    Soka: Main suspect on the run, say police

    Oyo State Police Commissioner Mohammed Indabawa has said the prime suspect behind the Soka kidnappers’ den in Ibadan is on the run.

    He said “three or four” suspects had been arraigned in connection with the incident.

    Briefing reporters on the case yesterday at the Police headquarters in Eleyele, Indabawa said the case would not be swept under the carpet.

    He urged the public to always inform the police about the activities of hoodlums in their areas.

    Indabawa said seven suspected robbers and car snatchers were arrested at various areas in the state.

    They include Benjamin John (25), Uchenna John (36), Semiu Sikiru (28), Daniel Okorie (27) and Uche Enukwe.

    One locally made pistol, five cartridges, one unregistered Bajaj motorcycle, a Toyota Camry marked LND 142 XBN and a phone were recovered from the suspects.

  • Slain policemen in Ibadan church robbery not on official duty

    THe two policemen killed in a church robbery at Ibadan, Oyo State, on Sunday, were not on official duty.

    According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Indabawa, made this known yesterday.

    The policemen were killed by robbers, who invaded the Vine Branch Church, on Queen Elizabeth Road.

    The policeman were said to have escorted a bank official to pick up the offering and tithes.

    Many worshippers were injured, but the robbers were unable to access the money.

    Indabawa, who described the incident as unfortunate, said: “We are investigating what or who took them there.”

    Also yesterday, three suspected members of the robbery gang that attacked a member of the House of Assembly, Mr. Waliu Adekunle, at his Oke Olola home in Oyo town on February 6, last year, were paraded at the Command Headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan.

    They are Ismail Olusegun (26), Amodu Garba (20) and Oluwaseyi Oyeniran.

    Indabawa said the suspects were arrested at Oroki in Oyo town. Other members of the gang are at large. Olusegun confessed to the crime.

    Also paraded was a suspected ‘’trailer hijacker”, Olatunbosun Ojotunde, who was arrested in possession of a cutlass stained with blood after he and his cohorts allegedly attacked a truck conveying Soya meal on February 6.

    Indabawa said: “After the driver of the hijacked truck, who was injured, alerted the police, the Skynet patrol team attached to Ijokodo axis intercepted the truck, but the hoodlums abandoned it and ran away. They were pursued and one of them, Olatunbosun Ojotunde, was arrested with a cutlass stained with blood. On February 16, SARS operatives recovered a Mazda car; RSD 31 AA, which the robbers used for the operation.

    “Upon investigation, an ex-employee of the company of the hijacked truck, Wasiu Folarin, was arrested for masterminding the attack and he confessed.”

    Ibitoye Modesola and Tolulope Ojebode were also paraded for allegedly raiding a house in Moniya.

    Indabawa said the two suspects confessed to robbery, adding that two AK47 rifles with 15 rounds of live ammunition were recovered from them.

  • Oyo Police parade couple, four others over human trafficking, prostitution

    THE Oyo State Police Command on Friday paraded a couple for allegedly trading in prostitution of under-aged girls in Ibadan. Four other women allegedly hired by the couple to facilitate the illicit trade were also paraded.

    The couple, Temitope Falusi, aged 45, and his wife, Helen, were arrested at their ‘Sharp Corner Hotel’, Orita Aperin in Ibadan North East local government area of the state.

    Parading the suspects at the Eleyele Police Headquarters, Ibadan, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Indabawa, gave their names and ages as Princess Igbinedion (20), Endurance Edabor (22), Jessica John (20), and Tina Nosa (23).

    Narrating how the suspects were arrested, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Olabisi Ilabanafor (DSP), stated that the police discovered that when one of the girls living with the couple was to be made to have sexual intercourse with a man in the place. A request she turned down, claiming she was not aware that she was engaged by the hotel operator for that purpose.

    Ilobanafor disclosed that the girl believed that she was employed as a bar attendant and not as commercial sex worker.

    The police spokeswoman added, “When our men swooped on the hotel, these four girls were found in the hotel, and so were arrested along with the couple. Once we are through with investigation, we shall hand them over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP) for prosecution,” she said.

    2013: police record 365 rape incidents in Oyo

    The Oyo State Police command yesterday said it recorded 365 cases of rape last year.

    It said it secured conviction of about 1,078 accused persons who were involved in various crimes.

    The Police Commissioner, Mohammed Indabawa, spoke with reporters in Ibadan.

    Indabawa said 60,997 ammunition and cartridges as well as 103 arms were recovered from criminals.

    The police boss added that the command foiled 32 armed robbery attacks and 18 kidnap attempts. He added that 1098 bags of substances suspected to be Indian Hemp, which amounted to N18 million, were recovered last November.

    Indabawa said Governor Abiola Ajimobi, as the State Chief Executive Officer, acknowledged effective policing in the state in the year.

    He assured residents of result-oriented policing.

    On the casualty recorded, the police boss said the command lost a negligible number of his men on one or two occasions.

    He attributed the success to modern policing approaches.

  • Two held with N11m Indian hemp in Oyo

    The Police in Oyo State have arrested two suspected Indian hemp dealers in Ibadan, the state capital.

    Police Commissioner Mohammed Indabawa said Mrs. Toyin Adegoke (30) and David Ndidi (27) were arrested around 9pm on November 29 at Eleja, along Akanran, with 646 bags of Indian hemp worth N11 million.

    Parading the suspects yesterday at the Command Headquartres in Eleyele, Indabawa said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at Ogbere received information that a consignment of weeds was about to be transported by a DAF truck, marked XR 967 JJJ, from a cannabis plantation at Eleja.

    He said some of the suspects escaped when the police stormed the farm, but two were arrested.

    Indabawa said the police were on the trail of the suspects at large.

    Speaking with reporters, Ndidi claimed to be a motor boy, adding that the owner of the consignment and the driver escaped.

    He said Mrs. Adegoke knew about the Indian hemp and was following the truck with her car when the police arrested them.

    Ndidi said: “The driver of the lorry and the owner asked me to alight at Olorunsogo and picked me up after the lorry was loaded. I did not know there was Indian hemp in the lorry.”

    Mrs. Adegoke said she was an orange seller and was in Eleja to buy oranges from her base in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, but was arrested “during the commotion”.

  • Guard held for ‘stealing’ N13m

    The police in Oyo State have arrested a security guard, Pius Edward (35), for allegedly stealing N13 million from the office of his employer, the Bishop of Agbaakin Layout, at Iwo Road in Ibadan, the state capital.

    Commissioner of Police Mohammed Indabawa told reporters yesterday that Edward hid in a hotel at Okada village with the assistance of an officer at the Ogun State Immigration Office.

    Indabawa said the immigration officer, who was fully aware of the source of the money, assisted Edward and his family to procure travelling documents to Dubai.

    He said Edward was arrested at Idi-Iroko, a border town in Ogun State, adding that N656,000 and $2,300 were recovered from him.

    Also recovered from him were a black Honda saloon car and a blue Mitsubishi Gallant saloon car.

    Indabawa said five persons were arrested at an Indian Hemp farm in Akanran with 458 bags of Indian Hemp.

    The suspects are Stephen Osanwe, Peter Frank, John Ugoh, Macauley Akanno and George Elvis.

    Indabawa said some of the Indian Hemp was loaded in three buses and one Volvo car when the police stormed the farm located at Eleja in Akanran, Ona Ara Local Government Area.

     

  • Police recover IEDs in Ibadan

    The Oyo State Police Command has recovered some improvised explosive devices and other allied materials along Podo-Ijebu-Ode axis of Ibadan.

    Addressing journalists at the police headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, on Thursday, the state police Commissioner, Mohammed Indabawa, explained that on August 11 at about 3:15am, a police team on routine patrol along Podo-Ijebu-Ode axis intercepted a taxi with three occupants whom they flagged down but refused to stop and sped off.

    He went on:”After a hot chase the occupants of a Nissan Sunny car painted in Ogun State commercial colour escaped into a nearby bush while the vehicle was abandoned.

    “During the search, six cartons of explosives powder, two cartons of solar detonating cords and 16 bundles of ten wires each of delay detonator wires were recovered.”
