  • Yobe South: I remain authentic PDP senatorial candidate – Hassan

The Senator representing Yobe South Senatorial District under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mohammed Hassan, popularly called DEMBU has laid claims that he remained the most authentic candidate elected to fly the flag of the party in next year’s general elections.

The Nation reports that both Sen. Mohammed Hassan and Former Minister of Police Affairs, Adamu Maina Waziri emerged as candidates of the party at two parallel senatorial primary elections that were held in Potiskum on Tuesday.

But Sen. Mohammed Hassan has insisted that the team that conducted his election was “more genuine and authentic than any other character that is claiming to be a candidate of the party for the senatorial seat”.

According to him, four, out of the five man electoral committee sent from the PDP National headquarters including the chairman and the secretary of the committee conducted his election in the full observance of INEC and security protection.

“I can’t imagine that some characters are laying claims of been elected as candidate for Yobe South senatorial seat. As far as I am concerned, I have been authentically and genuinely returned as the candidate of the party in an election that took place under a very fair and transparent process.

“I want you to note that out of the five members of the electoral committee of the PDP that came from Abuja, four including the Chairman and the Secretary presided over my election. I want to ask, who did the other election. In my own opinion, there was only one election which I am declared the winner,” Sen. Mohammed said.

On his part, Adamu Main Waziri could not answer my calls or respond to a text message I sent to him.

The Nation recalled that at the two parallel primaries held at Idrissa Cinima, Adamu Waziri emerged winner with a wide margin of 341 votes followed by Sen. Mohammed Hassan with 15 votes, while at the other venue, where a similar election was also held, Adamu Waziri and his nephew Haruna Bawa Waziri trailed with 3 and 5 votes respectively from Sen. Mohammed Hassan who pulled 324.

Double registration: Senate probes allegation against Bello

The Senate on Wednesday resolved to investigate allegation of double registration leveled against Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.

The resolution to probe the allegation followed observation by Senator Mohammed Hassan (Yobe South) on the need to establish the truth or otherwise of the allegation.

Hassan told his colleagues that when it was reported that Bello did double registration, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed it at a press conference the electoral umpire held on the matter.

He said that it was also reported that the Kogi State Governor could not be prosecuted because of his immunity.

Hassan noted that it was further reported that Bello had been issued another voter’s card by the same INEC that confirmed double registration allegation against Bello.

He prayed the Senate to look into the matter with a view to establishing the true situation regarding Bello’s registration to vote or be voted for in any election in the country.

He noted that it was necessary that the issue of double registration against Bello be cleared so that Nigerians would be more educated on the circumstances surrounding the allegation.

Hassan said, “There is this situation going round regarding the Governor of Kogi State. It was reported recently in the newspapers that the Governor of Kogi State was involved in double registration in the voter registration exercise.

“Again, some days or weeks after, INEC held a press conference in which they confirmed it and sacked three members of staff of INEC.

“Now, we are concerned again. It was reported again by the newspapers that he had been issued another voter card from another ward. We are concerned about this and I think it is very important that the Senate Committee on INEC investigates and get to the root of this matter. It is very important.

“It was reported everywhere that he cannot be prosecuted because he has immunity but for the purpose of getting this picture very right, I think the Senate Committee on INEC should investigate this and get this matter right.

Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, described the allegation as important and directed the Senate Committee on INEC to look into the matter.

Saraki said, “The issue that you’re talking about is one that is important because the stability of our democracy depends on the credibility of our electoral processes.

“And as such, we must ensure that the processes are always what we can be proud of, especially now that countries all over are looking up to our electoral processes.

“I am happy that the Chairman of INEC is seated here. It is something that he could look into and come back to tell us where the issue is.”

  • Senate commiserates with British Parliament over terror attack

The Senate has commiserated with the British Parliament over Wednesday’s terror attack outside the parliament in Westminster which killed three people.

The Senate took the step following a point of order by the Leader of the Senate, Sen.  Ahmed Lawan, on Thursday’s plenary.

“The Senate notes with utter sadness the attack by terrorists on the House of Parliament in Westminster,” Lawan said.

He said the Senate believed “that the attackers carefully touched the legislature which is the mark of liberty and democracy”.

Lawan said the issue of terrorism was no longer a local issue of any country but that any terrorist attack on any country was an action on all  those who cherished freedom from oppression and the right to be free.

According to him, the Senate will not relent and must indeed continue to fight terrorism in whatever shape or form it takes, irrespective of where it is targeted.

“The Senate recognises the long standing and historic relationship between the Nigerian Parliament and Westminster.

“The Senate reiterates our earlier role as a parliament for broader cooperation against terrorism on a global scale and the need to build synergy and partnership in this regard,” it said.

Contributing, Sen. Mohammed Hassan (PDP-Yobe), who seconded the motion, said: “This building (the Senate) is vulnerable to such attack.

“The leadership of the Senate should take a very drastic measure to ensure that things like this are averted.”

Sen. George Sekibo (PDP-Rivers) said “it was frightening when we heard of terrorist attack on the legislature.”

“They want to discourage the legislature from saying the truth or functioning in their full capacity for the purpose in which the legislature is set up. We should not be afraid we should do our work as it is expected.”

The President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, described the attack as sad and horrifying.

“The message is that any attack on any parliament anywhere in the world is an attack on all parliaments.

“This Senate conveys our solidarity and support for our colleagues in the UK parliament and to the people in the United Kingdom in general.

“We continue to stand together in the fight against terrorism,” he said.
