Sanwo-Olu will not disappoint you. He will not disappoint Lagosians.”

Nelson highlighted the challenges ahead, advising the women to gird their loins.

She said: “Go and get your PVCs. Mobilise in your wards, local governments and constituencies. The reward after voting will commensurate with your contributions. This time around, reward will be based on efforts.”

  • Group to mobilise for Ugwuanyi’s re-election

Group to mobilise for Ugwuanyi’s re-election

    •Governor signs N103.5b budget

A group, the Gburugburu Continuity and Equity Group 2019-2023, has vowed to mobilise support to actualise the re-election of Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

It said it would rally eligible citizens to register and obtain their voters card ahead of next year’s elections.

The group’s General Coordinator, Nze Sam Nwanze, who spoke after its inauguration at Royal Palace Hotel, Enugu, said Ugwuanyi “deserves the people’s support due to his wonderful leadership style of equity and fairness to all”.

Nwanze will be assisted by a lawyer, Sunday Egbo, who will serve as his deputy, among other interim officers.

He said: “First, the group will strive to mobilise the people to support the governor all through his tour of duty in the Government House, as long as he is doing the wish of the people who elected him.

“We will not only support his 2019 ambition, but will continue to back him till 2023, when he will hand over to another worthy person to continue the good works, and even surpass him.

“We will also embark on voter education so that citizens will know the importance of their votes to good governance. It is instructive to note that during the 2015 elections, of about 70 million possible voters, less than 30 million voted. Where were others? One could ask.

“Our membership drive will be through online registration and physical mode. We are targeting about one million members, most of who may be youths.

“Our movement is planned to endure, unlike some of the pressure groups which emerge to profess their support at any particular election period and fizzle out thereafter.

“There will not be any discrimination of any type for membership, provided aspiring members share our dream and vision. Our people in the Diaspora, who will be willing to join us, will be welcomed.”

The group will be formally unveiled soon, Nwanze added.

Ugwuanyi yesterday signed the N103.5 billion budget for the 2018 fiscal year.

The governor promised to fully implement the budget for the people’s benefit and rapid development of the state.

At the ceremony were his Deputy, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo, members of the State Executive Council; lawmakers led by the Speaker, Edward Ubosi; Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Augustine Nnamani, among other top government functionaries.

Ugwuanyi noted that the House, after due deliberations, increased the budget size from N98 billion to N103 billion. He hailed the lawmakers for the speedy and considerate passage of the budget, and the “wonderful” cooperation they have accorded the government since inception.

The Speaker hailed Ugwuanyi for the modest budget, which he said reduced both the internal and external borrowing to 16 per cent. He described the governor as a good manager.

She said about 8.2 million people die of cancer yearly and there are 100,000 new cases of cancer every year in Nigeria. “But with mobile cancer centres, there will be a drastic change, and reduction of cancer cases, since Nigeria does not have a comprehensive cancer centre,”Nzelu noted.

The chairman of CECP, Prof Pat Utomi also in his remarks emphasised the need for every one to put hands together to fight cancer to bring it under control. “As a community, we are gifts to one another, hence the need to help each other,” he said. He also noted that with mobile cancer centre, the cost of the burden of Nigerians living with cancer will drop. “It will also reduce the amount we spend in other countries in getting treatment, and that will also help our economy to grow,” he said.

Meanwhile, as part of activities marking the National Cancer Week, the Nigerian Stock Exchange in collaboration with CECP is organizing a corporate challenge for listed companies and the capital market community. This annual event is a 5 km race which is designed to raise funds for the Big War Vs Cancer in Nigeria. The lawmakers, comprising three senators and five House of Representatives members, led by Senator Babafemi Ojudu, spoke in Ijero-Ekiti at a meeting with APC representatives in the five councils in the district.

The other senators are Anthony Adeniyi and Olu Adetunmbi. The House of Representatives members include Bimbo Daramola, Oyetunde Ojo, Bamidele Faparusi, Robinson Ajiboye and Ife Arowosoge.

The lawmakers pledged their support for Governor Kayode Fayemi in the governorship election slated for June.

Ojudu, said: “Fayemi is a marketable product, whose performance has won acceptability and commendation across the state.”

Informing the people of their constituency projects, such as the Ureje Eco-tourism Park and the Itapaji Irrigation Farm, he assured members that “no federal might can upturn the will of the people.”

Ojudu said: “When we were not in power, we were not scared. No one can scare us with federal might. We have Godly might, which is bigger than federal might, but we must not underrate the opposition. It is not enough to have the crowd. We must ensure that we register during the voter registration and vote en masse.”

He advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to repeat its mistakes in the Delta senatorial by-election and the Anambra State governorship poll in Ekiti.

Adetunmbi urged the people to protect their votes, adding: “Those in the Labour Party (LP) are pro-Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). They are just hiding under the LP because they know the PDP is no longer sellable. Ekiti will not go back into slavery.”

Adeniyi stressed the need to protect the gains of the Fayemi administration by ensuring the APC’s victory in the election.

Daramola (Ekiti North 1) said the election was not about the governor alone, but about generations unborn.

He said: “Everyone has a stake in this election. This is the time to move forward. Lying politicians will come to you, but tell them you know where you are going. When they come back to meet you at night, tell them to come out in the open.

  • ‘Mobilise new members for APC’

Scores of supporters of the newly registered All Progressives Congress (APC) at the weekend met at Iju, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, for the inauguration of the party in the local government.

Alasoadura urged the people to support those who will emerge as its chairmen at the state, local and ward levels.

He said more people should be mobilised for the progressives’ train.

Another chieftain of the defunct ACN in Akoko, Chief Bode Sunmonu, said APC’s emergence was the best thing, because it would deliver the nation from the shackles of poverty of the ruling PDP.

He expressed delight about the massive turnout of the people at the meeting, adding that the APC would bring succour to the people, particularly in Ondo State.

Nigerians in South Africa mobilise support for Eagles

Members of the Nigerian community in South Africa have started moblising to support the Super Eagles during the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The event has been scheduled to run from Jan. 19 to Feb. 10, 2013.

Anagu said Nigerians living in South Africa and Mozambique were being moblised to support the national team.

“We have done a lot of mobilisation through the various Nigerian unions in South Africa and Mozambique for them to come out in their numbers to support the team. The Nigerian union is making arrangements to rent 46-seater buses to take us to Nelspruit, apart from individuals that will be travelling to watch Nigerian matches. Our plan is to travel a day before any of our matches, to have a `one on one’ encounter with our national team, to motivate and support them,’’ Anagu said.

He said Nigerians in Mozambique were making their own arrangements to give their full support to the national team.

“As we are making our own arrangements here in South Africa, members of the Nigerian community in Mozambique are also making their own arrangements. Mozambique is not too far from Nelspruit. It is even closer to the venue than Johannesburg, so we are expecting many Nigerians to come from Mozambique to support our national team,’’ Anagu said.

He said members of the Nigerian Football Supporters Club in South Africa will join those coming from home to motivate the players
