  • Kogi APC chair, other exco members expelled

The Chairman of the Kogi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Hadi Ametuo and other members of his executive have been expelled from the party.

The Acting state Chairman of the party, Alhaji Ibrahim Ahovi, announced the expulsion of Ametuo and others at a press conference in Lokoja yesterday.

Ahovi, who is leading a faction of the party loyal to Governor Yahaya Bello, said the expulsion was with immediate effect.

According to him, the action became necessary following Ametuo’s failure to appeal the decision of the North Central Zonal Executive of the party which had earlier pronounced him guilty of anti-party activities and recommended his expulsion to the national body.

He said that Ametuo-led executive failed to appeal the decision within 14 days as stipulated by the constitution of the party, saying that the failure to abide by the provision meant consent.

Ahovi said that the party would not hesitate to get Ametuo arrested and charged with impersonation should he fail to stop parading himself as the state chairman of the party.

The factional chairman thereafter inaugurated other new state executive members of the party to replace those expelled.

Ahovi, was until now the state Vice Chairman of the party.

He condemned the recent formation of a body, Save Kogi Group, saying that members of the group were only out to cause disaffection, disunity, hatred among the people of the state.

However, in his reaction to the announcement, the embattled chairman described his purported expulsion as illegal and unconstitutional.

Ametuo, who spoke to journalists on phone from Abuja, said that the faction led by was not known to the National Working Committee of the party.

He described members of Ahovi faction as “political jobbers who are only out to frustrate the ongoing efforts to reconcile aggrieved members of the party nationwide.

Ametuo said that the faction was not also conversant with the constitution of the party, saying that state working committee has no power to expel but to suspend which is also subject to the NEC ratification.

The Chairman advised members of the party to remain calm and be law abiding, saying that the action of the faction should not be seen as an opportunity to aggravate the crisis in the party.

  • Waste: PSP Operators fault aggrieved members

The Concerned Stakeholders of Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWMN) yesterday condemned a statement credited to an aggrieved group within the association faulting the resolve to work with the Lagos State Government and an environmental utility group, Visionscape Sanitation Solutions to ensure cleaner and healthier environment.

The aggrieved group, in a statement by its Chairman, Oladipo Egbeyemi, had distanced itself from the agreement to work with the government to rid the state of filth adorning major streets and highways, describing the resolution as misleading and untrue.

Responding, the concerned stakeholders, in a statement signed on their behalf by Kasumu Afis Olasehinde of Gafista Concepts Limited, said the statement by the aggrieved stakeholders was not only in bad taste but had shown them to care less about the interest of Lagosians.

The stakeholders comprising of 48 Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators in waste management, said their resolve to work with the government to ensure the success of the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI) was borne out of the genuine desire to protect the environment and prevent outbreak of any epidemic in the state considering the resurgence of refuse in public places.

According to the statement, “This kind gesture was warmly received and accepted by the Government, but to the surprise of many, a group believed to be aggrieved from AWMN, has come out to disown us for offering a helping hand, you must ask why? Are they angry with progress? Are they people-oriented at all? Is this challenge a thing of pride and ego to them or service to the people?

“We have been rendering unequalled outstanding waste management service to Lagosians for decades and it is the state of things that necessitated our group’s initiative to offer help and also collaborate with Visionscape. The Visionscape group sees us as partners who will learn a lot from each other and they are willing to collaborate with us to make Lagos clean.

“We also state that the wellbeing of Lagosians is utmost in our mind, and as we approach the raining season, we cannot just watch but also intervene to avoid epidemic, which is what the aggrieved group does not care about.

“We can’t afford to let the initiative fail, because if it does, we will also be considered as failure, hence a need to take responsibility to render service whether paid or unpaid; laudable to say the least and quite commendable and any progressive would agree with my group,” Olasehinde said.

While describing change as inevitable, Olasehinde said it was surprising that some people who in the past had benefited from change were working against progressive change, and also attempting to discourage those who were genuinely willing to help government in the best interest of the people.

“Change is inevitable, other aggrieved operators can collaborate to deliver service with Visionscape without making drama out of it. It should be a collective joy to see people of Lagos living in comfort; you don’t wish failure on a vendor because you feel you can do better, and finally, it is unruly to attempt to pour cold water on the bravery and courage of the noble men who tried to swallow hurts and offer help. If we all contribute something, Lagos will work for us all by default,” he said.

  • Council poll: Oyo APC warns members against blackmail

Council poll: Oyo APC warns members against blackmail

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned its members, particularly aspirants jostling for tickets in the forthcoming local government election and their supporters, to desist from any conduct that can bring the party into disrepute or cause its leadership to lose focus.

The warning followed a protest rally at the Oke-Ado, Ibadan, state secretariat of the party by a group of persons believed to be APC members and supporters.

The protesters said they feared that there were plans to compromise the conduct of the party’s primaries for many aspirants eyeing chairmanship and councillorship seats in the 33 local government areas and 35 local council development areas (LCDAs) in the May 12 poll.

In a statement on Monday by its spokesman Olawale Sadare, APC described the allegations of planned imposition of candidates as a figment of the imagination of the protesters and their sponsors.

The party urged the public to regard it as cheap blackmail to cause unnecessary tension in the land.

It said: “We are indeed embarrassed at the level which decorum was thrown into the air by this set of people, some of who we could identify as APC members in the state. Peaceful and purposeful protests are some of the essentials of democracy. But when cheap blackmail is involved, it becomes condemnable.

  • Dead board members: Party not involved in final vetting- Oyegun

Dead board members: Party not involved in final vetting- Oyegun

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie Oyegun has said the party  was not involved in the final compilation of the list of Board appointees recently released by the federal government.

Oyegun who spoke at a dinner for journalists in his residence said even though the party was involved in the initial compilation of the list, it was not involved in the process of vetting the list before it was made public.

According to him, the party would have insisted that a proper check be carried out before the list is made public if given the opportunity to do so.

He said that at the inception, the party asked for the nomination of 50 people from each state  and the list was submitted to the Presidential committee.

“We have followed the issue of board appointments and I think that issue has raised a lot controversy already.  The only thing I want to add is that it is pretty obvious that the party was not involved in the final stages of the compilation of that list.

“Yes, we sent at the initial stage and I am talking of a period of two years ago. We demanded for every state to make 50 nominations which were sent to the committee in charge of the list for the purpose. They completed the initial exercise that time but since then a lot has happened.

“People have changed parties, people have died, we have three new governors that were not there when the list was compiled. Therefore it was clear that there was obvious need for us to look at the final outcome of the exercise.

“But we are not fortunate to participate in that final stage otherwise it is quite clear such would not have occurred. It is my sincere hope that we will be fully involved in the  review that has to now take place and any other exercise moving forward from this date,” he noted.

The party pointed out that considering the fact that this year will be the build up to the 2019 general election, it will start preparing for the exercise.

“I will resume on Monday and we are going to hit ground running. We all know that this year is obviously going to an active year for elections.”

The dead nominees include Senator Francis Okpozo, who passed on at 81 in 2016 but  was named Chairman, Nigerian Press Council (NPC); Deputy Inspector General of Police and elder statesman, Donald Ugbaja (retd), appointed member of Consumer Protection Council  and the founder of Fidei Polytechnic, Very Rev Fr Christopher Utov appointed a member of the board of the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research.

Fr. Utov was until his death, the proprietor of Fidei Polytechnic in Gboko, Benue State, the first private polytechnic in northern Nigeria. He died on March 17, 2017 in India after battling with an undisclosed disease was buried on April 13, this year, in Gboko.

Umar Dange Sokoto, former emir of Katagum in Bauchi state, who died on December 9th, was picked to join the board of the Federal Medical Centre, Azare, also in Bauchi.

Also dead but appointed are Garba Attahiru Kaduna; Dr. Nabbs Igbokwe of Rivers State, Comrade Ahmed Bunza from Kebbi State and Miss Magdalene Kumu from Taraba.

The APC chairman also gave an indication that a new leadership for the party will emerge before the end of June 2018, with the process beginning soon  with the National Caucus and National Executive Committee meeting, culminating in the national convention.

Oyegun said the NEC which is expected to hold either before the end of January or early February will fix the date for the elective national convention which is expected to produce a new leadership for the party.

  • BIM to deploy 6,000 members

    BIM to deploy 6,000 members

The Biafra  Independence Movement (BIM), formed by Chief Raphael Uwazuruike, has said it will deploy 6,000 of its members to assist in the conduct of the governorship election in Anambra State on Saturday.

Uwazuruike said BIM members will assist security agencies to ensure a hitch-free poll.

Leader of the group in Anambra South Senatorial District, Chief Arinze Igbani, spoke yesterday at Nnewi.

He regretted the arrest of BIM members on Monday, saying they were mistaken for members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Igbani named those arrested by the police as Nwoba and Chukwudi Nwosu.

The BIM leader urged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, and Governor Willie Obiano to ensure the release of those arrested without delay.

He said every member of his group had a voter’s card and had been directed by Uwazuruike to participate actively in the election.

According to him, BIM has never supported IPOB because of its threat that there would be no election in Anambra State.

Igbani said: “We make it open to the world that we are not IPOB members. We are different. Voting at the governorship election will not stop us from having Biafra.

“It is even better for us to be part of the election so that by the time a referendum would be conducted to actualise Biafra, we will also be supported.”

The group staged a protest yesterday at Uga in Aguata Local Government Area against the arrest of its members who it said did nothing to warrant the arrest.

  • Edo APC to begin biometric registration of members

Edo APC to begin biometric registration of members

The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has indicated that it would soon commence the biometric registration of its members across the 192 wards.

It said the decision to do a biometric registration of its members was reached after an enlarged meeting of the state Working Committee with local government party chairmen.

Its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Chris Azebamwan, who stated this at a media briefing, said the registration would help to strengthen the membership base of the party ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Azebamwan said the initiative would help to boost the party’s membership drive, as members of the public would have the opportunity to join and contribute their quota towards the development of the APC.

He said: “All matters relating to indiscipline within the rank and file in the party have been resolved and closed.”

The Publicity Secretary said the party has successfully monitored its  performance index in the state ahead of future polls.

He said the party has established a feedback mechanism through the engagement of 192 Special Assistants to Governor Godwin Obaseki.

  • PDP members defect to APC in Delta

PDP members defect to APC in Delta

About 4,000 members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri Southwest Local Government of Delta State, at the weekend, defected to All Progressives Congress (APC).

Gbaramatu Kingdom is a PDP stronghold.

An APC chieftain and indigene of the kingdom, Chief Michael Johnny, who is deputy chair of the Mainstream Delta APC (MDA), a pressure group in the party, received the defectors, urging them to inform others that the salvation of the Ijaw would be realised through the APC.

Addressing reporters, Vice Chairman of the state APC, Olorogun Cyril Ogodo, said hailed the ‘’submission’’ of Gbaramatu, describing it as key to winning Delta.

He enjoined people to pray for the state to successfully go through the process of escaping the hold of PDP in 2019.

“You should be in no doubt that Gbaramatu Kingdom is the backbone of the Ijaw. What you are witnessing here today is the final burial ceremony of PDP in Delta State because one area APC had not been able to crack in Delta State, since 2015, is this kingdom. But God has made it possible for us today. It’s a big plus for APC in Delta State.

“My advice to Deltans is that they should be steadfast; be prayerful because to remove the Goliath in Delta State, you need the wisdom of God. That giant that has held Deltans hostage for more than 18 years. Prayers can remove them. APC and PDP are going to fight in 2019 and the war is going to bring freedom to the people. APC government is going to be in charge of this state from 2019.

“The population you are seeing here is more than 3,000; you can see the hall here and you can see the people outside. You can see the brother of the deputy governor, Kingsley Otuaro, he spoke last. He’s among those who have just defected  to APC. We are harvesting them, we will not leave any stone unturned, we will go to the nooks and crannies of Ijaw to ensure they support APC,” Ogodo said.

Johnny said the kingdom had been in turmoil since it fell into the hands of PDP, adding that the exclusion the majority of the people in Gbaramatu suffered under PDP would soon end.

His words: “PDP has failed us. In Gbaramatu, you cannot point to one project they have executed, none in Burutu, none in Patani, none in Bomadi, none in Egbema, not even in parts of Warri South. It is because we are not united.”

Dignitaries at the event include the state Secretary of the party, Comrade Chidi Okonji; Financial Secretary, Ebiakpo Ezebiri; an elder from Oporoza, traditional headquarters of Gbaramatu, Chief Joel Gbanale and others.

  • PDP loses members to APC in Rivers

PDP loses members to APC in Rivers

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State yesterday lost members to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Members of ‘’I See You’’ left the ruling party in the state for the APC.

State National leader of the group, Chizi Nyeomasila, said: ”Why we chose to give our 100 per cent support to the PDP in the last election was because we thought that when we vote in a super institution to allow the real concept of democracy to be entrenched into the state, but we later realised that we voted in a super human who has subsequently become a sole administrator, instead of the super institution we dreamt of, at that point we had no other choice than to pull out, since we no longer participate.

“We have come to find out that the PDP is certainly not going to where we’re going, and where we are going is a place of peace, to a place of Wealth and Godliness; I assure you that, the announcement of the defection of 108,000 I see you members from PDP to APC today was the first election victory result that will bring APC into government in the state has already been made, and so it is.

“Today (yesterday), we are here to officially declare for the APC for the APC, we left the PDP two months ago and we are now back to APC.”

A former House of Representatives member,  who is the Executive Director, Marine and Operations, Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Sokonte Davis , said the defection of PDP members to APC yesterday “is an indication that PDP is ousted in the state”.

Davis said: “From the number of representation I have seen here from my LGA, not less than 200 executive members are here. With what is happening in the state recently, the PDP has been chased away from the state. Currently, the APC has two Senators. The truth is that our strategy of doing the formal decamping ceremonies right at the LGAs and communities is to give the communities the opportunity to fault the decampees, by identifying them in person, with the view of faulting their decamping claim. You can be assured that the days of PDP is numbered in the state.

‘’Everybody in the state knows that the present government in the state is not interested in governance, but politics. Politicians all over know that there is time for politics and time for governance, but it is not so with the Present Governor of the state. He believes that from May 29, 2015 he has to play politics till May 29, 2019 and this is the effect of playing politics from the first day, without giving room for governance.

“When you have been elected to govern the people, you govern, when it time for politics you play politics, unfortunately government in the state refused to govern. There is no government in Rivers state instead it is one political issue or the other, and the people of the state are tired of politics, indeed they were hoodwinked, that is our fragile syndrome and according to them, they thought that was going to work, but it will not work and now they are now ready to elect the government they deserve.”

  • Reps to buy N17million car for each member

Reps to buy N17million car for each member

The House of Representatives is spending N6.1 billion on the procurement of 360 Peugeot 508 for its members, it was learnt at the weekend.

At a unit price of about N17 million, the leadership of the House said no members would get more than a car, including the principal officers.

It debunked allegation of favouritism in the distribution of about 200 units that were supplied so far, saying members would take possession of their vehicles by the end of the year.

Another batch of supply is expected this week.

According to its leadership, favouritism was not employed in the distribution of the already procured vehicles.

Speaking with reporters at the weekend, House spokesman Abdulrazaq Namdas explained that instalment supply of the vehicles was due to the financial challenges facing the House leadership.

“About 200 vehicles have been supplied so far and members would take possession of theirs by the end of the year.

“We never promised to supply the 360 vehicles at once because of the financial constraints.

“The budget implementation hasn’t commenced and that is the reason for the instalment supply of the vehicles. But, since it was provided for in the budget, every member will get theirs before the year runs out.

“Complaints by some members is normal because the House is huge and it is normal for some to complain. But, since we are getting the cars in batches, it will be impossible for everyone to get at once.

“Allegation that women lawmakers and committee chairmen were given first was also not true.

“As a matter of fact, it was the decision of the leadership to provide for the new members first. So, you may have a new member having while a committee chairman like myself don’t have yet.

“The distribution was not meant to marginalise anyone; the leadership wasn’t choosy about the distribution. Everyone will be adequately taken care of before the year runs out.”

On why the House had to procure the cars for its members, Namdas pleaded for the understanding of Nigerians, saying there was a level that Nigerians would not want their lawmakers to descend to.

According to him, Nigerians would want their representatives to be deserving of their status.

“Definitely, chief executive and directors in government institutions and agencies have official vehicles attached to them. Why would lawmakers not enjoy same privilege?

“Meanwhile, not even our principal officers will have more than one of the same vehicle and these vehicles are to last for four years and not yearly as we have in other arms of government.

“Our job here is to make laws for good governance and that is what we are doing and we need peace of mind and the goodwill of Nigerians to accomplish this,” he added.
