    Modupe Olusola’s simplicity

Modupe Olusola is, by every standard, a woman of pride. She is thriving in a male-dominated world, while her brilliance, intelligence, nature and ability to deviate from the norm have carved her a niche in banking and agricultural sectors. Now she operates in the hospitality sector as Transcorp Hotel boss.

Blessed with beauty and graceful gait, Modupe, who is a graduate of the University of Leicester and the University of Kent in the United Kingdom, has a very sociable and affable personality. While many see her thrive now and are envious of her success they are not aware of the hard work and resilience she put in before she could attain her current height in life. Many just see the glory but have forgotten the process that led to the life-changing story.

The Chief Executive Officer of Transcorp Hotel has indeed proved that creating streams of opportunity and thriving well in any field you are in is not just by fluke but by putting the right operational elements to work.

As the head of Marketing at the United Bank for Africa (UBA), Modupe was a workaholic who invented innovative ways that contributed to the bank’s leap in fortune. He ensured she drove the marketing of the bank with ideas that were impeccable this saw her rise to being the second woman to be the CEO of Transcorp in 2020 and to date, investors are super excited with the spike in Return on Investment while customers of the Hospitality hub in Abuja have commended the innovative ways of service delivery all facilitated by Modupe.

Today, while she sits on top the billion dollars investment, many think she is supposed to be inaccessible to people but the reverse is the case.

Modupe has turned herself into an open book, maintaining a respectful and playful nature with everyone around her regardless of age and strata.

She displayed this last week Saturday at the 60th birthday bash of Nike Faleti at the Congress Hall, Transcorp in Abuja where she went around to ensure her friends were having fun and enjoying their stay.

Despite delegating work to some members of the staff, she personally went round all the tables to meet the needs of guests, attending to their requests. Those close to her disclosed that she is a woman who was trained to never look down on anyone.

  • Egbeyemi campaigns for Buhari in market

Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi, on Tuesday stormed the Bisi Market in Ado Ekiti to campaign for President Muhammadu Buhari.

Egbeyemi, during the market campaign, also canvassed support for all the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates for federal and state legislative seats in the February 16 and March 2 elections respectively.

He was joined at the market outreach by former Deputy Governor Prof. Modupe Adelabu and other party stalwarts.

The Deputy Governor, who built the market during his tenure as Ado Ekiti Local Government Chairman, said residents have much to gain if they vote for APC candidates at all levels.

According to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Odunayo Ogunmola, Egbeyemi particularly called on Igbo traders to cast their votes for Buhari and APC National Assembly candidates on Saturday at all the polling units in the area.

He also urged the electorate to vote for the APC House of Representatives candidate for Ekiti Central Federal Constituency 1, Mr. Olusola Fatoba; House of Assembly candidate for Ado Constituency 1; Oluwatoyin Lucas and House of Assembly candidate for Ado Constituency 2, Mrs. Adekemi Famuagun-Balogun.

Egbeyemi described the candidates as loyal, tested, trusted and competent to contribute to law enactment that would bring better life to the electorate.

The deputy governor enjoined all residents of Ogbon Ado and Ogbon Oba areas within the vicinity of the market to troop out en masse and vote APC to continue to enjoy good governance at state and federal levels.

Egbeyemi stressed that although he won his unit and ward at last year’s governorship poll, he was not satisfied with the total number of votes recorded.

Describing general elections as “family vote,” Egbeyemi urged all registered voters, especially the traders to vote overwhelmingly this time around for the APC.

Massive votes for the APC, according to him, would afford the state government to make demands for federal appointments and projects that would be beneficial to the people.

•Says soldiers, police deployed to protect lives

THE Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Prof. Modupe Adelabu has urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and supporters of Governor Kayode Fayemi not to be intimated by the heavy presence of security operatives.

The deputy governor, according to her Senior Assistant (Media), Bunmi Ogunmodede, gave the advice while addressing residents of Fiyinfoluwa Street, Isale Ori  Apata, Off Adebayo Road, Ado-Ekiti, who gathered to express their solidarity and support for reelection bid of Governor Fayemi.

“The security operatives at the polling units are there to protect you and your votes. So, don’t be afraid to come out and cast your vote for Governor Fayemi on Saturday to enable him to continue the good work,” she told the crowd of party supporters.

According to her, the operatives have been mandated to protect lives, guard the ballot boxes, give them adequate security to ensure that they are not vandalised or stolen by anti-democratic forces.

Besides, the deputy governor said the operatives have been deployed in the state to deal with law-breakers.

Mrs. Adelabu urged party faithful to conduct themselves peacefully as they go out to vote on the election day, even as she advised them to wait patiently till the end of the poll.

Assuring them of the completion of all the ongoing projects in their domain, the deputy governor advised them to subject the food items being distributed by desperate politicians to laboratory tests to determine their suitability for consumption.

She also told youths not to yield themselves as willing tools in the hands of do-or-die politicians to cause violence and perpetrate electoral fraud.

Reacting, the Chairman of the Landlords and Residents Association in the area, Dr. Ayodele Joseph noted that the community has tasted democratic dividends under the Fayemi-administration through the implementation of electrification and road projects.

He said the speed at which the government respond to the people’s requests has endeared it to the people, assuring that the residents will reciprocate by voting massively for the governor.

Ayodele listed the interlocked road project, the replacement of the faulty transformer servicing the area and the renovation of the only school in the area as some of the landmarks of the administration in the area.

Also speaking, a youth leader, Mr. Ojo Taiwo lauded the government for empowering the youths and for several other programmes that have been put in place to secure a better future for them.

He said the youths cannot be deceived by desperate politicians, adding that “a vote for Fayemi is a vote that will guarantee a better Ekiti for all.”

No competing alternative to Fayemi, says deputy

THE Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, yesterday took a critical look at those jostling for the governorship seat on the platforms of opposition parties and declared that they are not competing alternatives to Governor Kayode Fayemi.

Prof. Adelabu cautioned against the manipulation of the June 21 governorship election in Ekiti State, saying that its integrity would determine Nigeria’s future.

A statement by her media aide, Mr. Bunmi Ogunmodede said the deputy governor spoke at the weekend, before a peaceful rally by members of the APC was disrupted by hoodlums sympathetic to the agitation of one of the opposition parties.

The deputy governor urged those plotting to manipulate the electoral process to gauge the pulse of the electorate in the state to avoid embarking on a mission that will be counter-productive.

Mrs. Adelabu said the Fayemi-led administration has concluded plans to embark on value re-orientation as part of ways to eradicate street urchins and thuggery, which she noted have become pastimes among the youths.

According to her, the voters in the state have become sophisticated to be tricked into supporting a candidate that would reverse the progress recorded in the past three and a half years.

She said: “What we need in Ekiti State now is continuity and consolidation on what has been done. All on-going projects must be completed and there must be value re-orientation as concerted effort must be made to eradicate urchins and thuggery among our youths.

“We are providing more opportunities and designing more empowerment programmes that will make more youths gainfully engaged and employed.”

The deputy governor said it would amount to an exercise in futility for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rely on the federal might to unseat the APC government in the Land of Honour State.

Hers words: “There is no federal might that can be greater than the people’s might. The federal government should not even try to manipulate the June 21 election. Our people will cast their ballot and their votes must count.

“The June 21 election will determine the future of this country. So, rigging the process will spell doom for the country. There is no competing alternative to Dr John Kayode Fayemi of the APC among those contesting against him.”

Members of the Ekiti State Students Union have praised the Governor Kayode Fayemi-led administration’s strides in the education sector.

The commendation by students through their local chapter in Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, countered the views of the opposition on the policies of the state government in the sector.

Led by EKSU President, Mr. Ibitola Babatope, on a visit to the Deputy Governor, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, the union noted that the faithful implementation of education and human capital development–the fourth on the Eight-Point Agenda of the administration – has “completely restored the dwindling fortune of education in the Land of Honour State.”

His words: “The unprecedented landmark achievement this government has made in the education sector is vivid to the blind and audible to the deaf and cannot be controverted by any progressive-minded person”.

Fayemi scores Ekiti high on healthcare delivery

Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has scored his administration high in the provision of qualitative and affordable healthcare.

Speaking in Ado-Ekiti at the kick off of the April 2014 National Immunization plus Days (NIPDs), Dr. Fayemi noted that vital health statistics have been upward looking since the advent of his administration in October, 2010.

Speaking through his deputy, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, the governor said his administration’s health agenda was focused on the vulnerable, comprising expectant mothers, children aged 0 to five years, the elderly and the physically-challenged.

He explained that offering health protection to expectant mothers and children was aimed at securing the future while catering for the elderly would protect the heroes that contributed to the society’s development.

Reiterating his commitment to the sustenance of maternal and child health programmes, Fayemi solicited the continued support of stakeholders to achieve the desired goals.

He said his administration’s programmes are designed to facilitate community ownership of health institutions, adding that Community Health Committees had been set up to drive the process and sustain the feedback mechanism.

Fayemi urged parents and guardians to take immunisation seriously to protect their children against deadly diseases.

He listed diseases targeted by the current round of immunisation as polio, tuberculosis, measles, yellow fever and pneumonia.

Commissioner for Health Prof. Olusola Fasubaa, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Primary HealthCare Agency, Mrs. Folake Falore, said in spite of the huge success recorded in the last exercise, the government would not relax until the safety of children is guaranteed.

In his acceptance comments, Fayemi described APC as a democratic party founded on the credo of internal democracy.

According to him, his emergence as the flag bearer of the APC showed him as having the supports of the party members and the people of the state.

He added: “If what we got today is what we get on the day of election, then the victory is sealed and delivered. But we have to do more than that. We have to go out and propagate the APC to Nigerians as the best party for our people.

In the Osun State primary, Gov Aregbesola got the backing of 269, 631 out of the 355,729 eligible party members to seek reelection.

Scores count loses as rainstorm wreaks havoc in Ado-Ekiti

Residents of Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, are counting their losses, following Sunday’s rainstorm, which blew off the roofs of many buildings.

From Ijigbo-Ajilosun to Adebayo, Olaoluwa, Basiri and Oke-Oriomi, the rainstorm wreaked havoc on residential buildings and schools.

Among the affected structures are the multi-purpose hall of the Ola-Oluwa Muslim Grammar School; the covered walkway of the Ile Abiye Hospital and electricity poles across the town.

Alhaja Sifau Musa, whose one storey building at Ayegbami Street around Olaoluwa was affected, said: “I am tired of life. Around 5pm on Sunday, the wind started blowing and blew off the roof. This is the fourth time this is happening to me. Unfortunately, I am a widow and a motor accident rendered me immobile.

“This is the fourth time this evil wind is blowing off my roof. Every time this happens, I spend over N65,000 on repairs. It happened in 2005, 2009 2011 and has happened again. I cannot afford to even feed myself, as I had an accident in 2004 and have not been working. My husband is dead and our children are not working.”

The state government sympathised with the victims, assuring them that “help is underway”.

Deputy Governor Prof. Modupe Adelabu said the State Emergency Management Agency (EKSEMA) had been directed to compile a list of victims and properties destroyed by the rainstorm.

Mrs. Adelabu, who went round the town to assess the damage, expressed surprise at its magnitude.

She said there was little or nothing anybody or the government could do to prevent such a natural disaster, other than to ensure that structures are not built on the water ways.

She urged the people to build with standard materials and patronise building professionals.

The deputy governor urged contractors and bricklayers to involve civil engineers at the planning stage of buildings for quality assurance.

She said the government has directed EKSEMA officials to go round and compile a list of victims with a view to ascertaining the damage and fashion out ways of cushioning the effects.

  • Ekiti promotes vocational studies in schools

Ekiti promotes vocational studies in schools

The Ekiti State government has restated its determination to promote vocational studies in public primary schools.

Pupils from basic schools in the 16 local government areas converged yesterday on the premises of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in Okesa, Ado-Ekiti, and displayed their vocational skills.

The occasion was the second edition of the Public Primary Schools’ Trade Fair.

At the fair were Deputy Governor Prof. Modupe Adelabu, who is the SUBEB chairman, and the governor’s wife, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, who was the mother of the day.

Osun State Deputy Governor Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori, the special guest of honour was represented by Osun SUBEB Permanent Secretary Fatai Kolawole.

Chief Julius Ajayi chaired the occasion.

Also present were Ekiti House of Assembly Deputy Speaker Taiwo Orisalade; Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese Rev. Felix Femi Ajakaye; Commissioner for Education, Science & Technology Kehinde Ojo; Commissioner for the Environment Dr. Eniola Ajayi; Commissioner for Women Affairs & Gender Empowerment Mrs. Fola Richie-Adewusi and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Alhaji Ayodele Jinadu.

The pupils displayed various handicrafts, including pots, wood carvings, local mats, hand fans and baskets, some of which were bought by the guests.

They also displayed local pastries, including Ojojo (fried water yam) and Aadun (sweetened corn powder).

The deputy governor said the promotion of entrepreneurial education in elementary schools would help “budding talents to fully realise their potentials”.

She said the fair was a forum for pupils to showcase the entrepreneurial and technical skills that were imparted in them in their various schools.

Her words: “Entrepreneurial education is aimed at exposing pupils to attitudes, behaviours and practices (outside their usual academic works) that would equip them with relevant skills to stand on their own without necessarily running after non-existing white collar jobs after leaving schools.

“Today’s exposition is a call for us to return to the old era, when emphasis was on handiwork, such as weaving, pottery, wood carving, tie and dye and knitting, among others, at the elementary level of education. The primary goal is to promote creativity and innovation through the acquisition of requisite skills”.

Mrs. Adelabu described the fair as “another trail-blazing concept designed by SUBEB under the well-focused and result-oriented administration of Governor Kayode Fayemi, to ensure that the talents and innate skills of pupils are harnessed to make them productive individuals to the development of the state and the nation from their tender ages”.

She said the administration’s investment in basic education has earned the state the “Fountain of Knowledge” appellation, adding that the Early Childhood Development Education Mega Centres established in the three senatorial districts have been adjudged the best among public educational institutions in the country.

Mrs. Fayemi hailed SUBEB for the “unique initiative”, saying it has made Ekiti a pacesetter in the Nigerian education sector.

Describing the fair as “laudable, helpful to the pupils and good for national development”, she urged SUBEB to sustain it and get her office more involved in subsequent editions.

In her goodwill message read by Kolawole, Mrs. Laoye-Tomori said: “Ekiti State is reclaiming the practical aspect of education, which the country lost to protracted military rule.”

She promised to domesticate the programme in Osun, adding that the catch-them-young approach was worthy of emulation.

The Brand Manager, Honeywell Flour Mills, Mr. Lanre Da-Silva, said governments and parents need to give pupils vocational to make them financially independent in the future.

Trophies, cash and gifts were presented to the councils that came first, second and third.

  • ‘NHIS’ll improve health care delivery’

    ‘NHIS’ll improve health care delivery’

The Ekiti State government unfolded a plan yesterday to fast-track the implementation of its health programmes, including free health care services to infants and expectant mothers.

It said it would use the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to fulfill its health obligations to residents.

Deputy Governor Prof. Modupe Adelabu spoke in her office in Ado-Ekiti while hosting a delegation led by NHIS Executive Secretary Dr. Femi Thomas.

She said the Governor Kayode Fayemi administration was determined to give every resident access to quality health care services, adding: “To provide free health care for every class of people in the society, the government has taken its free health care missions to every corner of the state. The free medical check-up and treatment for civil servants is part of the strategies to ensure that every citizen enjoys good health and contributes to the state’s growth.”

Prof. Adelabu said the government has found a veritable platform in the NHIS to fast-track its health care agenda.

Thomas, a former commissioner for Health in the state, hailed the administration’s accomplishments in the health sector, particularly on maternal and child health.

He said the administration’s free health had reduced maternal and child mortality and increased life expectancy.

Thomas said he was in the state to discuss how the state could key into NHIS programmes and the Universal Health Scheme.

He urged the government to incorporate the formal sector, such as labour unions, in the scheme.

Thomas requested for a piece of land in a good location in Ado-Ekiti, where the organisation could build its office.
