  • Apc’s membership registration

Iguess it is right to congratulate the All Progressive Congress (APC) on a successful registration of her members. While any willing defunct member of the legacy parties, the Action Congress of Nigeria, the Congress for Democratic Change, the All Nigeria Political Party and a stump of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, not to talk of the so called New PDP, were entitled to lay claim to membership of the new party, the APC; the recent registration exercise offered an opportunity for the party to separate the wheat from the chaff. APC deserves commendation for that peaceful and well organized exercise, particularly the wisdom in having clusters of members registered around the election polling centers.

As Newspapers and Television stations showed the pictures of the politically sagacious Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the itinerant politician and former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the ultra-conservative ramrod, retired General Muhammadu Buhari, former anti-corruption czar, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu and Governor Rochas Okorocha among several others, with their new party cards, smiling into the cameras; it was evident that President Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), are up against a rainbow coalition of political interests. What is now expected is for APC to organize its party conventions from the wards to national level, before dealing with the politically hazardous excise of electing the party’s presidential candidate.

Regardless of the huge challenges ahead, the maturing of APC as an alternative party to the PDP is fundamental to the stability of our democracy. Of course, this column does not agree to the argument, that, based on the concept of power shift, it is the turn of the northern Nigeria to produce a presidential candidate, considering their near monopoly of that position for decades, since our independence. But with APC seemingly settled to produce a northern presidential candidate, it is hoped that such a candidate will be one that will have electoral appeal beyound the core-north and the south-west regions where the party is strongest. It will be a political quandary for the party’s supporters if a member of the ancien regime or a religious fanatic emerges as the APC’s presidential candidate in 2015.

While congratulating APC, the party leadership must realize that it has a lot more work to do, to successfully attract majority of non-partisan Nigerians, who are desirous of change, as the party’s political slogan postulates. The reason for the present lack of enthusiasm on the part of such Nigerians to join APC can be attributed to the crisscrossing and cross-carpeting going on across party lines, which has blurred the lines between what the PDP and the APC stands for. Ordinarily, with the PDP’s baggage of under-performance in the past years, despite our nation’s potentials, the APC’s registration exercise should have witnessed a more momentous registration of more members that would have made the 2015 elections a mere canonization exercise. Presently, it is likely that it was substantially members of the legacy parties and few enthusiasts that may have registered. More potential members will be waiting to see the political priorities of the new party.

So the future of a virile APC as a political movement lies in the party being able to hammer out clear core principles, which must show their uncompromising desire to march the citizens to a new Nigeria. As some friends who consider this column to be an APC sympathizer, mocked me recently; if former President Obasanjo will be the party’s navigator, towards the 2015 elections, then what is the difference between the PDP and the APC? My answer is as I have previously argued regarding the emergence of APC; that, while I wished the new party had gone a different route, the fact that we have two strong political parties in the country, squaring against each other, is a huge leap from where we were. Over time, the pressure arising from the stiff competition between the two political parties will compel the elected officials to give Nigerians a better deal.

Another lesson from APC’s membership registration exercise is that with astute planning, the twin challenges of census and voter registration exercise, needed for a free and fair election can be surmounted. While no doubt, census and voter registration is a more demanding exercise at a larger scale, than the membership registration exercise of a political party, yet, it shows that with adequate planning and provision of materials, the shame associated with our census and voter registration exercise can be surmounted. Should the requisite authorities deal adequately with our census and voter registration, the issue of rigging of elections will substantially diminish and real democracy will flourish.

And if we have free and fair elections, the polity will witness more accountability in governance and also issue related election contests. Also, more qualified candidates will emerge. No doubt, many potential candidates for elective positions are scared away from the system, because of the current opacity. Strangely, none of the parties have shown an unmistakable determination to pursue a free and fair election. The common believe out there is that all the parties try to rig elections, believing that if you sit idly bye, the other party, especially the dominate party will continuously rig itself into power. Now that there seems a near parity in muscles between the APC and PDP, it is time to move over to contest of ideas.

As the APC spring up new innovations, like the recent transparent membership registration exercise, the challenge facing the PDP is to attempt to match them on ideas. The claim by the PDP that APC’s registration exercise is phony, and is in preparation for disputation when the party looses the 2015 elections, is unfounded. What Nigerians earnestly desire is a contest of ideas, not blackmail.

  • Datti Ahmed rejects Boko Haram panel membership

Datti Ahmed rejects Boko Haram panel membership

Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN) President Datti Ahmed yesterday declined to serve on the 26-member committee to dialogue with Boko Haram.

Activist Shehu Sani turned down his membership on Wednesday.

Dr. Ahmed said the bitter experience he had with the Federal Government in trying to broker peace with members of the sect informed his decision to opt out of the Presidential Committee on North’s Security.

He told the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) monitored in Kaduna that the government should be held responsible for the breakdown of earlier peace talks.

He attributed the collapse of the talks, which he initiated with the insurgents, to what he described as the government’s insincerity.

While faulting the composition of the presidential panel, Ahmed alleged that the chairman of the Amnesty Committee, who is a minister and the secretary, another government official, would not give correct information.

He said: “Previously, I made such moves twice and it wasn’t the government that asked me to do that and we reached a stage where, if the government had agreed with what we got, what we resolved with the sect members, by now we would have forgotten everything. Nigeria would have witnessed peace by now.

“We told the government everything we discussed with them (sect) and the agreement we had which were not difficult. If the dialogue was truly genuine, their wives and children that were unjustly detained should have been released because they’ve not committed any crime.

“We advised the government on that; we said even if you continue to detain them, there was no gain in doing so; the government said they would release them, but did not.

“That act showed there was deceit on the part of the government. We also said that if these people were released, a place should be arranged where we would sit and discuss matters.

“Secondly, this committee, the chairman is a government minister and the secretary too works for the government. So, whatever we discuss, they are the ones who will write and take to the government. So, I believe if this meeting is done, what they will write will be full of lies.

“They will feed the government with what the government wants to know and we would be in trouble with the ordinary Nigerians. The minister and secretary will take lies to the government and we would be left quarrelling with young Nigerians, young enough to be our children.”

The Islamic scholar said his previous experience showed insincerity on the part of the government.

He said: It was so successful but the government caused everything to crumble. It was just like we were going to have a peaceful resolution the next day and what the government should have done was not something difficult – just to release their wives and reduce the tension in Yobe and Borno states and stop persecuting the people there .

“The government said it was going to do that but it did not. It is the same government, the same Jonathan and his representative and we are the same people; nothing has changed.”

  • NBA presents world class membership portal

NBA presents world class membership portal

The Nigerian Bar Association under the leadership of Okey Wali, (SAN) has achieved another landmark in the quest for the effective management and administration of its members and activities. The day witnessed an unprecedented deployment and introduction of a world class Bar Membership Portal – the Nigerian Bar Portal, a project directed at the gathering of vital data and information of all lawyers in Nigeria with the aim of having a robust database to enable effective administration/management of NBA members in the country.

The portal is the end result of a detailed and meticulous study of different membership management software, months of painstaking experimentation, technical support and consultancy by a world class IT firm and a visionary NBA leadership.

Members will find new membership experience designed to create the link between the Bar and members. The personal relationship between the NBA and members will ultimately lead to a feeling of a shared ownership of the NBA project, each member being a stakeholder in his/her own way. This portal hosted on the new NBA domain www.nigerianbar.org.ng has the following features available:

a.The list of all the lawyers called to bar and enrolled at the Supreme Court of Nigeria from pre-independence days up until date – This means that the details of all lawyers from the dates preceeding the establishment of the Nigerian Law School, up to those who have recently been called to bar in 2012, are all made available on the portal.

b.The list of all lawyers who have carried out the lawyers verification exercise commenced by the NBA Database Committee in 2011 . The NBA, with the cooperation of the Supreme Court in 2011, commenced the verification of all persons called to the Nigerian Bar and enrolled at the Supreme court in a project designed to stem the incidents of fake lawyers, assist the disciplinary arm of the NBA in the effective discharge of their mandate and create an authentic and reliable database of lawyers in Nigeria. The database created from the exercise now has updated vital details of members (for example, post call to bar names for the married women amongst us, basic contact information such as mobile/cell phone numbers, email addresses, residential and official contact addresses, passport photographs, etc.). It is these details that made it possible for the portal to be interactive. The end product of a successful verification exercise for any lawyer in Nigeria is to be given an Enrolment Number which uniquely identifies the lawyer all through his or her life and beyond.

c.Database verification can now be commenced online through the platform and completed at the secretariat of NBA.

d.The public can easily conduct a search on Nigerian Lawyers using the “find a lawyer” interface on the portal. This will help the association ward-off fake lawyers and enable the public to easily confirm a true lawyer from a fake one.

e.An online payment platform which manages all the payments that come to the NBA. In other words, payments of the Bar Practicing Fees, Branch dues, Conference Fees, and more can be carried out seamlessly on the portal and the funds go straight to the various designated accounts set up for the collection of such payments. Under this platform, branches of the NBA can utilize the portal to collect their branch membership dues which will go directly into each branch account. Ease of payment through a secured mode is also provided for members wishing to pay with their bank debit cards. Payment receipts is automatically generated and sent to members email address within seconds of payment confirmation.

f.Another interesting feature of the portal is the Conference/Event Manager. The portal effectively manages all conference registration activities such as payment, accommodation booking/reservation, access to digital brochures, programmes of conferences, etc. In other words, lawyers can now register and make all the necessary payments for our conferences; make and pay for accommodation reservations around the conference centre, from any where in the world.

g.Personal Profile: All members of the NBA now have a personal profile on the portal where they can carry out their individual activities with an access username and password after signing up on the portal. This profile enables each member to access their bio-data details and update them when necessary. It also gives everyone access to the Payment Menu by which they can carry out payment activities as at when due and receive alerts and notifications on sessions, fora, branch and national news and events, publications, and even ICLE credit grades and units.

h.Using the “Report a lawyer” link, members of the public can now submit petitions for professional misconduct electronically to the NBA and get instant acknowledgement thereby abridging the delay time in the processing of disciplinary petitions.

•Email and SMS notifications platform to enable the National Secretariat; section/fora leaders; branch and event planners, reach all members of the Association with minimal effort.

•News and picture galleries to enable every bar member keep abreast with legal news and upcoming events.

•Committees, Members and Terms of Reference

    •Branches, Chairmen, Secretaries information

•Online store which will act as a sales outlet for NBA publications, and materials

•Law firms/chambers’ registration and Directory to enable the NBA keep record of law firms as well as make the public avoid quacks.

Most of the services provided will only be assessed by members who have verified and with their enrollment numbers. We hereby urge members to sign up and update their picture on their profile. Happily, the NBA President has directed the NBA Database Committee to continue the verification exercise at the venue of every programme of the NBA including NEC meetings, Sections Conferences, Annual General Conference, etc. Our consultants has assured us that the portal and all information contained therein is secured.

The 26th President of the NBA, Okey Wali, SAN had this to say during the conclusion of his presentation speech:

“In the 21st century where every facet of life is going digital as to foster transparency, accountability and easy administration and management, the Nigerian Bar, being the foremost in Africa and the Middle East, cannot afford to do less. I therefore call on all lawyers in the country to embrace the portal, use it and recommend more ways in which the current digital gains can be sustained and improved upon. Today, I, on behalf of the Executive Members of the Nigerian Bar Association, therefore commission this portal for the good of the Bar, promotion of law and in the best interest of Nigeria.”

From the NBA secretariat, we will eagerly await the feedback from members using the feedback link on the website as we hope to be enriched therefrom.

  • Accord to verify Ladoja’s membership

The Accord has said it will meet with former Oyo State Governor Rashidi Ladoja to resolve issues of leadership crisis and clarify whether the former governor wants to remain in the party.

This was contained in a sattement issued by the Accord’s National Executive Council (NEC) after its meeting in Benin, the Edo State capital.

The National Secretary, Samson Isibor, who read the statement, said a delegation would be sent to meet with Ladoja.

Isibor said they decided to visit Ladoja because they are repositioning the party for the 2015 general election.

The party accused Ladoja of using its name to negotiate with other political parties in Oyo State, especially the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Isibor said Accord National Chairman Dr. Isaac Adeniyi was absent from the meeting due to ill health.
