Mimiko calls for stronger laws to reduce maternal mortality, protect women’s rights

Former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has urged the federal government to enact stronger laws and policies to curb preventable maternal deaths, describing maternal mortality as a violation of human rights.

Delivering the keynote address at the 2025 International Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA) Week in Akure, Mimiko stressed the need for civil society and non-governmental organisations to hold governments accountable in translating policies into concrete actions that protect women.

Speaking on the theme, “Turning Policy to Action: Advancing Women’s Rights through Law and Governance,” he underscored the importance of judicial and social activism, referencing global trends in the enforcement of economic, social, and cultural rights, including health.

Mimiko also condemned the practice of detaining women or newborns over unpaid medical bills and reiterated that Nigeria must domesticate international covenants such as CEDAW and the Maputo Protocol to ensure effective legal enforcement.

“The global trend in many jurisdictions, even those like Nigeria without explicit provisions, is a jurisprudential shift towards justiciability of Economic, Social, and Cultural (ESC) rights, including health.

“The death of our women while trying to bring forth life in childbirth or the outrageous practice of holding them or their newborn babies as ‘collateral’ for unsettled medical bills must be ended,” the former governor said.

While acknowledging some progress, he noted gaps in implementation, including seven states yet to adopt the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 (VAPP Act), and urged support for targeted legislation like the Reserved Seats for Women Bill.

He praised Rwanda’s strides in women’s parliamentary representation, urging Nigeria to follow suit.

Mimiko also raised the alarm over rising sexual and gender-based violence, calling it a “pandemic within a pandemic” and advocating for timely prosecution, stiffer penalties, victim compensation, and a publicly accessible sex-offenders register.

He called on FIDA to champion strategic litigation on women’s rights, including maternal mortality and SGBV cases, stating, “Policy must become action, and action must deliver justice and dignity for every woman and girl.”

Remarking, the state chairperson of FIDA, Barrister Bolanle Olafunmiloye, echoed the call for increased female participation in leadership, urging women to confront corruption, drug abuse, and moral decay in society.

Also, a FIDA member and former presidential aspirant of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) highlighted the transformative role of women lawyers in leadership positions both locally and globally.

JUST IN: Mimiko denies leading Jonathan’s 2027 presidential consultation in southwest

Former Ondo State governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has dismissed a report alleging that he has been appointed to lead the Southwest consultation team for former President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The report, published by a national daily, not The Nation, claimed that Mimiko was chosen to head consultations in preparation for a possible political comeback by Jonathan and that the recommendation came from former Osun State governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola.

While Jonathan has not publicly declared any intention to contest in 2027, speculation has been mounting about his possible return to Aso Rock after losing his re-election bid to the late President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

However, in a statement issued on Monday through his spokesperson, Mr. Eniola Akinsola, and obtained by The Nation, Mimiko described the publication as “falsehood” and “a concocted rumour dressed in news.”

“The falsehood in the report is obvious from the get-go. It is just the work of a journalist flying with concocted rumour dressed as news,” the statement read.

“The Mimiko that I know respects former President Jonathan but has neither been reached nor appointed for a campaign that is still the subject — and may well end as a subject — of fanciful speculation. I am sure he is also not job-hunting,” Akinsola added.

The statement further noted that as the 2027 elections draw closer, politically motivated stories of this nature are likely to emerge, especially about figures like Mimiko who have “chosen to remain low for now.”

Last week, former Minister of Information and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Prof. Jerry Gana, had stirred controversy after declaring that Jonathan would contest the 2027 election, saying Nigerians were yearning for his return.

“I can confirm that Goodluck Ebele Jonathan will contest the presidential election in 2027 as PDP candidate, and we should be prepared to vote for him to return as president again,” he said.

But in a swift reaction, presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, dismissed Gana’s claim as “an absurdity.”

“However, we should caution former president Jonathan to be wary of the PDP sugar-coated cheerleaders. Politicians of Jerry Gana’s ilk merely want to lure him into the race to satisfy their personal, political, religious, and ethnic interests. They will abandon him midstream, as they did in 2015, and leave Gentleman Jonathan in the lurch,” Onanuga warned.

Tinubu’s health policies can curb brain drain — Ex-Ondo governor Mimiko

Former Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has said that the health sector reforms initiated by the administration of President Bola Tinubu have the potential to address Nigeria’s persistent brain drain—if adequately funded and properly implemented.

Mimiko made the remark while delivering a lecture at an event in Akure on Tuesday to celebrate the 81st birthday of Senator Bode Olajumoke. The event was organised by the Bode Olajumoke Education and Hospitality Initiative (BOEHI).

Presenting a paper titled: “Conqueror, Conquered and Consequences: A Discourse on Brain Drain,” Mimiko described the “Medical Health Revamp – System-wide Reform Anchored on Increased Funding” policy as a commendable step in halting the mass emigration of medical professionals from Nigeria.

He noted that the proposed 15% budgetary allocation to the health sector marks a significant improvement from the historical maximum of 5%, and praised the 2023 National Policy on Health Workforce Migration as a timely intervention.

“To fully tackle brain drain, Africa must realise it has moved from involuntary to voluntary conquest. The way forward is for our leaders to create enabling environments that retain our best brains for national development,” he said.

While acknowledging some benefits of emigration such as skill transfer and technological advancement, Mimiko warned that the gains are being undermined by illicit financial flows and weakened local systems.

Speaking at the event, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Olayide Adelami, commended Senator Olajumoke’s commitment to human welfare and praised Mimiko’s lecture for addressing the urgent issue of talent retention.

The governor also pledged the state’s support for BOEHI’s initiatives aimed at improving education and healthcare access.

Chairman of the occasion and former Chief of Staff to late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, Chief Olugbenga Ale, applauded the choice of topic and speaker, while the celebrant, Senator Olajumoke, expressed gratitude to God for life and pledged to continue impacting lives.

Makinde, who delved into politics at the event, said there was need to give youths more opportunities to participate in leadership and governance.

The Governor passionately called for national rebirth, urging Nigerians to move out of their comfort zones and work actively toward nation-building.

Makinde lamented the trend of perpetual transition from one crisis to another, noting that without sincere engagement from the citizenry in politics and governance, the cycle would continue.

Mimiko called for urgent restructuring of Nigeria, warning that the current political structure is a stumbling block to national progress.

Ozekhome, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), in his keynote address titled: “Nigeria: From where comes our help?” decried rampant insecurity, corruption and governance failures in the country.

He commended Makinde’s leadership, particularly his security interventions such as the establishment of the Amotekun Corps, which has contributed significantly to protecting lives and property in Oyo State.

Aransiola expressed gratitude to God and the people for celebrating him and wife, adding the occasion is a testament to God’s faithfulness in their lives and ministry.

The Chairman of the 70/70/50 programme and Resident Pastor, Chapel of Life of the Gethsemane Prayer Ministries International, Eleyele, Ibadan, Pastor Adebayo Owoseni described the occasion as a huge success, adding that the celebrants deserve the honor owing to their contributions to humanity and the body of Christ.

Ondo 2024: Mimiko’s brother emerges ZLP candidate

The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has picked a medical doctor, Abbas Mimiko, as its candidate for the November governorship election in Ondo state.

Abbas, a younger brother to a former Ondo governor, Olusegun Mimiko, emerged candidate through affirmation, in the primary held at the state party secretariat, Akure, the state capital.

Mimiko promised to focus on education, health, the economy, and security if elected governor.

He said the former governor was in support of his aspiration.

He said: “We are forced to be reckoned with in this election. We will ensure food security. Within a year of our being in office, we will have a surplus of food in Ondo state. We will ensure affordable quality education, industrialisation housing, and free health services for all residents are part of our programmes.

“Let me remind us however that the days ahead will be even more demanding and disturbing. The signs of what we should expect are already here, the harassment, attacks, and economic strangulation are some of the weapons that the ruling party will wield in their attempt to prevent the people’s will. But we cannot give up. We must resolve to snatch our state from the jaws of death and the predators whose only desire is to sink the ship of state. We must remain the voices of our people and work for their betterment.”
