  • Service is the essence of my being – Bishop Okonkwo @ 80

Service is the essence of my being – Bishop Okonkwo @ 80

After over 40 years of being on the pulpit, Founder of The Redeemed Christian Evangelical Mission (TREM), Bishop Mike Okonkwo, would join the octogenarian league without slowing down on spiritual and humanitarian impacts, writes Sunday Oguntola, Online Editor.

The Christian community is buzzing with excitement over the much-anticipated 80th birthday of the General Overseer of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Bishop Mike Okonkwo. The respected cleric is much loved for service and dedication to humanity and the body of Christ. He clocks 80 on September 6, 2025.

Activities marking the milestone began with a free eye test and cataract surgery at the Eye Foundation, Ikorodu, Lagos, last week. No fewer than 1,400 persons registered online for the outreach, with 871 screened. Of the total screened, 280 had cataract, for which many underwent free surgeries. Not less than 548 reading glasses were doled out to facilitate better vision.

This approach aligns with Okonkwo’s commitment to contribute towards community well-being and human development. Rather than roll out the drums, the preacher chooses his birthday every year to touch lives and impact society.

One of such initiatives is the Mike Okonkwo annual lecture. The theme of the series this year is: ‘The Nigeria of Our Dream: Today’s Reality and a Responsible Pathfinder.’ The lecture will be delivered by former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on September 4, while Major-General Ike Nwachukwu will be the chairman. It is held at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The lecture has become a veritable platform to discuss issues and cross-fertilise ideas on how to move the nation forward. Prominent Nigerians have interrogated issues as guest speakers such as: Chief Mike Ozekome, who spoke on ‘The Christian, The Constitution and Politics’ (2000); ‘Righteousness in Governance,’ by Monsignor Obiora Francis Ike (2001); ‘Investing in the Nigerian Youth: Rescue to a Wasting Generations,” by Prof Itse Sagay for 2002; ‘Consumer Protection, the Right of Every Nigerian,” by Chief Mike Ozekome (2003); ‘Securing the Nigerian Future: Improving the Standards of Education,’ Prof Jegede Olugbemiro (2004) and ‘Building Leaders for Tomorrow a Collective Responsibility,” by Prof Tam David-West.

    Others are: ‘The Rule of Law and Executive lawlessness,” by the late Prof Jadesola Akande (2006); ‘Political Office and Governance: for Gain or Service,” by Prof Alaba Ogunsanwo (2007); ‘Role of Judiciary in Sustenance of Democracy,” by Prof Ilochi Okafor (2008); ‘Global Economic Trend: The alternatives for Nigeria,” by Prof Anya O. Anya (2009); ‘Nigeria @ 50: Its Leadership, Development and the Future,’ by Maj-Gen Ishola Williams (rtd) – 2010; ‘Survival of Nigerian State: Political and Economic Implications,’  by the  late Chief Luguard Aminiwu (2011); ‘Dependence of Nigeria Economy on Crude Oil any alternatives?’ by Prof Anya .O. Anya (2012); ‘Overcoming Nigerian Security Challenges,” by Dr Kalu Idika Kalu (2013);

Others are: ‘Catalyst for a Stable and United Nigeria, by Prof. Akin Oyebode (2014) and ‘The Nigerian Political Class and the Citizens Quest for Good Governance,’ by Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (2015);  For 2016: ‘The State of the Nigeria Nation: Redefining our values,’ by Gbenga Sesan and Mr Frank Nweke II; ‘Made in Nigeria Products: The Vehicle for Sustainable Development,’ by Dr Nike Akande – 2017; ‘Nigeria’s Unity: Matter Arising, ‘Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) – by 2018; ‘Justice as an instrument of Enduring Peace in Nation Building,’ by Mr Femi Falana (SAN) 2019; in 2020 and 2021 the lecture was not held due to COVID-19 pandemic; ‘Nigeria a country at war against itself: The Problems; The solutions and the way Forward,’ by Prof. Anya O. Anya – 2022; ‘Nigerianisation of Nigerians: A Look Inward,’ by Prof Mike Ezekhome (SAN) – 2023; ‘Nigeria’s pathways: Diagnosis and the ‘rescriptions” (2024).

The lecture series has offered suggestions and solutions on the myriad of challenges facing the nation. They serve as Okonkwo’s constant interrogation of national challenges and the appropriate ways to respond to them.

The Mike Okonkwo Football Tournament is another intervention of the preacher to engage youths creatively through sports for national development. Thirty-six male teams and eight female counterparts are participating in the grassroots football event, which began at the Nigerian Institute of Sports (NIS) National Stadium Complex, Surulere, Lagos, on June 14, 2025. The finals of the competition are scheduled for Saturday, 30th August, at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.

Speaking during the kick-off of the tournament in its 20th edition, chairman of the main organising committee, Deacon Malachy Ndubuzor, said: ”This year’s competition is significant because it will be used to celebrate the servant of God who has joined the octogenarian club and also mark 20 years since we started the competition.

”As you can see, apart from using the tournament to foster relationships among the youths, we also teach them the rudiments of the game. Before the commencement of this year’s event, we tutored the goalkeepers on the new FIFA rule concerning how many seconds they’re allowed to hold the ball to avoid a sanction by the referee.”

Ndubuzor while expressing happiness that the competition has come of age with teams from outside Lagos participating, added:” It’s a thing of joy that the tournament that started in the Church’s backyard with some branches has grown to accommodate teams from all over Lagos and this year, we’re having teams from Ogun State which is evidence of its acceptability.

“We also introduced Booth and Bible, which is aimed at evangelising the youths, making them not to lose sight of God, as well as teaching them the importance of coming closer to God and also making the Bible their daily companion.”

The tournament has produced many winning teams with players moving on to academies in their quest for stardom, following the platform offered through the competition. Many players have also been discovered, going on to make their marks in the world of soccer through the vision of the cleric.

The Mike Okonkwo annual national secondary schools essay competition has become a clearing house for budding academic talents and geniuses. It was driven by his passion for quality education and improved scholarship, as well as the development of the younger ones and enhancing writing creativity through discourse on topical socio-economic and political issues for national questions and development.

Speaking with The Nation on why he instituted the competition, he said: “Part of the objectives of the competition is to nurture critical thinking and analytical skills in students as a means to prepare them adequately for the competitive world, as well as to contribute towards raising the standard of education in Nigeria.

“It is gratifying that feedback from participating schools and students has shown and proved that the competition has continued to achieve its objective of inculcating the habit of hard work, improved studying habits and reading culture, development of creative writing skills among Nigerian students, as well as stimulating knowledge.”

“When one looks back and listens to some of the testimonies and feedback we received from the participants and particularly the winners, one is satisfied that the objectives of the competition are being achieved.

“The poor, but brilliant pupils are getting university scholarships through the initiative and there is one of the past winners who was also offered a scholarship by Oxford University in the United Kingdom for his Master’s Degree after he completed his first degree under the full scholarship offered him by Mike Okonkwo Educational & Youth Initiative (MOEYI) as champion of one of the editions of the competition. “I strongly believe we are getting a good result, and this has continued to strengthen our faith in the competition.”

The first prize winner for 2025 is expected to receive a cash prize of N1m, a laptop, and a plaque, while the winning student’s school will also receive a desktop computer and a trophy.

The first runner-up will receive N600,000, a laptop, and a plaque, while the school will be awarded a desktop computer. The second runner-up will be awarded N400,000, a laptop, and a plaque, with the school also receiving a desktop computer.

They would be awarded at the Annual Mike Okonkwo Lecture with Osinbajo delivering the keynote address. Okonkwo, who said he is not tired at 80, pledged he would continue to serve God and humanity as long as he is alive.

”There is no other alternative. Serving God is all that counts for me. I cannot serve anyone or anything else. Being useful for humanity is a direct consequence of serving God. That is the whole essence of my being. Serving God and humanity has become all I know how to do,” he said.

  • Improve welfare to fight corruption, says Falana

To effectively fight corruption, prominent lawyer, Femi Falana has advised the government to improve welfare.

Speaking while delivering the 19th Mike Okonkwo annual lecture titled ‘Nigeria’s Unity: Matters Arising’, at the MUSON Centre, Onikan, Wednesday, the human rights lawyer said: “If the government genuinely wants to fight corruption it has to review the wages of workers, ensure prompt payment of salaries and pension. Furthermore, the government should implement other welfare laws and institutionalize the rule of law and respect the human rights if citizens.”

Falana attributed the disunity in the country to the inequitable distribution of wealth.  He said peace would only reign when the wealth of the nation is enjoyed by all.  He added that redistribution of wealth would make restructuring meaningful.

“Nigeria is not a united country and we can’t have a unity of the oppressor and the oppressed.  Elites do not fight for the people and professional bodies are now run on the basis of ethnicity.  While we must fight corruption, we need to know what has happened, to our wealth. Unless we revisit the redistribution of the nation’s wealth there cannot unity.

“Instead of handing over the country to market forces, government should control and regulate the economy in a way that our abundant resources are channeled towards addressing the crisis of underdevelopment,” he said.

Regarding killings in various parts of the country, Falana faulted religious leaders for identifying with only those belonging to their fold as victims of attacks.  On the contrary, he said deaths of all Nigerians should be condemned and the perpetrators brought to book.

“Nigerians should henceforth condemn the killing of any citizen or any alien living in our midst and demand that justice be done”, he said.

Falana urged state governors to fight for their freedom.  He said he was in support of state policing, adding that if a new Nigeria must emerge, then there must be community policing.

The lawyer also faulted President Muhammadu Buhari’s stance on the supremacy of national security over the rule of law in relation to, saying only the courts could define national interest.

In his speech, Chairman of the event and former Minister of Commerce and Industry in the then Eastern Region, Chief John Nwodo, blamed the youth for not actively participating in politics.

He said many of Nigeria’s prominent leaders started politics in their 20s/30s and called on parents to properly mentor their wards so they can play positive roles in governance.

Also speaking the Lagos State Governor Akinwumi Ambode, represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule said only as a detribalized group could Nigerians develop the country.

Bishop Mike Okonkwo, in whose honour the lecture holds annually, said Nigerians must drop tribalism in favour of national interested.

He added that the President must be President for all regardless of his political leanings, tribe or religion.

The programme climaxed with the presentation of prizes to winners of the 15th Mike Okonkwo National Essay competition for Senior Secondary School pupils.

  • Ambode urges Nigerians to avoid sowing seed of disunity

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Wednesday urged Nigerians to rise above all divisive tendencies for the survival and sustainable development of Nigeria.

Ambode made the call at the 19th Annual Lecture to mark the 73rd birthday of Dr Mike Okonkwo, Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), in Lagos with the theme – “Nigeria’s Unity,  Matters Arising”.

According to him, the coming to being of Nigeria in 1914 is not a mistake, but a divine event for a purpose which Nigerians must work together to actualise.

The governor, represented by the Deputy Governor,  Dr. Idiat Adebule, said that the importance of unity in the development of a nation could not be overemphasised.

“We can achieve little as individuals or groups but we stand to achieve much more together as a nation and as a people united by a common vision.

“At a time in the world when the nations are seeking to break barriers and expand their geographical space to create stronger and more resilient economies, we cannot be moving in the wrong direction by creating barriers of sowing the seed of disunity.

“’It is of essence that we see ourselves first and solely as Nigerians before any other consideration.

“’We need to desist from focusing on our ethnic, religious, political and tribal differences and embrace the Nigerian spirit of being our brother’s keeper, ” he said.

Ambode urged government at all levels to make social justice a relentless pursuit as a way to promote a sense of belonging needed in a multi-ethnic, cultural and religious entity like Nigeria.

In his lecture,  Mr Femi Falana (SAN), said that restructuring was key to sustaining and protecting the unity of the country.

Falana also said that equitable distribution of the nation’s wealth to take care of Nigerians was another way to promote unity in the country.

“’What is of urgency now is to restructure this country because if everybody can be allowed to mind their own business, then our country will be better for it.

“’If we want a new country,  we need restructuring by litigation. The struggle must continue otherwise our challenges as nation will remain. We must also democratise power by giving power to the people.

“’Women should also be given political positions because no country can be free without the liberation of women. It is working for Ruwanda with two-third of  women in political position, it can be achieved in Nigeria too, ” he said

The Chairman of the event,  Mr John Nwodo, President-General, Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo Worldwide, described Okonkwo’s life as examplary and trail blazer.

“God has endowed you with gifts and you have used these gifts to touch lives of many Nigerians positively by establishing over 200 branches of TREM in less than three decades.

“You have been promoting civic education, youth empowerment and organising seminars to touch the lives of many. You deserve to be celebrated.

“Your rejection of materialism by rejecting and opposing `Tithes’  is humbling and examplary, ” he said

Nwodo said there was the need for intelligence gathering and adequate policing to prevent crimes, killings and protect property, lives and unity of the nation.

He also called for adequate mentoring of children to instill values of discipline and prepare them for leadership positions in the future.

The Convener, Dr Mike Okonkwo, urged political and religious leaders to break down the barriers that divide the country along ethnic and religious lines.

Okonkwo also urged governments to prioritise youth empowerment, saying that a well informed person would inform a better and progressive society,  thereby building a virile and world class nation.

The  Mike Okonkwo annual lecture was established  in 2000 to discuss topical national issues to provide solutions to the challenges facing the nation.

Miss Onitilo Deborah of New Chrisfield College, Ikorodu Lagos has been announced as the overall winner of the 2018 Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition for Secondary Schools.

She scored 63 percent in the first round of the competition and 52% in the second round of the competition to come first.

Miss Ashley Davidson of Vivian Fowler Memorial College for Girls, Ikeja emerged second while Master Esigbone Ferdinand of Roshallom International Secondary School, Lagos came third.

The other winner is Miss Fagbemi Ireoluwa of Roshallom International School, Lagos.

The chief examiner, Professor Akachi Ezeigbo, said: “After a painstaking scrutiny, we adjudged only four as suitable for invitation to the second stage of the competition, which is basically a confirmatory procedure to verify the integrity of the original submission.

“The content and structure of the four entries, we must say, are just sufficient to enable the candidates to score grades within the ‘B’ range.

“The implication is the verve, creativity and imagination that we have seen in past performances are beginning to whittle down, even though enthusiasm to take part continues to rise”.

She went on: “The entries for 2018 are characterized by the usual infractions such as confirmed incidences of plagiarism or direct lifting of materials from internet repositories, copying from textbooks and other printed sources, proven cases of collaboration among candidates and evidence that candidates might have received help from either of their teachers or parents.

“The infractions are easily detected because the candidates use language above their educational stations.

“In many cases, we verified originality of entries by conducting a simple Internet check and found many containing significant portions of existing works.

The overall winner will receive N100, 000, a personal laptop, a trophy, a plaque while the school gets three sets of computer and a printer.

The runner-up gets N75, 000, a plaque and the school will get two sets of computer and a printer.

  • Anambra moves against buildings under electricity transmission lines

Anambra moves against buildings under electricity transmission lines

Anambra Government on Thursday said it would demolish all buildings under high tension electricity transmission lines in the state.

Mr Mike Okonkwo, the Managing Director of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), made the disclosure in an interview with our reporters in Awka.

Most of the popular leisure outfits at Abakaliki Street and Amaudo near Aroma Feeds are situated under the high tension power line.

Okonkwo said the Federal Government had already written Gov. Willie Obiano of the state to check unwholesome human activities around the high tension lines.

He said that it was worrisome that people decided to encroach on the spaces under high tension lines because of its cost-free nature.

The ACTDA boss noted that the agency had stopped further constructions under transmission lines and had instructed those living or operation businesses there to move out.

Okonkwo said the danger and death associated with accidents related to high tension were fatal that the government could not condone such deadly adventure.

“We have stopped all construction works going on under the high tension; unfortunately people build in the night to beat our enforcement agents.

“The attitude is that people hold tenaciously to the lands and encroach on the right of way.

“High tension accident is deadly and we have instructed people to stop building under such places and any bulldozer seen there will be seized,’’ he said.

Okonkwo said ACTDA had embarked on dislodging of shanties and illegal settlement in line with its urban renewal programme.

He added that the shanties evacuated included those at Ngozika Kwata and Nise where criminal elements were using as hide outs.

Okonkwo, however, encouraged Awka residents to go for decent accommodation and urged those who wished to live in cluster to acquire a piece of land and develop.
