  • 2019 elections: IFES pledges support for INEC

The International Foundation for Electoral Systems ( IFES ) says it will give every necessary support to the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) in its quest to achieve credible elections in 2019.

Mr Seray Jah, IFES Electoral Management Expert, said this on Thursday in Calabar, at a Workshop organised by Board of Survey and Technical Equipment Acquisition Committee ( BOSTEAC ) for Store Officers of INEC across the country.

“We are very happy and privileged to support INEC in its stride to enhance credible elections in Nigeria come 2019.”

He said that the objective of the workshop was to seek a unified standard of procedures for store management in order to enhance INEC operations, particularly in the build up to the 2019 elections.

According to him, this has become necessary in order to ensure that all store officers of INEC act in uniformity and in conformity with global best practices.

Speaking, Chairman of BOSTEAC, Mr Mohammed Haruna said the commission was working on ways to making store officers more commited and efficient in the discharge of their responsibilities.

“This is in view of their strategic importance in the conduct elections, especially in the handling of sensitive and non sensitive materials.”

Haruna said that the commission was expected to start taking delivery of materials for the 2019 elections, adding that this would increase the volume of activities for store officers.

“I therefore urge you to take this workshop very seriously and to be committed, and be diligent in your duties, so that our department will excel.”

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Cross River, Dr Frankland Briyai, described the role of store officers in the commission as very critical to the success of the 2019 elections.

“This workshop is very crucial to the success of 2019 elections. If you are working in the store and you do not have a good knowledge of the equipment in the store, you may mislead the commission and put it in jeopardy.”

He encouraged them to always be proud of their work and remain focused, adding that the present INEC was committed to doing the right thing.

The two-day workshop was being sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development ( USAID ).

  • NASENI vows to tackle equipment maintenance challenges in Nigeria

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) says it will intensify efforts to address challenges of equipment maintenance and local sourcing of essential parts to strengthen national self-reliance.

NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Mohammed Haruna said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

Haruna said that such efforts were important in addressing the needs of educational institutions, hospitals, research institutes and industries in the nation.

He said that the agency had over the years made modest achievements that rubbed on national development directly in some broad sectors including education, power and agriculture among others.

He told NAN that some specific projects of the agency included the establishment of National Nanotechnology as the forth leg of national development policy on Science and Technology.

Haruna said the agency had also established nine development institutes, developed efficient Deep Well hand pump for water solution and Centrifugal Pumps for irrigation purposes.

He said that NASENI also designed and built a mobile cassava grater, rice thrasher and many other agricultural products as well as table top seed oil mill.

He said that the mill was designed through reverse engineering for extracting of oil from seeds groundnut, cashew, palm kernel, neem seed, among others.

According to him, reverse engineering involves taking an object apart to see how it works in order to duplicate or enhance the object.

Nassarawa farmers urge govt. to ensure timely distribution of fertilisers

Some farmers in Nasarawa State have appealed to the government at all level to ensure early distribution of fertilisers and other farm inputs to farmers in order to boost their productivity.

The farmers made the appeal on Tuesday in Toto, Toto Local Government Area of the state.

They said that the timely distribution of fertilisers to farmers would facilitate efforts to improve food production and boost food security in the state and the country at large.

One of the farmers, Mr. Mohammed Haruna, said that the importance of early distribution of fertilisers to farmers could never be over-emphasised, particularly in efforts to enhance the country’s development.

“As we are all aware, no society can survive without agriculture; farming is the major source of livelihood to many members of our society.

“Agriculture will not only provide food, fight poverty, hunger and unemployment but it will also improve the revenue base of Nigeria and the living standards of its citizens, while boosting the country’s socio-economic development.

“For farmers in the state to have bumper harvests in the 2017 farming season, I hereby appeal to the state government to ensure early and timely distribution of fertilisers and other inputs to the farmers,’’ he said.

Another farmer, Samson Audu, who noted that most farmers in the state were subsistent farmers, urged the government at all level to make available fertilisers to them at affordable prices in order to assuage their plight.

He also called for the early and timely distribution of fertilisers and other inputs to the farmers.

He, however, commended Gov. Tanko Al-Makura for providing the farmers with fertilisers at subsidised rates in the 2016 cropping season.

Mr. Ibrahim Dauda, a farmer, also urged the government to promptly provide fertilisers and other farm inputs to farmers at affordable prices so as to boost food production in the state and the country at large.

  • Re: As we crucify Nyako

SIR: Mohammed Haruna’s piece in The Nation of April 24 titled “As we crucify Nyako…” is a resource material for the dust-bin.

I have nothing against Nyako and his friend, Mohammed Haruna but I urge those close to them to always admonish them with the mantra of Martin Luther King Jnr, that ‘’we must learn that to passively accept an unjust system is to co-operate with that system and thereby become a participate in its evil’’.

While the editorial of The Nation unequivocally condemned in strong terms Nyako’s needless and reckless memo, Mohammed Haruna wrote to coat the devilish memo with silent and conspicuous approbation. This man could not even condemn the lugubrious and devastating trade of those who kill in the name of education and religion in his piece. To him nothing is wrong with the satanic trade but something is wrong with government’s intervention to end terrorism. All he could do is to manipulate stories to paint ‘MEND’ as the real terrorist invading part of northern Nigeria.

I can’t understand why he wrote – ‘’instead of support, Nyako… has been suffering from splendid isolation – indeed worse’’.

What type of support was he talking about; to sink Nigeria in the ocean of disintegration or support to spread the content of the malicious memo?

Nigerians want to know what he meant.

It is shocking to note that the man could not find space to vehemently deprecate the on-going transmutation of northern Nigeria into a huge slaughter slab by men whose heart belong to the devil. To the likes of Mohammed and Nyako, the anti-terror war is geared towards depleting the numbers of voters in the north. Both men want the federal government to fold its arms and watch with amusement while the children of Sodom and Gomorrah have it all to themselves.

His call for ‘sincere dialogue’ at the end of the piece is laughable. Perhaps he was not in town when government made several attempts to dialogue and the offer was rejected by those agents of doom. As a lover of peace, I urge him to carry on with his own ‘sincere dialogue’ for peace to reign in the north.

As we crucify Nyako, we must do so with ruthless and brute conscience; we must do so, not on cross but with chains of odium.

  • Agency needs $9.6m to double solar capacity

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) needs $96 million (N15.36 billion) to double the 7.5 megawatts (MW)/annum production capacity, Executive Vice Chairman Mohammed Haruna has said.

He said NASENI could produce about 20MW yearly, adding that the agency’s constraint was funding.

Haruna addressed reporters on Monday at NESENI’s solar panel manufacturing plant in Karshi, Abuja.

NASENI, Haruna said, had been dependent on paltry annual budgetary allocation.

He said: “We always go cap-in-hand and we always get the least in the envelop budget. That is what is happening. Our statutory funding has never been realised. To expand and double the capacity of this (7.5MW), for example, to 15MW, we will need about $96 million.”

The agency chief said to produce the solar set, NASENI neeeds partners.
