  • Student jailed eight months for stealing wallet

    A Minna Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 20-year-old student, Osama Abubakar, to eight months’ imprisonment for stealing a commercial motorcyclist’s wallet.

    Abubakar had pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of conspiracy, theft and possession a substance suspected to be hemp.

    He had prayed for leniency.

    The Magistrate, Hauwa Yusuf, consequently convicted him based on his guilty plea and the facts of the case as presented by the prosecution in accordance with Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

    Yusuf sentenced Abubakar to eight months’ imprisonment for conspiracy and stealing but gave him an option to pay N10, 000 fine.

    The magistrate also sentenced him to five months’ jail term for possessing a banned substance but gave him an option of N5,000 fine.

    Yusuf said both sentences are to run concurrently.

    Earlier, Police Sgt. Bello Mohammed, who prosecuted the case, told the court that the student stole the wallet when he and his friend boarded a commercial motorcycle from Tunga to Sabon Gari on April 21.

    He said that while the motorcycle was in motion, the student picked the wallet from the pocket of the rider.

    According to him, the wallet contained some money.

  • Fake soldier jailed three months

    A fake soldier, 48-year-old Hamza Ismaila is to spend the next 90 days in jail, a Minna Magistrates’ Court ruled on Tuesday.

    The convict was found guilty of parading himself as a soldier.

    Tried for wearing Nigerian Army camouflage, T-shirt and trouser, Ismaila had pleaded guilty to the charge and begged for leniency.

    Magistrate Fati Auna, who handed down the judgment, however, gave the convict an option of N50, 000 fine.

    Earlier, Police Prosecutor John Steven told the court that a team of policemen on surveillance duty on Minna-Suleja Road arrested
    the accused on July 14.

    He said during investigation it was discovered that he was not a member of the Nigerian Army.

    According to him, Ismaila impersonated and parading himself as a soldier to the people of Lambata in Gurara Local Government
    Area and its environs.

    The offence violated Section 133 of the Penal Code.

  • Court remands varsity students for death of colleague

    A Minna Magistrates’ Court, has remanded three students in prison custody for allegedly beating and detaining their fellow student on suspicion that he stole an HTC handset, valued N32, 000.

    The accused persons are, Jibrin Attahiru and Idris Usman, both of the Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida University, Lapai and one other student, Shehu Abdullahi from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

    The three students were docked on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, contrary to Sections 97 and 221 of the Penal Code law.

    The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. John Steven, told the court that one Mohammed Aliyu, the Chief Security Officer of IBB University Lapai, reported the matter at the station on July 24.

    Steven quoted the complainant as alleging that on July 23, the accused persons suspected one Mubarak Sanusi, a student of the same institution, to have stolen an HTC handset, valued N32, 000 belonging to one of them.

    He said the accused persons picked up Sanusi and took him to their lodge, where they beat him up and detained him inside the toilet.

    According to him, Sanusi was said to have given up the ghost on the way to the General Hospital, Lapai, the following day.

    When the charge was read to them, they all pleaded not guilty.

    The prosecutor, thereafter, prayed the court for adjournment, as investigation into the matter was still ongoing.

    In her ruling, Magistrate Fati Auna, ordered the accused persons to be remanded in prison and adjourned the matter until Sept. 3.

  • Court remands labourer for allegedly disrupting ‘elders meeting’

    A Minna Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday, ordered the remand in prison of a 24-year-old labourer, Adamu Zakari accused of disrupting an elders’ council security meeting and slapping a titled elder.

    Zakari is being tried on a 4-count charge of criminal conspiracy, possession of dangerous weapon, inciting disturbance and assault.

    The Police prosecutor, Insp Ahmed Ali, told the court that one Sani Barde arrested and brought the accused person to the Chanchaga Police station on May 30.

    Ali alleged that the accused accompanied by seven others, invaded the venue and disrupted the security meeting been held by elders of Chanchaga.

    He told the court that the accused allegedly slapped both the complainant and one of the titled elders of Chanchaga.

    The prosecutor told the court that a horn was recovered from the accused by the police.

    However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Magistrate, Mr Jibrin Zabo, ordered the accused to be remanded in prison and adjourned the matter until June 26, for further mention.

    Butcher bags 30 days in jail for stealing goat

    A Minna Magistrates’ Court in Niger on Wednesday sentenced a butcher, Abdulrahman Umaru, to 30 days imprisonment for stealing a goat.

    Umaru, 28, was earlier arraigned on a count charge of theft.

    The offence is contrary to Section 287 of the Penal Code.

    In her ruling, Magistrate Amina Musa said that the prosecution had proved its case against the accused beyond reasonable and she had also taken note of the guilty plea of the accused.

    Musa, therefore, convicted Umaru of the offence and sentenced him to 30 days in prison.

    However, the magistrate gave the convict an option of N5, 000 fine.

    Musa also ordered Umaru to pay N25, 000 to the complainant as restitution for the goat that was stolen.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Alfred Auta, had told court that one Amina Mohammed of Maitumbi in Minna had reported the matter at the police station on July 24.

    Auta said that Mohammed reported that Umaru had stolen a goat belonging to her, valued at N25, 000 and slaughtered it in a uncompleted building.

    When the charge was read to Umaru, he pleaded guilty, but urged the court to show him mercy.

    Consequently, the prosecutor urged the court to summarily try the convict in line with Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

    He also prayed the court to order Umaru to pay N25, 000 as restitution to the complainant for the stolen goat.

     

  • Two arraigned over police officer’s death

    The Niger Police Command said it has charged two suspects at a Minna Magistrates’ Court with the killing of a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Aaron Sunday, serving with Kpakungu Division Minna, by suspected hoodlums.

    Mr Zubairu Muazu, Commissioner of Police, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) in Minna on Tuesday.

    He said that 14 others were also charged with causing civil disturbances during the incident that lead to death of the police officer.

    He explained that the command would ensure diligent prosecution of all those allegedly involved in the deadly act.

    He said that already,  the command had evolved aggressive intelligence gathering to strengthen security in the state .

    ” We have deployed armed  police operatives in and outside the metropolis for the arrest and prosecution of men of underworld .”

    He explained that the command had identified some criminal hideout across the state.

    ” We have set in motion security modalities that will end all forms of criminal conduct through our various security strategies,” he said.

    He solicited the support of residents to volunteer information that would assist the command to provide peaceful atmosphere in the state.
