  • NGO organises UTME mock exam

The Coordinator of Academic Excellence Initiative (AEI), Kwara State branch, Dr Yakub Saheed,  said 104 applicants for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) benefited from a free mock examination organised by the NGO.

Saheed told reporters at the venue of the examination, Lamp Bearer Nursery and Primary School, Asa-Dam Road, Ilorin that examination malpractice had taken a new dimension.

He said the target of the AEI was to prepare students for the UTME and to ensure that those who were not captured in the mock examination organised by JAMB were given another chance.

Saheed lamented that school proprietors and principals were compromising morals, aiding malpractices, hence the need to bring back sanity into the system.

He said there was decline in the education sector when compared to what was obtainable before.

Saheed observed that there was poor knowledge of ICT among students, saying that knowledge of ICT, however, was integral to succeed in UTME.

He noted that resources were pooled together by members of the group to finance the scheme, which is being replicated across the country.

“Our entire programmes are tailored towards encouraging students’ excellence and moral uprightness.

“This is just to contribute our own quota to the development of the education system in the country.”

  • BBNaija housemates face second mock eviction

BBNaija housemates face second mock eviction

•As Jon, Ese make smooth exit

The tension was not too intense in this week’s supposed ejection from the Big Brother Naija show, as no particular housemates were marked for possible eviction. Even when Bally and Ese were called out by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, the others housemates were hopeful about their return. “Guys you’re coming back. It’s a lie…,” said Uriel, even as others nodded their heads in agreement.

No real eviction took place because Biggie had cancelled the nominations after some housemates broke the rules by conspiring against others for nomination. It was the same positive feeling when Bisola and Jon were sent to the arena.

The twist ended with a fantastic game and holiday for two in Paradise. It happened that only the two fake housemates- Ese and Jon – were out via an easy exit that left no room for suspicion.

Recall that Bally and Bisola had immunity from their previous tasks in the house.

While Bally had discovered the green card which he held on to in the last two weeks, Bisola’s immunity came via last week’s eviction show game that had her playing alongside Bassey and TBoss. Bisola got her question correctly and was immuned from nomination. Bassey got his question correctly too, and enjoyed a traditional dish of his choice. TBoss however missed her question and had to wash the dishes for the entire week.

As Jon and Ese made their ways out of the holding room, Bisola, who had bonded well with, especially the latter, got emotional, while Bally looked confused.

For the other eight housemates, Ebuka called them to the arena for a nomination game. There were 30 envelopes on the table from which housemates were asked to pick one. They were all unlucky, and are up for possible eviction next week: Bassey, TBoss, Efe, Marvis, Debbie-Rise, Kemen,  ThinTallTony and Uriel. However, only the would-be Head of House, after tomorrow’s task will be immuned for possible eviction. Unlike before, Biggie has ruled that the Head of House’s power cannot save or replace any housemate.

While Jon and Ese joined Ebuka on stage, the host described them both as the ‘best fake housemates’ in the history of the show.

Jon said that the fact that the game looked like he was there to take over from Miyonse, who had been evicted earlier, made it difficult for him to hatch his plan against TBoss.

Blindfolded, Bally and Bisola were led to their surprised vacation abode by two ninjas. Biggie said they will be in that juicy isolation for a couple of days.

On who might win the show, he said, “I used to think it would be Efe, but now it looks like it might be ThinTallTony.”

For Ese: “I think it’s between ThinTallTony and Bisola,” she said.

Just before the mock eviction show, Nigerian songstress, Emma Chukwugoziam Obi, aka Emma Nyra sang her popular dance hall/reggae influenced song, ‘Drop It’. Her performance was followed after a short interval, by that of the earlier advertised sonorous singer, Simi, who serenaded the crowd with ‘Love Don’t Care. When she returned for her second performance, Simi took the show higher with her mid-tempo afro pop song, ‘Jamb Question’.

The next eviction show holds on Sunday, March 5. And viewers in Nigeria are expected to text the word “Vote” followed by their preferred housemate’s name to 32052. While for the rest of Africa, fans are told to follow the AfricaMagictv official account on WeChat and click on the menu option ‘BBNaija’ and select their preferred housemate. Voting will open at 21h00 WAT on Monday, February 27 and will close at 20h00 WAT on Saturday, March 4, 2017.

Sponsored by online retail store, PayPorte, the show is aired 24/7 in 45 countries from Nigeria through East, West and Southern Africa on all DStv packages on channel 198 and GOtv channel 29.

  • ‘Don’t mock an old man’

A thanksgiving service was held at the First Baptist Church in Ajegunle-Apapa, Lagos for Pa Remi Williams, a lawyer and grassroots politician, who clocked 85. JOSEPH ESHANOKPE reports

AT 85, Pa Remi Williams has cause to celebrate. He remains happily married and is in good health. Penultimate Sunday, he went to the First Baptist Church, Ajegunle-Apapa, Lagos to give thanks to God for His infinite mercies.

At 11 am, the service kicked off. But it was a two-part English service – the Sunday service, which included a child dedication and the thanksgiving. The dedication of baby Victoria Ogunniyi lasted less than an hour. This over, Pa Williams who had all along sat in the front pew, took over.

A man of many parts, Pa Williams was accompanied to the church by his amiable wife Yemi, children and friends. Also with him were members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), of which he is a stalwart. They included the Chairman, Ifelodun Local Development Council Area (LCDA), Alhaji Fatai Ajidagba; his deputy, Alhaji Lateef Ojora-Adejiyan; Majority Leader Lamidi Kareem; Leader of the House, Muyideen Are; former House of Representatives member, Hon Olusegun Ogunbanjo, former Chairman, of the LCDA, Dr Abiola Ajijola and ex-Secretary, Education Board, Adewale Adeogun.

The Choir opened the day with some special songs prepared to suit the occasion. These were interspersed by songs raised by the celebrator and his people who were given room to sing. This over, opening Hymn 159 titled: Fu’mghin lowuro, Irugbe iinure was taken.

The Minister in charge of the church, Rev Joshua Adetunji Ojuwoni, who described the service as unique, said Pa Williams had cause to thank God. He noted that the octogenarian is an epitome of good character, humility, forgiveness and ‘a politician to the core’. He recalled that as a member of his church, any time Pa Williams met him, he would bow to greet. But when the cleric corrected him, saying it should be the other way round, Pa Williams insisted, adding that he (Rev Ojuwoni) is a man of God.

The cleric, who spoke on Managing our time, said there was need to manage one’s time because life belongs to God. “This age is the grace of God. It is not by might or power. Only God can set back the time. To waste time is to miss opportunities. You can borrow money, but you can’t borrow time, “ he said. He warned the young not to laugh at an old man or a bald person, adding that it was risky.

Earlier, Pa Williams, who wore aso oke, and a pair of glasses, stood. When many thought he would tell the story of his life, he did not. Rather, he counselled. He cited about five verses for reading. They included Galatians 6: 7 – 8; II Corinthians 9: 6 – 9; and Deut 15: 10. He urged the congregation to give cheerfully, saying there is blessing in giving. He added: “Anywhere you may be, try to do good. Continue to give to God’s work. I have something to contribute that is why I am alive today. I pray that God will bless all of you.”

This was followed by a thanksgiving and praises. The ceremony later shifted to the Bola Tinubu Multipurpose Hall on Ojo Road for reception.

  • 2013 AfricaN Cup of nations: Zambia mock Eagles’ N1.6m-a-player largesse

2013 AfricaN Cup of nations: Zambia mock Eagles’ N1.6m-a-player largesse

THe Zambian government has put an “attractive package” on the table for the national soccer team to take if it retains the African Cup of Nations.

Zambia is in Group C with Burkina Faso, Ethiopia and Nigeria and the country’s Minister of Sports and Youth Chishimba Kambwili said Nigeria’s offer of US$100,000 each to the Super Eagles players is a sign of panic.

Nigerian players have been promised US$100,000 (about N1.6m)) each if they win the championship slated for January 19 to February 10 in South Africa. This is the same amount the Zambian government gave the Chipolopolo players for winning the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

“The stage has been set for our team and I can assure the nation that the players have been given good bonuses. For Nigeria, they are just playing mind games with the money strategy because they are scared,” he said.

Kambwili said the government is confident the championship will return to Zambia and the players will get the “cash bonanza”, whose value he declined to state.

He also disclosed that through the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), the players have already been told the monetary gain if they win.

He however stated that Zambia would not make public what each player would get because the government and FAZ do not want to put undue pressure on the team.

Kambwili is confident that Zambia will retain the Africa Cup.

He said he sees no reason why the Chipolopolo cannot follow in the footsteps of Egypt who won the Africa Cup in 2006, 2008 and 2010, Cameroon who won it back-to-back in 2000 and 2002 and Ghana who were champions in 1963 and 1965.

“Our expectations are high and we do not expect anything short of retaining the title. What can stop us if Egypt managed?” Kambwili asked.

The Chipolopolo boys who will be based in Nelspruit will play their opening game on January 21 against Ethiopia.
