Kelani clocks 67, invites fans to the cinema

Nollywood director and Founder of Mainframe Production, Tunde Kelani, marks his 67 birthday on Thursday in style as he takes to the cinema.

Popularly known as TK, the filmmaker and story teller took to his social media platform (Google+) to invite his fans to the cinema for the viewing of ‘Dazzling Mirage’, one of his 2014 drama film.

Kelani is also a film producer who specialises in producing movies that promote Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and have a root in documentation, archiving, education, entertainment and promotion of the culture.

With a career in the film industry – home and abroad – for more than four decades, Kelani is known for his love of adaptation of literary material into movies as most of his works have followed that style of film-making

A few example of this film-making style include Thunder Bolt, Ko se Gbe, Maami, Oleku, The Narrow Path, and White handkerchief.

Consequently, his love for culture could be traced his extended habitation with his grandparents in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, since his early age.

No denial therefore that the rich Yoruba culture and tradition he experienced in his early years, coupled with the experience he garnered at the London Film School where he studied the art of film-making, prepared him for what he is doing today.

Born in Lagos on February 26, 1948, Kelani is an outstanding cinematographer who has worked as a BBC TV and Reuter’s correspondent with many Nigerian TV stations inclusive.

On Google+ on Wednesday night, Kelani said: “Thank God it’s my birthday tomorrow! Let’s meet at the cinemas to celebrate it with ‘Dazzling Mirage’. God bless you all.”

Thus, he is inviting his fans to Ozone Cinema in Yaba on Thursday for the birthday proper and on Friday, it is FilmHouse Cinema in Surulere, both in Lagos state to see Kemi ‘Lala’ Akindoju, Kunle Afolayan, Seun Akindele, Bimbo Manuel and Yomi Fash Lanso in ‘Dazzling Mirage’.

  • Luol Deng completes move to Miami Heat

Luol Deng completes move to Miami Heat

Great Britain forward Luol Deng has completed his move to the Miami Heat as a free agent.

Deng, who featured for Team GB at the London Olympics in 2012, has spent 10 years playing in the NBA.

He joins the Heat following spells with the Chicago Bulls and recently at the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The 29-year-old’s move follows hot on the heels of LeBron James leaving the Heat to return to the Cavaliers last week.

“Luol Deng is one of the most important free agent signings that we have ever had in the history of the franchise,” Heat president Pat Riley said.

“He is a proven All-Star and quintessential team player, both as a scorer, as well as an All-NBA defender.

“He brings the attitude of a warrior and competes every single night against the very, very best. We are thrilled to welcome him to the Heat family.”

Meanwhile, guard Dwyane Wade has re-signed with the Heat and will join Deng in Miami.

Deng is missing from Great Britain’s squad for this weekend’s friendlies against Latvia, but British Basketball remain hopeful the NBA star could figure in this summer’s EuroBasket qualifiers.

Deng was absent from a 17-man group named by coach Joe Prunty on Wednesday, meaning none of the NBA players included in the provisional 22-man group last month have made the final list.

But while Joel Freeland and Byron Mullens have been ruled out for the summer, talks are continuing with Deng.

Freeland has chosen to focus on playing for the Portland Trail Blazers’ summer league team, while Mullens, a free agent after leaving the Philadelphia 76ers, is seeking a new employer.

The software tycoon John McAfee has arrived in the United States after being deported by Guatemala.

He landed in Miami, after being escorted to the airport in Guatemala City and placed on board an American Airlines flight.

Mr. McAfee said before leaving he was “perfectly happy with the decision.”

BBC says he was detained a week ago after fleeing from Belize, where he is wanted for questioning in connection with the murder of a neighbour.

The 67-year-old has denied any role in the killing. The authorities in Belize say he is not a suspect in the investigation.

He has spent more than a month on the run with his girlfriend, blogging about his exploits.

As he left Guatemala City, Mr. McAfee said he was happy to be going home.

“I’ve been running through jungles and rivers and oceans and I think I need to rest for a while. And I’ve been in jail for seven days,” he said.

He said he had no immediate plans when he reached Florida, only that he was going “to hang in Miami for a while.”

Passengers on the same flight as Mr McAfee said that he had been taken off the plane before everyone else.

A spokesman for Miami International Airport said he would be escorted by federal authorities after clearing customs. It was not immediately clear where he was heading or what his legal status was.

In an interview with Bloomberg Television ahead of his departure, Mr McAfee said he wanted to apologise to the Guatemalan president for putting him in an awkward position during negotiations on a territorial dispute with Belize.
