Faleke, Audu’s son invited by DSS

It has been confirmed that the Kogi State deputy governor-elect, Hon. James Abiodun Faleke was invited by the Department of State Security, Abuja, for yet undisclosed reasons.

An aide to Faleke confirmed to our correspondent that Faleke, along with Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, eldest son of the late Prince Abubakar Audu, reported at the DSS headquarters in Abuja early Saturday morning.

Speaking under the condition of anonymity, the aide said Faleke’s invitation by the DSS might not be unconnected with statements credited to him that he will be unavailable for swearing-in as deputy governor of Kogi State on January 27.

The Director, Media and Publicity of Audu/Faleke Campaign Organisation, Hon Duro Meseko who also confirmed the invitation and detention said he was surprised when Faleke and Audu were still being kept in an isolated office till yesterday evening.

His words: “I am surprised my principal and the eldest son of our political leader, Mohammed, are still being kept as I speak with you which is 4pm. What could be responsible for this ill treatment by the DSS? Or could they be acting the intimidation script? Trying to armtwist them into abandoning the sacred mandate freely given to the Audu/Faleke team by the generality of Kogi people?

“Let me make it abundantly clear that our mandate is sacred and no amount of of technical detention, intimidation and harassment would shake our resolve to get justice through the judiciary.”

Pressed further on whether the presidency had any connection with their arrest, Meseko said, “I refuse to believe that the presidency has hands in the arrest, but we may not rule out the fact that the powers that be must have wielded their influence in the arrest, but we are not pertubed over the development, because we believe that God will ultimately vindicate us”.

Faleke had vowed to be deputy to the Kogi governor-elect, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, insisting that he remains the rightful person to have assumed the position, following the demise of Abubakar Audu, at the verge of being declared winner of the November 21, 2015 governorship election in the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was to later declare the election inconclusive, paving way for the emergence of Bello, who was first runner-up at the APC governorship primary.

Faleke’s petition on the matter is presently before the Kogi State governorship election petition tribunal.

I ‘ll fight infrastructure battle in Bauchi, says APC candidate

Bauchi State All Progressive  Congress (APC) governorship candidate   Mohammed Abubakar has promised to fight the infrastructure battle in the state, if elected as governor. The flag bearer said that his administration will complete the Kafin-Zaki dam project.

Mohammed, who expressed concern over the abandoned project, said athe  legal, political and social issues militating against the project implementation  will be resolved.

The former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice spoke with reporters in Bauchi, the state capital. He said: “I know that, beside geographical issues canvassed in the building of the dam, the project has been  over-politicised and the controversy surrounding the implementation blown out of proportion.”

The dam is located in Ganjuwa  Local  Government Area. The project started in the Second Republic when Alhaji Shehu Shagari was the |President. But, it was abandoned. Therefore,  it has become a major issue of campaign during elections.

Abubakar said: “I can assure you that the APC  government at state and national levels will sort that out by bringING all stakeholders to a round-table discussion and allow each to give convincing reasons. At the end,we will have an upper hand because millions of people will benefit from the project.

“We should genuinely allow the people to reason with us that the project is not meant for Bauchi State alone, but for the people of Yobe, Kano, Jigawa, Gombe, Plateau and Borno states. Apart from getting drinking water from the dam, there will be irrigation, fishing and relevant cottage industries will come up to process farm produce for export.”

He added: “This will not only provide food for millions of families, it will create jobs and generate wealth, especially for the youth and  this will certainly reduce crimes in the area to the barest minimum”.

Mohammed also reiterated that his campaign will be issue-based, adding that it will not be characterised by mudslinging.

The flag bearer said: “Nigerians want positive changes in their lives. Bauchi people deserve the good things of life such as potable water, functional health facilities and good roads that will link them to bigger towns to sale their farm produce.

‘The APC will provide additional resources that will enable us give quality education even in remote areas for the children of peasant farmers.”

On security, Mohammed observed that bad governance will always create ill-wind that will blow nobody any good. He added: “Our security challenges will be critically looked into and all aggrieved people will express their grievances that will be amicably settled.

“We will do everything humanly possible to stabilise the economy of the state as part of our top priorities. The welfare of the people, agriculture, health, and education will be on the front burner.”

  • Yuguda not sponsoring me, says Bauchi APC candidate

The former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice   in Bauchi State  and the All Progressive Congress governorship candidate (APC), Mohammed Abubakar has rejected the claim that Governor Isa Yuguda introduced him to politics.

He told reporters in Bauchi, the state capital, that the governor has insulted him and his followers.

The APC chieftain said: ”I have never had any nonsense more  than that. I became the Commissioner for Justice and the Attorney-General in 1990. Then, Yuguda was a staff of the Federal Mortgage Bank and he was not the governor of Bauchi State . “There was no way I could have been his Attorney-General and he  did not introduce me to politics as alleged  in the media.  There is no blatant lie more than that”.

Abubakar added: “I contested for the Senate and everybody thought he was supporting me in PDP. But, you saw what happened. If Yuguda was my friend and sponsor, he would have sponsored me to go to the Senate. He started by playing a trick when we were supposed to go for the completion of the term to fill the vacant seat of Bauchi South after Senator Bala Mohammed was appointed as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)Minister.”

The flag bearer, who represented Bauchi State at the Constituent Assembly, recalled that a three-man Appeal Committee was set up by  the party  visited Bauchi to resolve the crisis generated by the outcome of the APC primaries.

He said people were jubilating on the streets when he emerged as the flag bearer.

He refuted the allegation that the shadow poll was rigged, stressing that, when it was investigated by the Appeal Committee, the panel affirmed the result.

Abubakar said: “The election was the freest; it was transparent. The election was conducted in an enclosed Lawn Tennis Court on the premises of Zaranda Hotel. There was only one entrance into the venue, manned by the police, soldiers and other security operatives to ensure a smooth process.”

The flag bearer also denied that there was over-voting, adding that no aspirant raised the issue before the panel.

He stressed: “There was  no over voting. The process was conducted in the presence of everybody. But,  when agents of other aspirants  raised the issue of excess votes, the electoral committee, before it announced the result, recounted the votes and discovered what went wrong. They unanimously agreed and corrected the figures on the result sheet.”

Sources close to the party chairman, Alhaji Nana, said that Appeal Committee has written its report saying “ it found anything wrong with the election.”

Abubakar said: “Already, the APC national leadership  has  recognised me as the governorship candidate.

“I’m the sole governorship candidate of the APC in Bauchi. There can’t be two candidates and I’m the only candidate of the party, which the national headquarters of the party has confirmed. I have done this to prove to the world that the people of Bauchi             State are with me and the APC.

“Three aspirants congratulated me.  Others pledged their support to me and I am making efforts to reach out to other aspirants so that we can have a united and formidable  party to defeat the PDP.”

Abubakar said the allegation that he is being sponsored by Yuguda is false, advising his supporters to ignore rumours.

He said: “Since I lost an election under the PDP, which Yuguda pretended to be supporting me, but suddenly left me midway, I have had nothing to do with him , apart from greeting, which is part of my religious duties. Yuguda has nothing to do with me, alhough I respect him a lot as my governor.”

Terrorism: Security Council stops ethnic registration, deportation

The National Security Council meeting presided by President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday stopped the registration and deportation of non-indigenes in any part of the country.

To check the onslaught of Boko Haram, some state governments have reportedly commenced the registration of non-indigenes in their states.

Briefing State House correspondents at the end of the meeting at the Presidential Villa, the Director General of State Security Service (SSS), Ita Ekpeyong, maintained that such deportation and registration are more dangerous than Boko Haram itself.

Ekpeyong, who was accompanied by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, said that Nigerians are free to settle anywhere they like.

He said that the Council of State meeting will be held next week to discuss the issues.

He said: “The IGP has told us what was discussed at the meeting, the fight against Boko Haram, the efforts made by government to rescue the Chibok girls and the issue of deportation, registration of Nigerians in states of the federation. We regard this as even more potent than Boko Haram.”

“The Council discussed in detail the issue of registration of Nigerians in any part of the country, being subjected to registration, being subjected to deportation, being taken away from one part of the country to the other.

“The Council discussed the reaction by some groups in Kano State and other parts of the country. We observe that this threat was more potent than Boko Haram and could disintegrate the country.

“And we take this very seriously, for people to deport people, for people to take people from one place to the other, for registration of indigenes no matter where they are. No matter where they are they are free to settle anywhere they like.

“The Council resolved that the issue of registration of Nigerians anywhere in the country and deportation should stop forthwith. To re-emphasis the importance, the President has attached to this that is why he asked the IGP and myself to address the press, this must stop forthwith.”
