    Ambode sacks LASEMA chief

    Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has sacked the General Manager of the State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr. Michael Akindele.

    The governor also announced Mr. Tiamiyu Muyiwa Adesina as Akindele’s replacement.

    This was contained in a letter signed by the state’s Head of Service, Mrs. Olabowale Ademola, on September 14.

    Although the letter did not state any reason for Akindele’s sack, a state government official said the move was part of the governor’s quest to reposition emergency management operations in the state.

    Seven injured in multiple accidents

    At least seven persons on Tuesday sustained serious injuries following multiple accidents that occurred in the Agege area of Lagos State.

    The accidents which occurred at about 6am and 4pm around Falgbems and Dopemu respectively, were said to have been caused by the recklessness of commercial bus drivers.

    While three persons sustained serious injuries at Falgbems where  an articulated truck laden with a container colluded with three commercial buses, four others were said to have been injured at Dopemu.

    It was gathered that the three commercial buses marked BDG 721 XJ, GGE 759 XN and KJA 25 XH which were involved in the morning accident had stopped on the road abruptly, picking passengers.

    The Nation gathered that the truck with registration number AKD279XR hit one of the buses and in the cause of averting disaster, rammed into the other two.

    It was learnt that road users rescued one of the injured victims and rushed the person to the hospital before the arrival of emergency workers.

    The two others who were rescued by officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency  (LASEMA) and the police were said to have been taken to the Trauma centre by the state Ambulance service for medical attention.

    Confirming the accident, the General Manager LASEMA, Michael Akindele said no life was lost.

    He warned motorists to avoid reckless driving and over speeding, stressing that defaulters will be arrested by relevant agencies and prosecuted.

     

     

  • Woman dies in Lagos building collapse

    A two-storey building collapsed in Mile 12 area of Lagos on Saturday morning, killing a 47-year-old woman.

    The building located at No. 9 Alli close, Mile 12, reportedly came down at 8:45am.

    The General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA), Michael Akindele, confirmed the incident in a statement, saying rescue operation was ongoing.

    He attributed the incident to poor maintenance of the building.

    “It was a partial collapse which affected the balcony of the building.

    “One female victim was killed and the building has been condoned off for safety. The agencies on ground include LASEMA,ERT, Lagos State Fire Service and the Nigerian Police Force, Alapere division.

    “Investigation and assessment conducted revealed that the building had shown sign of distress as some portion of the balcony was caving in.

    “The 47-year-old woman sustained bodily injury and died on her way to the hospital. The occupants of the 16-room building have been evacuated and the building condoned off for safety,” the LASEMA chief stated.

    ‘What we did with asylum seekers’

    Lagos State on Thursday said the Togolese asylum seekers who it accommodated at its Relief Camp in Igando are safe and sound.

    The asylum seekers besieged the Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos Office of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) last Friday.

    The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), General Manager, Mr. Michael Akindele, took journalists on a tour of the camp to see first-hand how the asylum seekers are faring.

    There are 110 Togolese at the camp, made up of 27 families. Among them are 60 adults (35 males and 25 females) and 50 children (24 males and 26 females).

    There are five furnished dormitories with double beds and mosquito nets, each of which can accommodate between 2,000 to 5,000 persons.

    Also within the premises is a dining hall, a kitchen and clinic/sick bay with two doctors and nurses.

    Armed guards provide security, while a Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) official was seen teaching the asylum seekers English language in a large air-conditioned hall.

    The Camp Commandant, Fakilade Olatubosun, said the asylum seekers have been cooperative, adding that they obey instructions.

    He said they pray together in the morning, clean the premises, and are fed three times daily.

    Besides receiving English and Mathematics lessons, they also engage in sporting activities such as football and games. He said only a few of them speak English.
