Misau was on October 10, 2017  dragged before the court by Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami (SAN) on a five-count charge.

The senator was accused of falsely claiming that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, was receiving as much as N10 billion from oil companies, banks hotels and individuals as bribe for police protection.

He was also said to have falsely accused the IGP of appointing many mobile commanders of Nupe extraction.

After Misau pleaded not guilty to the seven-count charge, the lead prosecution counsel, Dr Alex Izinyon(SAN), urged the court to issue a warning to the defendant on the need to stop making further comments on the subject of the charges to the media.

”My lord I urge this court to ban the defendant from commenting on this matter to the media. For if that happens, I will come formally before this court,” Izinyon said.

The prosecution counsel also applied for a subpoena to be issued on Channels Television for the production of the video clips where the senator allegedly made malicious claims against the IGP and others.

The defence counsel, Mr Paul Erokoro (SAN), said the defendant would never make such comments.

”We must also remember that the defendant is a serving senator,”  Erokoro said.

The Chief Judge of the FCT High Court, Justice Ishaq Bello, cautioned the senator against making further comments in the media on issues bordering on the charges for which he is being prosecuted.

  • Group urges Senate to release Misau to police

A CIVIL rights group, Salvage for Development Initiative (SDI), has called on the Senate to release Senator Isah Ahman Misau to honour police invitation and clear himself of allegations of misconduct.

The SDI said if the Senate compel Misau to go and defend himself before the police disciplinary committee, it will put an end to the raging controversy and protect the National Assembly’s image.

Misau representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District had alleged that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris makes N10 million monthly from posting and promotion of police officers and the use of police by corporate bodies and highly placed individuals.

The group at a news conference addressed by its Director of Programme, Malam Abdullateef Sani and National Secretary, Mr. Gafar Temitayo, described Misau’s defence to the allegations against him as cheap blackmail, distraction and deliberate acts to  derail investigation.

It called on the senator to address the following allegations: “How he was able to acquire properties running into millions of naira in choice areas of Abuja as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP); how he contested for senatorial seat in 2011, when he actually retired from the Force in 2014 and when did he change his name from Mohammed Isah Hamma to Senator Isah Hamma Misau without official notification published in any newspaper submitted to the Police Force.”

The commission, in a letter signed by the Chairman of the Special Panel, Justice Olufunlola Adekeye,  titled: “Re: Retirement from the Nigeria Police Force of AP 57300 DSP Mohammed Isah Hamma – Invitation to appear before Police Service Commission Panel”, stated that the immediate issue for investigation is the genuineness or otherwise of the two letters of retirement supposed to have emanated from the Police Service Commission in connection with this retirement”.

This is contained in a statement in Abuja yesterday by the commission spokesman Ikechukwu Ani.

The commission noted that it received correspondence from the Nigeria Police Force Special Investigation Panel (SIP) Force Headquarters dated August 28, relating to the senator’s retirement from the police.

Dickson urges police, Misau to stop feud

Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson has urged the police and Senator Isa Misau to end their feud over allegations of corruption.

He spoke yesterday when he resumed duty after his vacation.

Dickson said the allegations were unhealthy to the image of the senator and the police.

Misau, who is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, alleged that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, received gratifications from police commissioners and corporate organisations.

The police responded by declaring the senator a deserter for allegedly leaving the force to contest an election without following due process or getting the right permission.

But, Dickson expressed concern over the controversy, which, he said, was capable of ridiculing public institutions by portraying the Senate and the police in bad light.

Describing the two institutions as critical and sacred, the governor insisted that such crisis of confidence could undermine the police and the Senate.

Calling on Misau to withdraw his allegations against the police, the governor also asked the police to restrain from making further statements on the matter or taking further action against the senator.

The governor observed that the police had many problems that required the support of stakeholders, including serving and former officers.

He said such support would help motivate policemen and officers, “who are underfunded but are doing a difficult job in a difficult situation to safeguard the country”.

Dickson, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, confirmed that he had returned from his vacation after enjoying deserved rest and attending to personal matters.

The statement said the governor as required by law had transmitted a letter to the State House of Assembly through the Speaker, Konbowei Benson, to notify the lawmakers of his resumption.

  • Bauchi imposes curfew on Misau

    Bauchi imposes curfew on Misau

Bauchi State government has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Misau town, following a riot that trailed the appointment of an emir by the government.

The curfew, which the government said was part of measures to protect people, would last between 6pm and 6am daily.

It was learnt that riot broke out in the town, following the appointment of the Secretary to the State Government, Ahmed Sulaiman, as the 11th emir by Governor Mohammed Abubakar.

Residents  expected one of the scions of the late emir or a close member of the Gwani Mukhtar ruling dynasty to be appointed to the throne.

A statement by the Permanent Secretary, Special Services, Abdul Ilelah, said: “Reports reaching the government have indicated that after the official announcement of the appointment of the 11th Emir of Misau and the successful conduct of the traditional rites, some mischief makers have taken advantage of the apparent jubilant mood of the people and instigated youths into smashing vehicles parked at the Emir’s palace.

“Government views this development as the handiwork of the evil doers who are bent on destroying the prevailing peace and security being enjoyed in the state, in order to enjoy selfish objectives.”

The statement said the government would not fold its arms and watch mischief makers wreak havoc on citizens, as the protection of life and property “remains the cardinal responsibility of the present administration.”

The government, according to the statement, assured the citizens, especially residents of Misau, that the situation had been brought under control.
