N1.6bn budget not foreign trip — Trade minister clarifies

The minister of trade, industry, and investment, Doris Uzoka-Anite has clarified the issues surrounding the ministry’s N1.6 billion budget.

She said that the 2024 budget proposal was earmarked for the country’s trade office in Geneva, Switzerland, and not for foreign trips.

It was reported that Uzoka-Anite received backlash after she appeared before the National Assembly joint committee on trade and investment to defend her ministry’s 2024 budget proposal on Tuesday, December 13.

The senator representing Edo North and committee member, Adams Oshiomhole raised concerns over a line item in the proposed budget that would have paid N1 billion for a single trip to Geneva.

He said: “I see that you intend to travel to Geneva next year and you have budgeted over one billion for that.

“We cannot keep going on with over-bloated teams on foreign trips.”

In a statement on Wednesday, Toluwase Moyan, media aide to the minister, quoted Uzoka-Anite as saying that such a line item does not exist.

She said: “We wish to categorically state that there is no line item in the proposed budget of the federal ministry of industry, trade, and investment referring to ANY ‘Foreign Trip to Geneva’,” the statement reads.

“Rather, the only mention of ‘Geneva’ in the proposed budget is with respect to the maintenance of the Nigerian Trade Office in Geneva, captured as ‘External Trade Sector, Geneva (WTO)’, which may have been misconstrued as ‘Foreign Trip to Geneva’.

“In fact, the total amount (for NIGERIA’S TRADE OFFICE IN GENEVA) in the appropriation for 2024 is N1,610,183,599 with the breakdown as follows: Personnel Cost, N805, 379, 820; Overhead, N204, 058, 434; Capital, N600, 745, 345.”

According to the minister, Nigeria must keep an office in Geneva to advocate and safeguard its interests in multilateral trade as a major participant in international commerce.

She added: “In fact, the current debt owed by the Nigeria Trade Office in Geneva as captured in the budget is N499,000,000.00, and it was deemed necessary to propose a budget that will service Nigeria’s outstanding debts in Geneva and maintain Nigeria’s respect and global standing amongst the comity of nations.”

  • Minister: influential Nigerians behind illegal mining

Minister: influential Nigerians behind illegal mining

Heavy and powerful” Nigerians involved in illegal mining are behind insecurity, especially in parts of the country with huge solid minerals deposits,  Solid Minerals Development Minister Dele Alake said yesterday.

Alake said their activities were not only making the sector unfriendly for genuine foreign investors, but denying the nation huge incomes.

He, however, disclosed that the Federal  Government was “identifying”  the errant miners through kinetic and non-kinetic approaches to make areas with huge solid minerals secure for those interested in investing in the sector.

Alake spoke  when he appeared before the House Committee on Solid Minerals to defend the ministry’s 2024 budget estimate.

At another event in Abuja, the minister said the government, through his ministry, was ready to collaborate with the World Bank to maximally tap the nation’s solid minerals.

During the budget defence, Alake said:  “One discovery that we have made is that a lot of these insecurities, especially  banditry associated with this sector are sponsored by illegal miners.

“These are not your artisanal miners. They are not the people who pick gold on the ground. These are heavy and powerful individuals in our country. They are Nigerians and not foreigners.

“You can see foreigners as symptoms,  but they are not the basics. Nigerians are the powers behind those foreigners that you see on the streets. We are identifying them and employing various strategies,  both kinetic and non-kinetic.

“The non-kinetic with that artisanal miners, I gave them an ultimatum that they should form themselves into cooperatives because every Nigerian has a right to life and necessities and if the government cannot provide  these necessities, we cannot push them into the bush.”

He added that the ministry encouraged small-scale miners to form cooperative societies, adding that as at the last count, about 50 had come into existence.

The minister also revealed that foreign investors have begun to make more enquiries about the possibility of investing in the sector.

According to him, the ministry has identified about 44 key solid mineral deposits in the country out of which seven are in high demand because of their importance.

Alake said that with the right investment by the government, Nigeria has the potential to become a global hub for solid minerals in the world.

Stressing that the  government plans to invest heavily in exploration, he  described the N29 billion allocated to the ministry   for 2024 as a “non-starter.”

He sought the assistance of the lawmakers for adequate funding for the sector.

Chairman of the House Committee Gaza   Gbefwi said there was no time that the nation needed the input of the Solid mineral sector like now.

He said:   “All hope is not lost especially considering the fact that Mr. President(Bola Tinubu), during his budget presentation re-echoed the priority this administration has placed on the solid minerals sector and of course the person he has mandated to steer the ship of this sector.

“It is quite exciting to note that he hit the ground running by embarking on strategic bilateral and trade expeditions that will bring the needed investment into our country.”

Fed Govt, World Bank to collaborate on mining

Alake, who also received World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Shubham Chaudhuri,  expressed satisfaction with the renewed focus on the development of the nation’s mineral resources.

He stated that the government was exploring collaboration with the World Bank to unlock financing and technical support for the development of the solid mineral sector.

Alake, in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media to the Minister, Segun Tomori, added that with the preponderance of economically viable minerals, Nigeria has the potential to make the solid minerals sector a major contributor to its Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The statement reads in part: “Mr. Chaudhuri reiterated the readiness of the bank to partner with the Ministry to unlock financing for specific intervention areas requiring funding, emphasising, however, that that the terms and conditions of the bank to ensure effective implementation of projects and transparency in utilising funds is mandatory.

“He also added that the bank is not restricted to providing financing alone, asserting it can offer technical assistance to improve mining operations in the country.

“In his response, the Minister hailed the World Bank team for the visit, commending the institution for spearheading developmental efforts in diverse sectors of the economy over the years.

“The World Bank has been able to redirect focus on developmental issues and projects in countries, especially Nigeria. Just recently, we had the support of the World Bank on palliatives being rolled out after fuel subsidy removal.

“We had appreciable support from the World Bank. I thank you for your involvement in the min diver project, which, unfortunately, is coming to a close.

“We look forward to strengthening collaboration, which will culminate in the needed funding for critical areas in the mining sector, alongside the requisite technical support, as earlier hinted.

“Alake further assured that the Federal Government is committed to providing an enabling environment to safeguard mining operations whilst ensuring maximum beneficiation to host communities and accruable revenue to government through royalties and taxes.”

    Minister: 5G has limited coverage

Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has affirmed the availability of infrastructure that supports modern technology, such as the Fifth-Generation (5G) network, in Nigeria.

He, however, indicated that the modern technology infrastructure was currently not in every part of the country.

The minister who spoke on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” programme yesterday, monitored by The Nation, estimated that it would cost around $2 billion to wire the entire country for the seamless experience of the network.

According to Bosun, the government is doing everything necessary to increase the number of kilometers of fiber optics cables in Nigeria.

The minister pledged that the ministry would work hard to attain the goal of wiring the entire country.

He further said that the new administration aims to connect schools, hospitals, government offices, and other critical locations with optical cable.

“We do in some places,” he said when asked whether 5G exists in Nigeria. “The infrastructure that drives 5G is not something that is across the nation.”

“So, if you subscribe to 5G and you move into locations where the infrastructure cannot support it, of course, the quality will drop. 5G exists in Nigeria and there are telcos with the licence.

“We are about 35 to 40 kilometers right now and the goal is to get to 95,000 km. It’s going to cost us roughly about $1.5bn to $2bn to wire the entire of Nigeria because once we can do this, we will start to see changes in the delivery of public services”, he added.

Protesters demand Minister’s resignation over Kaduna bombing

Members of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) on Wednesday held a peaceful protest at the gates of the National Assembly to demand justice for victims of the bombing at Tudun Biri In the Rigassa area of Kaduna.

The protesters, who carried placards with various inscriptions, asked the Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, to either live up to his responsibility or resign, saying killings in the northern part of the country were unacceptable.

Over 80 persons have been reported dead and over 60 injured in the bombing, which occurred when drones of the Nigerian Army bombed a gathering of people said to be celebrating Maulud Sunday night.

Speaking at the protest rally which took place at the gate to the National Assembly, Leader of the protesters under the aegis of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) North West Zone and Arewa Youth Movement, Nasir Ishaku said victims of the incident must get justice from the government.

Ishaku said the killing of innocent Nigerians, especially in the Northern part on daily basis was unacceptable and can’t be tolerated any more. He asked the National Assembly to probe into the Sunday killing in Kaduna and take decisive actions to save the country.

He said: “For those who have eyes to see, let them see well, and those who have ears to hear, let them listen attentively. Nigeria is not well because Nigerians are being killed day by day.

“Security situation in the country keeps deteriorating since his (Badaru) inception as Minister of Defence. These two organisations have a moral obligation to express our grievances because Nigeria is in a shambles in terms of security of lives and property, most especially, in the Northern Nigeria.

“Nigeria keeps losing members of the armed forces which include the army, the air force, the navy and members of the Nigeria Police Force. Our university students are still in captivity and no one knows their whereabouts. These are the clear indications that the minister is incompetent to handle that sensitive ministry. Therefore, he should wake up to his responsibilities or resign.”

  • FG’ll restore lost glory of NTA, FRCN Kaduna – Minister

FG’ll restore lost glory of NTA, FRCN Kaduna – Minister

The Federal Government has restated its commitment to restore the lost glory of Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), and Radio Nigeria, Kaduna.

The Minister of Information and National, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, stated this during his address to the staff of the two stations on Friday in Kaduna when he paid a working visit.

According to him, both institutions have fostered Nigeria’s unity, peaceful coexistence, religious harmony, democracy, civic consciousness, industry and agriculture.

They have also boosted national awareness, social mobilisation, enlightenment, among several achievements in post-independent Nigeria.

“I am aware of the human and material challenges of the FRCN, Kaduna, and the NTA, especially poor working tools, outdated infrastructure, poorly motivated workforce, low competitive content, among others.

“My coming here today, in the company of the Directors General of the NTA and FRCN, is to genuinely seek a realistic approach to addressing some of these challenges, which is at the forefront of our priorities.

“We shall explore all the available options to ensure that we restore the lost glory of the NTA and FRCN.

“The case of the FRCN at national and state levels, is even more dire, particularly here at the Radio Nigeria, Kaduna, a once prestigious bastion of information that has produced innumerable broadcast icons.

“Indeed, Radio Nigeria Kaduna needs urgent resuscitation. We will surely act with urgency in this rescue mission.

“President Bola Tinubu carefully appointed all heads of parastatals in the Ministry of Information and National Orientation to help him succeed in this arduous task of rebuilding Nigeria,” he said.

He added that rebuilding the communication outfits and all other tasks would be achieved through Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which is anchored on eight cardinal missions.

The missions include food security, poverty eradication, growth, job creation, access to capital, inclusion, rule of law and fighting corruption, he stated.

The minister said he is available to explore opportunities that would provide the necessary wherewithal to ensure that NTA and FRCN are equipped with modern technology and quality staff to maximise their potential.

We shall also make welfare a priority so that the workers shall put in their best, he said.

According to him, government will reward hardworking members of staff who toil day and night to inform, educate and entertain the public.

“The government is aware of your invaluable contribution to nation-building amidst great challenges.

“Together, we will not only address the current issues, but also build a foundation for a more robust and technologically advanced future for the NTA and FRCN,” Idris said

Also speaking, the Director-General of FRCN, Dr Mohammed Bulama, said the visit by the minister is a sign of good things to come to the stations.

He said he was not surprised at the level of decay of facilities in FRCN.

“As a patriotic Nigerian, I know that something is fundamentally wrong with NTA, FRCN and others.

“The symbolism of this visit cannot be over-emphasised. God willing, all our stations and facilities will get the attention of the Ministry.”

Similarly, the Director-General of NTA, Malam Salihu Dembos, commended the minister’s insistence on coming over to see things for himself so as to work toward finding solutions to the issues.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN), reports that some workers of the two organisations later narrated their challenges which range from service interruptions, dearth of modern facilities, lack of training, poor welfare, and others.

FG to reveal comprehensive blueprint for the rollout of DSO – Minister

The minister of information and national orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said his ministry is working on a blueprint for the rollout of the Digital Switch Over (DSO) across the country.

The country had failed to meet up with all its former targets on the rollout in the past.

The minister, according to a statement by his media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim disclosed the latest plan in Abuja on Monday, November 27, while declaring open the Management Conference and Retreat of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

He said: “I also want to use this opportunity to restate federal government commitment to the Digital Switch Over (Project), as the Ministry of Information and National Orientation is working assiduously for a DSO blueprint that will not fail; that will roll out across urban and rural Nigeria. The NTA, as a key stakeholder in the DSO project, is expected to play a prominent role.”

Idris therefore challenged the NTA to reflect on the dynamic landscape of the media industry, especially with the advent of new technologies and changing viewer preferences that pose challenges and opportunities.

He said: “Our commitment to excellence and adaptability is paramount. The NTA must continue to evolve, embracing innovation while upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity.

“This retreat is coming at a time when there is a growing number of options for the viewing public to source information from, more especially against the backdrop of the dominant role of social media and the preponderance of false and misleading information therein; therefore, the significance of an event of this nature cannot be overemphasized.”

He also noted that the signal upgrade of the NTÀ from standard definition to high definition is having an appreciable impact on the viewing experience of members of the public, adding that this has to be replicated in all NTA Stations across the country to achieve the desired objective.

Against the backdrop of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President Tinubu administration, which he described as Nigeria’s most ambitious socio-economic growth plan ever, it therefore, Idris said: “behooves the NTA to continue to enlighten Nigerians on the successes being recorded on all fronts and to ensure that Nigerians understand and appreciate the policy direction of the Tinubu administration in news and programming.

The minister charged the NTA to strive to rediscover its golden era when its content, especially notable soap operas and drama series, not only defined the TV entertainment space in the country but was always a reason for viewers to rush back home in the evening.

Minister intervenes in cooking gas price hike

Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, has waded into the challenges bordering on the supply and pricing of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), also known as cooking gas, in the Nigerian domestic market.

The intervention follows the rise in recent months in the price of LPG per kg from about N700 to above N900 in some parts of the country.

Key challenges identified as responsible for LPG price increase include FX sourcing for imports and insufficient supply to the domestic market by producers.

The minister’s spokesman, Louis Ibah, who disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, November 26, said the meeting for the intervention at the instance of the minister, was held at the NNPC Towers Abuja recently.

According to him, it had in attendance top officials of Chevron Nigeria Limited led by Sansay Narasimi; Nigerian Midstream Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) led by its Chief Executive Officer, Farouk Ahmed and the NNPCL.

Ekpo expressed the concerns of President Bola Tinubu over the astronomical increase in the price of cooking gas and the attendant hardship on the majority of citizens.

The minister, who noted that Nigeria is abundantly endowed with gas reserves, said the situation where some of the multinational firms were more concerned with gas exports without dedicating huge volumes to the domestic market was unacceptable and should be discouraged.

Ekpo said: “With the exponential increase in the price of LPG, there is the need for the Federal Government to intervene and I am representing this at this moment. We acknowledge that some producers are exporting while we are faced with the challenges of importation. Public interest is the overriding interest all over the world for the government, and the demand for LPG will increase as we approach December…you have a public service obligation to collaborate with the government to ensure the security of gas supply, we need to therefore bend backward and find solutions, to ensure that we have sufficient supply and stability in-country and that Nigerians have gas.”

The gas minister thereafter constituted a committee headed by the ACE of NMDPRA with a mandate to come up with recommendations on how to boost supplies and crash LPG prices within a week

The minister said that the current administration has weaved its employment policy around skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development for blue collar jobs and that the NDE was a catalyst in the attainment of the President’s desire to lift 50 million Nigerians out of poverty.

She called on the NDE to strengthen strategic initiatives to create more decent jobs and to be ready to translate the articulated policies of the government into tangible realities.

The minister also charged the NDE to focus on the youth, women, and vulnerable groups to build the core skills needed for national revival, growth, and prosperity.

Onyejeocha stressed the need to increase the tempo of sensitisation and awareness for the skills acquisition programmes and entrepreneurship development initiatives of the Directorate.

She expressed her gratitude and appreciation to President Tinubu for the opportunity to contribute to the uplifting of the unemployed in Nigeria and declared the meeting open.

Director – General, NDE, Abubakar Fikpo said a roadmap for the NDE was necessary to direct its programmes and schemes within the framework of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
