MANCHESTER UNITED WIN:Mikel holds ball well, says Mourinho

Nigeria international John Obi Mikel earned praises from Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho for his role in the Blues’ 1-0 win over Manchester United on Saturday.

Although, the Super Eagles midfielder was in action for just four minutes but the Portuguese coach extolled Mikel for helping Chelsea secured the all important win at  Stamford Bridge to move closer to the English Premier League title.

Mikel made Chelsea’s return from injury that kept him out of action for weeks when he came on as a substitute for Cesc Fabregas in the game dominated by Manchester United.

The 23-year-old was sent on to stop Louis van Gaal’s side who have been in rampant form of late.

Chelsea were forced to defend on the edge of their own penalty area for much of the game as United took the initiative but Eden Hazard’s first-half strike making the difference.

The visitors had 70 per cent of the possession but were thwarted by a side that employed Nemanja Matic, Kurt Zouma and substitute Mikel in front of a back four that refused to budge. Mikel was singled out for praise as Mourinho praised each player for the way they fought to keep the visitors at bay.

Mourinho said:“The team was fantastic . I’m the one that knows how fantastic it was. The game was exactly what we want. When we manage to play the game we want to play, the game was fantastic.

“Eden had that magic that the top ones have, especially in big matches. Obviously it was fundamental for us, but I think (Gary) Cahill made an amazing block on a (Radamel) Falcao shot. JT was amazing. The keeper was great.

“(Cesar) Azpilicueta was, for me, the best player on the pitch. (Nemanja) Matic worked like an animal. (Kurt) Zouma put (Marouane) Fellaini outside the game. The number 11 (Didier Drogba) was another animal fighting against two kids with age to be his son.

‘Oscar worked fantastically well, Ramires came in and gave what we need, even (John Obi) Mikel came in and held the ball. And Willian, who was in bed for two days  came and made himself available to give a little help. It’s fantastic.”

  • Like Moses, like Mikel

    Like Moses, like Mikel

It wasn’t shocking that victor Moses rejected a return to Chelsea last January. Moses reckoned that Jose Mourinho’s request for him to return to Stamford Bridge was poisoned chalice.

Why? Moses would rather be a hero at Stoke than to play second fiddle to anyone. The Nigerian would rather the head of the goat that is visible than the tail of the elephant, most times hidden between its legs. Moses wants to play regularly, having enjoyed rave reviews at Stoke.

Until Moses limped out of Stoke’s game penultimate Saturday, he cherished reading the local English papers and seeing his pictures celebrating goals scored – a rarity when he was at Chelsea. Moses’ goals while playing for Chelsea are as far and wide apart like the dentition of an octogenarian, no thanks to the fact that he hardly played regularly at Chelsea. At Stoke, he is the pivot of the team’s attack whenever he is fit.

Moses knows that Chelsea’s pay is almost four times bigger than what he earns at Stoke. He must have computed what he earns at Stoke with the match bonuses for games won and drawn. Moses’ evaluation should have shown that it paid him more to remain at the Britannia Stadium than being a spectator at Stamford Bridge.

Moses knows now that his meteoric performance at Stoke is not lost on many European teams, who would secretly be nursing the desire to sign him on when the European transfer season opens in August. Chelsea’s manager must have been hurt by Moses’ bluff. But the Nigerian knows his onions and wants to move on at his terms. Moses wanted to sign for a club that values him, not one which thinks that it is doing him a favour, like with the Blues.

Moses has dual nationality. He can be tagged a European even though he plays for Nigeria, the land of his birth. So, all he needs do is excel for a small club, such as Stoke, and expect bigger teams to do seek his services.

Moses’ story is deliberate. Why? It has a correlation with John Mikel Obi’s fate at Chelsea. Until recently, Mikel’s inclusion at Chelsea was on the foreigner slot. Today, Mikel is tagged a European, having satisfied the requirements for a dual citizenship.

Many have asked what Mikel is still doing at Chelsea. Seasonally, Mikel gets listed among likely players to leave the team. But, he remains for tenable reasons. Mikel has stayed this long in London with Chelsea because he wants the European status. Being European means his movement won’t be scuttled by the new FIFA clause on number of foreign stars in a team. Mikel attained the European status this year. But can Mikel dump Chelsea? Or would he prefer Chelsea to dispense of his services? How many more playing years does Mikel have? Or does Mikel want to leave Chelsea on free transfer?

One thing is clear about Mikel’s career. He appears to be satisfied with being a one-club player. He likes Chelsea to the marrow. But if he must command respect, he needs to join another team next season. If he so loves England, he could seek employment in many English teams who would scamper to get him to strengthen their midfield. Mikel must understand that the Frank Lampard scenario awaits him, if he fails to take the plunge for the better next year.

If he moves next season, he could be listed among the three senior players in Nigeria’s Olympic Games squad. Mikel hasn’t played at the Olympics. He missed the Beijing 2008 edition due to his loyalty to Chelsea. Otherwise, he would have been a silver medalist today, although many aficionados argue that had Mikel been with the Nigerian team in Beijing, they would have won the gold medal, like this country did in Atlanta in 1996.

Mikel has won lots of laurels at Chelsea- the UEFA Champions League, Europa Cup, Barclays English Premier League and the Capital One Cup. He is also a gold medalist at the Africa Cup of Nations. Mikel is easily the most decorated Nigerian player.

He needs to move forward like Sunday Oliseh did in his playing days. He should shake hands with Mourinho and head for any European team with continental ambitions. Playing second fiddle to younger players at Chelsea would be an irony of sort for Mikel, who broke into the team as a kid. Mikel has a very reliable manager in John Ola Shittu.  He needs to whisper into Shittu’s ears that he wants to call it a day at Chelsea next year instead of waiting to be transfer-listed at the Blues. If Mikel waits until he is transfer-listed, then he should know that he would be having two options- quit the game for good or play in the lesser leagues, like Yakubu Aiyegbeni is doing at Reading FC in England.

    Dolphins’ agony

It is pertinent that we stop the buck passing over the shameful walkover of Dolphins FC of Port-Harcourt in Tunisia. If we don’t, we will spend the next one year on the matter while the culprits walk away to another club and repeat the same offence.

Dolphins FC folks are no new comers to participating in the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF’s) inter-club competitions. They know the rule, especially as it concerns travelling arrangements. Customarily, clubs send advance parties to the away grounds where they have a game.

The essence of this advance party most times is to inspect the accommodation provided by the hosts to see if it is suitable. Sadly, most African nations employ all the tricks in the book to destablise their visitors right from their arrival at the airports. They either keep their visitors in hotels far away from the stadium or not make suitable arrangements for them to leave the airport. But if there is an advance party, they would liaise with the Nigerian embassy officials in such countries and make their own plan for a seamless exit from the airport on arrival.

Some unscrupulous club chiefs deliberately book their visitors in red light zones just to distract the players and officials. Several instances abound where Nigerian teams have rejected the hotels booked for them for other suitable arrangements.

Sadly, such continental assignments disunite Nigerian teams, with officials divided into many groups. In such circumstances, everyone leaves the arrangement till the last minute so that a task that would ordinarily cost N100,000 would cost N1.5 million. Such panic setting is for club officials, time to “chop and I chop.” This cartel isn’t interested in the outcome of the game but what they stand to gain for as long as the team is still in the competition.

But it is pertinent to ask the players why they embarked on the strike with just 48 hours to the game? It is true that they wanted to hold their officials by the throat, knowing that that was the only way they could get their outstanding entitlements.

The players ought to have resigned when they knew they couldn’t continue with the club. It is foolhardy for the players to now plead for forgiveness after throwing away the opportunity to showcase our soccer in North Africa. My candid advice to the Rivers State Government is to ensure that the ring leaders in the “show of shame” are sacked and reported to the NFF for further sanctions. This idea of players holding us hostage over their entitlements should stop. I feel that the government cast an indulgent eye on the matter when Sharks FC and Dolphins’ players and officials slept at the Brick House in Port Harcourt.

    Fight of the Century

I’ve enjoyed the build-up to the Fight of the Century between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao at the famous MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 2. The two boxers are known. For the records, the expected revenue from the fight is over $400 million.

Sky won the right to show the $300m (£200m) mega-fight in UK. HBO and Showtime will show the fight on pay-per-view in the US. Pay-per-view price is £20.The price for the fight has been set at £19.95 until midnight of Friday May 1. The cost will remain the same for those paying via remote control or online, but will be £24.95, if booked via phone after Friday. Ticket sale is expected to raise $74, almost four times the record.

This is the way big fights are arranged. Nothing is left to chance. Indeed, boxing experts are sharply divided over the outcome of the bout. The Fight of the Century is a box office hit. The deal has been struck by renowned agents. Each boxer knows his prize money. Nither of the boxers is heading for his country’s President for moral or financial support.

The boxers have gone back to their gyms to prepare for the fight. They are focused on perfecting their tactics. They are not the boxer, marketer, and organiser of the event like we have in Nigeria. There is division of labour about every aspect of the fight, leaving the boxers and their corners cracking their heads for the opponent’s flaws and strength.

So, those who want to organise boxing fights in Nigeria under any kind of nomenclature must be well guided. No rascality is needed. There are set rules. Which still-born fight in Nigeria is this writer writing about? No prize for guessing right, dear reader.

  • Chelsea plot Mikel, Pogba swap deal

Chelsea plot Mikel, Pogba swap deal

Super Eagles midfielder John Obi Mikel is once again linked with a move away from the Premiership leaders with latest reports saying he will be used as lightweight to sign Paul Pogba.

According to the Daily Express Chelsea will bid 40 million pounds for the Juventus 21-year-old midfield maestro and will balance the books by allowing players go in part exchange.

Players tipped to be used as sweetener for the Pogba bid by Chelsea include Brazilian midfielder Ramirez, Germany forward Andre Schurrle with Obi Mikel listed as first option.

This is not the first time Mikel has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge but this time around any deal to take him away has to wait till the summer.

Mikel, one of Chelsea longest serving players presently in the team, fell down the pecking order at Chelsea following the signing of Nemanja Matic a year ago.

This season his route back into the team has been blocked by the near perfect partnership of Matic and summer signing Cesc Fabregas in the middle for the Blues.

Galatassary, Schalke 04, AC Milan are teams who have been linked to Mikel in the past as his 8-year stay at Chelsea appears to be coming to an end though he is still contracted to the team until the summer of 2017.

Mikel BOASTS: Liverpool will fall at Stamford Bridge

NigerianInternational Mikel Obi returned to first team action for Chelsea against Liverpool in the first leg semifinal of the Capital One Cup which ended 1-1 after sitting out the Blues 5-0 rout of Swansea City last weekend and he’s feeling confident of the Blues progression to the final.

“We were disappointed to concede the goal but we need to make sure we finish it back home. We didn’t lose and we scored. The away goals count, so we’re still in a good place,” the Super Eagles star told BBC Sport after the game.

The 27-year-old couldn’t help Chelsea see out a win in the encounter as they surrendered a first half lead courtesy an Eden Hazard penalty to a brilliant solo effort by Raheem Sterling when he walked past the Blues defense like knife through butter which left them feeling like they had heavy stones in their boots.

But despite the result at Anfield Mikel believes that Chelsea has all it takes to finish the job at Stamford Bridge in the return leg.

Mikel and his Chelsea teammates will next be in action at the weekend against Bradford City in the FA Cup before welcoming Liverpool on Tuesday for the second leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final.

120 Most expensive footballers: Mikel, Enyeama not listed

TheInternational Centre for Sports Studies, CIES, has published the 120 most expensive footballers in the world based on their current market values.

In order to qualify to make the list, the footballer must be plying his trade in one of the top five leagues in Europe, that is Spain, England, France, Germany and Italy.

Regrettably, no Nigerian player was mentioned by the Switzerland-based organisation, though the likes of Mikel, Onazi, Ujah, Enyeama and Ikechukwu Uche display their wares in the prestigious championships.

The only consolation is that Bayern Munich’s Austria international David Alaba, who has Nigerian blood flowing in his veins, is ranked in the 56th position while England midfielder Ross Barkley is among the players in the top 40.

Five of Mikel’s teammates at Chelsea – Eden Hazard, Diego Costa, Francesc Fàbregas, Oscar and Thibaut Courtois – were named in the top 20.

As expected Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is the most valuable player in the world followed by Real Madrid poster boy Cristiano Ronaldo.

  • Mikel rejects AC Milan

    Mikel rejects AC Milan

Chelsea midfielder, John Obi Mikel, has reiterated that his immediate future lies in London, with reports strongly linking him with a January move to AC Milan.

The Rossoneri manager, Filippo Inzaghi, wants to add another midfielder to his squad, and has beamed his searchlight on the experienced Super Eagles star.

However, Mikel has insisted that he will not be joining another team in the winter transfer market, stressing that he will weigh up his options in the summer.

”For now, Mikel is remaining at Chelsea. It is true AC Milan are interested in him. He doesn’t have the mind of changing clubs in this window. He wants to concentrate on the Premier League, and after the season he’ll make a decision,” one of Mikel’s representatives told SL10.ng.

Schalke 04 coach Roberto Di Matteo had been in touch with Mikel’s camp over a move this month, but the Nigeria international was no longer enthusiastic after getting a run of games.

To cut a long story short, the 27-year-old intends to see out the remainder of his contract except he is declared surplus to requirements by manager Jose Mourinho.

This season, the ex-Lyn Oslo man has appeared 12 times in the English Premier League, including four starts.

  • Best African star for December: Mikel nominated for EPL top award

Best African star for December: Mikel nominated for EPL top award

Mikel Obi will battle Swansea striker Wilfried Bony, Sadio Mane of Southampton as well as Alex Song from West Ham for the best African performer in the EPL for the month of December.

Giving details, New African Soccer’s Awards Director and CEO Tunde Adelakun stated that the choice was a difficult one, given the busy schedule of games in the EPL in December.

“We had varying and diverse opinions from our followers, and this is understandable,” he said, “given the many matches that were played in December and the involvement of a high number of Africans”.

“Wilfried Bony has featured in the shortlist on two occasions in the past, as he continued to lead the line for Swansea City. His physical presence, tenacity and knack for goals has brought the attention of many clubs to him, and Swansea might have a job keeping him with the January transfer window looming.  Swansea has dropped marginally in the EPL log but Bony’s presence and impact is noticeable”, Adelakun said.

Southampton’s Sadio Mane, 22, has been in good form as he settled down gradually into his role at the southern coast club, and Adelakun was quick to provide justification for his inclusion in the shortlist.

“Mane is young and very skilful, and he brings something different into the Southampton team. He has taken time to settle, but from the games he played in December, one can see what a real asset he is turning into. Goals against Crystal Palace and Chelsea in succession are just crowns at the top of encouraging performances in the month, and I think Southampton will miss him when he goes for the African Cup.”

One late entrant into the fray is Chelsea’s Mikel Obi. The Nigeria midfielder did not have an active start to the season as many might have expected, partly due to the excellent partnership in the middle of Chelsea’s park of Fabregas and Matic. But it was all the more reason why Adelakun felt that he deserved a shout in December.

“Mikel is playing in the midst of gifted individuals at Chelsea and I was one of those who felt his playing time was over at the club at the start, but he battled his way back to the starting eleven, and has been solid and formidable since”, Adelakun said.

Alex Song, Cameroon midfield maestro, makes up the fourth name on the shortlist. He is a versatile player who, according to Adelakun, “held things together in the midfield for West Ham until the latter stages of December when they faced different class of opposition”.

“Song has settled in well, and he is an asset for West Ham. He suits Allardyce’s style of play and he is pivotal to where West Ham will finish at the end of the season”.

The winner of the December award will be announced at the weekend.

  • Mikel nets first Champions League goal

Mikel nets first Champions League goal

When Chelsea lost to Newcastle last weekend, Nigeria’s John Mikel Obi was made the scapegoat as he was blamed for not marshalling the midfield as well as Serbian Nemanja Matic who missed the game through accumulation of five yellow cards.

But in Wednesday night’s Champions League clash against Sporting Lisbon, the former Lyn Oslo star gave a star performance and earned a goal for himself when he bundled home Chelsea’s third goal on 56 minutes to make it 3-1 and add to Cesc Fabregas and Andre Schuerrle goals for the Blues.

The goal is Mikel Obi’s first ever Champions League goal for Chelsea after 58 appearances. The goal wasn’t beautiful or spectacular but was a significant strike for the Nigerian as he celebrated like a newly wed with teammates who embraced him with graciously for a job well-done.

The Blues were already assured of qualification as goals from Cesc Fabregas, Andre Schurrle and John Obi Mikel secured the victory, despite Adrien Silva’s effort for the Portuguese side.

Spain international Fabregas was handed the chance to give his side the lead from the penalty spot after eight minutes thanks to a foul on Filipe Luis.

Fabregas made no mistake from 12 yards before Germany international Schurrle doubled the advantage shortly after.

Schurrle managed to find some space on the edge of the box and the former Bayer Leverkusen forward curled an effort beyond Rui Patricio into the bottom corner.

Nemanja Matic should have made it 3-0 on the half-hour mark but his somehow missed the target when well placed inside the area.

The Portuguese side reduced the deficit less than five minutes into the second period when Adrien Silva chested down a half cleared ball before drilling past Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal.

There an almost instant replay from Jose Mourinho’s side but Mohamed Salah was denied by an excellent stop from Patricio.

Mourinho’s men didn’t have to wait too much to longer to regain their two-goal cushion though and it was Mikel who got his name on the scoresheet with a close-range finish.

Islam Slimani almost reduced the deficit once more but the Sporting striker was thwarted by Cech’s save on 63 minutes.

  • Shearer blames Mikel for Chelsea’s loss

Shearer blames Mikel for Chelsea’s loss

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has blamed Nigeria international, Mikel Obi for Chelsea’s 2-1 loss at Newcastle on Saturday which ended their unbeaten run. Shearer said Mikel did not do well enough in the midfield emphasising that Jose Mourinho side missed suspended Nemanja Matic.

“Chelsea didn’t play that well,” Shearer told BBC Sport.  “There is no doubt they missed Nemanja Matic. He has started every game for them this season but John Mikel Obi was in there against Newcastle and didn’t do as well. In the build-up to Newcastle’s second goal, Mikel dives in, Eden Hazard dives in. There is no one sitting in front of the back four.

“That said it was a really committed Newcastle performance. They were really well organised and every player knew what job they had to do. It was a thoroughly deserved win.”

The Serbia international who has scored a goal and two assists in 14 EPL games was suspended for the trip to ‘The Magpies’ after he picked up his fifth booking of the season in a 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

  • CHELSEA’S LOSS TO NEWCASTLE: Fans divided over Mikel’s Performance

CHELSEA’S LOSS TO NEWCASTLE: Fans divided over Mikel’s Performance

Super Eagles midfielder, John Obi Mikel, made his first Premier League start of the season for Chelsea in their loss to Newcastle United on Saturday.

Some fans have taken to Twitter to express their feelings for the Nigerian who is one of the most experienced in the Chelsea squad. The absence of Nemanja Matic (a big presence in the midfield) in the squad gave way for John Obi Mikel to have his first start of the season.

The Nigerian who played an important role for the Super Eagles had a nice game at the Tyneside. Mikel made his presence count, had some great tackles and the most interesting part of his display was his point blank passes that caused more problems for the Newcastle back line at the later stage of the match.  With comparison between him and Matic obvious, John Obi Mikel didn’t have much influence like Matic does and his speed has  been a major reason but the fans thought otherwise about Mikel’s performance. Below is a list of reaction by Chelsea fans on Twitter:

Dougie_Triks ” Fabio collocini was the man-of-the-match but Mikel contributed to our loss with an excellent performance.”

Imeh Okanlawon ” Mikel was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. His performance was better than Oscar’s today”

Gbasayne “Didn’t feel Schurrle offered anything, should’ve brought on Ramires. For Mikel, Poor performance, no spark, no excuse. Unbeaten dream over #CFC”

Edeh Samuel “What a great performance for our long term serving servant John Obi Mikel”.

    Eromzy “Disgraceful performance. Totally disgraceful”.

Pete Woj “Mikel is crap. That performance was crap. CRAP. How bout some fresh legs, Mou?! We need a reinforcement or 2 in Jan”.

Carbislli “Mikel was sensational today, the shining light in an otherwise gloomy performance”.

IFootballPlanet “Absolutely dominating performance from Mikel today in Matic’s absence”
