  • Sexagenarian docked over alleged theft of bread, toothpaste

    For allegedly stealing bread, toothpaste, soap and wine from a store, 62-year-old man, Lukman Babatunde, was on Monday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Babatunde, who resides on Lagos Island, is facing a count charge of stealing.

    He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye, told the court that the defendant committed the offence at 4.00p.m on March 16, at Trolleys Superstore at No. 2, Industrial Ave., Yaba.

    According to her, the defendant went to the store, posed as a customer and stole four bottles  of Black Label wine valued at N31,200.

    Olaluwoye also submitted that Babatunde stole a packet of Dettol soap worth N3, 000.

    She added that the defendant  stole six pieces of Sensodyne toothpaste valued at  N5,100, and a loaf of bread worth N300.

    Olaluwoye said the store’s Manager, Mr Taiwo Abimbola, noticed the theft through a closed-circuit television  camera, and called the police.

    “My lord, the defendant pretended to be a shopper while stuffing the stolen items into his jacket.

    “He got to the counter and paid for only a bowl of ice cream, attempting to make away with the stolen items in his jacket.

    “When he was searched, the items were recovered from him,” she said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that stealing contravenes Section 287 of the criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015,  and is punishable with a three-year jail term.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluwatoyin Oghere, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Oghere said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned until June 26 for mention.

  • Two conductors found with missing person’s phone

    Two bus conductors, Ojo Mudasiru and Ibrahim Yusuf, were yesterday arraigned at a Yaba Magistrates’ Court for alleged possession of a missing person’s phone.

    Mudasiru, 27, and Yusuf, 28, pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Modupe Olaluwoye said the defendants committed the offence on February 3, at 3am, on Morocco Road, Shomolu, Lagos.

    She alleged that the defendants stole an Infinix phone valued at N50,000, from Mr. Victor Godwin, who had been missing for two weeks.

    Olaluwoye said Godwin was reported missing by his wife two weeks ago and the police found his car parked on Morocco Road without his phone.

    “My Lord, the police were able to trace the signal of the phone to the defendants; we are still carrying out an investigation to find out exactly what happened to Godwin,” she said.

    Chief Magistrate Oluwatoyin Oghere granted the defendants N100, 000 each with two sureties each in the like sum.

    She said the sureties should be employed and show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case continues on May 8.

     

  • Two men docked for allegedly stealing cables

    Two jobless men were on Monday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing underground cables in the community where they reside.

    The accused, Michael Emmanuel, 18, and Daniel Lawal, 22, who reside at Iberekodo community in Ibeju-Lekki, near Lagos are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit felony and stealing.

    The duo, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye, told the court that the two men committed the offences on Aug. 18 at about 4.00 a.m. at Iberekodo community.

    Olaluwoye said the duo had broken into the community’s power station and dug out underground amoured cables.

    She said that a resident of the community that saw them dragging a bag containing the cable out of the station reported the incident to the head of the community.

    The prosecutor told the court that the police were yet to determine the value of the cables.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluwatoyin Oghere, granted each of the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties each in like sum.

    Oghere said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must be gainfully employed.

    She also ordered that the sureties should show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State government.

    The case was adjourned until Jan. 30, 2019 for hearing.

  • Court remands four men for allegedly killing colleague, removing heart

    A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday ordered four men to be remanded in Ikoyi Prisons for allegedly killing their colleague and removing his heart for ritual.

    They are Daniel Luka, 24, Audu Isaiah, 24, Wavi David, 20 and Ayuba Musa, 24. They are standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye, told the court that the men committed the offences on May 22 at Alasia along Oke-Ira road in Ajah, near Lagos.

    Olaluwoye alleged that the accused had been patronizing a ritualist, who had asked them for a human heart in exchange for wealth.

    She said that the accused had lured their 21-year-old brother, James Isaiah, into the bush, where they killed him with a knife and cut off his heart.

    “The police were able to trace them to their house where they had admitted killing their brother for ritual purposes.

    “The ritualist is however, still at large,” she said.

    The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 223, 233 and 165 (a) (b) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    Magistrate Oluwatoyin Oghere, ordered that the case file should be sent to the Lagos State director of public prosecutions for advice.

    She adjourned the case until Aug. 15.

  • Court remands three politicians in Lagos over alleged murder

    A Yaba Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos State on Wednesday remanded three politicians in Ikoyi Prison over alleged murder.

    The accused – Bosun Adigun, 43; Semiu Ogunbona, 58; and Sabitu Kamarudeen, 54, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.G. Oghere, ordered that the trio should be remanded in prison due to the magnitude of the alleged offences.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Modupe Olaluwoye, had told the court that the accused conspired and shot dead one Mr Nurudeen Olanase following a political disagreement.

    She said that the accused committed the offences at noon on May 12 at the Central Community Primary School, Oniwaya, Agege, Lagos.

    According to the prosecutor, the accused shot the deceased on the head with a prohibited firearm.

    “They conspired among themselves and killed the deceased because of a political disagreement they had,” she said.

    The prosecutor submitted that the offences contravened Sections 215 and 233 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    It was also reported that murder attracts death penalty.

    Counsel to the accused, Mr Tunji Akinyemi, had prayed the court to grant his clients bail in liberal terms but Oghere remanded them and ordered that the case file should be sent to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    She adjourned the case until July 11for mention.
