh Ibrahim not our member, says Ondo PDP

Aide: he is potent party  man

The Ondo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a businessman, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim, at the weekend, traded words over the latter’s membership of the party

Ibrahim, who last week collected his nomination form from factional PDP National Chairman Senator Ali Modu Sheriff was alleged  to have defected to Accord Party by the PDP.

The PDP Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Ayo Fadaka, insisted that Jimoh Ibrahim is no longer a member of the party since he had pitched his tenth with Accord.

Fadaka said: “I can confirm to you that Jimoh Ibrahim is not a member of our party, the PDP. He has since been rid of his membership and we all know that he is a bona fide member of the Accord Party. So, for him now to be making a somersault to pick a form of PDP is a shameless thing anybody can do in this situation.

“Also, I want to confirm to you that Jimoh Ibrahim, apart from the fact that he is not a member of our party, he does not have any relationship with the PDP in any case and if he is taking a form from Sheriff, he confirms to the entire world where Sheriff is coming from.”

Commissioner for Information Mr. Kayode Akinmade said the PDP and the Olusegun Mimiko administration were not bothered by Ibrahim, saying the businessman had never being a loyal member of the PDP.

He alleged that the factional governorship aspirant wanted to play a spoiler role against the state PDP, stressing that the party members were one and there was no crisis within the state PDP chapter.

Akinmade said: “He is not our member. During the last general election, he didn’t work for the PDP; we know who he worked for. As far as we are concerned, there is no cause for alarm. Ondo State PDP is not shaken; we are intact.”

But the Head of Publicity and Research of the Jimoh Ibrahim Campaign Office (JICO), Mr. Sola Akinuli, said the businessman remained a living and potent member of PDP.

Akinuli said: “Our attention has been drawn to the reaction of Mr. Ayo Fadaka to Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim’s picking gubernatorial form of PDP. We note that it is not uncommon for some people to celebrate falsehood, particularly when it is to please their pay-masters.

“It is common knowledge within the PDP that Dr.  Ibrahim ranks the greatest investor in the PDP project since he joined the party in 2009.

“It is on record that Dr. Ibrahim came in when the fortune of the party was nose-diving and his coming added life and vitality by investing lavishly in the party through capacity-building and by injecting 22 buses for the party’s operations which to date remain operational vehicles at the state and local governments.

“He ensured that rallies were held in the three senatorial districts at nothing less than N10 million per outing. His ‘declaration’ rally remains the greatest and most colourful of all times in Ondo State as it attracted the high and low within the party at that time. Attendees included former President Obasanjo, the late Governor Agagu and a host of others.

“For capacity-building, a “Turn Around” seminar was held at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, in July 2014 with representatives from all the 18 local government areas and many egg-heads to diagnose and proffer solutions to the problems of Ondo State. Of special note was the profligacy of the current administration.

“Like any viable and potent politician, there have been overtures from many parties, but he has decided not to abandon his party at this trying time of the current economic recession. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

“He remains a living and potent member of PDP. We also reiterate the fact that Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim is not a nomadic or itinerant politician like the principal of Mr. Ayo Fadaka and employee of the party who has been a beneficiary of Dr. Ibrahim’s goodwill.

“It is, therefore, not only uncouth, but also unethical for an employee of the party to comment on the status of a leader of Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim’s calibre.”

The campaign office appealed to PDP members to remain steadfast, saying the expected “Turnaround” was around the corner.

  • Man arraigned for duping corps member

A man, David Emmanuel, has been arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court in Akure, the Ondo State capital, for allegedly duping a corps member, Idowu Temitope, of N750,000.

The suspect reportedly collected N120,000 from Temitope to help him get a job at the Department For International Development (DFID).

It was gathered that the corps member also paid Emmanuel N630,000 to buy him two cars from two federal agencies.

The Prosecution Counsel, Tolu Abisagbo, said the accused should not be granted bail because other suspects are still at large.

He added that the presence of the accused would be helpful in further investigation.

But the defence lawyer, Rotiji Emmanuel, prayed the court to grant his client bail on the grounds that he is presumed innocent, until proven contrary.

The Presiding Magistrate, Sola Adedapo, ordered the suspect to be remanded in police custody till tomorrow, when the matter comes up for hearing.

  • ‘How our member died’

Leading Islamic sect, Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria yesterday confirmed that two of its members died in last month’s Hajj stampede; one is missing.

Chairman, ADSON Travels and Tours Limited, Dr Hassan Aladesawe said the dead pilgrims were a man, Imam Rasheed Ajao Quadri, and a woman.

He said the woman’s name would be released after briefing her family.

Dr Aladesawe said the late Imam Quadri told a fellow pilgrim that he lost his sandals while going for stoning.

“He returned to where they were selling goods along the Jamrat area to buy another sandals and that was where he was trapped alongside others in the stampede. We pray Allah forgives him and those that lost their lives,” he said.

Jamatul Islamiyyah Society of Nigeria National President Alhaji Taofeek Agbaje enjoined family and well-wishers of the dead pilgrims to thank Allah for them.

“Anybody that completed the Arafat aspect of Hajj exercise has all the sins cleansed. He is like a new born baby that is free of sin. When Allah takes away such soul, Al-Jannah is already awaits that person. That’s why we should thank Allah for those that lost their lives in the stampede,” Alhaji Agbaje, an architect said.

  • I’m still PDP member, says Ogbemudia

Two-time governor of the defunct Bendel State, Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia, has said he is still a bona fide member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a member of its Board of Trustee (BoT).

Ogbemudia addressed reporters in Benin, the state capital, after attending an enlarged meeting of the PDP in the ancient city, where members were educated on e-registration.

Some PDP members raised eyebrows over the presence of Dr. Ogbemudia at the meeting since he had not been active in the party’s activities in the state since it lost power in 2008.

One member, who spoke in confidence, said: “Is Ogbemudia still a member of the PDP or did he come to spy on us?”

“We are surprise he is here. Help us to ask him what he came to do,” a party leader said.

Responding to questions raised about his presence, Dr. Ogbemudia said, “I am a very strong member of the PDP and a member of the Board of Trustee. That is the responsibility. I don’t have any comment on the payment of N1000 for the e-registration exercise. If I want to register, I will register.”

Ogbemudia stated that the PDP would win next year’s governorship election if it produced a good candidate and campaigned with quality programme.
