  • Mikel out for rest of season

Super Eagles’ Skipper, Mikel Obi has been ruled out for the remainder of the Chinese Super League season after picking up a muscle injury in training, AOIFootball.com can authoritatively confirm.

The Tianjin midfielder, who missed his side’s weekend clash, also missed Wednesday’s game at home to Dalian Yifang, will miss Sunday’s final game of the season away at Guangzhou Evergrande with Tianjin hoping to escape relegation.

The injury will come as a big blow for Tianjin coach Uli Stielike who will no doubt miss the services of the experienced midfielder with Tianjin Teda desperately looking for a win having gone their last 11 matches without a win.

Mikel told AOIFootball.com exclusively that he believes his side will beat the drop despite their poor run of form.

“We are in a difficult situation right now. We know the importance of the remaining matches. I’m solidly behind the team and I believe the guys will do the job on the pitch and ensure we remain in the top flight,” Mikel said.

Mikel has featured in 18 league matches this season, scoring two goals and also set up another two. He has, however, had physical and fitness issues since returning from the World Cup and has been limited to just seven appearances compared to the 11 he featured in before the World Cup.

Tianjin is currently 15th on the 16 log table with 29 points from 28 points, level on points with Chongqing who currently occupy the 14th position on the table.

  • MIKEL OBI: OKOCHA, KANU SHAPED MY DESTINY

Super Eagles and Tianjin Teda captain, Mikel Obi, has a load of respect for two Nigerian living legends. They are former internationals Austin Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu.

Speaking exclusively since the World Cup in Russia in an interview conducted  by Kunle Solaja of the Sports Village Square, the midfielder singled out the Nigerian greats as those who inspired him as a teenage footballer.

While Kanu remains the most decorated Nigerian player as a two-time African player award-winner, Okocha’s skill and midfield command is second to none till date.

Mikel recounts: “As a young player, I drew so much inspiration from two of the best stars Nigeria ever produced. I grew up looking up to (Nwankwo) Kanu and (Austin) Jay Jay Okocha. I enjoyed watching them play for their respective club sides. More importantly, their exploits in the national team really thrilled me. In their later years, I played in the Super Eagles with them. They were highly motivating to me. But on the global stage, Zinedine Zidane was my all-time hero.”

Another player he has greater respect for is the Barcelona and Argentina forward, Lionel Messi – a five-time World Footballer of the Year award winner.

Mikel puts it this way: “There is no controversy. Lionel Messi is simply the greatest footballer to have ever played football. Across many competitions, I have been on the same pitch with him. I therefore know what I am saying.”

Mikel’s path has crossed that of Messi on more than one occasion. Twice they have met in the FIFA championships finals. First, at the World Youth Championships in 2005 and second, at the Olympics football final in 2008. On both occasions, Messi and Argentina had the better of Mikel and Nigeria.

In spite of the losses, Mikel remains Nigeria’s most decorated active footballer. He is in fact a legend having featured in all FIFA’s tiers of football – the U-17 in Finland 2003, the U-20 in the Netherlands 2005, FIFA World Cup in 2014 and 2018, FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013, Olympics in 2016 and FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea in 2012.

He has also been an Africa Cup of Nations winner with the Super Eagles in 2013 and winners in the UEFA Champions League (2011/12), UEFA Europa League in 2012/2013, as well as being winner in the English Premier League (2009/10, 2014/15), the English FA Cup in 2006/07, 2008/09 and 2011/12.

Going down memory lane, Mikel considers himself a good example of an average Nigerian youth who dares all odds to succeed.

“Youths are the future of any nation or country. They are the future scientists, future teachers, future doctors, future governors and presidents, as well as future farmers. My advice for them is to put God first, stay focused on your dreams, work hard and be a person of good character. Your name is the most important asset to you in life. Dreams do come true. I am an example of that. Never give up!

“I am also an ambitious person. I did not give myself any other choice but to be successful because I never stop pushing myself. For the youths, follow your dreams, don’t listen to people that tell you, you cannot make it, and when things are hard, pray harder, God will give you strength to go through it. Most importantly, hard work and good name.

“As for our leaders, it is for them to please continue to create better environments and opportunities for our youths.”

Noting that youths are tools for development in developed countries, Mikel calls on Nigerian youths to also show their hands in politics and other spheres of governance. “In every developed nation, the youths don’t merely take the back seat in decisions affecting their countries. They are active participants and help in shaping in their destinies. That perhaps explains why some of such countries now come out with very young leaders. France is an example. The Nigerian youths should take more than mere ‘sidon dey look’ attitude in our national affairs. They are the future and the future begins now. I am happy to learn that the president has signed the ‘Not too young to run’ bill. That means we are making progress. The youths who constitute the vast majority of our population must prepare to participate in lifting the country up.”

Mikel Obi further delves into history book, recalling the growing up in Jos, signing for Chelsea, venturing abroad, family life, social life and businesses. Excerpts:

    My humble beginning

I grew up with my parents and brothers in Jos, Plateau State. Growing up was ok, but like with most families, we were struggling financially. We were not in any way different from the others in our neighbourhood.

But we are a very contented and happy family. So when I realised at the age of nine that I loved football and I was good at it, I became determined to follow my dreams.

That was how I became a footballer and got invited into the youth team from where I have since grown to be a senior player in the national team.

Growing up in Jos may have also in a way helped in shaping my destiny. You will recall that the tin-rich city also produced some of the prominent Nigerian footballers, some of whom I only later heard about.

Segun Odegbami, I understand, also grew up in Jos and later became a sensational footballer internationally. The same with the Atuegbu brothers, Layiwola Olagbenro, Baba Otu Mohammed, Sam Garba Okoye, Peter Anieke, among others.

I am very close to my family back home and I come home regularly especially when the Super Eagles have international duties at home. I am home a few times a year. As I said earlier, I grew up in Jos even though my family and I hail from Anambra State in the East.

Being torn between Manchester United and Chelsea

My dad was a Manchester United supporter. He wanted me to join Sir Alex Ferguson. But Chelsea offered to sign me and three other friends who might not have gotten a club otherwise. For that reason, I decided to join Chelsea.Going abroad to play football, especially in Europe is not just a Nigerian mentality. It is so in many other African and South American countries. Europe offers the best in terms of facility and opportunities.

But the good thing is that the Nigerian league is also getting better with the partnership with some notable European leagues. All the same, going abroad gives young players better opportunity, better environment to train and focus and better facilities to also become world class.

Next year, in partnership with some stakeholders, we are starting a programme in Nigeria to give young aspirants an opportunity to go abroad and become professional footballers. It is called the “African Next Superstar”. We are in the process of packaging the event which details will be unfolded after the Africa Cup of Nations’ qualifier with Seychelles.

    Life outside football pitch

I love spending time with my family, my partner and my two daughters. I also enjoy working on my various business interests with my business team especially in the areas of manufacturing, and infrastructural development. You may be aware that I love Nigerian music a lot. Among my favourites are Tiwa Savage, P-Square and Banky W, among others. I am a very private person and usually don’t like to discuss my family on public domain. We are fine and all is well with us.

    On  dad’s kidnap

I really want to put the episode behind and we have since moved on. I am very patriotic. I love my country, Nigeria, even though I have lived in Europe for many years and now living in China. I love both abroad and Nigeria. However, after retirement, there’s no place like home.

    Taste for fashion

Everyone says am stylish. I just like wearing what looks good on me and what I feel comfortable in. It also helps to be tall and athletic, because everything fits well. My clothe types depend on the occasion. But it’s all about quality, and not quantity. Finally, I must say that we have some amazing designers in Nigeria, with fantastic ideas.

My leadership style with Super Eagles

I lead the team by example. To me, that’s very crucial. A good leader should always lead by example, and when we are losing, I inspire my team mates by making sure they keep their heads up and believe. However, my job as a leader in the team is easier because we have players that are hungry, focused and determined to be winners. Winners never give up. We have talented players.

    After China , what next?

Time will tell. I am enjoying my time in China. It is a great country to live and work and I want to continue playing for another four to five years. I will like to retire back in the premier league in a few years’ time, but we will see what comes.

    Clarion call to political leaders

The great thing about democracy is that everyone has a voice and everyone can contribute to changes in our country by voting. I encourage every youth that can vote, to get their PVC and vote. To make their vote count so they can have a say in their own future. As I said, they are the future.

    Life after retirement

I have several business interests and I have surrounded myself with a team of good business professionals. We are growing partnerships with manufacturers, brands, and tech. I can also say that Nigeria is a place with enormous opportunities and great business leaders, from industries to banking, to oil and gas. Nigeria is the biggest and fastest growing economy in Africa; there are so many great opportunities for investment and growth economically. I have various investments in Nigeria and my team and I are looking into other parts of Africa too. I have a great business team around me and things are going well, thank God.

    Youth empowerment

Yes, we have several programmes we are working on to contribute to every other efforts going on in the country by others and the government. Our first programme launches in January and it relates to football and other programmes shall follow shortly after.

    Between  Michael and Mikel

Yes. My real name is John Michael Obi. At a tournament, it was miss-spelt and I have since been living with it without any regret. I did not notice it in the first place because my desire to represent Nigeria at international competition was uppermost in my mind. It was in 2003 as we prepared for the FIFA U-17 in Finland. All I did was to consult with my dad and he did not see anything wrong in my adopting the name, Mikel.

  • Mikel pulls out of Sept.7 Seychelles tie

Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has pulled out of the September 7 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers between Seychelles and Nigeria in Victoria.

NationSport scooped that Mikel called up the team’s manager Gernot Rohr to excuse himself from the crucial game, citing the fact that he had not fully regained the required fitness level needed to play the game. Mikel also informed the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, to disclose his reasons for opting out of the Seychelles game.

Mikel joins the long list of injury-hit players such as Tyronne Ebuehi and Shehu Abdullahi, both of who play at the right back of the Eagles’ defence line, especially at the 2018 World Cup held in Russia, where Nigeria was eliminated in the group stage.

Former captain of the Nigeria U-17 and U-20 team Musa Muhammed has been invited to replace Ebuehi and Abdullahi. Abdullahi now plays for Croatian side HNK Gorica.

Asked if Victor Moses will be listed among those to make the trip to Victoria against Seychelles on September 7, NationSport’s usually dependable source revealed that the body and the manager have agreed to respect Moses’ decision, but he didn’t rule out moves to sit with the Chelsea star to evaluate why he chose to quit international football at such a young age of 27.

  • ‘Mikel is going nowhere’

Tianjin Teda’s German coach Uli Stielike has dismissed any chance of John Mikel Obi leaving before the expiration of his contract at the end of this season, but he admitted that the former Chelsea midfielder lost his place in his Tianjin-based side’s starting line-up after recovering from a knee injury.

Though the German ex-international rubbished speculation linking Mikel with a transfer from the Chinese Super League club this summer Stielike admitted that the Eagles’ star’s chances of starting matches this season depends on the club’s new Brazilian star Jonathan.

Stielike stated: “I don’t know about this news, and I am not interested. We only want to focus on this year’s league. As for whether Mikel will play, it depends on whether Jonathan can recover.”

Stielike has also been constrained by CLS rules on foreign player quotas for each match, such that he picked Ghana’s Acheampong and German ace, Bastians alongside Jonathan as the three foreigners in the squad.

That decision left Mikel out, only for the Eagles star, who did not feature in six matches since the Chinese Super League resumed after the World Cup, to return for last Saturday’s match against Jiangsu Suning.

  • Mikel missing again in Tianjin’s win

Super Eagles’ captain, Mikel John Obi was again missing for the fourth consecutive Chinese Super League match as Tianjin Teda recovered from a goal down to beat Hebei China Fortune 2-1 away from home, AOIFootball.com reports.

The Tianjin midfielder has been suffering from a knee injury which has kept him out for two weeks but was, however, hopeful of featuring against Hebei.

His absence will now send worrying signals to Gernot Rohr ahead of next month’s qualifier against Seychelles.

Goals from Frank Acheampong and Xie Weijun cancelled out Ayoub El Kaabi’s opener as Teda boosted their chances of a top half finish, moving up the table to 8th, with 21 points after 16 games.

Mikel has been a super regular for the Chinese side but will hope to return in the coming weeks as Teda hopes to build on their impressive form of late which has seen them win two of their last three fixtures.

  • Mikel thanks Police for father’s rescue

Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi has expressed his gratitude to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for their role in rescuing his father who was kidnapped.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mikel revealed after the 2018 FIFA World Cup that his father was abducted before Nigeria’s last group stage match against Argentina in Saint Petersburg.

The Enugu State Police Command on Tuesday however confirmed in a statement on their official Twitter account that Pa Michael Obi had been rescued from the kidnappers.

The statement said he was kidnapped along Markurdi – Enugu expressway, adding that the kidnappers allegedly demanded N10 million as ransom from Obi’s family.

“Michael Obi, the father of Eagles captain, has regained his freedom,” Enugu Police command spokesman Ebere Amaraizu said.

“He was rescued a forest in the Udi area of Enugu after a gun battle between the police and the kidnappers, who escaped during the shootout.

“He is right now in the office of the Enugu State police commissioner,”police said.

Mikel thanked the NPF for their assistance through a message on his official Twitter account on Wednesday which said,

“I would like to thank the Police authorities involved in ensuring the safe return of my father after the ordeal this week.

“I will also like to thank everyone for their kind words of support. He is now recuperating with family. My family and I are grateful.”

NAN also reports that Mikel’s father was previously kidnapped in 2011 and was also rescued by the police force during a raid. (NAN)

  • The future will determine my stay in Eagles’ camp – Mikel

Mikel Obi, Super Eagle’s Captain has said that his further stay in the national team would be determined by future realities.

Mikel, who agreed that the team had a disappointing outing against Argentina in the last group D match at St. Petersburg Stadium on Tuesday, disclosed this at a post match conference.

‘‘My continued stay in the Super Eagles will be determined by future realities, but I love the team.

“It is very young, disciplined and supportive,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Nigeria failed to advance into the second round courtesy of a 1-2 loss to the Argentines in the last group match played at St. Petersburg stadium.

Speaking on whether he would be available for Nigeria’s outings in the next African Cup of Nations, Mikel said: “We should wait for the Eagles to qualify first.’’

‘‘I hope I can still be around but that will depend on if the team qualify,’’ he said.

On his assessment of the team’s performance in the match, Mikel said: “It was a day we did everything we could but failed to qualify.

‘‘In second half, we played well but luck was not on our side. It is a young team and we will be back in four years’ time.’’

Talking of the welfare situation and administration of the team under him, Mikel said everything was wonderful and exciting.

‘‘We have everything going well for us, the team was fantastic and friendly and the football authorities treated us well.

‘‘Most especially, our travel arrangements were superb and I have never experienced it before,’’ the Eagles’ captain said.

  • Mikel: referee admitted ball touched Argentina defender’s hand

Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi said last night Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakin accepted that the ball struck the hand of Argentina’s defender Marcus Rojo in the 82nd minute, but refused to award a penalty.

The penalty, if awarded and scored at a time the match was 1-1, could have wrapped up a second round ticket for the Eagles.

Speaking at the post match briefing in St Petersburg, Mikel said: “I asked the referee if he thought the ball struck Rojo’s hand and he said ‘yes;. The refeee told me that the ball came off Rojo’s head before it hit his hand.”

Mikel added:” I then asked Cakur why he didn’t award the penalty to Nigeria, he said: ‘ I don’t know.’ That was sad because we checked the match video in the dressing room and it was a clear penalty kick.

“When the ball touches your hand in the penalty box, it’s a penalty. No two ways about that. Maybe he didn’t want to give us the second penalty. It is sad we had to exit the competition this way.

The same referee was inconsistent. Twenty four hours earlier in the same circumstances, he gave a panelty to Iran against Portugal.

Yesterday’s match ended 2-1 in favour of Argentina.

Nigerians had looked forward hopefully that Eagles would get a draw to move to the second round.

However, the Eagles failed to defend well in the crucial moments of the game. They were on the defensive most of the second half.

Lionel Messi struck early before the Victor Moses equaliser in the 51st minute via a well taken penalty. Messi’s goal was fantastic.  He collected a diagonal pass from Ever Banega with his thigh, dragging the ball into position before hitting it beyond the reach of Francis Uzoho.

It could have been a brace for Messi, but 19-year-old Nigerian goalkeeper Uzoho pushed the Argentine’s terrific free kick off the far post.

Wilfred Ndidi blazed a shot over the bar in the 71st minute as Nigeria looked to put an end to all doubt.

Odion Ighalo also had two glorious chances to put Nigeria ahead but The China-based striker fluffed them to the dismay of Nigerians.

Speaking about his future with the national team, Mikel said he would be most delighted to lead the boys going further into the future.

I’m happy playing with this bunch of players. I expect them to grow into a great side and I think this team would make a good imression in the next four years. They are good boys with bright future,” he said.’Of course, we did everything we could; we pushed and pushed to get the goal but it was to be.

“We want to thank all Nigerians for their support; and we have to keep going.”

  • Mikel ready to play in any position — Rohr

Super Eagles’ Captain, John Mikel Obi at a press conference in Essentukiia yesterday, said that he was ready to play in any position his Head Coach Gernot Rohr drafts him to play from, in the make or mar second match of group D against Argentina in the ongoing Russia 2018 World Cup.

He sounded confident as regards playing as both offensive midfielder and defensive midfielder, which his former Coach at Chelsea José Mourinho preferred him to operate for the Eagles like he did  while playing under him at Chelsea.

“I have worked with Mourinho for a long time and he knows me very well.

” I have played in this advanced role for close to two years now and people never complained until we lost this game.

“I understand the feelings of everyone because of the result and how we played.

Personally, I am ready to play anywhere the coach wants me to play.

” I am comfortable with any of the roles, whether in a more offensive or defensive role. The most important thing is the team.

The Eagles’ Captain is confident ahead of the showdown against Iceland, as he confessed that he would like his team to stay long in the competition.

“I have not given up hope inspite of the disappointment of that loss.

We are training hard to make it out of the group.

Hopefully things will work out for us on Friday.

“We have enjoyed Russia so far. We have been able to work and train well. The training facilities, hotel and the people have been great.

We hope to qualify and stay longer here so we can get to know more places in Russia”, he disclosed.

  • Mikel did his best, says Russian Wife

The Wife of Super Eagles Captain, Mikel Obi has reacted to Nigeria’s 0-2 loss to Croatia in their opening game of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

According to the Russian beauty queen, Olga Diyachenko, Mikel played his best before he was substituted by Coach Gernot Rohr in the second half of the match on Friday.

Olga Diyachenko refused to sulk on the team’s loss; rather she consoled and encouraged her husband for the disappointing start of the tournament.

“You win some, you lose some my love… you are always a winner in my eyes. Love you. Go Nigeria,” she wrote on her Instagram page.

Eagles’ next match is against Iceland at the Volgograd Arena on Friday.
