    Mikel blasts Mourinho again

Nigeria midfielder, Mikel Obi has again thrown jibes at former Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho, saying the London club’s dressing room is a lot more relaxed because caretaker manager, Guus Hiddink minds his own business.

Mikel mostly warmed the bench during Mourinho’s second coming, but he has been a lot more regular under Hiddink.

“From day one, since Guus has come in, the atmosphere has changed. The players feel more relaxed, people know what their jobs are and people are getting on with their jobs in a more relaxed way. And a way they can perform very well,’ the 29-year-old Mikel said.

“He has given responsibility to people and expects them to thrive on it and make sure they do it in a way where they feel comfortable. I think that is what the players are showing now.

“When you come into the training ground, the players are more relaxed, he doesn’t get into people’s business, he gets on with his own thing and players feel very comfortable and know exactly what to do so when he gets on the training pitch, he doesn’t need to speak. We all know what he wants and it is the same when we go into a game.”

The Nigeria star said like most of the Chelsea players he will want Dutchman Hiddink to stay beyond this season.

“I want him to stay. It is the choice of the owner, the club and the board. They will have to decide. But if you speak to the players, 98 or 99 per cent of them want him to stay so I mean, we are very happy, we are performing well and let’s hope this continues.

“It depends on the board and it depends on Guus if he wants to continue. He has said that he is here until the end of the season but you never know, he might change his mind. If the club want to appoit him fair enough. His record speaks for itself,”Mikel said.

  • No new Chelsea deal for Mikel

No new Chelsea deal for Mikel

A representative of  John Obi Mikel has cleared the air on suggestions that the Super Eagles star is in talks with Chelsea over a new deal.

The defensive midfielder is enjoying a new lease of life under manager Guus Hiddink leading to speculation by the Daily Mirror that he is set to be offered a new contract.

But there is no word from the Stamford Bridge suits if Mikel’s contract which expires at the end of next season would be renewed.

“Chelsea have not yet offered Mikel a new deal,” Mikel’s rep briefly told allnigeriasoccer.com.

John Obi Mikel would have turned 30 by the time his contract with the Londoners expires in the summer of 2016 and the English Premier League champs have a policy of offering only one – year deals to players over the age of 30.

The former Lyn Oslo starlet has played nonstop at Chelsea for 10  years.

    • Vows to play Chelsea star in defensive midfield

Nigeria coach,  Sunday Oliseh has said he expects Chelsea star, Mikel Obi to play in a role that will give the Super Eagles results, revealing further he would prefer to play the midfielder in a defensive position, like Chelsea does.

Oliseh’s predecessor, Stephen Keshi played the Chelsea star mostly as a free player  and that freed him to join the attack more often.

It was also the same role he played when he broke out internationally under coach Samson Siasia at the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup in the Netherlands.

“With the national team, it’s not what you want that matters, it is what will bring us results. If you don’t want to do that, I will play players who want to help us, like I did against Swaziland,”said Oliseh during  a radio interview.

In October, Oliseh dropped Mikel to the bench for all 90 minutes when the Eagles hosted Swaziland in a 2018 World Cup qualifier in Port Harcourt.

The Eagles coach maintained Mikel is best as a central defensive midfielder.

“My personal opinion is that he should be given a more central defensive role, like (Guus) Hiddink is using him. He should be the umbrella for the two central defenders,” Oliseh said.

  • Mikel: Away goal at PSG vital

Mikel: Away goal at PSG vital

John Obi Mikel believes his first half strike will prove priceless in Chelsea’s Champions League last-16 second leg clash against PSG.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the scoring for the hosts before Mikel levelled right on half-time but Laurent Blanc’s side piled on the pressure and were rewarded late on with Edinson Cavani’s winner.

“My goal is a big one. I think it’s going to prove a big goal hopefully. It will be a goal that will keep us in the tie and hopefully it will put us through in the tie. If we get one nil back home, we will be through. I think we are still alive,” Mikel told Chelsea TV.

However, the Super Eagles star feels his team did well and deserved at least a draw from the Parc des Princes.

“We came out here to play the game of football and we’ve done that. I think we put on a very good performance,” he continued.

“We defended when we had to and played when we had to. It was a very difficult game but it was one that we did well. It was a fair result but I think we deserve more. We deserve a draw or win the game.

“It’s our first loss under the new manager but we’re not out of the tie yet, we’ve still got the second leg to play and hopefully we can build on the goal we have. When we play at home we need to make sure we get a good result and go through,” he concluded.

  • Ayew beats Mikel

    Ayew beats Mikel

Struggling Aston Villa’s Jordan Ayew has been named African Player of the Month of January in the English Premier League, beating off the challenge of Mikel Obi (Chelsea) and Cheikhou Kouyate (West Ham).

Organisers New African Soccer put out the release, stating that Ayew was given the award by an overwhelming vote in his favour, but also by their assessment.

The Awards Director ‘Tunde Adelakun who signed the release said: “Jordan Ayew has really put in a good shift in the games that Aston Villa played in the month of January, and although they are really struggling to get results as a club, one cannot but notice and appreciate the desire and ability shown by the youngster in the course of the month.”

Jordan Ayew played in three of the four matches Villa played in an encouraging January which saw them win one, draw two and lose one game; and that included a man-of-the-match performance at West Brom.

Chinese club offer Mikel £60,000 a week deal

Nigeria international Mikel Obi is reported to be attracting interest from Chinese Super League club, Shanghal SIPG who are ready to pay him £60,000 weekly after tax.

Mikel earns like £80,000 a week at Chelsea, and is before tax.

According to the Daily Mail, the Chinese club managed by former England manager, Sven Goran Eriksson, have tabled a bid to that effect.

The 28-year-old Nigerian joined Chelsea in 2006 from Lyn Oslo for a fee of £16 million.

The Nigeria international has won two Premier League trophies, four FA Cups, two League Cups, a Europa League and a Champions League. Furthermore, he was a key player in Nigeria’s successful 2013 African Cup of Nations side.

If this deal sails through, he will join Ghana skipper Asamoah Gyang at the club.

Efe Ambrose was also linked to this club but the Celtic defender said there have been no offers from the club for him.

•Fourth round draw to be held today

Nigerian international Mikel  Obi was rested by manager Guus Hiddink in the FA Cup Third round win against English League One side Scunthorpe United yesterday at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues continued their resurgence under the Dutch caretaker manager with a comfortable 2-0 victory but Mikel who has been a mainstay for the former UEFA Champions League winners was given a deserved rest after featuring in all Hiddink’s three previous games.

The former Lyn Oslo midfielder watched from the bench as Spaniard Diego Costa escaped Scott Laird and impressively directed Branislva Ivanovic’s cross past Luke Daniels in goal for the visitors inside the first 13 minutes.

It did not turn out a whitewash as expected as the Blues waited until the second half to double their lead courtesy of substitute Ruben Loftus-Cheek who blasted a shot past the keeper after receiving a pass from Cesar Azpilicueta.

Chelsea won the game 2-0 and will now await the fourth round draw which will be held this evening.

  • The return of Mikel

    The return of Mikel

I enjoy watching weekend European matches at viewing centres. I always sneak in to feel the pulse of the fans – spread across the European teams. Since the league began last year, fans of Stamford Bridge in Nigeria have been mute. They have been pinching themselves to find out why Chelsea, last year winners of the Barclays English Premier League’s diadem, are languishing in the relegation zone.

Not even the sack of the Special One, Jose Mourinho, has convinced them about the new dawn which many predicted will solve the squad’s problems. In fact, fans of other teams scorn Chelsea for winning one game per month. Such taunts enliven viewing centres weekly. Sadly, the boisterous Blues’ fans watch in confusion.  Chelsea fans had been expectant but it was taking quite a while and many tore their Chelsea shirts in support of Mourinho. Others have burnt theirs, with a senior colleague, Olu Ayela, swearing never to talk about Chelsea.

His reason – they sacked the Special One. Ayela doesn’t think Mourinho is Chelsea’s problem. Rather, he says, it is the players’ mutiny against the coach, to whom, in Ayela’s opinion, they owe their stardom. To Ayela, nothing good can come from Chelsea, following Mourinho’s sack. I have not seen Ayela since Chelsea’s resurgence against Crystal Palace on Sunday. But his reaction won’t be anything different from others’ in his camp – those sitting on the fence waiting for this new dawn to shout ‘we are back!’

Mourinho’s sack has adversely affected the number of fans still rooting for the Blues. Many have sworn not to support any team until Mourinho handles another team. Such was the muted silence at this viewing centre in Akowonjo, Lagos, Sunday that I initially thought that Chelsea had no fans. The early goal scored by Oscar brought out bated noise but when Costa tapped in Chelsea’s third, the roof of the viewing centre almost caved in.

“We are back. The champions are back. Bring on Barcelona. Chelsea can massacre any team. Thank you, Jose Mourinho. You did your best. We are returning to winning ways.” These boastful words rent the air, showing clearly that the fans enjoyed what they saw.

Surprisingly, amid their celebrations, the fans reckoned with John Mikel Obi’s sterling performance. On this score, the views were divergent. Those on either side raised their voices to make their points. I was impressed. I was educated. I celebrated because Nigerians know how to celebrate their own.

For me, it is as if Mikel changed club, even though he is still in Chelsea. The return of Gus Hiddink meant a likely regular shirt for the Nigerian. The Dutch believes in Mikel’s talents since he set his eyes on the Nigerian in his first rescue mission at Stamford Bridge.

Is Hiddink a better manager than Mourinho, using Mikel as the litmus test? I’m tempted to say yes because it isn’t the first time that Hiddink’s return to Chelsea has changed Mikel’s fortune. Mourinho’s love for black players makes it difficult for me to tag him a racist. But, Mourinho’s sparing use of Mikel gave the impression that the Nigerian wasn’t improving in training. I don’t see anything Hiddink has done to Mikel other than playing him in a role that fits his game. And if Mikel keeps this form till the end of the season, he could get a mouth-watering Chelsea deal- rightly deserved.

Hiddink’s remarks on Mikel underscore his qualities, which Mourinho has denied followers of the game. Mourinho would be pinching himself, wondering how he missed getting the Nigerian to play his heart out for him. ++A few times, Mourinho lavished praises on Mikel. But most times, he ended up not fielding the Nigerian in the next game, offering all manner of technical jargons to justify Mikel’s exclusion.

Many of us fell for Mourinho’s tactical explanation, with a few, like this writer, suggesting that Mikel moves out of Chelsea. I trusted Mourinho’s judgment and feel sour now that the Portuguese, after all, is human and prone to mistakes. Thank you, Hiddink for resurrecting Mikel’s career.

My silent prayer is for Hiddink to remain in Chelsea next year. Hiddink knows how to field Mikel. And if the Nigerian keeps this form, then Nigeria could win the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, like she did on February 10, 2013 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

    Gambo for Vietnam? No.

I’m very angry over arguments being made by an unnamed agent justifying why Kano Pillars’ Mohammed Gambo should play his soccer in Vietnam.

The claim that it was Gambo’s second visit to Vietnam is, to say the least, ridiculous. Where is Vietnam in FIFA ranking? What is Vietnam’s league ranking? It is only in Nigeria that anyone can take a player to Vietnam without thinking about his career.

Sadly, Kano Pillars, which should protect the future of their prized striker, are blaming him

  • Chelsea fans tip Mikel for Ballon d’Or

Chelsea fans tip Mikel for Ballon d’Or

Chelsea maestro and Super Eagles defensive midfielder, John Obi Mikel is enjoying a bit of a renaissance at Chelsea. The midfielder has been with the Blues for years but came close to leaving in the summer, with Jose Mourinho refusing to give him regular game time.

That’s changed under Guus Hiddink, and with Mikel avoiding being part of the alleged Mourinho revolt, he’s kept fans on his side.

And they tipped the Nigerian to win the Ballon d’Or after a strong showing in the 3-0 win over Crystal Palace – that shifted Chelsea to 14th on the EPL log with 23points from 20 games. Mikel, who has now had 418 minutes playing time, is expected to star again in the Blues FA Cup home game against Scunthorpe United.

Mikel REVEALS: Mourinho is a fantastic manager

Super Eagles star Obi Mikel has commented on the dismissal of former coach of Chelsea, Jose Mourinho, and the appointment of Guus Hiddink as his replacement.

The Portuguese manager was sacked following a dismal run of results, with the defeat to Leicester City, his last game in charge of the Stamford Bridge side.

“Jose is a fantastic manager and always will be, he’s a fantastic guy but sometimes football is a cruel game and we have to move on, ” Mikel told chelseafc.com.

“He (Hiddink) was here before and he knows the place. There are different players but it’s the same staff; it’s only me, JT and Ivanovic from when he was here last time, but he knows what to do so we just have to take it step by step.”

Mikel has been involved in Hiddink’s first two matches since his return to the Londoners, lasting the distance against Manchester United on Monday.
