  • Motorcyclist bags 6 months imprisonment for inflicting injuries on Man

    A Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Monday sentenced a 25-year-old motorcyclist, Nura Mohammed, to six months  imprisonment for inflicting injuries on a man’s throat with a knife.

    Mohammed, who admitted committing the offence, begged the court for leniency.

    The judge, Mohammed Marafa, however, convicted the accused, but gave him N 20,000 option of fine.

    Marafa also ordered Mohammed to pay N50, 000 compensation to the nominal complainant, one Samail Bello, failure of which, he will serve additional three months in prison.

    The judge warned him to desist from committing crime.

    He said Mohammed’s act portrayed him as a heartless person.

    The convict was arraigned on a count charge of causing grievous hurt.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, had told the court that Bello of Gbazango, Kubwa, Abuja reported the matter at the Kubwa Police Station on May 21.

    Olanipekun said on May 20, the convict acted in a violent manner and used a sharp knife to “slice Bello’s throat’’ which as a result he sustained a deep cut.

    He said that the victim was taken to Kubwa General Hospital where he was admitted.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 247 of the Penal Code.‎

  • Student docked over alleged theft of gas cylinder

    The police on Friday arraigned a 20-year-old student, Andrew Dominic, before a Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court over alleged theft of gas cylinder.

    The prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, told the court that one Mr Azubike Chidebere ‎reported the case at the Kubwa Police Station on April 23.

    Olanipekun said that the accused  trespassed into the complainant’s compound and stole his gas cylinder worth N12, 000.

    He said that Dominic was caught while attempting to escape with the cylinder.

    The prosecutor submitted  that Dominic had been convicted for a similar offence in the past.

    He noted that the offences contravened Sections 342 and 287 of the Penal Code.

    The Judge, Mohammed Marafa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    Marafa held that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

    He  adjourned the case until June 18 for hearing.

  • Man bags five months imprisonment for breach of trust

    A Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Friday sentenced 30-year-old Buhari Adam to five months imprisonment for criminal breach of trust.

    The judge, Mohammed Marafa, however, gave Adam N30,000 option of fine and warned him to desist from committing crime.

    Marafa also ordered Adam to pay N420, 000 compensation to the complainant, Fatima Sule, failure of which would attract additional three months in jail.

    Adam, who hails from Niger, was convicted over charges bordering on criminal breach of trust and negligent conduct.

    The prosecutor, John Okpa, had told the court that the complainant reported the matter at Dutse-Alhaji Police Station on April 11.

    He said that the complainant entrusted her Bajaj motorcycle, valued at N420, 000 to Adam on a hire purchase basis on July 21, 2017.

    Okpa said that Adam, however, gave the motorcycle to another person, who claimed that the motorcycle was stolen.

    The prosecutor said that Adam gave the motorcycle out without the complainant’s consent, ‎adding that the offence contravened Section 312 of the Penal Code.

    Adam, who pleaded guilty, begged the court for leniency.

  • Man bags four months jail term for stealing 2 electric generators

    A Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court on Tuesday, sentenced a 21-year-old man, Matthew Daniel to four months imprisonment for stealing two generators.

    The judge, Mohammed Marafa, however, gave Daniel an option of N10, 000 fine  noting that though Daniel looked remorseful, he must be punished to deter others.

    Marafa advised the complainant, Olajumoke Aluko to go by civil action for compensation of one of the generators that was not recovered.‎

    He also warned Daniel to desist from committing crime adding that there was no excuse to steal.

    The prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun had told the court that Aluko reported the matter ‎at the Kubwa Police Station on March 30.

    Daniel of Kubwa, Abuja was convicted and sentenced over charges of criminal trespass and theft.

    The convict told the court that he entered Aluko’s shop, to ease himself and the devil tempted him to steal the said generators

    He added that he committed the crime to pay for his medication at the hospital and begged the court for leniency.

    The prosecutor said Daniel criminally trespassed into the complainant’s premises and stole two generators valued N140, 000.

    He said that one generator was recovered from Daniel in the course of police investigations.

    Olanipekun said that the offences contravened Sections 342 and 287 of the Penal Code.

    Man gets five strokes of cane for giving false information to police

    A Kubwa Grade I Area Court, Abuja on Friday ordered that one, Mohammed Nura be given five strokes of the cane, for giving false information to the police.

    The judge, Mohammed Marafa, gave the order after the convict pleaded guilty and begged the court to show him mercy.

    Marafa warned that the court would not be lenient with Nura the next time he was brought before it.

    The prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun had told the court that Nura deceived the police at Kubwa Police Station on Feb. 26.

    He said Nura falsely accused one Musa Frank of NEPA Local, Kubwa, Abuja of stealing a Bajaj motorcycle an offence that contravened Section 140 of the Penal Code.

    Nura had admitted guilt, saying it was a mistake.

    Court sentences student four months in prison for cheating

    A Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Friday sentenced a 27-year-old student, Aonover Iorwuese, to four months imprisonment  for cheating.

    Iorwuese of Gboko, Benue, was convicted and sentenced after pleading guilty to a two-count charge of cheating and theft.‎

    He begged for leniency, saying that he made a mistake and would not repeat it.‎

    The judge, Mohammed Marafa, however, gave him an option of N40, 000 fine, and warned him to desist from committing crime and be of good behaviour.

    The prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, had told the court that one Mary Abraham of NEPA Road, Kubwa, Abuja, reported the matter at Kubwa Police Station on Jan. 13.

    “The complainant went to Ignobis Hotel, Kubwa, to withdraw money from  ATM point and met Iorwuese on the said date.

    “Iorwuese offered to help the complainant withdraw money from the ATM, but stole the card, and told the woman that her ATM card was trapped in the machine.

    “When Iorwuese later attempted to withdraw money from the complainant’s account without her knowledge, he got arrested and had 30 pieces of ATM cards in his possession,’’ Olanikpekun said.

    The prosecutor said the ATM cards belonged to 30 different people from different banks.

    He said the ATM cards were recovered from Iorwuese by the police, adding that the offences contravened Sections 79, 322 and 287 of the Penal Code.

    Man gets five strokes of cane for attempt to steal tyre cover

    A Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Friday ordered that five strokes of the cane be given to a 25-year-old man, Mustapha Abubakar,  for attempting to steal a jeep tyre cover.‎

    Abubakar of no fixed address had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal trespass and attempt to commit an offence.

    The judge, Mr Mohammed Marafa, also warned Abubakar to desist from committing crime, adding that if brought back to court again, he would face the consequences.

    The prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, had told the court that Abubakar criminally trespassed into a compound along pipeline, Kubwa, Abuja on November 18.

    He said that Abubakar was arrested while attempting to steal a jeep tyre cover, adding that the offence contravened Sections 346 and 95 of the Penal Code.

    Carpenter jailed three months for stealing POS

    A Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja on Friday sentenced a 22-year-old carpenter, Matthew Stephen, to three months in prison for stealing a Point Of Sale ( POS ) machine  after he pleaded guilty to a charge of theft.

    The judge, Mohammed Marafa, also gave Stephen an option of N10,000 fine and warned him to desist from committing crime.

    He also ordered Stephen to pay  N43,000 to the complainant‎ as compensation.
    The prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, had earlier told the court that the matter was reported by Fitzpatrick Nwachukwu of Odot Close, Kubwa, Abuja at Kubwa Police Station on December 31, 2017.

    He said Stephen trespassed into the complainant’s garden on December 31, 2017 and stole the POS and the sum of N43,000 cash‎.
    He added that the POS machine ‎was recovered from Stephen, an offence which contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.
    Stephen had begged the court for leniency.

    Pastor docked for criminal intimidation

    Emeka Okpocha, a 49-year-old pastor  has been arraigned by the police on Friday in a Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja over criminal intimidation.
     
    The defendant of Kuje, Abuja, is facing one-count charge of criminal intimidation.
     
    The prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, told the court that the matter was reported by Chidimma Okpocha of Arab Road, Kubwa, Abuja, at Kubwa Police Station on December 5.
     
    He said the defendant sent an email to the complainant narrating a story of a man who gunned down his ex-wife and mother-in-law.
     
    Olanipekun said the defendant also told the complainant that whenever he thought of her, something bad would come to his mind.‎
     
    He added that the defendant also threatened the complainant’s life at her place of work ‎and home, which instilled fear in her.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 397 of the Penal Code.‎
    However, the pastor pleaded not guilty to the charge against him and The Judge, Mohammed Marafa, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with one reliable surety in like sum.
    Marafa said the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must provide means of identification and livelihood as he adjourned the case until February 28 for further hearing.

    Court docks dispatch riders for stealing N643,388

    Two men, Ebodo Daniel and Oga Joseph, were on Wednesday arraigned in Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court for allegedly swindling their employer of N643, 388.‎

    The defendants were docked on charges of joint act, criminal breach of trust, misappropriation and cheating.

    The prosecutor, Mr John Okpa, told the court that one Adisa Adeola of Lokogoma, Abuja, reported the matter at the Kubwa Police Station on Nov. 25, 2017.

    He said the complainant employed the defendants as dispatch riders with Konga.com to deliver parcels to customers and remit money to the company’s account.

    Okpa, however, said that Daniel dishonestly diverted the sum of N469, 708, to his personal use, while Joseph did the same with N173, 680.

    He said told the court that the offences contravened the provision of Sections 79, 311, 308 and 322 of the Penal Code.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    ‎The defence counsel, Mr Anenin Enabosi, made a bail application for the defendants, assuring the court that reliable sureties would be provided if the bail was granted.‎

    ‎‎The judge, Mr Mohammed Marafa, granted Daniel bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties, who he ordered, must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

    Joseph got bail in the sum of N200, 000 with one surety in like sum, and the judge explained that Joseph’s bail condition was less because Daniel allegedly diverted more money.

    ‎He added that the sureties must produce means of livelihood and identification and adjourned the case until Jan. 18.
