  • Man admits using bottle to tear another’s face

    An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State will on Dec. 11 sentence a 20-year-old man who used a broken bottle to tear the face of another.

      The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, gave the date following guilty plea by Mohammed Bashir arraigned on a count charge of assault.

    Kubeinje remanded the accused in prison pending review of the facts of the case and sentencing.

    The Prosecutor,  Insp. Lucky Ihiehie, had told the court that Bashir  tore the face of Mr Abdulahi Abubakar  during a quarrel at 6.00p.m. on Oct. 26,  at  Gidan Pali, Ojota Main Garrage, Lagos.

    He noted that the offence contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offence is punishable with three years’ jail term.

  • Suspected kidnap kingpin arrested in Kogi

    The Army yesterday said it arrested leader of a kidnap gang, Mohammed Bashir, in Kogi State.

    Bashir allegedly killed Corp. Mamman of the Army Headquarters Special Forces.

    The Director of Public Relations, Brig.-Gen Texas Chukwu, said Bashir was arrested by troops of the Headquarters Command after a raid on their hideouts at Irovochinomi and Egee Communities in Okene council.

    A statement by Gen. Chukwu said: “In continuation of intensive patrol across the states, troops of Headquarters Commands, Army Record, supported by Army Headquarters Special Forces, on March 11, raided Irovochinomi and Egee communities in Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State.

    “A prime suspect, Mohammed Bashir, a member of the gang which allegedly killed Corp. Mamman of Army Headquarters Special Forces on February 27, was arrested. Two AK-47 rifles (58008731) and 45 rounds of 7.62mm special was recovered from him.

    “In a follow-up operation, two other AK 47- rifles were also recovered. The public are again reminded that the operation is still on.”

  • Army arrests kidnap kingpin in Kogi

    The Nigerian Army said it has arrested a member of a kidnap gang who allegedly killed Corporal Mamman of the Army Headquarters Special Forces.

    The Army Director of Public Relations, Brig. Gen Texas Chukwu, said in a statement that the suspect named Mohammed Bashir was arrested by troops of Headquarters Command after a raid on their hideouts at Irovochinomi and Egee communities in Okene local government area of Kogi State.

    The statement said: “In continuation of intensive patrol across the states following a report on criminal hideouts, on Sunday 11 March 2018, troops of Headquarters Commands Army Record supported by Army Headquarters Special Forces conducted a raid at Irovochinomi and Egee communities within Okene local government area of Kogi State.

    “During the operation one of the prime suspect by name Mohammed Bashir, a member of the gang that allegedly killed Corporal Mamman of Army Headquarters Special Forces on 27 February 2018, was apprehended and the following items were recovered, two AK 47 rifles with registration number 58008731 and 45 rounds of 7.62mm special was recovered.

    “A follow up on the operation led to recovery of additional two AK 47 rifles. Pictures of the suspect and the items recovered are attached. The public are once again reminded that the operation is still in progress.”

    Broadcaster accused of murder granted N2m bail

    An Oyo State High Court  on Tuesday  granted bail to an Ibadan-based broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat,  and four others accused  of  the murder  of a teenager.

    Justice M.I.  Sule granted  each defendant  bail in the sum of  N2 million  with two sureties in like sum.

    Sule said one of the sureties must be a civil servant on Grade Level 14 while the other must be a business man.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)  reports that the case was first heard at an Iyaganku Magistrates’  Court on Aug.  1.

    It was, however, transferred to the high court as the magistrates’ court had  no jurisdiction to hear the case. .

    Hamzat , 37;  Idowu Ibrahim , 27;  Mohammed Bashir, 31;  Taiwo Olaronke ,23;  and Yusuf  Toheeb Ajisafe, 23, were all arraigned  on a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.

    The Prosecutor, Insp Sunday Fatola,  told the court that the defendants  conspired  among themselves to commit murder.

    Fatola alleged that  the defendants unlawfully  caused the death of one Peter, 17, by inflicting an injury on his head and body.

    He said Peter, who  had been an inmate at a home owned by the  Make a Future Alive Initiative, an NGO   owned by Hamzat,  was found dead at the home.

    Fatola said the alleged offences were   committed on July 21  at about 4. a.m.  at the home at Oremeji Agugu, Ibadan.

    He said the offences  contravened  Sections  324 and 316 and were punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol .II, Laws of Oyo State,  2000.

    The plea of  the defendants  was not taken by the court.
