  • Three writers for Ebedi

    Three writers have arrived at the Ebedi International Writers Resort in Iseyin, Oyo State, for the October/November Residency Programme. They are Stephen Adinoyi, Tukura John Daniel and Zaasi Dawn Meneh.

    Adinoyi, a Kaduna-based  writes poetry, short stories, plays and film scripts. He is a former Vice Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Kaduna State Chapter and the past Chairman of the Kaduna Writers League. His works have featured in several newspapers and magazines in Nigeria and abroad, and has participated in many BBC and Commonwealth playwriting competitions. He has also been published in an anthology of Pidgin English, If Yu Hie Se A De Prizin, while his pidgin play, A No Beta Pas Mai Nebo, was recently staged in Abuja. He is a graduate of Mass Communications and a Consultant in Human Resource Development and Educational Services.  Adinoyi will spend his time in Ebedi completing a collection of short stories entitled: Tales Of Chrislam. The work focuses on the tragedies, gains, loses, hypocrisies, perversions, ignorance and extremisms of the two major religions in Nigeria. It also touches on issues relating to these religions in other parts of the world.

    On his part, Tukura, an Abuja-based writer and filmmaker, will be utilising the solitude at the residency to complete a new screenplay and a novel. Tukura has attended many workshops on screenwriting, such as the Ford Foundation/Afrinolly

    Writers Workshop and the Bold & Beautiful Academy organised by the New York Film Academy.

    Between 2013 and 2014, Tukura undertook an online Screen writing course organised by the New York Film Academy. His creative works include the screenplay, Every Woman that is currently in preproduction in Los Angeles, US.

    He also wrote the screenplays Avnigo, for Ford Foundation’s Cinema4change and Mrs & Mrs Johnson for MNET.

    Meneh from Rivers State is the third resident. He intends to use his six-week stay at Ebedi to work on his debut novel, The Lion’s Dream and to carry out further research on other manuscripts he is currently working on. The 2007 Accountancy graduate from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology has worked extensively in the area of research into the folktales of the South-South and North-Central states of the country.

    The Ebedi International Writers Residency, a private initiative for writers to complete their on-going works at no expense to the writers, is in its fourth year of existence. Since inception, it has played host to over 50 writers from Nigeria and other African countries.

    POPULAR actor, Gbenro Ajibade, of an MNET drama series, may have been struck by Cupid’s arrows going by the way he carries on with another ex-beauty queen cum model, Osas Ighodaro. Although the affair is still kept under wraps, those close to the lovebirds said the union may be for keeps.

    Osas, former Miss Black USA 2010, has a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism & dual minor degrees in Entrepreneurship & Theatre from Pennsylvania State University and a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Acting from Pace University.

  • M-NET names new regional director for West-Africa

    M-Net,  television content provider in Africa, has named Mrs. Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu as its first Regional Director, West Africa.

    The CEO of M-Net Sub-Saharan Africa, Mrs. Patricia van Rooyen said Mba-Uzoukwu’s appointment reflected the broadcaster’s rapid growth in West Africa.

    “Such has been the increase in our pan-African viewership that we recently decided to split our African operations into West and East Africa,” Van Rooyen said.

    “This will enable us to increase our presence in these regions, and to focus on delivering content and services that are tailored to exactly what our audiences want.”

    Van Rooyen said Mrs. Mba-Uzoukwu was one of West Africa’s most talented broadcast executives, having joined M-Net as Regional Manager in October 2012.

    With a degree in Political Science and a postgraduate diploma in Direct Marketing, she joined M-Net from Airtel Nigeria Limited where she was Head of Brand and Marketing Communications.

    “Wangi will head up an extremely strong content team that will capitalise on the excellent reputation and popularity that M-Net has amongst hundreds of thousands of West Africans viewers,” Van Rooyen said.
    Mrs. Mba-Uzoukwu takes up her new position on 1 March 2014.

    Beverly Naya gets role in Tinsel

    Many regard sultry Nollywood act, Beverly Naya as a rising star. The actress has landed a role in the critically acclaimed MNET Series, Tinsel.

    Set to play Yaya, Beverly enthused; “I was in the United States shooting a TV series when I was contacted about a screen test for the role of Yaya.

    Fortunately, my return back to Lagos was in a week. So as soon as I got back, I auditioned. I was delighted when I got the role. Yaya really is a fantastic character to play.”

    She describes it as nothing but a lovely journey working with the Tinsel cast and crew, describing them as welcoming and professional. “I’m also happy that I can now be seen not just in Nigeria but around Africa too, that’s a beautiful blessing.”

    The youngster came into limelight with the movie, The Actress, which was co-produced by her mom and notable filmmaker Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen.
