  • ‘Kidnapping made us swim in cash’

    The police in Niger State have arrested four suspected kidnappers terrorising Fota village in Lapai Local Government.

    The suspected kidnappers, Mohammed Abubakar, Mamuda Mohammed, Mohammed Mohammed and Amadu Garba, confessed that the ransom they got from their victims made them to live big.

    The suspects met their Waterloo after one of their kidnapped victims, Sani Dakuma, escaped from their den.

    It was learnt that the suspects had kidnapped the father of Sani and collected N1.5 million as ransom before his release.

    Speaking to reporters when paraded in Minna by the police, one of the suspects, Mamuda Mohammed, said they made a lot of money from kidnapping, adding that they used the ransom to marry many wives and live big.

    “We have been making a lot of money from our victims. Whenever we kidnapped them, the ransom paid was quite rewarding to the extent that we could compare ourselves with directors in the ministries.

    “We swim in cash, marry many wives and lavish money on our girlfriends. Honestly, we never knew that our cups would become full until we found ourselves in the police net,” he said.

    Police spokesman Muhammad Abubakar said the suspects were trailed and apprehended following a tip-off by officers attached to Lapai Divisional Office.

    He said the suspects have admitted to committing the offence, adding that the matter has been charged to court.

    The kidnappers, Mohammed Abubakar, Mamuda Mohammed, Mohammed Mohammed, and Amadu Garba confessed that the ransom they get from their victims make them live lavishing lives.

    The group met their waterloo one of their kidnapped victims, Sani Dakuma escaped from their den.

    It was learnt that the suspects had earlier kidnapped the father of Sani and collected the sum of N1.5 million as ransom before his release.

    Speaking to newsmen when paraded in Minna, One of the suspects, Mamuda Mohammed said that kidnapping was their sole fast growing business in the area and they use the ransom money to marry more wives and lavish money on their girlfriends.

    The Police Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Abubakar said the suspects were trailed and apprehended based on tip-off by officers attached to Lapai Divisional Office.

    He said the suspects had admitted to committing the offence and the matter has been charged to Court.

  • Yahaya takes over as 1 Div GOC

    Major General Faruk Yahaya has taken over command as General Officer Commanding (GOC), of 1 Division, Nigerian Army, Kaduna.

    He took over from Major Gen. Mohammed Mohammed who served as GOC from October 26, 2017, until his transfer to head the Signals Corps.

    Yahaya who was the Army Secretary, at the Army Headquarters, Abuja, told officers and men of the division to be professional and responsive in the discharge of their constitutional roles, adding “I expect nothing less, but more.”

    He urged them to support him in consolidating the achievements recorded under the outgoing GOC, assuring that he would be decisive and professional handling situations.

    Yahaya stressed that their operations must be guided by rules of engagement.

    “I urge you all to remain steadfast. We should be apolitical and be committed to our areas of responsibility.

    “You must conduct yourselves well and be professional in the discharge of your duties,” the GOC added.

    The outgoing GOC had expressed appreciation to all for their tremendous support during his 15- month stint as GOC and urged them to redouble their support and cooperation to the new GOC.

    Mohammed said it was important to work as a team in order to ensure stability in the command’s area of operation.

    He charged the officers and men to remain apolitical and “support the civil authority in discharging their constitutional responsibilities.

  • 2019: we’re set to provide conducive security atmosphere – Army

    Twelve days to the Presidential election, the Nigerian Army has said that, it is ready to provide a conducive security atmosphere for the conduct of the 2019 general elections.

    It however said that it has warned its officers and men to remain apolitical throughout the elections period.

    The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division Nigerian Army, Major-General Mohammed Mohammed disclosed this at the weekend while serving as the Guest of Honour in Kontagora during the Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery (NACA), Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC) and 311 Artillery Regiment combined West African Social Activities (WASA).

    General Muhammad said, “Bearing in  mind  that we have less than 14 days to the presidential election our mandate ad the Nigerian Army is to ensure peaceful conduct of the elections wherever our troops are.

    “We are going to be providing support role to the civil security agencies, to ensure that they discharge their responsibility in an environment that is conducive for every Nigerian to come out and perform his or her civic responsibility.” He said.

    He however reminded the troops of the Chief of Army Staff’s directive that all Nigerian Army personnel must remain apolitical during the polls, warning any personnel found wanting will be appropriately sanctioned.

    Speaking on WASA, the GOC said, “All works and no play makes Jack a dull boy, goes the popular saying. However, it is not only Jack that can become dull by working without playing, even our personnel will become dull if only subjected to ‘work work work’ without necessary recreation to relax their minds and bodies. This is the whole essence of this gathering.

    “It is pleasing that despite the huge involvement of the two formations and unit spanning from training to operations, to enhancing peace and security in Kontagora and its environs in particular and Nigeria in general, the year 2018 edition of WASA could still be held.” He said.

    General Mohammed while commending the officers and soldiers’ wives for keeping the home front while their husbands fight in defence of Nigeria, also prayed for the officers and soldiers who died in the battle against insurgents.

    Similarly, the Commander NACA, Major-General Abubakar Tarfa who traced the history of WASA to colonial era said, during the Second World War, the forebearers of the soldiers under the West African Frontier Forces (WAFF) distinguished themselves in many battles owing to their diverse cultural inclinations. “the colonial authorities thereafter introduced WASA and made it an annual event to permit the African soldiers to observe any local cultural rituals.”

    General Tarfa said, enormous security challenges confronting the nation not withstanding, 2018 was quite busy and eventful for the Nigerian Army, as it strived to live up to expectations.

    He however assured that, the Nigerian Army will remain consistent in its collaboration with other security agencies to ensure security of lives and property and peaceful co-existence of all in the country and particularly their host communities.

    Highlights of the occasion was presentation of awards to outstanding personnel who distinguished themselves during the 2018 training and operational year.

    The awardees include female Engineer Beauty Elisha of 311 Artillery Regiment, Lance Bombadier Musa Abdullahi of the Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery and Sgt. Tikikus Baffayo of Nigerian Army Training Centre.

     

     

  • Man in court over alleged attempt to kill father

    A 33-year-old applicant, Mohammed Mohammed, was on Friday remanded in prison by a Minna Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly attempting to kill his father.

    The accused is facing a count charge of attempted culpable homicide, contrary to Section 229 of the Penal Code.

    Magistrate Amina Musa, declined to take his plea on the ground that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case.

    Musa directed the police to forward the case file to the State Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

    She adjourned the case until May 10 for further mention.

    Police prosecutor Muazu Abdullahi, had told the court that Mohammed of Kpaki village, Mokwa Local Government Area, attacked his father Mohammed Chado, with a cutlass while on his way to farm on April 15.

    He said that the accused attempted to kill his father by cutting off his left hand and inflicted injuries on him.

    Suleja Flood Update: Council chairman says 10 missing, two bodies recovered

    The Chairman of Suleja Local Government of Niger, Malam Abdullahi Maje, has confirmed 10 persons missing and two bodies recovered in flood in the area on Sunday.

    Maje also said that 100 houses were affected in the incident, adding that eight houses were washed away in the flood, which followed 10 hours of heavy  rainfall.

    Witnesses had said that eight members of a family were suspected to have died in the flood which affected Suleja and Tafa local Government areas of Niger.

    The head of the household was said to have survived but his  two wives and six children were not lucky.

    The New Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that many families were affected with household effects floating in the water.

    Many people struggled to bale water out of their houses.

    Mr Mohammed Mohammed, the District Police Officer in-charge of Division ‘A’ Police station in Suleja, could not confirm the casualty figure but said his men had visited the flood scenes.

    “The flood affected many people who built their houses along the river bank; many houses have been destroyed with unconfirmed number of deaths recorded.

    “Police are providing security around the scene so that hoodlums will not cart away victims’ property especially those lying outside,” he said.

    He promised to furnish more details on the incident.

    The National Emergency Management Agency was not also able to give  details.

    Meanwhile, Malam Abdulkareem Samanja, the Village Head of Hayin Nasarawa-Iku in the nearby Tafa Local Government Area decried the loss of property.

    He said he was still awaiting report from ward heads on the incident.

    Vice Principal accused of impregnating student gets N1m bail

    Mohammed Mohammed, a school Vice Principal accused of impregnating his 16-year-old student, was on Tuesday granted N1 million bail by a Minna Magistrate’s Court.

    Magistrate Fatima Auna, who ruled on Mohammed’s bail application, said that the bail was in line with sections 35 and 36 of the 1999 constitution, and sections 341 and 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

    Mohammed, Vice Principal of Government Secondary School, Tunga in Niger, was first arraigned on April 4, but pleaded not guilty to the charge and applied for bail.

    The accused, who had been in prison custody since the arraignment, also challenged the court’s jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

    In her ruling, Auna granted the bail application and also ordered the accused to produce one surety, who must be a civil servant on grade level 12 or above.

    She also ruled that the offence was well within the jurisdiction of her court to entertain.

    Mohammed is standing trial on a two-count charge of unlawful sexual intercourse with a child, and impregnating a female student.

    The Police Prosecutor, Mr Hussaini Paiko, had told the court that one Sokombo Danjuma reported the matter at the Child Rights Agency which, in turn, transferred it to the police.

    He said that the offences contravened sections 18 (2) and 25 (3) of the Child Rights Law of Niger State.
