    • Speaker Meranda leads principal officers to GAC

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu knew nothing about the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicit, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, said yesterday.

In a chat on a national television, Akosile dismissed insinuations that the governor orchestrated Obasa’s removal due to a purported rift between the executive and legislative arms.

“No, no, no. There is absolutely nothing true about that. I mean, no, the Governor does not have a hand in it. It was purely a legislative matter,” Akosile said.

He emphasised that Sanwo-Olu was focused on governance and the welfare of Lagos’ over 20 million residents, saying: “The Governor is busy with serious matters, busy with taking care of the over 20 million Lagos population. What happened in the Hallowed Chamber of the House of Assembly was purely the prerogative of the legislators,”

Reiterating that the governor was as surprised as the public about the events, Akosile: “We saw it on the media, just like you. The governor must have watched it like any other person. There is no hand of the governor in the impeachment of the speaker.”

He restated the governor commitment to advancing the state’s development and refrains from involvement in political disputes.

Akosile also clarified the Sanwo-Olu respects the autonomy of the legislative arm.

He said: “The Governor is a democrat, a complete gentleman who doesn’t meddle in people’s affairs. I can’t remember him talking about any of the incidents that you mentioned. Nothing of such bothers him.”

“Mr. Sanwo-Olu’s interest and focus is how to develop the state further than he met it.

“This has been his major preoccupation since he assumed office as the governor of Lagos state and not to get himself involved in unproductive political skirmishes.

House of Assembly Speaker Mojisola Meranda yesterday led principal officers of the house to visit members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), at the Lagos House, Marina, for their blessings.

She told reporters that she went to “brief them about what happened at the House of Assembly yesterday (Monday) and seek their blessings, which we have gotten.”

Meranda sought the cooperation and support of the council members to succeed.

GAC, created by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is the highest decision-making body of the party in Lagos State.

The GAC, led by Prince Tajudeen Olusi, declined to brief the press.
