AfricaN player of the Year: Keshi picks Mikel

Super Eagles Head Coach Stephen Keshi has expressed optimism on the possibility of John Mikel Obi winning the 2013 African Footballer of the Year award.

The Big Boss said: “It has been a long time since a Nigerian won the award, and I think John Mikel Obi has paid his dues at both club and national team level and should be able to win it this time around.

“He played a very significant role in our winning the Africa Nations Cup in South Africa last year, that was after 19 years. His role in Chelsea was very overwhelming.

“So, unless there are other criteria that are used in the selection, I think Mikel is head and shoulders above the other nominees.”

Pushed further to make a comparison of the three shortlisted players, the Big Boss said: “What are you comparing? I have given you an analysis of Mikel Obi’s achivements in the year 2013, which is not taking away anything from Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba who are among the best African players. I think Mikel is head and shoulders above the two in the year 2013.”

The former Togo and Mali national team coach was however not forthcoming on his nomination for the Coach of the Year. He said: “Lets keep our fingers crossed and see how it goes next week.”

Kanu Nwankwo was the last Nigerian player to win the award in 2000 after the likes of Rashidi Yekini, Emmanuel Amunike and Victor Ikpeba.

    • As stakes go high

Jose Mourinho may just have sacrificed Super Eagles midfielder, John Obi Mikel, as the Portuguese took him off and brought on Juan Mata for the second half against Tottenham.

The stakes were raised in the English Premiership on Saturday, as Spurs took a first half lead, with Mourinho likely to blame the Nigerian defensive midfielder for the error that led to the goal.

Mikel had slowed down as the Spurs midfielders buzzed past him, and failed to track back as Spurs went on and scored the goal.

Mourinho then took Mikel off at half time, moved David Luiz to the defensive midfield role, and pushed Mata into the other creative space beside Oscar.

This formula seemed to work, as Chelsea played better and scored the equaliser through John Terry off a Mata assist.

The fear is that this may be the formation Mourinho will stick with, as the Portuguese continue to look for what will best work for him at Chelsea.

Mikel warns: Beating Arsenal won’t be easy

Super Eagles midfielder, John Obi Mikel has been talking up the chances of Chelsea ahead of Monday’s Barclays English Premier League clash against Arsenal.

Chelsea will go above the leaders, Arsenal in the Barclays English Premier League standings if they defeat the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium today but Mikel knows the feat will be no walk in the park.

“There has been some stability at Arsenal. And I think people criticising them for failing to win a trophy has helped too. They have not won a trophy yet but you can see they are heading in the right direction,” Mikel told Premier League Television (PLTV).

The Chelsea midfielder also reserved words of praise for the Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger for staying true to his football ideologies and long-term project in North London.

“Arsene Wenger is building something at Arsenal and it’s showing now in the way they are playing and their current position in the league table. They have a very good chance of winning the league title but so do we,” he said.

Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho has been critical of his players of late for their failure to finish off teams in recent games.

Mourinho was upset that begging chances were not converted as Chelsea relinquished a one-goal lead to lose 1-2 to Sunderland to crash out of the League Cup after extra time on Tuesday.

Mikel says the criticism of the “Special One” has not been over the top even as he promised perceived loopholes would be plugged in the coming days beginning with Monday’s trip to the Emirates Stadium.

“We want to go there (Emirates Stadium) on Monday night and prove what we are made of. He (Mourinho) makes his views clear to us after the games. If we win, he’s happy. If we don’t, he’s not. Hopefully, by Monday, we will put things right. We are playing well and we are doing a few things correctly.

“We need to put the finishing touches and finish off chances when we get them. At the same time we have to defend well too. We want to be top of the table by Christmas and that’s what we are aiming for,” he said.

Mikel has made 10 league appearances for Chelsea this season and has scored once for the Blues against Fulham on September 21 at Stamford Bridge.

  • Chelsea on top by Christmas – Mikel

Chelsea on top by Christmas – Mikel

Nigeria star Mikel Obi has said Chelsea aim to be top of the English Premier League table by Christmas.

The London club is fourth on the table with 33 points, three points behind leaders Liverpool and faces a litmus test in Monday’s capital city derby against local rivals Arsenal.

And on Boxing Day the former European champions host Swansea City.

“We want to be top of the table by Christmas and that’s what we are aiming for,” MTNFootball.com quoted Mikel as saying on Premier League Television (PLTV).

“We need to put the finishing touches and finish off chances when we get them. At the same time we have to defend well too.

“We want to go to the Emirates Stadium on Monday night and prove what we are made of.

However, the Nigeria international midfielder is first to admit Arsenal will be a hard nut to crack at the Emirates.

“There has been some stability at Arsenal. And I think people criticizing the team for failing to win a trophy have helped too. Arsenal has not won a trophy yet but you can see the team is heading in the right direction,” he said.

“Arsenal has a very good chance of winning the league title but so do we.”

Mikel said “The Special One” Jose Mourinho loves to win and hates losing.

“Mourinho makes his views clear to us after games,” he said. “If we win, he’s happy. If we don’t, he’s not. Hopefully, by Monday, we will put things right. We are playing well and we are doing a few things correctly.”

  • 5 biggest World Cup clashes

    5 biggest World Cup clashes

These are the matches that should make the opening round of the 2014 World Cup one of the greatest in history!

As KickOff.com explored in a recent editorial, a number of the groups can be considered Groups of Death, while each of Africa’s sides will have to face their battles – both internal and external – in order to progress.

This feature takes a look at the five biggest matches of the group stage, profiling the fixtures that will captivate the watching world, provide huge doses of drama and suspense, and generate a massive audience across the globe.

    Holland vs Spain

On June 13, Group B will commence with a match between 2010’s finalists, Spain and Holland. Never before have the two sides that contested the previous Final met in the first round of fixtures.

Considering the star names on show whenever these two sides meet, fans are likely to be in for something special. The recent history adds another dimension to the battle and, for the Dutch, provides an immediate opportunity for revenge.

Chile are also in this group and will be strong and unforgiving opponents, whichever side fails to win this opening battle will likely need to beat the Chileans to progress.

Similarly, whichever team loses the initiative here can at best hope, realistically, for second place in the Group Stage – that would mean a likely Last 16 tie with Brazil, the presumed winners of Group A. This is a fate that both sides would be keen to avoid.

    Italy vs England

England’s last foray to an international tournament ended with defeat to Italy, and the Three Lions will hope that their next sojourn doesn’t begin in a similar fashion.

Roy Hodgson’s men were defeated, on penalties, by the Azzuri at Euro 2012, and have an immediate opportunity to make amends in their opening Group D match.

The presence of Uruguay in the group means that neither of these two sides can afford to slip up in this opening fixture. The pair will have aspirations of making at least the quarter-finals, but revision might be necessary if things get off to a bad start.

For Hodgson, this battle will be the ultimate test to demonstrate how he has managed to improve the side since their capitulation at Euro 2012. The conditions in Manaus will surely favour Italy and their possession-based game though, so don’t be surprised to see England huff, puff and ultimately run out of steam.

    Germany vs Portugal

For everyone on the outside of the Group of Death, the contests between Germany, Portugal, Ghana and the United States should make for intriguing viewing.

For those on the inside, however, the draw could not have gone much worse and all four sides will already be plotting, intently, their means of survival.

The opening bout, between Portugal and Germany, ought to set the tone for the rest of the group. It is an elite international fixture between two of the world’s most star-studded sides, both of whom know they can ill-afford to get off to a bad start.

Portugal, in particular, know the perils of a disastrous opening match to a major tournament. They lost their first fixture on home soil at Euro 2004, did so again at Euro 2012, and struggled to get off the mark in 2010.

No finer example exists than their ugly campaign at the 2002 World Cup. They conceded three goals within 36 minutes against the United States in Suwon and never recovered.

The presence of Cristiano Ronaldo should ensure that things do not begin so perilously this time around.

    Nigeria vs Argentina

In Group F, Nigeria and Argentina will get the chance to revisit one of the world’s rare intercontinental rivalries. While few sides would relish the prospect of going toe-to-toe with Messi & co., the Super Eagles will have no fear heading into this bout.

The two have met three times before at a World Cup, in 1994, 2002 and 2010, while there is also an extensive history between them at Under-21 level and at the Olympics.

Nigeria’s record against the Albicelestes in these fixtures is, however, dire – they have been defeated on every occasion. Their other World Cup game against South American opposition also ended in defeat, against Paraguay in 1998.

Nigeria are a different prospect these days, however, and Africa’s champions will not be concerned about another battle with one of South America’s giants.

Ideally, for Stephen Keshi and his troops, the group will be settled by then and qualification will already be guaranteed ahead of that final clash with the Argentines.

If it is not, then the Super Eagles’ poor record against South Americans will need to improve … quickly!

    Germany vs Ghana

When Germany and Ghana meet on June 21 it will be a crucial fixture in the World Cup’s Group of Death, where every goal and every point won or lost will have a bearing on the end result.

It is a match that should have numerous sub-plots and a handful of interesting individual match-ups.

The two are not strangers and indeed have recent experience of mutual competition at the high table. In South Africa, at the 2010 World Cup, the pair were drawn in Group D and managed to escape from a tricky-looking group containing Australia and Serbia.

Both will be hoping for a similar return this time around, but will be aware that the United States and Portugal are tougher opponents than those they bested three years ago.

Their meeting in Brazil will be their second fixture in Group G, a win could put either side into the Last 16, while defeat could have the opposite effect – this will likely be an intense encounter.

It will also be personal, there is an extensive Ghanaian diaspora in Germany and a long history of Ghanaian players enjoying success in the Bundesliga. A number of the current squad have played (or play) in the German top flight.

The likely presence of both Boateng brothers will also add an extra level of intrigue to the fixture.

    ‘Mikel in trouble’

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says his side are in trouble after giving away a 1-0 lead to lose 3-2 at the Britania to Stoke City last Saturday.

“I don’t feel comfortable enough to tell you what I think about the game. We’re in trouble.

“It is a concern [conceding so many goals]. I don’t like it, I don’t organise my teams to be like this.” I could see that result happening because after half an hour we should have been winning three or four nil – and we weren’t.

Mourinho said as quoted on BBC Sports.

    Mikel boasts: Stoke must fall

Super Eagles and Chelsea midfielder, John Obi Mikel is confident the Blues will hold their own against Stoke in today’s Barclay’s Premier League clash at the Britannia.

The Nigeria international told the club’s official website that he was expecting a different approach by Stoke but was upbeat to play any role assigned to him by club’s gaffer, Jose Mourinho during the encounter.

“I think Stoke have been trying to do something different with their play but I think tomorrow (today) they are going to go back to the normal routine of playing longer balls and trying to pick up the second ball. If they try to play we’ve got good quality that can withstand that.

“They are definitely going to go with their strengths and we are ready for it. “Hopefully tomorrow (today) we are going to get a good result. It is difficult coming in when it’s getting tough for the team. But whenever the manager calls on me to start or come off the bench I’m always ready to do my job, help the team and make sure we win.’

    Mikel undergoes massage

Chelsea of England midfieder Mikel Obi, who is looking forward to an excellent outing on Saturday, was subjected to a massage session on Wednesday.

SportingLife gathered from close sources at the team’s Transcorp Hotel that the medical personnel took time in massaging the player’s legs and other parts of his body.

“They took their time with Mikel because he has to be fit for the match,’ said our source.

The source could however not confirm how long the massage lasted.

Mikel, who scored a wonderful goal against Uruguay at the Confederation Cup in Brazil, is one of the players chief Coach, Stephen Keshi will be banking on for success.
