  • Boat mishap: Divers locate vessel in ocean bed

    •Crew unaccounted for

The fate of 12 crew members of the ill-fated tugboat, Jascon 4, belonging to a contractor working for Chevron Nigeria Limited in Escravos area of Delta State remains uncertain last night nearly 48 hours after the accident.

It was gathered that divers searching for the sunken vessel, owned by a subsidiary of Sea Trucks Group (STG), West Africa Ventures, located it yesterday.

The vessel was towing a foreign crude oil tanker from the sea to the Single Bouy Mooring (SBM) #3, a terminal located about 30km off Escravos, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.

Sources said because of the size of the tankers it was necessary to use smaller vessels as the Jascon 4 to guide them to the load facility before they are filled.

It was during the course of performing the routing tension tow that the incident occurred.

The Nation learnt that there were 11 Nigerians and one expatriate, whose identity was not immediately known, on board.

Sources said there were no signs of survivors or the remains of victims, despite patrol by a search and rescue team deployed by Chevron.

The development erased any hope of finding any of the dozen crew members alive.

Chevron’s General Manager, Policy Government and Public Affairs Deji Haastrup confirmed that none of the crew members had been found.

But he neither confirmed nor deny our inquiry on whether the vessel had been located.

“I can only confirm that they are still conducting a search and rescue operation and so far they have still not been able to find anyone.”

A source at the offshore loading facility, owned by CNL, told our reporter that most of the crew members were sleeping in their cabins with doors locked from the inside, when the accident occurred.

Our source, who pleaded for anonymity, said: “It was about 5am when the accident occurred. The vessel was one of the three towing a tanker to the loading point when it occurred.

“The sea was very rough and the wave was beating on the vessel and it was windy and turbulent.

“The tension rope snapped and obviously unbalanced the vessel thereby causing it to capsize,” our source added.

It was gathered that two officials from STG in the US are on their way to Nigeria as part of a fact-finding mission to the scene tomorrow.

It was further learnt that a fact-finding mission comprising the two experts, official of the Nigeria Maritime and Security Agency (NIMASA), CNL and some other government functionaries would visit the scene tomorrow.

“They have located the vessel in the belly of the ocean, but because the cabins were apparently locked when the accident occurred.”

Expectedly, reports of the incident caused panic among families who have relatives working for Chevron and its contractors yesterday.

A source at the Escravos Tank Farm told our reporter that the company was inundated with several calls from relatives desperate to speak to their relations.

    Editors, others escape air mishap

Editors and other passengers scheduled to fly to Abuja from Ibadan Airport yesterday narrowly escaped a possible air mishap as their flight was suddenly delayed for hours after two rear tyres of their aircraft suddenly burst as it was about to take off.

The passengers had boarded the chopper aircraft operated by Cabatin with the door shut before the incident.

It was learnt that the incident led to cancellation of the remaining flight scheduled to Abuja while those from Lagos were also alerted to abort their schedules.

The stranded passengers included editors who came to attend this year’s convention of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), where a new executive committee led by the Deputy Editor-In-Chief of The Sun newspapers, Mr Femi Adesina, was elected.

    They all returned home disappointed.

All outward flights to Abuja were thereafter put on hold for about 24 hours to enable the aircraft owners fix the burst tyres.

It was, however, learnt that a chopper from the affected aircraft company arrived later with two tyres to replace the burst tyres.

  • Let’s avoid mishap, says Fashola

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola yesterday urged Lagosians to avoid tragedies this year.

He spoke at the 14th Annual Thanksgiving service hosted by the government.

General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Pastor Enoch Adeboye conducted the service.

Fashola said: “We witnessed floods in our land and across the world. There were orgies of mindless violence and bombings that claimed many innocent lives.

“In one day of the 3rd of June 2012, 150 souls lost their lives in the Dana Airplane crash that left a profound and lasting effect on people throughout the country.

“However in the midst of tragedies there were also flickers of hope. The tragedies reminded of the public spirited nature of most Lagosians.

“The sheer number of volunteers, hospital staff, donors and relief workers who went above and beyond the call of duty to bring succor, safety and comfort to families and dependents of the deceased made me especially proud to be a Lagosian.

“We have shown over the last year that whenever there has been a major incident, we have the collective wherewithal and capacity to rise to the occasion.

“It is that selflessness, that spirit of brotherhood that I use this opportunity to urge that we bring to the fore as our normal way of life, and as our everyday value.

“And whilst we pray to witness fewer tragic incidents in 2013, let us all strive towards even greater heights of community awareness.

“Accidents are by their very nature unplanned and unexpected. However there are those which can also be avoidable.

“I want to renew my plea for increased vigilance this year. I’m sure you have all heard of multi-purpose halls but now people seem to want to live in multi-purpose homes as well.

“When you use your home as a shop, a store, an office, an eatery, a nightclub, a place of worship then you attract these avoidable mishaps.

“On a brighter note, 2012 was also about the realization of lifelong dreams and objectives for many citizens. That car you had saved for was finally yours. That university admission you had patiently waited for finally came to pass. The business you had always dreamed of starting is now thriving.

“Many of the little blessings that we must count came our way. If we look back and reflect, we will truly see what God did for us.

“Yes there are still many dreams and I believe they will come to pass.

“Lagos is where many citizens of our country strive to come to realize some of these dreams.

“It is the place where the Nigerian dream has been repeated in the lives of ordinary citizens for many decades.

“As we progress into 2013 thousands more will flood in, all in search of their own fairytale.”
