Millwall goalkeeper Sarkic dies aged 26

Millwall goalkeeper Matija Sarkic has died at the age of 26.

Sarkic, a Montenegro international, joined the Championship club from Wolves in August 2023 and made 33 appearances last season.

He last played for his country in a 2-0 friendly defeat by Belgium on 5 June.

The Montenegro Football Association (FSCG) said Sarkic died suddenly on Saturday morning, with local media reporting he collapsed at his apartment in Budva.

The FSCG described Sarkic as a “beloved member” of the national squad and an “eternally smiling guy”.

“His untimely death has caused great pain to the Sarkic family,” it added.

Millwall said they were “completely devastated”.

“Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends at this immensely sad time,” the Lions said.

Sarkic, who was born in Grimsby, played youth-team football for Belgian side Anderlecht before joining Aston Villa.

He had loan spells with Wigan, Stratford Town, Havant & Waterlooville and Livingston before a permanent move to Wolves in 2020.

Villa said on X: “Everyone at Aston Villa is deeply saddened.

“Matija joined our academy in 2015 and spent five years with the club, during which time he made his full international debut for Montenegro, before departing in the summer of 2020.

“The thoughts and condolences of all at the club are with his family and friends at this incredibly sad time.”

The Football Association, the Professional Footballers’ Association and the English Football League also offered their condolences to Sarkic’s family and friends.

    Kane suffers angle ligament damage

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has suffered ligament damage to his right ankle.

However, the injury is not thought to be as severe as the injury which sidelined him for seven weeks earlier this season.

The England international was replaced after seven minutes of Sunday’s 6-0 FA Cup quarter-final win over Millwall.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that he was hurt when defender Jake Cooper blocked his shot close to the byeline.

Spurs said the injury is similar to the one Kane picked up against Sunderland on Sept. 18.

    Millwall trashed with Shittu absent

Bournemouth staged a spectacular comeback to beat 10-man Millwall, in the absence of Millwall skipper, Danny Shittu.

Martyn Waghorn put Millwall ahead with a low shot and set up Liam Trotter to make it 2-0 to the visitors after only 10 minutes.

Then the Cherries hit back as Ryan Fraser curled in just two minutes before the break.

Then Steve Cook headed in Ian Harte’s corner on 50 minutes and Harry Arter put them ahead from distance just five minutes later.

Millwall’s Alan Dunne saw red and Lewis Grabban scored from the spot on 59 minutes, to complete a torrid 16 minutes for the visitors.

Then, substitute Brett Pitman hit a late fifth from another penalty, to complete the humiliation of the Lions.

  • Millwall game my best- Aluko

    Millwall game my best- Aluko

The 2012/13 season will go down as one of the most memorable in Hull City’s history after automatic promotion to the Barclays Premier League was secured.

Picking out one game that stands out above all the rest isn’t an easy task, but we’re giving several squad members the opportunity to do just that.

Sone Aluko is the latest to attempt it. Unfortunately, he broke the rules straightaway!

“I’ve got two if that’s ok?

“Firstly I would pick out the opening 45 minutes against Millwall back in September. In terms of the football we played, that was one of the best games I’ve ever played in and we totally dominated it.

“We were 4-0 up by half time and I managed to score as well. A lot of fans said it was the best 45 minutes they have ever seen from Hull City and that is a big compliment.

“As players out there on the pitch, we could sense that the performance was something special and it was always going to be hard to recreate that again.

“It was great to be a part of that performance. When the momentum goes with you like that, it’s hard for the opposition to stop. We were playing football in the way we wanted to and that was a special day.

“I would also have to say the game against Leeds at the KC was right up there. The atmosphere was incredible and we played some really fluent football.

“When we played well, we really blew teams away and everything clicked for us again that day.

“I’ve had good fortune in my career when it comes to local derbies and that has continued here with us taking six points from Leeds.

“The fans love it – there are games they look out for. It was great to beat Leeds home and away, but I thought the home performance was particularly good.”

NFF set to report Newcastle, Millwall to FIFA

NIGERIA Football Federation are now set to formally report English clubs Newcastle and Millwall to FIFA.

Both clubs seem intent on holding onto Shola Ameobi and Danny Shittu for Nigeria’s preparation for the forthcoming African Nations Cup in South Africa.

Both clubs, through their coaches – Alan Pardew and Danny Jackett – stated last week that the players will not be part of Nigeria’s campaign in the championship billed to commence on January 19 but NFF 1st Vice President Mike Umeh said they will be reporting the case to FIFA should it be the plan of the clubs.

“We are waiting for what will happen in the next few days as we expect the players to be part of the team whenever their colleagues are arriving the camp in Portugal But if their clubs show signs of not releasing them for Nigera, we have no choice than to report them to FIFA which we are set to do.

“We have the right to call up these players and they have not told us that they will not be coming for the championship. Even if they don’t want to come, we have the right to stop them from playing for their clubs within the period of the tournament but we won’t gain anything from that and the best thing is for the clubs to release them for us.

He added: “Every player that the coach has listed for the tournament is important and we won’t allow any club to derail our plans.”
