Super Eagles striker Moffi joins FC Porto from Nice

Nigerian striker Terem Moffi has completed a loan move to Porto from Nice, with the Portuguese club holding an option to buy the forward for €8m.

The 26-year-old Super Eagles striker finalised the transfer on Friday after both clubs reached an agreement earlier in the week.

Moffi is joining Porto on loan until the end of the season, with the option to make the move permanent set at €8m.

The deal brings an end to a difficult spell in France for the former Lorient player, who had been on medical leave since the incidents involving Nice supporters on November 30.

Porto fought off competition from several clubs, including Turkish side Besiktas, which had offered Moffi a more lucrative salary. There was also interest from teams in France and Scotland.

The Super Eagles striker chose Porto because of the sporting project and the opportunity to work under coach Francesco Farioli, who knows him from their time in Ligue 1.

Moffi has not played for Nice since November 30, following a defeat at Lorient that was overshadowed by serious incidents when players were confronted by supporters after the match.

He was subsequently removed from the first-team picture and had to take the club to a French judicial commission to force them to allow his departure.

The striker managed just two goals in 10 league appearances this season, a sharp drop from his first campaign when he finished as Nice’s top scorer with 11 goals.

Despite his club struggles, Moffi remains a recognised figure in Nigerian football.

He made his Super Eagles debut in 2021 and scored a brace in a 10-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe in 2022.

He was called up to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations as a replacement for the injured Victor Boniface, where Nigeria finished second, losing the final to hosts Ivory Coast.

Porto view Moffi as an immediate solution in attack and will have the option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.

Eyes on Moffi as Nice face-off Monaco

Nigeria International striker Term Moffi is expected to be in the thick of action tomorrow for Nice away to Monaco in the latest edition of the Derby de la Cote d’Azur slated for  Stade Louis II on match day seven of the Ligue 1 campaign.

Last weekend, Les Monegasques dropped to fourth in the table with a 3-1 loss at Lorient, while Nice settled for a 1-1 draw with Paris FC, putting them in 12th  place.

It is rarely straightforward with Monaco, and their performance last weekend was a case in point as they struggled against another newly promoted club, with discipline being an issue, spending more than half of that match a man down.

Tomorrow, they will try to avoid losing consecutive league matches for the first time all year, with their only two defeats in the campaign so far coming away from home.

Meanwhile they have a chance to win their first four Ligue 1 home fixtures this weekend for the first time since the 2003-04 season, when they wound up third in the table.

Adi Hutter’s men have often been their own worst enemy domestically in 2025-26, conceding the joint second-most penalties thus far (three).

Defensively, this team have not looked comfortable, as they are one of two teams in the French top-flight that have yet to collect a clean sheet this season, with the other being Paris FC.

At Stade Louis II, though, they always seem to come up with some magic, going unbeaten in their previous 11 Ligue 1 home outings in the Principality, with 11 of their 14 goals this season coming at home.

Scoring 50th Ligue 1 goal makes me special, says Moffi

Time and time again, Terem Moffi, the OGC Nice’s Nigeria international  striker, has proved that he can score goals in anybody’s company. Totalling over 180 goals  across clubs in Lithuania, Belgium and France, the 24-year-old, who last weekend scored a landmark 50th goal in the French Ligue 1, shared  the joy of the moment in an exclusive conversation with Sports  Editor, MORAKINYO ABODUNRIN

OGC Nice’s Nigeria international striker  Terem Moffi  believes  his 50th  goal in the French Ligue  has given him a sense of accomplishment  even as he looks forward to scoring more for both  club and country – despite that fleeting showmanship at the last Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

Though weaned on the streets of Calabar, Moffi has left no one in doubt about his proficiency in front of the goalposts since  he began  his adventure in Europe  in Lithuania, first with Kauno Zalgiris, from  where he  eventually joined Riteriai. He would  score 20 goals in 29 leagues games for Riteriai before  being  transferred to Belgian club Kortrijk in January 2020, and scored an impressive five goals in just  nine games en route the French Ligue 1 side Lorient  on 1st  October 2020.

With Lorient, Moffi cracked  34 goals in 87 Ligue 1 games (35 goals  in 90 games in all competitions) before moving to  Nice  on the last day of the January Transfer Window in 2023. In his first season (2022/23) with Nice, he scored just six goals  in 16 Ligue 1 matches  but has scored an impressive 10 goals in 23 Ligue 1 games in the ongoing  campaign.

Last weekend, he scored his 10th  goal of the season and  his fourth since  returning from the AFCON 2023 where he helped  the Super Eagles to win the silver medal, but  that particular goal in a shock 2-1 home loss to relegation-threatened  FC  Nantes was significantly  his 50th  since he arrived in the French League.

“Though, I am not the first Nigerian to reach this mark (50th) in the French league because  I have read reports that John Utaka scored 59 goals while Victor Ikpeba scored 55,” the meticulous  24-year-old Moffi  told Nation Sports  in an exclusive interview. “How does it make me  feel? It gives me a feeling of accomplishment, especially as I am being mentioned along with great names like John Utaka and Victor Ikpeba.

“Having said this,  I will like to point out that I didn’t even realise that I was approaching the fifty goal mark until the eve of the game  when  my eldest brother told me on phone to go and make it fifty.  I didn’t understand what he was driving at.

“He had to explain that I had forty-nine goals going into last weekend’s game.”

Incidentally, Moffi has been in a rich vein of form with an impressive  four goals in six Ligue 1 matches since after the 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, where he sat out most of the matches until that  semi-finals against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

“Secret (of scoring goals)?” the 24-year-old in his usual frankness asked rhetorically. “There is no secret.

“The difference is that during the AFCON I hardly had playing time. I had less than fifteen minutes playing time throughout. If what happened after I was introduced into the semi-final  game against South Africa didn’t happen, very few people would have remembered that I even played in the AFCON.

“I am talking about the red card issued to the South African defender after he hacked me down to prevent me from scoring what could possibly have been the winning goal and the first penalty I opted to take and scored for the team during the penalty shootout.

“In contrast,  in my club I play week after week and get the chances to score and I score. There is therefore no secret but a matter of opportunity,” noted a  fond admirer of both Chelsea’s Ivorian legend Didier Drogba and former Arsenal and Manchester United’s Dutch striker, Robin Van Persie.

For anyone who saw Moffi  during his formative years, especially  when he  competed for a spot in  the national  U-17  team  with the likes of  Napoli forward and African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen,  and Milan’s Samuel Chukwueze, it’s not a surprise  that he has turned out  to be crafty as a fox  in front of the goalposts because his scoring intelligence is indeed second to none amongst his contemporaries.

“Growing up, I  had great admiration for Didier Drogba and Robin Van Persie and I wanted to be like them; they inspired me a lot,” he further said.“As for Messi, Ronaldo and Mbappe, these are great players  and I have a lot of respect for them. I have played against Messi and Mbappe a number of times while for Ronaldo our paths have never crossed. They all remain players that rank among the very best.”

As some said, no two strikers are the same and different  strikers  have different  drives  behind their  proficiency as such Moffi  is not an exemption to the rule as he claimed  scoring goals makes him feel like a lion.

“What motivates me is simply the joy I give the fans when I score and when we win games, be it at club or national team level,”  he explained. “No feeling equals hearing the fans screaming your name or you hear your name over the stadium loud speakers.

“This kind of turns you into a lion,” he affirmed as he exhaled on  the performance of the Super Eagles  at the 2023 AFCON in Cote  d’Ivoire.

He continued: “Before the AFCON, very few people gave us a chance and that was understandable.  Even we the players knew we were not getting it right and we were determined to improve.  The coaches worked hard and found a formula that gave the team stability.

“We got our bearing and made it to the final. We were disappointed that we did not win the final game but we appreciate the government and people of Nigeria who celebrated us even after we came out second best.

“As for my personal performance,  with the little playing time I got I forced the South Africans to get a red card and that took away the pressure we were under before that. I went ahead to score in the penalty shootout, which we won and for two weeks that modest contribution to our victory was trending online. I can never forget that best (part),” he disclosed.

Noted for his likeable personality and humane disposition, Moffi is not unmindful of the importance of the national  honours bestowed on him  and  his Super Eagles teammates after  the second-place finish at the AFCON, adding that it has placed on them additional responsibilities.

“National honours are not honours that people get every day; they are not commonplace,” he noted. “They are very significant. While they can open doors for people who are so honoured, they also place responsibility on the person honoured.

“I see myself as an ambassador of the country, not just on the football field  but off it. It is an honour I treasure very much together with the land and house promised by the government.

“It is a call for the entire team to work harder and win bigger laurels for the country.”

Yet Moffi has his own personal targets  both on and off the  field as he sets his eyes  on playing in some other hallowed grounds in Europe  as well as  helping the not-so-privileged in his  native Ogoja, in the northern part of Cross Rivers State in Nigeria.

“The English league holds a special attraction for me,” the  former apprentice at the Buckswood Football Academy at Hastings, East Sussex,  further told NationSport. “When I was growing up back in Nigeria, we followed the English league and supported one team or the other.

“It is still the same situation today. I also like the other big European leagues. I am a realist and believe that where I go after Nice will depend on the circumstances of the time.”

Though enjoying  cosy living  and cosmopolitan  outlook in France, Moffi is not oblivious of the circumstances of his  ‘poor cousins’ consequently he has instituted a medical outreach  to cater for their welfare.

“The medical outreach has come to stay and it will be a yearly thing,” he assured. “That is the least we can do in memory of my grandfather, who himself was also a footballer.

“Many people do not know that I am a third generation footballer in my family.  After my grandfather who played for his alma mater, Mary Knoll College,  Ogoja, and for the Ogoja Town Team, then known as The Rangers, my father played for his University and professionally in the Nigerian league (Rangers International of Enugu).

“The main reason for this outreach is to keep the flame of reaching out to others burning. My grandfather in his life time raised and trained over eighty children who were not his children.

“My dad and mom are continuing with that trend. I believe my grandfather deserves the honour we are giving unto him,” adding that his immediate family is certainly his  most prized possession.

He disclosed: “Nothing makes me happier than seeing people around me happy. That thing that will make me cry is the thing that  hurts my family. I can go to any length to confront anything that threatens their well-being.”

While some of his Super Eagles teammates have settled  down  into marital life, Moffi still keeps that aspect of his life close to his chest, saying  the world will indeed know when  he will tie the proverbial knots.

“When the time comes for the wedding bells, you will be one of the first to hear,” he sounded.

Super Eagles attacker, Terem Moffi netted his 10th  league goal of the season for OGC Nice in their 2-1 home loss to Moses Simon’s Nantes FC in a French Ligue One Matchweek 27 tie played yesterday.

Moffi who  saw action for the entire 90 minutes, scored Nice’s equaliser in the 72nd  minute after Matthis Abline’s 19th  minute effort had put the visitors in the lead.

But Egypt  international  striker, Mostafa Mohamed, put Nantes back in the front from the penalty spot four minutes after Moffi’s goal and  that was how the game ended.

For Moffi, yesterday’s strike was  his fourth goal since returning from the AFCON.  Significantly,  it is his 50th  goal in the French top flight league. His rating in the was 7.2. He still has a chance of matching the 18 league goals he scored last season.

The 24-year-old  Moffi has hit double digit goals  three times in  the past four seasons in France since he left FK Kortrijk of Belgium for Lorient in the 2020-21 season.

However, Nice’s poor form in  the second round of the league season continued with the loss and they have slipped to the fifth with 43 points from 27 games while the away win bolstered Nantes’ determined effort to scale the relegation zone. They are in the 14th  spot with 28 points.

OGC Nice must regroup quickly as they face Reims next on Sunday hoping to return to winning ways.

Elsewhere in Ligue 1,Lyon’s  Gift Orban was available for 72 minutes for his ninth game of the season since his move from Gent in January, in their 1-1 home draw against Reims.

AFCON-enforced absence of Moffi, others  blamed for  Nice’s woes

Nice head coach, Francesco Farioli , has blamed the participation of Terem Moffi and three other key players of his team at the recently concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations for the team’s current inconsistency in the French Ligue One.

Nice was top of the league table in November but they have slipped to the fifth spot with 40 points from 24 games with 15 points off current pacesetters, Paris Saint Germain (PSG) after the weekend game.

The club lost 2-1 again to Toulouse on Sunday, their fifth loss in just eight games from when the AFCON began on January 13th  in Cote D’Ivoire till now and Farioli in his post-match press conference blamed their current struggles on the hangover of the Africa’s football fiesta.

Le Gym had four key players at the AFCON. They are Jeremie Boga (Cote d’Ivoire ), Terem Moffi (Nigeria), Youcef Atal (Algeria),  and Hicham Boudaoui (Algeria) and Farioli hinted that it may take a while for his team to fully get their rhythm due to the players’ mental and physical exhaustion at the AFCON.

“After the Lens match, at the end of the first half of the season, I knew what difficulties we could face between January and February with so many absentees, with the African Cup of Nations, with the mental and physical overload on certain players,” Farioli told journalists.

“We need to get back into the swing of things because we finally have a full squad. We need to recover from these two difficult months. Everything is still to play for, everything is still open. We can still achieve our goals. That’s what motivates me, that’s what I believe in and that’s what I’ll be telling the players.”

The Italian tactician also blamed individual mistakes for their latest loss to Toulouse  but  defended the substitution of Moffi for Gaetan Laborde in the 64th  minute among other sweeping changes made by him in the second half of the encounter.

He said: “Individual errors are part and parcel of football, and we shouldn’t focus on them. With the two substitutions, we wanted to bring in a new mental and physical energy.

“Terem Moffi’s two months without training started to show in a very physical match like this, with lots of duels and open-field situations. It was becoming difficult for him to keep up the high-intensity action. And as for Melvin Bard, we had conceded three or four dangerous situations on his flank so, likewise, we wanted to bring in some fresh blood.

“That’s how we prepared for the game. We knew we were going to face a team that was going to come at us hard and we wanted to have Terem Moffi up front so that we could play into the space they left open. We controlled the ball well and once again created a lot of chances. The only regret is that we didn’t get off to the right start early in the second half.”

Nice will be hoping to win their second game since January 13th  when they host Montpellier on Friday in a Matchday 25 tie.

Super Eagles’ attacker, Terem Moffi broke his three-match goal drought for Nice with a stellar performance against Toulouse but his team lost the game 2-1. The Super Eagles forward, who had been enduring a dry spell in front of goal, found his scoring touch in the eighth minute.

Prior to his goal on yesterday, Moffi’s last scoring moment for his club occurred on December 20, 2023, when he netted a brace against Lens, just before departing for AFCON duty.

The goal not only relieved the pressure on him but also provided a much-needed boost for his team.

Moffi has been a key contributor for Nice this season, showcasing his scoring prowess in 20 appearances for the club as he was rated 7.2 in yesterday’s Ligue 1 match.

The striker has found the back of the net seven times, demonstrating his clinical finishing and ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

In addition to his goal-scoring exploits, Moffi has also been instrumental in setting up his teammates, providing three  assists over the course of the campaign.

In another French Ligue game, Akor Adams failed to score again but Montpellier drew 2-2 with Strasbourg. Adams has played in 22 games and has scored seven goals. He was removed in the 81st minute.

Super Eagles winger, Moses Simon featured in his 20th  game of the season for Nantes but they lost the fixture 2-0 at home to Metz. Simon has scored three goals with five assists.

Elsewhere  in Germany, Bayer Leverkusen extended their lead atop the German Bundesliga to 10 points with 64 points from 24 games following their 2-0 away win at FC Cologne.

TEREM MOFFI: We came here to win the trophy, nothing less

In this interview conducted by The Nations’ Taofeek Babalola at Super Eagles’ hotel, Pullman hotel, Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria and Nice of France youngish striker Terem Moffi shed light on Eagles new found form and resurgence at Africa’s biggest soccer event, the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Nigeria’s Super Eagles gave us a glimpse of what to expect in the Group A match against host country, Cote’ d’Ivoire, what was the atmosphere like before that important match?

It was a good game, we went to the game with good tactics and we executed it perfectly and we won. It was good for us.

Okay, it’s a tense game but you went away with 1-0 win? How would you describe the atmosphere?

The atmosphere in the stadium was crazy. We played the host nation and they came out to support. It was really tensed and you could feel it, even on the bench. We are professional and we knew how to deal with such atmosphere and we executed it perfectly.

The team is very young. How can you describe the unity among the team?

We are like brothers here and we are like family. We have a mix of young and old players. We are like family where you have older brothers and younger brother.

Now that you are now in the final playing same host country, what is the team’s target?

We came here with an objective to win the tournament and we will try as much as possible to achieve it.

It’s being good for you in your club, Nice, how can you describe the season so far?

It has being great season so far and I believe I could do better. Looking back, I have to be grateful for everything, without it, I won’t be in the Super Eagles today.

Why did you choose football as a career?

At certain point in your life, you realise that you got a talent, you could feel the feeling with this talent and you believe you could do amazing things with this talent. I realised this early and I just follow my passion.

And what was your parent reaction when you tell them about your dream career.

They knew from way back that I wanted to be a footballer. I’m not a school person and they supported me like 100% they supported me.

How can you describe the support from your family?

Their support has been massive from day one. They have always been there, taking me to scouting programmes, taking me to training sessions, they have been supportive.

There was a time at the youth level, Under-17, that you didn’t make the final list to the World Cup. Where you discourage?

I wasn’t discouraged. If you can’t make it at the Under 17 level, it’s not the end of the word.  Not playing at U-17 level shouldn’t be a setback. At the U-17 level, you were still like 16 years or 17 years, you still get a life in front of you. Not every player who made it at the U-17 makes it to the national level or becomes a professional. You just have to be focused and do what you have to do.

What would you have become if not football?

At a time, I wanted to be a lawyer but I don’t think that would have worked out. I would have still got something somewhere. I don’t know.

What do you at your leisure time?

I watch movies, play video games, play with my family, and read a book now and then.

    What is your favourite food?

I love pounded yam and Egusi or groundnut soup

    What is your favourite car?

    G-wagon

Who is your football role model?

I’m a fan of Cristiano Ronaldo, but there are lots of great players like Messi and others.

What is your expectation for the future in the next three years?

My focus is now and not thinking about the next three years. That’s not for me to do now. What if it doesn’t happen to you, you get discourage? I’m focusing on today.

There are several reports linking you to a move to the Premiership and Laliga. What is the situation of things?

To be honest, there’s nothing like that. I am not focusing on this and I’m focusing on my club.
