  • Methodist priest, others regain freedom

    THE Methodist priest and two others abducted in Iwo-Ibadan road on Sunday, by suspected bandits, have been released. They were released on Thursday, according to report from the Methodist Church, Osogbo. It said the victims regained their freedom at about 8.20p.m.

    The Bishop of the Methodist Church, Osogbo Diocese, the Most Rev. Amos Ogunrinde, said the Very Rev. Kayode Akande, and the two other leaders of the church had reunited with their families. But he did not say if any ransom was paid before the kidnapped men were released.

    When the state Police Public Relations Officers, Mrs Folashade Odoro was contacted about the report, she said the police would release a statement about the whole incident later. Akande and the other victims were kidnapped on Sunday while returning from a men’s fellowship in Ile-Ogbo, near Iwo, Osun State.

    The Methodist priest and two others, that were abducted along Iwo-Ibadan road on Sunday, by suspected bandits, were released on Thursday, according to report from the Methodist church, Osogbo.

    According to the report from the church, the kidnapped persons, who are members of the church, were released on Thursday night, around 8.20p.m.

    Confirming the release to newsmen, the Bishop of the Methodist Church, Osogbo Diocese, Most Rev. Amos Ogunrinde, said the priest, Very Rev. Kayode Akande, and the two other leaders of the church that were kidnapped had been released and reunited with their families.

    Ogunrinde, however, did not disclosed if any ransom was paid before the kidnapped men were released by the bandits.

    The News Agency of Nigeria  recalls that the a Priest and two elders of the Methodist Church, Osogbo were kidnapped on Sunday while returning from a men’s fellowship from Ile-Ogbo, near Iwo, Osun.

    The police were reported to have deployed men and officers to rescue the kidnapped persons while the bandits were never reported to have contacted the family of the men to demand for ransom

    The Methodist Church Presbyter of Aagba Circuit, Very Rev. Kayode Akande and two other members from Osogbo Diocese of the church regained their freedom yesterday.

    Akande and the two others simply identified as Mr. Bankole and Mr. Omodunbi were kidnapped on Sunday at about 7pm at Telemu along Iwo-Osogbo Road in Osun State by suspected herdsmen. They were returning from a church programme in Ile-Ogbo, the headquarters of Irewole local government of Osun State.

    It was not clear whether ransom was paid before they were released.

    The three men were yesterday released to the Bishop of Osogbo Diocese, Rt. Revd. Amos Ogunrinde.

    On Monday, the kidnappers were said to have demanded N20 million ransom from Akande’s wife to pave the way for his release.

  • Police in Osun launch manhunt for kidnappers of Methodist priest, 2 others

    The Osun Police Command says  it has  deployed officers to rescue a Methodist priest and two other persons  abducted on the  Iwo – Ibadan Road on Sunday by suspected bandits.

    Mr Mufutau Ayinde, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, made the disclosure in Osogbo on Monday while speaking  with news men.

    He stated that the priest and two others were kidnapped at about 7:10 p.m. on Sunday, stressing that the matter was reported to the Police Division in Iwo.

    Ayinde, who  said officers were immediately mobilised to the scene of the incident, added  that they had been working to rescue the victims.

    He, however, said the kidnappers had not contacted anybody or made any ransom demands from the families of the abducted persons.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some gun men were reported to have abducted  Very Rev. Kayode Akande, and two other leaders of the church  on Sunday  while returning to Osogbo from Ile-Ogbo.

    Confirming the incident, the Bishop of  Methodist Church, Osogbo Diocese, Most Rev. Amos Ogunrinde,  said the priest and the two church members were returning from a Men’s Fellowship held at Ile-Ogbo.

    Ogunrinde said the priest and other members were in a convoy of two private cars when they encountered the bandits on the road.

    He said the bandits, according to reports,  had asked the victims for money but they  could not meet their demand as they were coming from a fellowship. (NAN)
