Former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay didn’t enjoy the happiest of experiences at Old Trafford, but his 18-month spell in England did at least prove lucrative.

Depay showed off one of many lavish purchases helped by his £90,000-a-week wage at United, wishing Floyd Mayweather a happy birthday on Instagram sporting a pair of Louis Vuitton boxing gloves worth £3,700.

The Dutchman has embarked on a new chapter in his career with Lyon in Ligue 1, and has already got off the mark for his new club in the 4-0 win over Nancy this month.

And Depay took time out of training ahead of this weekend’s home game against Metz to pay tribute to the retired boxer, who turned 40 on Friday.

The 23-year-old posted a picture of him posing in a boxer’s stance wearing a camouflage jumper with the caption: ‘It’s @floydmayweather birthday today. Have a good one champ! #PracticeMakesPerfect.’

While the message will no doubt have been well-received by the Money Man, the sight of Depay’s laced-up, custom-made gloves will have resonated just as much with Mayweather and his own tendency to flaunt his wealth.

The former PSV Eindhoven man cost United £25million in May 2015, and while that move proved an unmitigated failure, Depay will no doubt believe his purchase of such highly-priced boxing gloves are a sound investment.

Memphis Depay says he did not have a “bad relationship” with Jose Mourinho, even though he hardly played under him at Manchester United.

The 22-year-old left Old Trafford last week to join Lyon after falling out of favour under Mourinho. He played just 20 minutes in the Premier League this season before he was sold in a deal that could be worth £21.7m.

Following his departure, Mourinho did not rule out a return to United one day for Depay, who he said is “potentially a very good player”.

And Depay does not appear to hold any grudge, telling OL TV: “His words were nice. In Manchester, I always worked as I had to. For me personally, it wasn’t all that easy, I needed to play. But we didn’t have a bad relationship.

“He’s a great coach and a great person. Now we’ll see here how I play. In any case, I think he has said good things about me.”

Depay made his debut for Lyon as a substitute in the 3-1 win over Marseille at the weekend. And he says he is ready to push for a starting place: “I feel very good, in top form. My first week was good, training went very well, and little by little I’m getting back into the rhythm.

Depay thanks Man U fans after £21.6m switch to Lyon

Not one to hold a grudge, Memphis Depay has written a heart-felt thank you to Manchester United fans as he puts an end to his Old Trafford nightmare.

The Dutchman took to social media on Friday after completing a £21.6million move to Lyon, where he will wear the No 9 shirt.

Given the difficulties he has faced in the Premier League, and the mixed reception he has received from supporters, Depay could have been forgiven for leaving without a parting word.

But instead he paid tribute to the United crowd, writing: ‘Thanks for all the memories during my time as a Red Devil. I will never forget all your support at @ManUtd’.

Depay joined United for £25million in the summer of 2015 with a burgeoning reputation, but he failed to live up to expectations at Old Trafford and made just one start under Jose Mourinho this season.

He was made available for transfer by Mourinho this month and had several suitors, with Lyon eventually winning the race.

The 22-year-old met with the French club’s head of recruitment Florian Maurice as a deal edged closer, with president Jean-Michel Aulas is keen to see his latest acquisition make his Ligue 1 debut this weekend against Marseille.

Lyon table improved £14.75m bid for Depay

Lyon have made a third offer to Manchester United for Memphis Depay of £14.75million.

After having two bids of £9.5m and £11.3m rejected, the French club returned on Tuesday night with a fresh offer for the Dutch winger.

The 22-year-old Dutch winger’s representatives are already understood to have agreed an outline package for his wages and are waiting for the clubs to agree on the fee.

The latest offer is still short of United’s valuation with the Old Trafford club pushing for nearly £20m in total.

Lyon want to sign Depay by the weekend with the Holland international seemingly convinced about moving to France.

Everton are still yet to move for Depay after landing Morgan Schneiderlin, while Roma’s interest in the winger has yet to materialise.

Depay hasn’t turned out for United since the Europa League win over Feyenoord in late November, with his only start under Jose Mourinho coming in the EFL Cup.

Depay is training with the first team as normal but the club is trying to find him a new club

He was dragged off just after half-time during that tie at Northampton Town and has played just 20 minutes of Premier League football.
