    Court discharges, acquits ex-Cheveron accountant of N5 billion fraud

    Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya of Lagos High Court sitting at Ikeja has discharged and acquitted a former accountant of Chevron Oil Company, Michael Adenuga of N5 billion fraud and forgery allegations.

    Justice Ogunsanya discharged and acquitted him of the three-count charge of fraud brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

    Delivering judgment in suit marked ID/494C/14,  Justice Ogunsanya held that the prosecution did not prove  the allegation of stealing, conversion and forgery allegation brought against the defendant beyond reasonable doubt.

     Adenuga was arraigned on May 15, 2014 alongside his company, Covenant Apartments Complex Limited on a three-count charge bordering on fraudulent conversion of land, forgery of documents and use of false documents.

    The defendants were alleged to have committed the offence between September 2011 and February 2014 at Aiyetoro, Ikota area of Lagos State.

    He was accused of converting to himself about 22.68hetres of land situated at Ikota Peninsula, Lagos.

     The defendants were alleged to have converted landed property measuring about 22.687 hectares, valued at N5 billion, for personal use after it had been purchased in partnership with Sunday Oyeniran and Joseph Oyeniran under the name of another company.

    The commission said the defendant’s alleged offences contravened Sections 278 (1) and 285 (b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.

    But Adenuga and his company pleaded not guilty to the charge and the trial commenced in the matter on June 15, 2014.

    During trial, the prosecution counsel, Babatunde Sonoiki called eight witnesses amongst who was Sunday Oyeniran who while the defendant led-in-evidence by his counsel, Mr Ehis Agboga testified with other four witnesses for the defence.

    Justice Ogunsanya, delivering judgment in the matter, held that the onus was on prosecution to prove beyond reasonable doubt the alleged offences brought against the defendants.

    She held that there was no contention that the first defendant is the alter ego of the second defendant and the signatory to the second defendant account.

     “It was in evidence that he went to obtained loan of ₦1.8 billion from the Wema Bank.

    “The prosecution relied heavily on the evidence of Pw 1, 2 and 3. The Pw4 had testified that he made the document on the instruction of the pw3. There was no nexus with the first defendant.

    “The prosecution failed to establish that the

    document was forged. The prosecution failed to prove that the document was made with fraudulent intent. There was no confusion on the signature compared by Pw5.”

    “The prosecution conclusion was based on assumption or speculation which has no basis in law. The court has considered all the exhibits before the court. The evidence of the witnesses. The first, second and third prosecution witness have interest in the land, the subject matter.

    “The prosecution has no adequate documentation to prove that the disputed land was owned by any individual other than the defendant.

    “The prosecution failed to establish that the disputed document was made with fraudulent intent.

    There  a lot of transaction took place without any documentation. The

    responsibility of the prosecution is to prove that the property is of another person.”

    Justice Ogunsanya further held that the the document before the court shows that the land in question was registered in the land registry. There was no document that pw1, 2 and 3 were joint owner.

    “The prosecution is unable to prove beyond a reasonable doubt to this court all the charges against the defendant.

    “The court finds the defendant not guilty and hereby discharged and acquitted”, the court held.

  • LASU VC congratulates Abolarinwa, first Nigerian female Urologist

    Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun, Vice -Chancellor, Lagos State University (LASU) has congratulated Dr Abimbola Abolarinwa of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), who emerged the first female Urologist in Nigeria.

    An official bulletin of LASU made available on Saturday noted that Abolarinwa bagged the award at the prestigious “Award for the First’’, popularly known as “Zakilo’’.

    The award was presented to the recipient during the Alibaba Annual Concert on Jan. 1.

    “The LASU management, ably led by Prof. Fagbohun has identified with Dr Abolarinwa and congratulated her very warmly on this unique academic achievement.

    “The university wishes her more brilliant feats in her future endeavours, ‘’ the bulletin stated.

    Previous “Zakilo’’ awardees included: Wole Soyinka, Michael Adenuga, Leo Stan Eke, Chioma Ajunwa, among others.

    LASU recalled that Abolarinwa in her early years attended Air Force Primary School, Kaduna and Military School, Jos, before proceeding to the University of Ibadan to study medicine.

    After graduation, Abolarinwa worked as a medical officer for two years before she commenced her residency training at LASUTH Ikeja, Lagos.

    The female outstanding Urologist currently works in the Department of Surgery, LASUTH.

  • Buhari commends Adenuga for creating jobs in Nigerians

    President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Chief Michael Adenuga who turns 65 on Sunday and commended his deep sense of loyalty and patriotism by investing in sectors that have created jobs for many Nigerians.

    The president gave the commendation in a congratulatory message addressed to Adenuga which was issued by the president’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, in Abuja on Saturday.

    President Buhari noted that Adenuga had added strong value in the provision of effective services that make life easier and more comfortable for many in the country, and across the African continent.

    The President therefore joined family, friends and the business community in congratulating the business magnate, philanthropist and one of Nigeria’s most renowned entrepreneurs.

    He observed that Adenuga rose from a modest background, defied many odds, and realized his dream of setting up and grooming successful companies in the oil and gas, banking and telecom sectors.

    President Buhari stated that apart from creating jobs through entrepreneurship, Adenuga’s contribution to the development of sports and the entertainment industry had remained remarkable.

    The President believed that Adenuga’s exploration and encouragement of youth entrepreneurship in the country would always be remembered, while his penchant for helping the less privileged through scholarships and healthcare financing deserves more commendations.

    He prayed that the almighty God would grant the Otunba of Ijebu land longer life, good health and more wisdom to continue serving the country and humanity.

  • Ex- Chevron accountant arraigned over property conversion

    The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday arraigned a former accountant with Chevron Nigeria Limited, Mr. Michael Adenuga, before a Lagos High Court, Ikeja, over alleged fraudulent conversion of landed property worth N5 billion.
    Counsel to the EFCC, Mr. Jamiu Musa, alleged that Adenuga and his company, Covenant Apartment Complex Limited fraudulently converted 22.68 hectares of land located in the Lekki area of Lagos.
    Musa told the court presided over by Justice Sendoten Ogunsanya that the property is situated at Ayetoro Ikota, Lekki area of the state.
    He said the property was jointly owned by Covenant Sugarland Property Development Limited and Messrs Sunday and Joseph Oyeniran.
    Musa further alleged that the defendant forged a document titled: “Contract of Sale between Covenant Apartment Limited and Kingview Realty Limited to facilitate the theft.
    According to him, Adenuga later presented the document as a genuine one to an EFCC officer, Mr. James Buzugbe.
    He said the offences for which the defendant was charged contravened Sections 278 (1) and 285 (b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.
    Adenuga, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge when they were read to him.
    His counsel, Mr., Ehis Badmus, told the court that he had already filed a bail application and pleaded that he should be remanded in EFCC custody.
    He told the court that Adenuga was diabetic and had high blood pressure.

     

  • Jonathan greets Adenuga at 60

    President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated business mongol  Otunba Michael Adenuga on his 60th birthday, tomorrow, Monday, April 29.

    In a statement by Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, President Jonathan noted that Otunba Adenuga who was recently conferred with Nigeria’s second highest National Honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, GCON will be celebrating 60 years of great achievements in business and philanthropy.

    He described Otunba Adenuga  as an embodiment of the ideals of “diligence, commitment, unmediated  patriotism and selfless service”.

    “Come Monday, April 29, 2013, you shall be celebrating  60 years of a remarkable life filled with monumental achievements in high entrepreneurship, philanthropy and dedicated service to God and country.
