    Rodger Federer wins Miami Open

Roger Federer defeated long-standing rival Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-4 to win the Miami Open on Sunday and continue his outstanding start to the year.

Since returning from his six month injury lay-off, the 35-year-old Federer has also won the Australian Open and Indian Wells and he heads into the clay season as, once again, the dominant presence on the ATP Tour.

Federer has beaten Nadal in all of those events this year and has now won his last four meetings between the pair.

The Spaniard was playing in his fifth Miami final but remains without a win in the Masters series event.

The first set was a tight affair with both players having their opportunities to break but it was not until the eighth game and 10th break point of the set that one of them was able to get ahead.

Nadal could only find the net from a Federer backhand and the Swiss grabbed a 5-3 lead and he comfortably held the next game to secure the first set.

There has always been a marked contrast between Federer and Nadal’s differing styles and with time it has become further accentuated.

Nadal was working hard in the 83 degrees afternoon heat, thrusting himself into his shots while the elegant Federer’s poise appeared almost casual.

The second set took an almost identical path, albeit with fewer openings to break for both players until Federer again pounced, to grab a 5-4 lead when Nadal went long returning a fine backhand.

Jo Konta becomes first Brit to win Miami Open

Jo Konta touched heights unseen by a British woman in more than 30 years on Saturday night when she outplayed Caroline Wozniacki to win the Miami Open and achieve her biggest payday by far.

Konta ran into the crowd to celebrate with her Belgian coach and the rest of her team after emerging the 6-4, 6-3 winner in the Florida sunshine.

Not only had she bolstered her bank balance by a whopping £950,000 but she has barged her way back into the world’s top 10 by reaching number seven.

This was the biggest title of her career, one of the four ‘Premier Mandatory’ events on the WTA Tour. They do not sound too glamorous but this is only one tier below the Grand Slams – the tournaments that it no longer seems fanciful to say she could win.

Konta, so nearly eliminated in the quarter finals and who struggled through her opening match against the world No 120, was rewarded for her more attacking intent against the Dane.

She clinched the match with a lob that landed just on the line as the despairing Wozniacki chased back. She broke serve six times and gone are the days when she would freeze with the finishing line in sight.

Serena Williams may not have been playing, but that hardly dilutes the achievement of winning probably the biggest event by a British woman since Virginia Wade took Wimbledon forty years ago.

Wozniacki has been at this level many times before, the comparative experience level of the two players emphasising just how much of a relative newcomer Konta remains at this level.

For the Dane it was a 43rd career final, while for Konta it was just the fourth. Infact she had only played this particular tournament once before, reaching the quarter finals last year.

That is a legacy of the fact that two years ago she was barely ranked inside the top 150, before the beginning of a dramatic ascent that shows little sign of slowing.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that he will be replaced in the main draw by American world number 136 Taylor Fritz.

Serena to lose number one ranking over injury

Serena Williams is set to lose her number one ranking after pulling out of the has BNP Paribas Open and Miami Open tournaments due to injury .

The 35-year-old, who landed her 23rd Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open in January, said she hoped to be back in action soon.

The BNP Paribas Open, in Indian Wells, got  under way on Wednesday, while the Miami event begins on March 21.

Indian Wells tournament organisers said Williams had cited a left knee injury as the reason for her withdrawal.

Williams said in a statement: ‘Sadly, I have to withdraw from the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and the Miami Open. I have not been able to train due to my knees and am disappointed I cannot be there.

‘I will keep moving forward and continue to be positive. I look forward to being back as soon as I can.’

Germany’s Angelique Kerber will climb to number one after the BNP Paribas Open, as Williams loses the points she gained for reaching the 2016 final.
